Food Photo Recognition For Dietary Tracking: System And Experiment, Zhao-Yan Ming, Jingjing Chen, Yu Cao, Ciarán Forde, Chong-Wah Ngo, Tat Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Tracking dietary intake is an important task for health management especially for chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Given the popularity of personal hand-held devices, mobile applications provide a promising low-cost solution to tackle the key risk factor by diet monitoring. In this work, we propose a photo based dietary tracking system that employs deep-based image recognition algorithms to recognize food and analyze nutrition. The system is beneficial for patients to manage their dietary and nutrition intake, and for the medical institutions to intervene and treat the chronic diseases. To the best of our knowledge, there are …

Sosiel: A Cognitive, Multi-Agent, And Knowledge-Based Platform For Modeling Boundedly-Rational Decision-Making, Garry Sotnik

Dissertations and Theses

Decision-related activities, such as bottom-up and top-down policy development, analysis, and planning, stand to benefit from the development and application of computer-based models that are capable of representing spatiotemporal social human behavior in local contexts. This is especially the case with our efforts to understand and search for ways to mitigate the context-specific effects of climate change, in which case such models need to include interacting social and ecological components. The development and application of such models has been significantly hindered by the challenges in designing artificial agents whose behavior is grounded in both empirical evidence and theory and in …

Semantic Document Clustering Using Information From Wordnet And Dbpedia, Lubomir Stanchev Jan 2018

Semantic Document Clustering Using Information From Wordnet And Dbpedia, Lubomir Stanchev

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Semantic document clustering is a type of unsupervised learning in which documents are grouped together based on their meaning. Unlike traditional approaches that cluster documents based on common keywords, this technique can group documents that share no words in common as long as they are on the same subject. We compute the similarity between two documents as a function of the semantic similarity between the words and phrases in the documents. We model information from WordNet and DBPedia as a probabilistic graph that can be used to compute the similarity between two terms. We experimentally validate our algorithm on the …

Measuring Decentralization Of Chinese Censorship In Three Industry Segments, Jeffrey Knockel Jan 2018

Measuring Decentralization Of Chinese Censorship In Three Industry Segments, Jeffrey Knockel

Computer Science ETDs

What is forbidden to talk about using Chinese apps? Companies operating in China face a complex array of regulations and are liable for content voiced using their platforms. Previous work studying Chinese censorship uses (1) sample testing or (2) measures content deletion; however, these techniques produce an incomplete picture biased toward (1) the tested samples or (2) whichever topics were trending.

In this dissertation, I use reverse engineering to study the code that applications use to determine whether to censor content. In doing so, I can provide a more complete and unbiased view of Chinese Internet censorship. I reverse engineer …

Predicting The Next Us President By Simulating The Electoral College, Boyan Kostadinov Jan 2018

Predicting The Next Us President By Simulating The Electoral College, Boyan Kostadinov

Publications and Research

We develop a simulation model for predicting the outcome of the US Presidential election based on simulating the distribution of the Electoral College. The simulation model has two parts: (a) estimating the probabilities for a given candidate to win each state and DC, based on state polls, and (b) estimating the probability that a given candidate will win at least 270 electoral votes, and thus win the White House. All simulations are coded using the high-level, open-source programming language R. One of the goals of this paper is to promote computational thinking in any STEM field by illustrating how probabilistic …

Cybersecurity In The Classroom: Bridging The Gap Between Computer Access And Online Safety, Andrew Malecki

Cyber Security Capstone Research Project Reports

According to ISACA, there will be a global shortage of 2 million cybersecurity professionals worldwide by 2019. Additionally, according to Experian Data Breach Resolution, as much as 80% of all network breaches can be traced to employee negligence. These problems will not solve themselves, and they likewise won’t improve without drastic action. An effort needs to be made to help direct interested and qualified individuals to the field of cybersecurity to move toward closing this gap. Moreover, steps need to be made to better inform the public of general safety measures while online, including the safeguarding of sensitive information.

