Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Linked Data (LD) has been an active research area for more than 6 years and many aspects about publishing, retrieving, linking, and cleaning Linked Data have been investigated. There seems to be a broad and general agreement that in principle LD datasets can be very useful for solving a wide variety of problems ranging from practical industrial analytics to highly specific research problems. Having these notions in mind, we started exploring the use of notable LD datasets such as DBpedia, Freebase, Geonames and others for a commercial application. However, it turns out that using these datasets in realistic settings is …

Cognitive performance and fatigue are well known to be inversely related. Continuous and sustained actions in operational environments typically lead to reduced sleep normally required to perform optimally. These operational environments subject the warfighter to intense physical and mental exertion. Because fatigue continues to be an occupational hazard, leading to cognitive defects in performance, there has been a recognized need for real-time detection technologies that minimize fatigue-induced mishaps. I the current study, 23 subjects were subjected to 36h of sleep deprivation and cognitive psychomotor vigilance and automated neuropsychological assessment metric tests were conducted over the last 24 h of sleep …

Effect Of Step Rate On Foot Strike Pattern And Running Economy In Novice Runners, Janae Lynn Richardson May 2013

Effect Of Step Rate On Foot Strike Pattern And Running Economy In Novice Runners, Janae Lynn Richardson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Purpose—The objective was to examine if step rates ±5% or ±10% of a novice runner's preferred step rate (SR) is sufficient enough to shift a novice runner’s foot strike pattern (FSP) (rear-foot, mid-foot, forefoot) and whether these SR changes produce changes in the rate of submaximal oxygen consumption (VO2). Methods—Foot strike angle (FSA) was recorded using sagittal plane video images and VO2 was measured for novice runners while running on a treadmill at a constant speed during increased and decreased (±5% and ±10%) SR conditions. Foot strike angle was used to predict strike index (SI) (predicted strike index = [FSA …

Digital Labeling And Narrative Mapping In Mobile Remote Audio Signage: Verbalization Of Routes And Generation Of New Verbal Route Descriptions From Existing Route Sets, Tharun Tej Tammineni May 2013

Digital Labeling And Narrative Mapping In Mobile Remote Audio Signage: Verbalization Of Routes And Generation Of New Verbal Route Descriptions From Existing Route Sets, Tharun Tej Tammineni

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Independent navigation is a great challenge for people with visual impairments. In this project, we have designed and implemented an assisted navigation solution based on the ability of visually impaired travelers to interpret and contextualize verbal route descriptions. Previous studies have validated that if a route is verbally described in sufficient and appropriate manner then VI can use their orientation and mobility skills to successfully follow the route. In this project, we do not consider the issue how the VI will interpret the route descriptions, but we aim to identify and generate new verbal route descriptions from the existing route …

Conceptualizing Financial Loses As A Result Of Advanced Persistent Threats, Christopher Levine May 2013

Conceptualizing Financial Loses As A Result Of Advanced Persistent Threats, Christopher Levine

Honors College Theses

Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) attacks are the biggest threat in the computing world. Currently, there is ample information available on how these attacks occur and who supports these attacks. However, there is dearth of information available that adequately describes the potentiality for financial losses. These losses are a direct result of the attacks themselves, however these attacks could only operate with the support of well-funded groups, such as nation states. Therefore, it is important to understand this relationship to conceptualize how these losses occur. In exploring the results of both Operation Aurora and Stuxnet, two famous APT attacks, it is …

Interpreting And Reconstructing Data From Sensor Networks, Jonathan H. Guinther May 2013

Interpreting And Reconstructing Data From Sensor Networks, Jonathan H. Guinther

Computer Science Technical Reports

Geophysical phenomena are often three-dimensional, time-variant, and physically large, making them difficult to measure. As wireless sensor nodes become cheaper, smaller, and more powerful, using a sensor swarm as a sampling framework seems to be a viable approach to this problem. However, samples from the network can be sparse and unstructured, creating an incomplete picture. Thus, the question addressed by this project is the following: How can we easily construct and interpret the best model of the underlying reality over some domain, given a possibly sparse and irregular set of samples? We present the design, implementation, and evaluation of the …

Directed Percolation And The Abstract Tile Assembly Model, Tyler Garrett Moore May 2013

