Active Learning With Expert Advice, Peilin Zhao, Steven C. H. Hoi, Jinfeng Zhuang Jul 2013

Active Learning With Expert Advice, Peilin Zhao, Steven C. H. Hoi, Jinfeng Zhuang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Conventional learning with expert advice methods assumes a learner is always receiving the outcome (e.g., class labels) of every incoming training instance at the end of each trial. In real applications, acquiring the outcome from oracle can be costly or time consuming. In this paper, we address a new problem of active learning with expert advice, where the outcome of an instance is disclosed only when it is requested by the online learner. Our goal is to learn an accurate prediction model by asking the oracle the number of questions as small as possible. To address this challenge, we propose …

Protein Loop Length Estimation From Medium Resolution Cryoem Images, Andrew R. Mcknight Jul 2013

Protein Loop Length Estimation From Medium Resolution Cryoem Images, Andrew R. Mcknight

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

In the post-genomic era, proteomics research presents a new frontier in life science. Proteins play roles in virtually every biological process, and understanding their atomic structures is the key to unraveling how they carry out their work. Compared to the over half million protein sequences in UniProt, only around 25,000 unique sequences have been atomically modeled and deposited to PDB (Protein Databank). Cryoelectron Microscopy (cryoEM) is an important biophysical technique that produces 3D subnanometer resolution images of molecules not amenable to past approaches like x-ray crystallography or nuclear magnetic resonance. De novo modeling is becoming a promising approach to derive …

Reviving Dormant Ties In An Online Social Network Experiment, Ee Peng Lim, Denzil Correa, David Lo, Michael Finegold, Feida Zhu Jul 2013

Reviving Dormant Ties In An Online Social Network Experiment, Ee Peng Lim, Denzil Correa, David Lo, Michael Finegold, Feida Zhu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Social network users connect and interact with one another to fulfil different kinds of social and information needs. When interaction ceases between two users, we say that their tie becomes dormant. While there are different underlying reasons of dormant ties, it is important to find means to revive such ties so as to maintain vibrancy in the relationships. In this work, we thus focus on designing an online experiment to evaluate the effectiveness of personalized social messages to revive dormant ties. The experiment carefully selects users with dormant ties so that no user gets mixed treatments and be affected by …

The Case For Mobile Forensics Of Private Data Leaks: Towards Large-Scale User-Oriented Privacy Protection, Joseph Joo Keng Chan, Kiat Wee Tan, Lingxiao Jiang, Rajesh Krishna Balan Jul 2013

The Case For Mobile Forensics Of Private Data Leaks: Towards Large-Scale User-Oriented Privacy Protection, Joseph Joo Keng Chan, Kiat Wee Tan, Lingxiao Jiang, Rajesh Krishna Balan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Privacy protection against mobile applications on mobile devices is becoming a serious concern as user sensitive data may be leaked without proper justification. Most current leak detection tools only report leaked private data, but provide inadequate information about the causes of the leaks for end users to take preventive measures. Hence, users often cannot reconcile the way they have used an application to a reported leak — i.e., they are unable to comprehend the (il)legitimacy of the leak or make a decision on whether to allow the leak. This paper aims to demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of identifying the …

Platform Regulation On Seller Heterogeneity, Ruhai Wu, Mei Lin Jul 2013

Platform Regulation On Seller Heterogeneity, Ruhai Wu, Mei Lin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

On a "marketplace" platform, where two sides of users trade, the platform owner has an incentive to regulate its marketplace for a higher profit. This study focuses on a monopoly platform's nonpricing, regulatory strategies in governing quality heterogeneity of competing sellers. In contrast to related studies, we endogenize strategic interactions among platform users. Our model extends the circular city model to capture seller heterogeneity in both variety and quality. The closed-form equilibrium solution reveals a ripple effect that exerts competitive pressure from seller to seller at a diminishing magnitude. The equilibrium analysis enables us to connect the economic mechanisms in …