A Dynamic Hierarchical Network Topology To Reduce Interference In User-Rich Lans, Ian Johnson, Erik Gabrielsen, Danh Nguyen, Gavin Pham, Alex Saladna, Travis Siems Jan 2018

A Dynamic Hierarchical Network Topology To Reduce Interference In User-Rich Lans, Ian Johnson, Erik Gabrielsen, Danh Nguyen, Gavin Pham, Alex Saladna, Travis Siems

SMU Journal of Undergraduate Research

In this paper we present a greedy approach to create hi- erarchical network topologies for throughput optimization in single access point to create hierarchical network topolo- gies. By minimizing electromagnetic interference, we opti- mize throughput by creating topologies where the probabil- ity of a collision occurring is low. We evaluate a series of greedy topology algorithms based on the average through- put of the resulting network. We conclude that hierarchical network topologies generated with greedy algorithms signif- icantly outperform networks with simple star topologies by up to 75%.

Re-Engineering Of Smart City's Business Processes Based On Social Networks And Internet Of Things, Emir Ugljanin, Dragan Stojanović, Ejub Kajan, Zakaria Maamar

All Works

This paper reports our experience with developing a Business-2-Social (B2S) platform that provides necessary support to all this platform's constituents, namely business processes, social media (e.g., social network), and Internet of Things (IoT). This platform is exemplified with smart cities whose successful management requires a complete integration of IoT and social media capabilities into the business processes implementing user services. To ensure a successful integration, social actions, that a smart city would allow citizens execute, are analyzed in terms of impact of these smart city's business processes. Reactions to these actions are tracked and then analyzed to improve user services.

Growth Performance, Organ-Level Ionic Relations And Organic Osmoregulation Of Elaeagnus Angustifolia In Response To Salt Stress, Zhengxiang Liu, Jiangfeng Zhu, Xiuyan Yang, Haiwen Wu, Qi Wei, Hairong Wei, Huaxin Zhang

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Elaeagnus angustifolia is one of the most extensively afforested tree species in environment-harsh regions of northern China. Despite its exceptional tolerance to saline soil, the intrinsic adaptive physiology has not been revealed. In this study, we investigated the growth, organ-level ionic relations and organic osmoregulation of the seedlings hydroponically treated with 0, 100 and 200 mM NaCl for 30 days. We found that the growth characteristics and the whole-plant dry weight were not obviously stunted, but instead, were even slightly stimulated by the treatment of 100 mM NaCl. In contrast, these traits were significantly inhibited by 200 mM NaCl treatment. …

Trust In Visualization (And What It Has To Do With Theory), Thomas Wischgoll Jan 2018

Trust In Visualization (And What It Has To Do With Theory), Thomas Wischgoll

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

There are different issues with trust involved when working with domain experts to visualize their data. There may be limitations with the data that require special precautions, such as sensitivity or security limitations. It may have taken a lot of effort to collect or create the data so that a certain level of trust is required for the domain expert to share the data. At the same time, the domain expert needs to be able to trust in the final visualization results. This presentation discusses these issues with trust and what requirements for a theoretical foundation this results in. Furthermore, …

An Optimizing Java Translation Framework For Automated Checkpointing And Strong Mobility, Arvind Kumar Saini Jan 2018

An Optimizing Java Translation Framework For Automated Checkpointing And Strong Mobility, Arvind Kumar Saini

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Long-running programs, e.g., in high-performance computing, need to

write periodic checkpoints of their execution state to disk to allow

them to recover from node failure. Manually adding checkpointing code

to an application, however, is very tedious. The mechanisms needed

for writing the execution state of a program to disk and restoring it

are similar to those needed for migrating a running thread or a mobile

object. We have extended a source-to-source translation scheme that

allows the migration of mobile Java objects with running threads to

make it more general and allow it to be used for automated

checkpointing. Our translation …

The Effect Of Poplar Psngs1.2 Overexpression On Growth, Secondary Cell Wall, And Fiber Characteristics In Tobacco, Tingting Lu, Lulu Liu, Minjing Wei, Yingying Liu, Zianshang Qu, Chuanping Yang, Hairong Wei, Zhigang Wei

