Examining The Use Of Amazon’S Mechanical Turk For Edge Extraction Of The Occlusal Surface Of Fossilized Bovid Teeth, George K. Thiruvathukal, Gregory J. Matthews, Maxwell P. Luetkemeier, Juliet K. Brophy

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

In order to reconstruct environments associated with Plio-Pleistocene hominins in southern Africa, researchers frequently rely upon the animals associated with the hominins, in particular, animals in the Family Bovidae. Bovids in southern Africa are typically identified by their teeth. However, identifying the taxon of a bovid tooth is challenging due to various biasing factors. Furthermore, inaccurate identification of fossil bovids can have significant consequences on the reconstructed paleoenvironment. Recent research on the classification of bovid fossil teeth has relied on using elliptical Fourier analysis to summarize the shape of the outline of the occlusal surface of the tooth and the …

Obesity-Induces Organ And Tissue Specific Tight Junction Restructuring And Barrier Deregulation By Claudin Switching, Rizwan Ahmad, Bilal Rah, Dhundy Bastola, Punita Dhawan, Amar B. Singh Jul 2017

Obesity-Induces Organ And Tissue Specific Tight Junction Restructuring And Barrier Deregulation By Claudin Switching, Rizwan Ahmad, Bilal Rah, Dhundy Bastola, Punita Dhawan, Amar B. Singh

Interdisciplinary Informatics Faculty Publications

Obesity increases susceptibility to multiple organ disorders, however, underlying mechanisms remain unclear. The subclinical inflammation assisted by obesity-induced gut permeability may underlie obesity-associated co-morbidities. Despite eminent clinical significance of the obesity led gut barrier abnormalities, its precise molecular regulation remains unclear. It is also unknown whether barrier deregulations, similar to the gut, characterize other vital organs in obese individuals. The claudin family of proteins is integral to the tight junction (TJ), the apical cell-cell adhesion and a key regulator of the epithelial barrier. Using comprehensive physiological and biochemical analysis of intestinal and renal tissues from high-fat diet fed mice, critical …

Conflict-Free Vertex Coloring Of Planar Graphs, Shawn Seymour Jul 2017

Conflict-Free Vertex Coloring Of Planar Graphs, Shawn Seymour

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

The conflict-free coloring problem is a variation of the vertex coloring problem, a classical NP-hard optimization problem. The conflict-free coloring problem aims to color a possibly proper subset of vertices such that there is a unique color within the closed neighborhood (a vertex and its neighbors) of every vertex. This paper presents recent findings and heuristics to solve the conflict-free coloring problem on both general graphs and planar graphs.

Touchscreen Smartphone User Interfaces For Older Adults, Ai Sano

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

Today the world is experiencing the rapid growth of the older population. The number of older adults who own digital devices such as smartphones is increasing as well. The current smartphone user interfaces, however, appear not optimized for older adults. When designing smartphone user interfaces for older adults, we must consider their age-related physical and cognitive changes, which most likely affect their user experience. The present paper explores smartphone user interface guidelines for older adults and heuristics for evaluating the usability of Android launchers for older adults as well as a research study that developed an Android launcher for older …

Identifying Twitter Spam By Utilizing Random Forests, Humza S. Haider Jul 2017

Identifying Twitter Spam By Utilizing Random Forests, Humza S. Haider

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

The use of Twitter has rapidly grown since the first tweet in 2006. The number of spammers on Twitter shows a similar increase. Classifying users into spammers and non-spammers has been heavily researched, and new methods for spam detection are developing rapidly. One of these classification techniques is known as random forests. We examine three studies that employ random forests using user based features, geo-tagged features, and time dependent features. Each study showed high accuracy rates and F-measures with the exception of one model that had a test set with a more realistic proportion of spam relative to typical testing …

An Overview Of Modern Global Illumination, Skye A. Antinozzi Jul 2017

An Overview Of Modern Global Illumination, Skye A. Antinozzi

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

Advancements in graphical hardware call for innovative solutions, which can improve the realism of computer generated lighting. These innovative solutions aim to generate state of the art computer generated lighting through a combination of intelligent global illumination models and the use of modern hardware. The solution described in this paper achieves global illumination by ray tracing over geometry within a 3D scene from distributed light field probes and proceeds to shade the scene with a deferred renderer. Such a solution provides the flexibility and robustness that many other global illumination models have previously lacked while still achieving realistic lighting that …

Essays On Crowdfunding: Exploring The Funding And Post-Funding Phases And Outcomes, Onochie Fan-Osuala