Directed Percolation And The Abstract Tile Assembly Model, Tyler Garrett Moore

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Self-assembly is a process by which simple components build complex structures through local interactions. Directed percolation is a statistical physical model for describing competitive spreading processes on lattices. The author describes an algorithm which can transform a tile assembly system in the abstract Tile Assembly Model into a directed percolation problem, and then shows simulations of the aTAM which support this algorithm. The author also investigates two new constructs designed for Erik Winfree's abstract Tile Assembly Model called the NULL tile and temperature 1.5. These constructs aid the translation between self-assembly and directed percolation and may assist self-assembly researchers in …

Automated Filtering And Attribution Of Archive Bathymetry Based On A Priori Knowledge, Rodney Wade Ladner

Master's Theses

Hydrographic offices hold large volumes of historical bathymetric data. Many of these valuable datasets were collected using older generation survey systems and contain little or no metadata. Current efforts to utilize these data require human intervention to remove outliers and assess quality. This thesis develops automated algorithms based on a priori knowledge of existing bathymetric topography to remove errant soundings and concurrently provide an estimate of uncertainty.

Software Fault Detection Via Grammar-Based Test Case Generation, Songqing Liu May 2013

Software Fault Detection Via Grammar-Based Test Case Generation, Songqing Liu

Student Work

Fault detection is helpful to cut down the failure causes by logically locating and eliminating defects. In this thesis, we present a novel fault detection technique via structured input data which can be represented by a grammar. We take a set of well-distributed test cases as input, each of which has a set of test requirements. We illustrate that test requirements come from structured data can be effectively used as coverage criteria to reduce the test suites. We then propose an automatic fault detection approach to locate software bugs which are shown in failed test cases. This method can be …

High Performance Network Communication Between High Frequency Application Servers And Android Tablets, Brandon L. Wolfe May 2013

High Performance Network Communication Between High Frequency Application Servers And Android Tablets, Brandon L. Wolfe

Honors Theses

This thesis will develop methods for comparing NORM protocol in unicast mode to TCP by simulating high performance network communication between Android tablets and high frequency application servers. Since mobile network conditions vary based on service provider or tower distance, we will test over a wide range of network conditions such as high delay or high loss, as well as high chances of packet corruption or duplication. We want to maximize speed of data delivery without sacrificing the integrity of the data. The methods used will be generically applicable to multiple operating system platforms and will be cross-platform compatible.

Identifying Robust Sift Features For Improved Image Alignment, Sanjay Abhinav Vemuri May 2013

Identifying Robust Sift Features For Improved Image Alignment, Sanjay Abhinav Vemuri

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we will study different ways to improve feature matching by increasing the quality and reducing the number of SIFT features. We created an algorithm to identify robust SIFT features by evaluating how invariant individual feature points are to changes in scale. This allows us to exclude poor SIFT feature points from the matching process and obtain better matching results in reduced time. We also developed techniques consider scale ratios and changes in object orientation when performing feature matching. This allows us to exclude false-positive feature matches and obtain better image alignment results.

Accelerating Optimistic Hla-Based Simulations In Virtual Execution Environments, Zengxiang Li, Xiaorong Li, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta, Wentong Cai, Stephen John Turner

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

High Level Architecture (HLA)-based simulations employing optimistic synchronization allows federates to process event and to advance simulation time freely at the risk of over-optimistic execution and execution rollbacks. In this paper, an adaptive resource provisioning system is proposed to accelerate optimistic HLA-based simulations in Virtual Execution Environment (VEE). A performance monitor is introduced using a middleware approach to measure the performance of individual federates transparently to the simulation application. Based on the performance measurements, a resource manager distributes the available computational resources to the federates, making them advance simulation time with comparable speeds. Our proposed approach is evaluated using a …

Nascent Nanocomputers: Dna Self-Assembly In O(1) Stages, Michael C. Barnes May 2013

Nascent Nanocomputers: Dna Self-Assembly In O(1) Stages, Michael C. Barnes

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

DNA self-assembly offers a potential for nanoscale microcircuits and computers. To make that potential possible requires the development of reliable and efficient tile assembly models. Efficiency is often achieved by minimizing tile complexity, as well as by evaluating the cost and reliability of the specific elements of each tile assembly model. We consider a 2D tile assembly model at temperature 1. The standard 2D tile assembly model at temperature 1 has a tile complexity of O(n) for the construction of exact, complete n x n squares. However, previous research found a staged tile assembly model achieved a tile complexity of …