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

The glutamine synthetase (GS1) is a key enzyme that catalyzes the reaction of glutamate and ammonia to produce glutamine in the nitrogen (N) metabolism. Previous studies on GS1s in several plant species suggest that overexpression of GS1s can enhance N utilization, accelerate plant vegetative growth, and change wood formation. In this study, we isolated a GS1 gene, termed PsnGS1.2, from Populus simonii × Populus nigra. This gene was expressed at a higher level in roots, and relatively lower but detectable levels in xylem, leaves and phloem of P. simonii × P. nigra. The protein encoded by PsnGS1.2 is …

The Accuracy, Fairness, And Limits Of Predicting Recidivism, Julie Dressel, Hany Farid Jan 2018

The Accuracy, Fairness, And Limits Of Predicting Recidivism, Julie Dressel, Hany Farid

Dartmouth Scholarship

Algorithms for predicting recidivism are commonly used to assess a criminal defendant’s likelihood of committing a crime. These predictions are used in pretrial, parole, and sentencing decisions. Proponents of these systems argue that big data and advanced machine learning make these analyses more accurate and less biased than humans. We show, however, that the widely used commercial risk assessment software COMPAS is no more accurate or fair than predictions made by people with little or no criminal justice expertise. We further show that a simple linear predictor provided with only two features is nearly equivalent to COMPAS with its 137 …

A Hierarchical Feature Extraction Model For Multi-Label Mechanical Patent Classification, Jie Hu, Shaobo Li, Jianjun Hu, Guanci Yang Jan 2018

A Hierarchical Feature Extraction Model For Multi-Label Mechanical Patent Classification, Jie Hu, Shaobo Li, Jianjun Hu, Guanci Yang

Faculty Publications

Various studies have focused on feature extraction methods for automatic patent classification in recent years. However, most of these approaches are based on the knowledge from experts in related domains. Here we propose a hierarchical feature extraction model (HFEM) for multi-label mechanical patent classification, which is able to capture both local features of phrases as well as global and temporal semantics. First, a n-gram feature extractor based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is designed to extract salient local lexical-level features. Next, a long dependency feature extraction model based on the bidirectional long–short-term memory (BiLSTM) neural network model is proposed to …

A Fast And Robust Extrinsic Calibration For Rgb-D Camera Networks, Po-Chang Su, Ju Shen, Wanxin Xu, Sen-Ching S. Cheung, Ying Luo

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

From object tracking to 3D reconstruction, RGB-Depth (RGB-D) camera networks play an increasingly important role in many vision and graphics applications. Practical applications often use sparsely-placed cameras to maximize visibility, while using as few cameras as possible to minimize cost. In general, it is challenging to calibrate sparse camera networks due to the lack of shared scene features across different camera views. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm that can accurately and rapidly calibrate the geometric relationships across an arbitrary number of RGB-D cameras on a network. Our work has a number of novel features. First, to cope …

A Patient-Specific Treatment Model For Graves’ Hyperthyroidism, Balamurugan Pandiyan, Stephen J. Merrill, Flavia Di Bari, Alessandro Antonelli, Salvatore Benvenga

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Background: Graves’ is disease an autoimmune disorder of the thyroid gland caused by circulating anti-thyroid receptor antibodies (TRAb) in the serum. TRAb mimics the action of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and stimulates the thyroid hormone receptor (TSHR), which results in hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland) and goiter. Methimazole (MMI) is used for hyperthyroidism treatment for patients with Graves’ disease.

