Necessary And Sufficient Conditions For Generalized Uniform Fuzzy Partitions, Michal Holčapek, Irina Perfilieva, Vilém Novák, Vladik Kreinovich May 2013

Necessary And Sufficient Conditions For Generalized Uniform Fuzzy Partitions, Michal Holčapek, Irina Perfilieva, Vilém Novák, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The fundamental concept in the theory of fuzzy transform (F-transform) is that of fuzzy partition. The original definition assumes that each two fuzzy subsets overlap in such a way that sum of membership degrees in each point is equal to 1. However, this condition can be generalized to obtain a denser fuzzy partition that leads to improvement of approximation properties of F-transform. However, a problem arises how one can effectively construct such type of fuzzy partitions. We use a generating function having special properties and it is not immediately clear whether it really defines a general uniform fuzzy partition. In …

Transparent And Precise Malware Analysis Using Virtualization: From Theory To Practice, Lok Kwong Yan May 2013

Transparent And Precise Malware Analysis Using Virtualization: From Theory To Practice, Lok Kwong Yan

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Dissertations

Dynamic analysis is an important technique used in malware analysis and is complementary to static analysis. Thus far, virtualization has been widely adopted for building fine-grained dynamic analysis tools and this trend is expected to continue. Unlike User/Kernel space malware analysis platforms that essentially co-exist with malware, virtualization based platforms benefit from isolation and fine-grained instrumentation support. Isolation makes it more difficult for malware samples to disrupt analysis and fine-grained instrumentation provides analysts with low level details, such as those at the machine instruction level. This in turn supports the development of advanced analysis tools such as dynamic taint …

Distortion Tolerant Source Code Using Viterbi Algorithm, Christopher Hankins May 2013

Distortion Tolerant Source Code Using Viterbi Algorithm, Christopher Hankins

Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Convolutional codes are used in digital communication systems in order to protect information from distortion and increase system reliability. One of the most efficient methods for decoding convolutional codes is based on the Viterbi Algorithm. Considering the fundamental similarities between these channel codes and source codes, it is logical to postulate that the Viterbi Algorithm may also provide a basis for the implementation of an efficient lossy source code. In this thesis, the Viterbi Algorithm is used to used to compress digital data from a symmetric Bernoulli source. The Viterbi source code is simulated and shown to produce results which …

Using Symmetries (Beyond Geometric Symmetries) In Chemical Computations: Computing Parameters Of Multiple Binding Sites, Andres Ortiz, Vladik Kreinovich May 2013

Using Symmetries (Beyond Geometric Symmetries) In Chemical Computations: Computing Parameters Of Multiple Binding Sites, Andres Ortiz, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

We show how group-theoretic ideas can be naturally used to generate efficient algorithms for scientific computations. The general group-theoretic approach is illustrated on the example of determining, from the experimental data, the dissociation constants related to multiple binding sites. We also explain how the general group-theoretic approach is related to the standard (backpropagation) neural networks; this relation justifies the potential universal applicability of the group-theoretic approach.

Cjc: An Extensible Checker For The Cleanjava Annotation Language, Cesar Yeep May 2013

Cjc: An Extensible Checker For The Cleanjava Annotation Language, Cesar Yeep

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

CleanJava is a formal annotation language for the Java programming language to support a Cleanroom-style functional program verification technique that views programs as mathematical functions. It needs a suite of support tools including a checker that can parse annotations and check them for syntactic and static semantic correctness. The two key requirements of the checker are flexibility and extensibility. Since the language is still under development and refinement, it should be flexible to facilitate language experimentation and accommodate language changes. It should be also extensible to provide base code for developing more advanced support tools like an automated theorem prover. …

Towards A Physically Meaningful Definition Of Computable Discontinuous And Multi-Valued Functions (Constraints), Martine Ceberio, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich May 2013

Towards A Physically Meaningful Definition Of Computable Discontinuous And Multi-Valued Functions (Constraints), Martine Ceberio, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In computable mathematics, there are known definitions of computable numbers, computable metric spaces, computable compact sets, and computable functions. A traditional definition of a computable function, however, covers only continuous functions. In many applications (e.g., in phase transitions), physical phenomena are described by discontinuous or multi-valued functions (a.k.a. constraints). In this paper, we provide a physics-motivated definition of computable discontinuous and multi-valued functions, and we analyze properties of this definition.