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the recent years, crowdfunding (a phenomenon where individuals collectively contribute money to back different goals and projects through the internet) has been gaining a lot of attention especially for its socio-economic impact. This dissertation explores this phenomenon in three distinct but related essays. The first essay explores the nature and dynamics of backers’ contributions and uses the insights generated to develop a forecasting model that can predict crowdfunding campaign outcomes. The second essay investigates how creators’ crowdfunding campaign design decisions impact their funding and post-funding outcomes. Interestingly, the essay highlights that certain crowdfunding campaign design decisions have differential effects …

Harmonic Distortion Minimization In Power Grids With Wind And Electric Vehicles, Ritam Misra, Sumit Paudyal, Oguzhan Ceylan, Paras Mandal Jul 2017

Harmonic Distortion Minimization In Power Grids With Wind And Electric Vehicles, Ritam Misra, Sumit Paudyal, Oguzhan Ceylan, Paras Mandal

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Power-electronic interfacing based devices such as wind generators (WGs) and electrical vehicles (EVs) cause harmonic distortions on the power grid. Higher penetration and uncoordinated operation of WGs and EVs can lead to voltage and current harmonic distortions, which may exceed IEEE limits. It is interesting to note that WGs and EVs have some common harmonic profiles. Therefore, when EVs are connected to the grid, the harmonic pollution EVs impart onto the grid can be reduced to some extent by the amount of wind power injecting into the grid and vice versa. In this context, this work studies the impact of …

Signal Processing On Graphs Using Kron Reduction And Spline Interpolation, Michael Dennis, Enrico Au-Yeung Jul 2017

Signal Processing On Graphs Using Kron Reduction And Spline Interpolation, Michael Dennis, Enrico Au-Yeung

DePaul Discoveries

In applications such as image processing, the data is given in a regular pattern with a known structure, such as a grid of pixels. However, it is becoming increasingly common for large datasets to have some irregular structure. In image recognition, one of the most successful methods is wavelet analysis, also commonly known as multi-resolution analysis. Our project is to develop and explore this powerful technique in the setting where the data is not stored in the form of a rectangular table with rows and columns of pixels. While the data sets will still have a lot of structure to …

Multiple Attributes Decision Fusion For Wireless Sensor Networks Based On Intuitionistic Fuzzy Set, Zhenjiang Zhang, Ziqi Hao, Sherali Zeadally, Jing Zhang, Bowen Han, Han-Chieh Chao

Information Science Faculty Publications

Decision fusion is an important issue in wireless sensor networks (WSN), and intuitionistic fuzzy set (IFS) is a novel method for dealing with uncertain data. We propose a multi-attribute decision fusion model based on IFS, which includes two aspects: data distribution-based IFS construction algorithm (DDBIFCA) and the category similarity weight-based TOPSIS intuitionistic fuzzy decision algorithm (CSWBT-IFS). The DDBIFCA is an IFS construction algorithm that transforms the original attribute values into intuitionistic fuzzy measures, and the CSWBT-IFS is an intuitionistic fuzzy aggregation algorithm improved by the traditional TOPSIS algorithm, which combines intuitionistic fuzzy values of different attributes and obtains a final …

Cnn Based 3d Facial Expression Recognition Using Masking And Landmark Features, Huiyuan Yang, Lijun Yin

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Automatically recognizing facial expression is an important part for human-machine interaction. In this paper, we first review the previous studies on both 2D and 3D facial expression recognition, and then summarize the key research questions to solve in the future. Finally, we propose a 3D facial expression recognition (FER) algorithm using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and landmark features/masks, which is invariant to pose and illumination variations due to the solely use of 3D geometric facial models without any texture information. The proposed method has been tested on two public 3D facial expression databases: BU-4DFE and BU-3DFE. The results show that …

Detecting User Demographics In Twitter To Inform Health Trends In Social Media, Christopher R. Markson Jul 2017

Detecting User Demographics In Twitter To Inform Health Trends In Social Media, Christopher R. Markson

Dissertations

The widespread and popular use of social media and social networking applications offer a promising opportunity for gaining knowledge and insights regarding population health conditions thanks to the diversity and abundance of online user-generated information (UGHI) relating to healthcare and well-being. However, users on social media and social networking sites often do not supply their complete demographic information, which greatly undermines the value of the aforementioned information for health 2.0 research, e.g., for discerning disparities across population groups in certain health conditions. To recover the missing user demographic information, existing methods observe a limited scope of user behaviors, such as …

Performance Optimization And Energy Efficiency Of Big-Data Computing Workflows, Tong Shu