Methods: We have developed a model using a system of ordinary differential equations for hyperthyroidism treatment with MMI. The model has four state variables, namely concentration of MMI (in mg/L), concentration of free thyroxine - FT4 (in pg/mL), and concentration of TRAb …

Regrets, I'Ve Had A Few: When Regretful Experiences Do (And Don't) Compel Users To Leave Facebook, Shion Guha, Eric P.S. Baumer, Geri K. Gay

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Previous work has explored regretful experiences on social media. In parallel, scholars have examined how people do not use social media. This paper aims to synthesize these two research areas and asks: Do regretful experiences on social media influence people to (consider) not using social media? How might this influence differ for different sorts of regretful experiences? We adopted a mixed methods approach, combining topic modeling, logistic regressions, and contingency analysis to analyze data from a web survey with a demographically representative sample of US internet users (n=515) focusing on their Facebook use. We found that experiences that arise because …

An Overview Of The Usage Of Default Passwords, Brandon Knierem, Xiaolu Zhang, Philip Levine, Frank Breitinger, Ibrahim Baggili

Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

The recent Mirai botnet attack demonstrated the danger of using default passwords and showed it is still a major problem. In this study we investigated several common applications and their password policies. Specifically, we analyzed if these applications: (1) have default passwords or (2) allow the user to set a weak password (i.e., they do not properly enforce a password policy). Our study shows that default passwords are still a significant problem: 61% of applications inspected initially used a default or blank password. When changing the password, 58% allowed a blank password, 35% allowed a weak password of 1 character.

A Group-Based Energy Harvesting Mac Protocol With Ap Scheduling In Machine-To-Machine Networks, Ce Zhou, Yunmin Kim, Tae-Jin Lee

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications, an enormous number of devices are subject to the battery limitation. Recently, an attractive energy harvesting technology called energy beamforming has shown great potential to make wireless devices self-powering. Motivated by this, according to the IEEE 802.11ah, a group-based energy harvesting Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol with the strategy of AP scheduling is designed in the paper to address the energy shortage without much reduction in system throughput. In the proposed protocol, nodes first contend for the transmission opportunities, and then data and energy transfer simultaneously by the AP scheduling scheme. Multiple Power Beacons (PBs) are …

Natural Language, Mixed-Initiative Personal Assistant Agents, Joshua W. Buck, Saverio Perugini, Tam W. Nguyen

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The increasing popularity and use of personal voice assistant technologies, such as Siri and Google Now, is driving and expanding progress toward the long-term and lofty goal of using artificial intelligence to build human-computer dialog systems capable of understanding natural language. While dialog-based systems such as Siri support utterances communicated through natural language, they are limited in the flexibility they afford to the user in interacting with the system and, thus, support primarily action-requesting and information-seeking tasks. Mixed-initiative interaction, on the other hand, is a flexible interaction technique where the user and the system act as equal participants in an …

Component Tree Analysis Of Cystovirus Φ6 Nucleocapsid Cryo-Em Single Particle Reconstructions, Lucas Oliveira, Ze Ye, Al Katz, Alexandra Alimova, Hui Wei, Gabor T. Herman, Paul Gottlieb

Publications and Research

The 3-dimensional structure of the nucleocapsid (NC) of bacteriophage φ6 is described utilizing component tree analysis, a topological and geometric image descriptor. The component trees are derived from density maps of cryo-electron microscopy single particle reconstructions. Analysis determines position and occupancy of structure elements responsible for RNA packaging and transcription. Occupancy of the hexameric nucleotide triphosphorylase (P4) and RNA polymerase (P2) are found to be essentially complete in the NC. The P8 protein lattice likely fixes P4 and P2 in place during maturation. We propose that the viral procapsid (PC) is a dynamic structural intermediate where the P4 and P2 …

This survey research examined social networking sites (SNS) internal to the company to determine how SNS use affects attitudes, and ultimately turnover intentions. We hypothesize that due to social capital, emotional dissonance, and conservation of resource theories, work SNS use will decrease work isolation, which will decrease work-related attitudes and increase turnover intentions. Due to social capital theory, we propose that work SNS use will decrease work isolation. Due to emotional dissonance theory, we hypothesize that work isolation will decrease positive emotions and job satisfaction, and increase job tensions, such as work stress. All three of these factors will increase …
