Thumb Sticks And Hand Grenades : An Analysis Of War And Perspectives In Video Games, Jonathan Ked Nance
Thumb Sticks And Hand Grenades : An Analysis Of War And Perspectives In Video Games, Jonathan Ked Nance
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Throughout Thumb Sticks and Hand Grenades, I seek to examine the role American Exceptionalism plays within the player’s perspective of war narratives in Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Wolfenstein: The New Order, and Wolfenstein: The New Colossus. Using a theoretical lens I call ludo-narrative war theory, I am able to fully understand the above-listed games’ narrative, player perspectives, and positions in relationship to the wider war narrative and how the games reflect a wider understanding of war, American Exceptionalism, and societal issues prevalent in the analog world. When these facets of the games are analyzed I am able to show …

In fish, protein-coding and noncoding genes involved in muscle atrophy are not fully characterized. In this study, we characterized coding and noncoding genes involved in gonadogenesis-associated muscle atrophy, and investigated the potential functional interplay between these genes. Using RNA- Seq, we compared expression pattern of mRNAs, long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) and microRNAs of atrophying skeletal muscle from gravid females and control skeletal muscle from age-matched sterile individuals. A total of 852 mRNAs, 1,160 lncRNAs and 28 microRNAs were differentially expressed (DE) between the two groups. Muscle atrophy appears to be mediated by many genes encoding ubiquitin- proteasome system, autophagy related …

Recent research in retail facility layout has focused on developing analytical models to estimate visibility measures of novel rack layouts based on assumptions about a shopper’s field of view. However, because of the human element involved in the shopping experience, it is vital to compare these models relative to actual human performance. In this study, we evaluate the predictions of our previously developed analytical model (that estimates exposure of every location on a given rack layout assuming expected head movement) in a 3D Virtual Environment (VE). We conducted trials with 18 participants who were asked to find targets strategically placed …

Unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs, have the potential to vastly improve plume cloud tracking at low cost. Plume clouds can be produced from blast mining, chemical warfare, unintended man-made disasters, and natural causes. This thesis provides implementation of the capability to simulate a 3D environment in which UAVs are individually controlled and each report a plume's concentration value at a specific location. It leverages existing industry standard technologies, including the PX4 autopilot system, the Gazebo simulation environment, the Robot Operating System (ROS), and QGroundControl. The provided system integrates the existing tools with a plume model plug-in that provides simulated plume …

Detection of coding/functional SNPs that change the biological function of a gene may lead to identification of putative causative alleles within QTL regions and discovery of genetic markers with large effects on phenotypes. This study has two-fold objectives, first to develop, and validate a 50K transcribed gene SNP-chip using RNA-Seq data. To achieve this objective, two bioinformatics pipelines, GATK and SAMtools, were used to identify ∼21K transcribed SNPs with allelic imbalances associated with important aquaculture production traits including body weight, muscle yield, muscle fat content, shear force, and whiteness in addition to resistance/susceptibility to bacterial cold-water disease (BCWD). SNPs ere …

Muscle yield and quality traits are important for the aquaculture industry and consumers. Genetic selection for these traits is difficult because they are polygenic and result from multifactorial interactions. To study the genetic architecture of these traits, phenotypic characterization of whole body weight (WBW), muscle yield, fat content, shear force and whiteness were measured in ~500 fish representing 98 families from a growth-selected line. RNA-Seq was used to sequence the muscle transcriptome of different families exhibiting divergent phenotypes for each trait. We have identified 240 and 1,280 differentially expressed (DE) protein-coding genes and long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), respectively, in fish …

Transportation modeling and simulation play an important role in the planning and management of emergency evacuation. It is often indispensable for the preparedness and timely response to extreme events occurring in highly populated areas. Reliable and robust agent-based evacuation models are of great importance to support evacuation decision making. Nevertheless, these models rely on numerous hypothetical causal relationships between the evacuation behavior and a variety of factors including socio-economic characteristics and storm intensity. Understanding the impacts of these factors on evacuation behaviors (e.g., destination and route choices) is crucial in preparing optimal evacuation plans. This paper aims to contribute to …

Visual Analytics Of Cascaded Bottlenecksin Planar Flow Networks, Tobias Post, Thomas Wischgoll, Bernd Hamann, Hans Hagen
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
Finding bottlenecks and eliminating them to in-crease the overall flow of a network often appears in real world applications, such as production planning, factory layout, flowrelated physical approaches, and even cyber security. In many cases, several edges can form a bottleneck (cascaded bottlenecks). This work presents a visual analytics methodology to analyze these cascaded bottlenecks. The methodology consists of multiple steps: identification of bottlenecks, identification of potential improvements, communication of bottlenecks, interactive adaption of bottlenecks, and a feedback loop that allows users to adapt flow networks and their resulting bottlenecks until they are satisfied with the flow network configuration. Can Mass Be Negative?, Vladik Kreinovich, Sergei Soloviev
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Overcoming the force of gravity is an important part of space travel and a significant obstacle preventing many seemingly reasonable space travel schemes to become practical. Science fiction writers like to imagine materials that may help to make space travel easier. Negative mass -- supposedly causing anti-gravity -- is one of the popular ideas in this regard. But can mass be negative? In this paper, we show that negative masses are not possible -- their existence would enable us to create energy out of nothing, which contradicts to the energy conservation law.

How To Efficiently Compute Ranges Over A Difference Between Boxes, With Applications To Underwater Localization, Luc Jaulin, Martine Ceberio, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
When using underwater autonomous vehicles, it is important to localize them. Underwater localization is very approximate. As a result, instead of a single location x, we get a set X of possible locations of a vehicle. Based on this set of possible locations, we need to find the range of possible values of the corresponding objective function f(x). For missions on the ocean floor, it is beneficial to take into account that the vehicle is in the water, i.e., that the location of this vehicle is not in a set X' describing the under-floor matter. Thus, the actual set of …

How To Detect Crisp Sets Based On Subsethood Ordering Of Normalized Fuzzy Sets? How To Detect Type-1 Sets Based On Subsethood Ordering Of Normalized Interval-Valued Fuzzy Sets?, Christian Servin, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
If all we know about normalized fuzzy sets is which set is a subset of which, will we be able to detect crisp sets? It is known that we can do it if we allow all possible fuzzy sets, including non-normalized ones. In this paper, we show that a similar detection is possible if we only allow normalized fuzzy sets. We also show that we can detect type-1 fuzzy sets based on the subsethood ordering of normalized interval-valued fuzzy sets.