Dissertations

Next-generation e-science is producing colossal amounts of data, now frequently termed as Big Data, on the order of terabyte at present and petabyte or even exabyte in the predictable future. These scientific applications typically feature data-intensive workflows comprised of moldable parallel computing jobs, such as MapReduce, with intricate inter-job dependencies. The granularity of task partitioning in each moldable job of such big data workflows has a significant impact on workflow completion time, energy consumption, and financial cost if executed in clouds, which remains largely unexplored. This dissertation conducts an in-depth investigation into the properties of moldable jobs and provides an …

Hybrid Based Approaches For Software Fault Localization And Specification Mining, Bui Tien Duy Le Jul 2017

Hybrid Based Approaches For Software Fault Localization And Specification Mining, Bui Tien Duy Le

Dissertations and Theses Collection

Debugging programs and writing formal specifications are essential but expensive processes to maintain quality and reliability of software systems. Developers often have to debug and create specifications manually, which take a lot of their time and effort. Recently, several automated solutions have been proposed to help developers alleviate the cost of manual labor in the two processes. In particular, fault localization techniques help developer debug by accepting textual information in bug reports or program spectra (i.e., a record of which program elements are executed for each test case). Their output is a ranked list of program elements that are likely …

How To Use Absolute-Error-Minimizing Software To Minimize Relative Error: Practitioner's Guide, Afshin Gholamy, Vladik Kreinovich Jul 2017

How To Use Absolute-Error-Minimizing Software To Minimize Relative Error: Practitioner's Guide, Afshin Gholamy, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many engineering and scientific problems, there is a need to find the parameters of a dependence from the experimental data. There exist several software packages that find the values for these parameters -- values for which the mean square value of the absolute approximation error is the smallest. In practice, however, we are often interested in minimizing the mean square value of the relative approximation error. In this paper, we show how we can use the absolute-error-minimizing software to minimize the relative error.

How Technology Is Reshaping Financial Services: Essays On Consumer Behavior In Card, Channel And Cryptocurrency Services, Dan Geng Jul 2017

How Technology Is Reshaping Financial Services: Essays On Consumer Behavior In Card, Channel And Cryptocurrency Services, Dan Geng

Dissertations and Theses Collection

The financial services sector has seen dramatic technological innovations in the last several years associated with the “fintech revolution.” Major changes have taken place in channel management, credit card rewards marketing, cryptocurren-cy, and wealth management, and have influenced consumers’ banking behavior in different ways. As a consequence, there has been a growing demand for banks to rethink their business models and operations to adapt to changing consumer be-havior and counter the competitive pressure from other banks and non-bank play-ers. In this dissertation, I study consumer behavior related to different aspects of financial innovation by addressing research questions that are motivated …

Mining Diverse Consumer Preferences For Bundling And Recommendation, Ha Loc Do Jul 2017

Mining Diverse Consumer Preferences For Bundling And Recommendation, Ha Loc Do

Dissertations and Theses Collection

That consumers share similar tastes on some products does not guarantee their agreement on other products. Therefore, both similarity and dierence should be taken into account for a more rounded view on consumer preferences. This manuscript focuses on mining this diversity of consumer preferences from two perspectives, namely 1) between consumers and 2) between products. Diversity of preferences between consumers is studied in the context of recommendation systems. In some preference models, measuring similarities in preferences between two consumers plays the key role. These approaches assume two consumers would share certain degree of similarity on any products, ignoring the fact …

Real-Time Bursty Topic Detection And Virality Forecasting In Microblogs, Wei Xie Jul 2017

Real-Time Bursty Topic Detection And Virality Forecasting In Microblogs, Wei Xie

Dissertations and Theses Collection

Microblogs such as Twitter have become the largest social platforms for users around the world to share anything happening around them with friends and beyond. A bursty topic in microblogs is one that triggers a surge of relevant tweets within a short period of time, which often reflects important events of mass interest. How to leverage microblogs for early detection and further impact analysis of bursty topics has, therefore, become an important research problem with immense practical value.

Shareabel: Secure Sharing Of Mhealth Data Through Cryptographically-Enforced Access Control, Emily Greene Jul 2017

Shareabel: Secure Sharing Of Mhealth Data Through Cryptographically-Enforced Access Control, Emily Greene

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

Owners of mobile-health apps and devices often want to share their mHealth data with others, such as physicians, therapists, coaches, and caregivers. For privacy reasons, however, they typically want to share a limited subset of their information with each recipient according to their preferences. In this paper, we introduce ShareABEL, a scalable, usable, and practical system that allows mHealth-data owners to specify access-control policies and to cryptographically enforce those policies so that only parties with the proper corresponding permissions are able to decrypt data. The design (and prototype implementation) of this system makes three contributions: (1) it applies cryptographically-enforced access-control …