Evolution Of Complex Features In Digital Organisms, Javier A. Magana May 2013

Evolution Of Complex Features In Digital Organisms, Javier A. Magana

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This thesis examines how complex features evolve in digital organisms, and how capabilities that evolved earlier provide a scaffold for evolving new features. I wanted to see how the organisms used previous adaptations to succeed in new environments, and how significant are these previous adaptations. The system used is the Avida platform, which is software that implements Darwinian evolution on self-replicating digital organisms. First, the system is seeded with ancestors that can only replicate, which gave a baseline for the quality of the task at the end of evolution. Second, the system used ancestors from a simpler environment as seeds. …

Gene Regulatory Network Reconstruction Using Dynamic Bayesian Networks, Haoni Li May 2013

Gene Regulatory Network Reconstruction Using Dynamic Bayesian Networks, Haoni Li

Dissertations

High-content technologies such as DNA microarrays can provide a system-scale overview of how genes interact with each other in a network context. Various mathematical methods and computational approaches have been proposed to reconstruct GRNs, including Boolean networks, information theory, differential equations and Bayesian networks. GRN reconstruction faces huge intrinsic challenges on both experimental and theoretical fronts, because the inputs and outputs of the molecular processes are unclear and the underlying principles are unknown or too complex.

In this work, we focused on improving the accuracy and speed of GRN reconstruction with Dynamic Bayesian based method. A commonly used structure-learning algorithm …

Geometrical And Probabilistic Methods For Determining Association Models And Structures Of Protein Complexes, Himanshu Chandola May 2013

Geometrical And Probabilistic Methods For Determining Association Models And Structures Of Protein Complexes, Himanshu Chandola

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Protein complexes play vital roles in cellular processes within living organisms. They are formed by interactions between either different proteins (hetero-oligomers) or identical proteins (homo-oligomers). In order to understand the functions of the complexes, it is important to know the manner in which they are assembled from the component subunits and their three dimensional structure. This thesis addresses both of these questions by developing geometrical and probabilistic methods for analyzing data from two complementary experiment types: Small Angle Scattering (SAS) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Data from an SAS experiment is a set of scattering intensities that can give …

Sampling For Complexity In Rendering, Jiawei Ou May 2013

Sampling For Complexity In Rendering, Jiawei Ou

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

As the visual effect and movie industries are striving for realism and high fidelity images, physically based lighting, global illumination, realistic materials, and highly tessellated geometry are gradually accepted and used in movie and game industries. Modern computer graphics has reached an unprecedented level of complexity. As a result, brute-force rendering methods become prohibitively expensive. For decades, computer graphics researchers have been tackling the complexity in rendering by introducing more advanced Monte Carlo integrators, efficient sampling and reconstruction algorithms, effective filtering techniques, sophisticated data structures, and new hardware architectures. In this thesis, we focus on deriving better sampling algorithms to …

Roulette Wheel Selection Game Player, Scott Tong May 2013

Roulette Wheel Selection Game Player, Scott Tong

Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Honors Projects

General Game Playing is a field of artificial intelligence that seeks to create programs capable of playing any game at an expert-level without the need for human aid. There are two major approaches to general game playing: simulation and heuristic. I focused on the move selection component of a common simulation strategy called Monte Carlo Tree Search. Traditionally, the selection step of Monte Carlo Tree Search uses an algorithm called Upper Confidence Bound Applied to Trees or UCT. In place of this algorithm, I investigated the applicability of a random roulette wheel style of selection. I studied the effectiveness of …

Your Love Is Public Now: Questioning The Use Of Personal Information In Authentication, Payas Gupta, Swapna Gottipati, Jing Jiang, Debin Gao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Most social networking platforms protect user's private information by limiting access to it to a small group of members, typically friends of the user, while allowing (virtually) everyone's access to the user's public data. In this paper, we exploit public data available on Facebook to infer users' undisclosed interests on their profile pages. In particular, we infer their undisclosed interests from the public data fetched using Graph APIs provided by Facebook. We demonstrate that simply liking a Facebook page does not corroborate that the user is interested in the page. Instead, we perform sentiment-oriented mining on various attributes of a …
