Pervasive Parallel And Distributed Computing In A Liberal Arts College Curriculum, Tia Newhall, Andrew Danner, Kevin C. Webb
Computer Science Faculty Works
We present a model for incorporating parallel and distributed computing (PDC) throughout an undergraduate CS curriculum. Our curriculum is designed to introduce students early to parallel and distributed computing topics and to expose students to these topics repeatedly in the context of a wide variety of CS courses. The key to our approach is the development of a required intermediate-level course that serves as a introduction to computer systems and parallel computing. It serves as a requirement for every CS major and minor and is a prerequisite to upper-level courses that expand on parallel and distributed computing topics in different …

Motion-Capture-Based Hand Gesture Recognition For Computing And Control, Andrew Gardner
Motion-Capture-Based Hand Gesture Recognition For Computing And Control, Andrew Gardner
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the study and development of algorithms that enable the analysis and recognition of hand gestures in a motion capture environment. Central to this work is the study of unlabeled point sets in a more abstract sense. Evaluations of proposed methods focus on examining their generalization to users not encountered during system training.
In an initial exploratory study, we compare various classification algorithms based upon multiple interpretations and feature transformations of point sets, including those based upon aggregate features (e.g. mean) and a pseudo-rasterization of the capture space. We find aggregate feature classifiers to be balanced across …

A Software Development Process For Freshman Undergraduate Students, Catherine Higgins, Fredrick Mtenzi, Ciaran O’Leary, Orla Hanratty, Claire Mcavinia
Book Chapters / Conference Papers
This conceptual paper presents work which is part of an ongoing research project into the design of a software development process aimed at freshman, undergraduate computing students. The process of how to plan and develop a solution is a topic that is addressed very lightly in many freshman, undergraduate courses which can leave novices open to developing habit-forming, maladaptive cognitive practices. The conceptual software development process described in this paper has a learning process at its core which centres on declarative knowledge (in the form of threshold concepts) and procedural knowledge (in the form of computational thinking skills) scaffolding freshman …

Clustering Opportunistic Ant-Based Routing Protocol For Wireless Sensor Networks, Xinlu Li, Brian Keegan, Fredrick Mtenzi
Book Chapters / Conference Papers
The wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have a wide range of applications in many ereas, including many kinds of uses such as environmental monitoring and chemical detection. Due to the restriction of energy supply, the improvement of routing performance is the major motivation in WSNs. We present a Clustering Opportunistic Ant-based Routing protocol (COAR), which comprises the following main contributions to achieve high energy efficient and well load-balance: (i) in the clustering algorithm, we caculate the theoretical value of energy dissipation, which will make the number of clusters fluctuate around the expected value, (ii) define novel heuristic function and pheromone update …

Multi-Gpu Accelerated High-Fidelity Simulations Of Beam-Beam Effects In Particle Colliders, Naga Sai Ravi Teja Majeti
Multi-Gpu Accelerated High-Fidelity Simulations Of Beam-Beam Effects In Particle Colliders, Naga Sai Ravi Teja Majeti
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
Numerical simulation of beam-beam effects in particle colliders are crucial in understanding and the design of future machines such as electron-ion colliders (JLEIC), linac-ring machines (eRHIC) or LHeC. These simulations model the non-linear collision dynamics of two counter rotating beams in particle colliders for millions of turns. In particular, at each turn, the algorithm simulates the collision of two directed beams propagating at different speeds with different number of bunches each. This leads to non-pair-wise collisions of beams with different number of bunches that results in an increase in the computational load proportional to the number of bunches in the …

Querying And Visualization Of Moving Objects Using Constraint Databases, Semere M. Woldemariam
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Good querying and visualization of moving objects and their trajectories is still an open problem. This thesis investigates three types of moving objects. First, projectiles, whose parabolic motion is difficult to represent. Second, moving objects that slide down a slope. The representation of these objects is challenging because of their accelerating motion. Third, the motion of migrating animals. The motion of migrating animals is challenging because it also involves some spatio-temporal interpolation. The thesis shows a solution to these problems using ideas from physics and an implementation in the MLPQ constraint databases system. The MLPQ implementation enables several complex spatio-temporal …

Many machine learning algorithms have been used to classify pixels in Landsat imagery. The maximum likelihood classifier is the widely-accepted classifier. Non-parametric methods of classification include neural networks and decision trees. In this research work, we implemented decision trees using the C4.5 algorithm to classify pixels of a scene from Juneau, Alaska area obtained with Landsat 8, Operation Land Imager (OLI). One of the concerns with decision trees is that they are often over fitted with training set data, which yields less accuracy in classifying unknown data. To study the effect of overfitting, we have considered noisy training set data …

In this paper, we develop a new approach to deal with neutrosphic shortest path problem in a network in which each edge weight (or length) is represented as triangular fuzzy neutrosophic number. The proposed algorithm also gives the shortest path length from source node to destination node using ranking function. Finally, an illustrative example is also included to demonstrate our proposed approach.

RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) is anticipated to be a core technology that will be used in many practical applications of our life in near future. It has received considerable attention within the healthcare for almost a decade now. The technology’s promise to efficiently track hospital supplies, medical equipment, medications and patients is an attractive proposition to the healthcare industry. However, the prospect of wide spread use of RFID tags in the healthcare area has also triggered discussions regarding privacy, particularly because RFID data in transit may easily be intercepted and can be send to track its user (owner). In a …

Homogenization Of Plastic Deformation In Heterogeneous Lamella Structures, Rui Yuan, Irene J. Beyerlein, Caizhi Zhou
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
It has been shown that unlike its constituent nanocrystalline (NC) phase, a heterogeneous lamella (HL) composite comprising NC and coarse-grain layers exhibits greatly improved ductility. To understand the origin of this enhancement, we present a 3D discrete dislocation, crystal plasticity finite element model to study the development of strains across this microstructure. Here we show that the HL structure homogenizes the plastic strains in the NC layer, weakening the effect of strain concentrations. These findings can provide valuable insight into the effects of material length scales on material instabilities, which is needed to design heterogeneous structures with superior properties.

Recognition of emotional state and diagnosis of trauma related illnesses such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) using speech signals have been active research topics over the past decade. A typical emotion recognition system consists of three components: speech segmentation, feature extraction and emotion identification. Various speech features have been developed for emotional state recognition which can be divided into three categories, namely, excitation, vocal tract and prosodic. However, the capabilities of different feature categories and advanced machine learning techniques have not been fully explored for emotion recognition and PTSD diagnosis. For PTSD assessment, clinical diagnosis through structured interviews is a …

Finite Element Modeling Driven By Health Care And Aerospace Applications, Fotios Drakopoulos
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
This thesis concerns the development, analysis, and computer implementation of mesh generation algorithms encountered in finite element modeling in health care and aerospace. The finite element method can reduce a continuous system to a discrete idealization that can be solved in the same manner as a discrete system, provided the continuum is discretized into a finite number of simple geometric shapes (e.g., triangles in two dimensions or tetrahedrons in three dimensions).
In health care, namely anatomic modeling, a discretization of the biological object is essential to compute tissue deformation for physics-based simulations. This thesis proposes an efficient procedure to convert …

Jfix: Semantics-Based Repair Of Java Programs Via Symbolic Pathfinder, Xuan Bach D. Le, Duc-Hiep Chu, David Lo, Goues Le, Willem Visser
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recently there has been a proliferation of automated program repair (APR) techniques, targeting various programming languages. Such techniques can be generally classified into two families: syntactic- and semantics-based. Semantics-based APR, on which we focus, typically uses symbolic execution to infer semantic constraints and then program synthesis to construct repairs conforming to them. While syntactic-based APR techniques have been shown success- ful on bugs in real-world programs written in both C and Java, semantics-based APR techniques mostly target C programs. This leaves empirical comparisons of the APR families not fully explored, and developers without a Java-based semantics APR technique. We present …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
While most existing indoor localization techniques are device-based, many emerging applications such as intruder detection and elderly monitoring drive the needs of device-free localization, in which the target can be localized without any device attached. Among the diverse techniques, received signal strength (RSS) fingerprint-based methods are popular because of the wide availability of RSS readings in most commodity hardware. However, current fingerprint-based systems suffer from high human labor cost to update the fingerprint database and low accuracy due to the large degree of RSS variations. In this paper, we propose a fingerprint-based device-free localization system named iUpdater to significantly reduce …

How To Enable Future Faster Payments? An Evaluation Of A Hybrid Payments Settlement Mechanism, Zhiling Guo, Yuanzhi Huang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In the era of Fintech innovation and e-commerce, faster settlement of massive retail transactions is crucial for business growth and financial system stability. However, speeding up payments settlement can create periodic liquidity shortfalls to banks which would incur high cost of funds in the settlement process. We propose a new hybrid settlement mechanism design that integrates features of real-time gross settlement, deferred net settlement, and central queue management structure. The hybrid mechanism is managed by an intermediary and is particularly suitable to settle large volume of small-value retail payments. We evaluate the mechanism using computer experiments and simulation. We find …