Ekho: A Tool For Recording And Emulating Energy Harvesting Conditions, Ryan H. Archer May 2013

Ekho: A Tool For Recording And Emulating Energy Harvesting Conditions, Ryan H. Archer

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

Harvested energy makes it possible to deploy sensing devices long-term with minimal required upkeep. However, as devices shrink, unpredictable power supplies make it difficult for system designers to anticipate the behavior of these devices. Ekho is tool that records and emulates energy harvesting conditions in order to enable accurate and repeatable testing of these sensing devices. Ekho uses the concept of I-V curves — curves that describe harvesting current in relation to supply voltage — in order to accurately represent harvesting conditions in a form that is independent of the sensing platform and the type of energy that is being …

Specifically, the mobile app I designed for the iPhone and Android operating systems focuses on teaching players SAT I math concepts using Nintendo’s …

Polynomial And Query Complexity Of Minterm-Cyclic Functions, Matthew J. Harding May 2013

Polynomial And Query Complexity Of Minterm-Cyclic Functions, Matthew J. Harding

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

Boolean functions are at the heart of all computations, and all Boolean functions can be reduced to a sum of pattern-matching functions, called minterm-cyclic functions. In this thesis, we examine properties of polynomials representing minterm-cyclic Boolean functions. We use the term "saturated" to represent a polynomial with degree equal to input size n for all n; this indicates the intuitive notion that such functions are in some way complex, or difficult to compute. We present three main results. Firstly, there exist an infinite number of monotone minterm-cyclic functions that are not saturated. Secondly, for a specific class of minterms called …

Hybrid Methods For Feature Selection, Iunniang Cheng May 2013

Hybrid Methods For Feature Selection, Iunniang Cheng

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Feature selection is one of the important data preprocessing steps in data mining. The feature selection problem involves finding a feature subset such that a classification model built only with this subset would have better predictive accuracy than model built with a complete set of features. In this study, we propose two hybrid methods for feature selection. The best features are selected through either the hybrid methods or existing feature selection methods. Next, the reduced dataset is used to build classification models using five classifiers. The classification accuracy was evaluated in terms of the area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic …

An Exploratory System For Collaborative Decision-Making In Community Planning, Aaron Dale Wells May 2013

An Exploratory System For Collaborative Decision-Making In Community Planning, Aaron Dale Wells

Computer Science Graduate Projects and Theses

Community planning problems differ from those of science, technology, and mathematics as they are not solvable with logical-empiricism. Their solutions are influenced by technology, politics, style, economics, as well as the personalities and experience of those individuals collaborating on the solution. Obtaining cooperation of the stakeholders to implement community planning solutions can be cumbersome or simply cause failure in the implementation of plans. Yet, if the stakeholders had a real handle on the cost and benefits the literature suggests that cooperation can evolve.

In this project, we explore building a reliable cost and benefit model for a set of input …

Algorithms And A Software Application For The Discovery Of Heparin-Binding Proteins For Chemical Analysis, Christopher Dempewolf May 2013

Algorithms And A Software Application For The Discovery Of Heparin-Binding Proteins For Chemical Analysis, Christopher Dempewolf

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Heparin is a biological molecule that plays a vital role in anticoagulation. As such, it is used for the prevention of blood clotting in a variety of medical disorders. However, it is easily contaminated with foreign substances, and this can prove fatal for a person receiving heparin. In order to prevent this, proteins that easily bind to heparin need to be added to the solution. Then, the unwanted substances can easily be filtered out. Certain sequences or patterns of amino acids are known to have a high probability of binding to heparin. Thus, proteins that contain large numbers of these …

A Hybrid Recommendation System Based On Association Rules, Ahmed Alsalama May 2013

A Hybrid Recommendation System Based On Association Rules, Ahmed Alsalama

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Recommendation systems are widely used in e-commerce applications. The
engine of a current recommendation system recommends items to a particular user based on user preferences and previous high ratings. Various recommendation schemes such as collaborative filtering and content-based approaches are used to build a recommendation system. Most of current recommendation systems were developed to fit a certain domain such as books, articles, and movies. We propose a hybrid framework recommendation system to be applied on two dimensional spaces (User × Item) with a large number of users and a small number of items. Moreover, our proposed framework makes use of …

Efficient Architectures For Retrieving Mixed Data With Rest Architecture Style And Html5 Support, Koushik Maddipudi

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Software as a service is an emerging but important aspect of the web. Web
Services play a vital role in providing it. Web Services are commonly provided in one of two architectural styles: a "REpresentational State Transfer" (REST), or using the "Simple Object Access Protocol" (SOAP.) Originally most web content was text and small images. But more recent services involve complex data structures including text, images, audio, and video. The task of optimizing data to provide delivery of these structures is a complex one, involving both theoretical and practical aspects. In this thesis work, I have considered two architectures developed …

Automated Check-In And Scheduling System For A Web-Based Testing Application, Ashwin V. Kumar May 2013

Automated Check-In And Scheduling System For A Web-Based Testing Application, Ashwin V. Kumar

