Deep Learning Of 2-D Images Representing N-D Data In General Line Coordinates, Dmytro Dovhalets, Boris Kovalerchuk, Szilárd Vajda, Răzvan Andonie Jan 2018

Deep Learning Of 2-D Images Representing N-D Data In General Line Coordinates, Dmytro Dovhalets, Boris Kovalerchuk, Szilárd Vajda, Răzvan Andonie

Computer Science Faculty Scholarship

While knowledge discovery and n-D data visualization procedures are often efficient, the loss of information, occlusion, and clutter continue to be a challenge. General Line Coordinates (GLC) is a rather new technique to deal with such artifacts. GLC-Linear, which is one of the methods in GLC, allows transforming n-D numerical data to their visual representation as polylines losslessly. The method proposed in this paper uses these 2-D visual representations as input to Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) classifiers. The obtained classification accuracies are close to the ones obtained by other machine learning algorithms. The main benefit of the method is the …

Looking At Faces In The Wild, Eugene Borovikov, Szilárd Vajda, Michael Bonifant, Michael Gill Jan 2018

Looking At Faces In The Wild, Eugene Borovikov, Szilárd Vajda, Michael Bonifant, Michael Gill

Computer Science Faculty Scholarship

Recent advances in the face detection (FD) and recognition (FR) technology may give an impression that the problem of face matching is essentially solved, e.g. via deep learning models using thousands of samples per face for training and validation on the available benchmark data-sets. Human vision system seems to handle face localization and matching problem differently from the modern FR systems, since humans detect faces instantly even in most cluttered environments, and often require a single view of a face to reliably distinguish it from all others. This prompted us to take a biologically inspired look at building a cognitive …

How Do Topological Properties Of Ripple-Carry Adders Affect Time Delay?, Alexander Boukal Jan 2018

How Do Topological Properties Of Ripple-Carry Adders Affect Time Delay?, Alexander Boukal

All Zyzzogeton Presentations

This poster presents topological properties of N-bit ripple-carry adders and the effects of their topology, specifically their genus, on the speed of current flow. An adder is a very simple computer that takes input numbers (0 and 1) from logic gates and then adds them together. To create a ripple-carry adder, we take N number of adder circuits and arrange them in parallel. We differentiate between two kinds of adder circuits: half adders and full adders. Half adders are non-planar (has loops) circuits with genus = 1 that let us perform elementary addition operations using logic gates. Full adder circuits …

How Much Should We Spend To Protect Privacy?: Data Breaches And The Need For Information We Do Not Have, Richard Warner, Robert Sloan Jan 2018

How Much Should We Spend To Protect Privacy?: Data Breaches And The Need For Information We Do Not Have, Richard Warner, Robert Sloan

All Faculty Scholarship

A cost/benefit approach to privacy confronts two tradeoff issues. One is making appropriate tradeoffs between privacy and many goals served by the collection, distribution, and use of information. The other is making tradeoffs between investments in preventing unauthorized access to information and the variety of other goals that also make money, time, and effort demands. Much has been written about the first tradeoff. We focus on the second. The issue is critical. Data breaches occur at the rate of over three a day, and the aggregate social cost is extremely high. The puzzle is that security experts have long explained …

Applicability Of Current Hra Quantification Techniques To Human Failures Related To Digital Control Systems, Harold S. Blackman Jan 2018

Applicability Of Current Hra Quantification Techniques To Human Failures Related To Digital Control Systems, Harold S. Blackman

Division of Research and Economic Development Publications and Presentations

This paper examines current error quantification techniques to determine their applicability to failures related to digital control systems. Methods are examined for relevant categories of analysis using design principles from digital control and display guidance. In addition, inherent differences at the system and task are examined for instances that might contribute to performance shaping factors not addressed or defined in current methods. The premise being that if digital systems are designed to meet design standards such as readability, information density, illumination, organization-location, etc. then, perhaps current methods may be applicable. Identification of and presentation of fundamental differences are presented along …

Chrono: A System For Normalizing Temporal Expressions, Amy L. Olex, Luke G. Maffey, Nicholas Morton, Bridget T. Mcinnes Jan 2018

Chrono: A System For Normalizing Temporal Expressions, Amy L. Olex, Luke G. Maffey, Nicholas Morton, Bridget T. Mcinnes

Computer Science Publications

The Chrono System: Chrono is a hybrid rule-based and machine learning system written in Python and built from the ground up to identify temporal expressions in text and normalizes them into the SCATE schema. Input text is preprocessed using Python’s NLTK package, and is run through each of the four primary modules highlighted here. Note that Chrono does not remove stopwords because they add temporal information and context, and Chrono does not tokenize sentences. Output is an Anafora XML file with annotated SCATE entities. After minor parsing logic adjustments, Chrono has emerged as the top performing system for SemEval 2018 …