Soft Sides Of Software, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Faheem Ahmed, Fabio Queda Silva Jul 2017

Soft Sides Of Software, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Faheem Ahmed, Fabio Queda Silva

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Software is a field of rapid changes: the best technology today becomes obsolete in the near future. If we review the graduate attributes of any of the software engineering programs across the world, life-long learning is one of them. The social and psychological aspects of professional development is linked with rewards. In organizations, where people are provided with learning opportunities and there is a culture that rewards learning, people embrace changes easily. However, the software industry tends to be short-sighted and its primary focus is more on current project success; it usually ignores the capacity building of the individual or …

Full Simulation For The Qweak Experiment At 1.16 And 0.877 Gev And Their Impact On Extracting The Pv Asymmetry In The N→Δ A Transition, Hend Abdullah Nuhait Jul 2017

Full Simulation For The Qweak Experiment At 1.16 And 0.877 Gev And Their Impact On Extracting The Pv Asymmetry In The N→Δ A Transition, Hend Abdullah Nuhait

Doctoral Dissertations

The Qweak project is seeking to find new physics beyond the Standard Model. It is aimed to measure the weak charge of the proton, which has never been measured, at 4% precision at low momentum transfer. The experiment is performed by scattering electrons from protons and exploiting parity violation in the weak interaction at low four-momentum transfer.

In this experiment, two measurements were considered: which are elastic and inelastic. The elastic is to measure the proton's weak charge. In addition, the inelastic asymmetry measurement, which will extract the low energy constant dΔ. That measurement works in the neutral current …

Practical Need For Algebraic (Equality-Type) Solutions Of Interval Equations And For Extended-Zero Solutions, Ludmila Dymova, Pavel Sevastjanov, Andrzej Pownuk, Vladik Kreinovich Jul 2017

Practical Need For Algebraic (Equality-Type) Solutions Of Interval Equations And For Extended-Zero Solutions, Ludmila Dymova, Pavel Sevastjanov, Andrzej Pownuk, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

One of the main problems in interval computations is solving systems of equations under interval uncertainty. Usually, interval computation packages consider united, tolerance, and control solutions. In this paper, we explain the practical need for algebraic (equality-type) solutions, when we look for solutions for which both sides are equal. In situations when such a solution is not possible, we provide a justification for extended-zero solutions, in which we ignore intervals of the type [−a, a].

Granular Approach To Data Processing Under Probabilistic Uncertainty, Andrzej Pownuk, Vladik Kreinovich Jul 2017

Granular Approach To Data Processing Under Probabilistic Uncertainty, Andrzej Pownuk, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many real-life situations, uncertainty can be naturally described as a combination of several components, components which are described by probabilistic, fuzzy, interval, etc. granules. In such situations, to process this uncertainty, it is often beneficial to take this granularity into account by processing these granules separately and then combining the results.

In this paper, we show that granular computing can help even in situations when there is no such natural decomposition into granules: namely, we can often speed up processing of uncertainty if we first (artificially) decompose the original uncertainty into appropriate granules.

Spatial-Semantic Image Search By Visual Feature Synthesis, Mai Long, Hailin Jin, Chen Fang, Feng Liu

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The performance of image retrieval has been improved tremendously in recent years through the use of deep feature representations. Most existing methods, however, aim to retrieve images that are visually similar or semantically relevant to the query, irrespective of spatial configuration. In this paper, we develop a spatial-semantic image search technology that enables users to search for images with both semantic and spatial constraints by manipulating concept text-boxes on a 2D query canvas. We train a convolutional neural network to synthesize appropriate visual features that captures the spatial-semantic constraints from the user canvas query. We directly optimize the retrieval performance …

Mining Non-Lattice Subgraphs For Detecting Missing Hierarchical Relations And Concepts In Snomed Ct, Licong Cui, Wei Zhu, Shiqiang Tao, James T. Case, Olivier Bodenreider, Guo-Qiang Zhang

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Objective: Quality assurance of large ontological systems such as SNOMED CT is an indispensable part of the terminology management lifecycle. We introduce a hybrid structural-lexical method for scalable and systematic discovery of missing hierarchical relations and concepts in SNOMED CT.

Material and Methods: All non-lattice subgraphs (the structural part) in SNOMED CT are exhaustively extracted using a scalable MapReduce algorithm. Four lexical patterns (the lexical part) are identified among the extracted non-lattice subgraphs. Non-lattice subgraphs exhibiting such lexical patterns are often indicative of missing hierarchical relations or concepts. Each lexical pattern is associated with a potential specific type of error. …