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Ideally, a testing center and associated software should be an effective tool for learning assessment. It should serve as a link between faculty members who create tests and their students who are assessed by those tests. Testing centers are generally limited in the number of computer systems available as compared to the number of students taking tests. Automated testing plays an important role in such situations. Automated testing outside the classroom offers students the flexibility of choosing a preferred time for taking tests. A completely automated system also contributes in reducing a portion of the workload by automatically grading some …

An Ontology Design Pattern For Cartographic Map Scaling, David Carral, Simon Scheider, Krzysztof Janowicz, Charles Vardeman Ii, Adila A. Krisnadhi, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

The concepts of scale is at the core of cartographic abstraction and mapping. It defines which geographic phenomena should be displayed, which type of geometry and map symbol to use, which measures can be taken, as well as the degree to which features need to be exaggerated or spatially displaced. In this work, we present an ontology design pattern for map scaling using the Web Ontology Language (OWL) within a particular extension of the OWL RL profile. We explain how it can be used to describe scaling applications, to reason over scale levels, and geometric representations. We propose an axiomatization …

3-Way Test Suite Prioritization And Fault Detection: A Case Study, Arjun Roy Chaudhuri May 2013

3-Way Test Suite Prioritization And Fault Detection: A Case Study, Arjun Roy Chaudhuri

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

GUI and web based applications are becoming universal. Functional accuracy of those applications is vital. Software defects caused by poor software testing can cost billions of dollars. Further, web application defects can be costly due to the fact that most web applications handle regular user interaction. By improving the time efficiency of software testing, many of the costs associated with defects can be saved. Web application users generate large numbers of possible test-cases and out of all those test-cases only some of them are vital for functional testing. Therefore testing correctness of these applications is expensive and time consuming and …

A Duration-Of-Stay Storage Policy In The Physical Internet, Robert Curry May 2013

A Duration-Of-Stay Storage Policy In The Physical Internet, Robert Curry

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

This article investigates and analyzes the implementation and effectiveness of a Duration-of-Stay torage policy in the Physical Internet. Rather than being stored according to SKU-based information, containers in the Physical Internet are able to gain efficiency through storage according to their length of stay in the warehouse. Data and observations come from different given levels of expected throughput, variance in throughput, and number of storage locations within a unit-load warehouse. The level of efficiency within the system proves to be directly dependent on these different inputs. Whereas an increase in the expected throughput will yield an increase in the overall …

An Automatic Framework For Embryonic Localization Using Edges In A Scale Space, Zachary Bessinger May 2013

An Automatic Framework For Embryonic Localization Using Edges In A Scale Space, Zachary Bessinger

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Localization of Drosophila embryos in images is a fundamental step in an automatic computational system for the exploration of gene-gene interaction on Drosophila. Contour extraction of embryonic images is challenging due to many variations in embryonic images. In the thesis work, we develop a localization framework based on the analysis of connected components of edge pixels in a scale space. We propose criteria to select optimal scales for embryonic localization. Furthermore, we propose a scale mapping strategy to compress the range of a scale space in order to improve the efficiency of the localization framework. The effectiveness of the proposed …

Energy-Neutral Scheduling And Forwarding In Environmentally-Powered Wireless Sensor Networks, Alvin Cerdena Valera, Weng Seng Soh, Hwee-Pink Tan May 2013

Energy-Neutral Scheduling And Forwarding In Environmentally-Powered Wireless Sensor Networks, Alvin Cerdena Valera, Weng Seng Soh, Hwee-Pink Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In environmentally-powered wireless sensor networks (EPWSNs), low latency wakeup scheduling and packet forwarding is challenging due to dynamic duty cycling, posing time-varying sleep latencies and necessitating the use of dynamic wakeup schedules. We show that the variance of the intervals between receiving wakeup slots affects the expected sleep latency: when the variance of the intervals is low (high), the expected latency is low (high). We therefore propose a novel scheduling scheme that uses the bit-reversal permutation sequence (BRPS) – a finite integer sequence that positions receiving wakeup slots as evenly as possible to reduce the expected sleep latency. At the …

Detecting Student Dropouts Using Fuzzy Inferencing, Shahriar Husainy May 2013

Detecting Student Dropouts Using Fuzzy Inferencing, Shahriar Husainy

Theses and Dissertations

Fuzzy logic provides a methodology for reasoning using imprecise rules and assertions. Fuzzy inference is the process of formulating the mapping from a given input to an output using fuzzy logic. The mapping then provides a basis from which decisions can be made, or patterns discerned. This study concerns the development of a Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) for identifying likely student dropouts at Columbus State University (CSU). The fuzzy inference based model uses a hybrid knowledge extraction process to predict how likely each freshman student will be to drop their program of study at the end of their first semester. …