An Empirical Study Of Bugs In Software Build Systems, Xin Xia, Xiaozhen Zhou, David Lo, Xiaoqiong Zhao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Build system converts source code, libraries and other data into executable programs by orchestrating the execution of compilers and other tools. The whole building process is managed by a software build system, such as Make, Ant, CMake, Maven, Scons, and QMake. The reliability of software build systems would affect the reliability of the build process. In this paper, we perform an empirical study on bugs in software build systems. We analyze four software build systems, Ant, Maven, CMake and QMake, which are four typical and widely-used software build systems, and can be used to build Java, C, C++ systems. We …

Collective Diffusion Over Networks: Models And Inference, Akshat Kumar, Daniel Sheldon, Biplav Srivastava Jul 2013

Collective Diffusion Over Networks: Models And Inference, Akshat Kumar, Daniel Sheldon, Biplav Srivastava

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Diffusion processes in networks are increasingly used to model the spread of information and social influence. In several applications in computational sustainability such as the spread of wildlife, infectious diseases and traffic mobility pattern, the observed data often consists of only aggregate information. In this work, we present new models that generalize standard diffusion processes to such collective settings. We also present optimization based techniques that can accurately learn the underlying dynamics of the given contagion process, including the hidden network structure, by only observing the time a node becomes active and the associated aggregate information. Empirically, our technique is …

Psyhcos: Parameter Synthesis For Hierarchical Concurrent Real-Time Systems, Étienne André, Yang Liu, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong, Shang-Wei Lin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Real-time systems are often hard to control, due to their complicated structures, quantitative time factors and even unknown delays. We present here PSyHCoS, a tool for analyzing parametric real-time systems specified using the hierarchical modeling language PSTCSP. PSyHCoS supports several algorithms for parameter synthesis and model checking, as well as state space reduction techniques. Its architecture favors reusability in terms of syntax, semantics, and algorithms. It comes with a friendly user interface that can be used to edit, simulate and verify PSTCSP models. Experiments show its efficiency and applicability

Real-Life Vehicle Routing With Non-Standard Constraints, Wee Leong Lee Jul 2013

Real-Life Vehicle Routing With Non-Standard Constraints, Wee Leong Lee

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Real-life vehicle routing problems comprise of a number of complexities that are not considered by the classical models found in vehicle routing literature. I present, in this paper, a two-stage sweep-based heuristic to find good solutions to a real-life Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP). The problem I shall consider, will deal with some non-standard constraints beyond those normally associated with the classical VRP. Other than considering the capacity constraints for vehicles and the time windows for deliveries, I shall introduce four additional non-standard constraints: merging of customer orders, controlling the maximum number of drop points, matching orders to vehicle types, and …

Http Mailbox - Asynchronous Restful Communication, Sawood Alam Jul 2013

Http Mailbox - Asynchronous Restful Communication, Sawood Alam

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Traditionally, general web services used only the GET and POST methods of HTTP while several other HTTP methods like PUT, PATCH, and DELETE were rarely utilized. Additionally, the Web was mainly navigated by humans using web browsers and clicking on hyperlinks or submitting HTML forms. Clicking on a link is always a GET request while HTML forms only allow GET and POST methods. Recently, several web frameworks/libraries have started supporting RESTful web services through APIs. To support HTTP methods other than GET and POST in browsers, these frameworks have used hidden HTML form fields as a workaround to convey the …

A Multi-Configuration Display Methodology Incorporating Reflection For Real-Time Haptic-Interactive Virtual Environments, Mohammad F. Obeid Jul 2013

A Multi-Configuration Display Methodology Incorporating Reflection For Real-Time Haptic-Interactive Virtual Environments, Mohammad F. Obeid

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

There is a natural need for real-time min-or reflection in many interactive virtual reality applications to achieve visuo-haptic collocation through optical reflection. Its use, however, calls for adjustments to the original model since a mirror reverses image characteristics. This thesis introduces a design and implementation of a generic configuration component for virtual environments that adjusts image characteristics and haptic interfaces to accommodate various display setups while preserving the correct orientation and properties of the original models in the graphical scene. Four different but related approaches were developed for image connection and are compared and contrasted against primary criteria. The haptic …

Multi-Objective Preliminary Design Optimization Of Planing Craft Using Differential Evolution And Artificial Networks, Robert Eugene Weidman

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The differential evolution (DE) algorithm is an evolutionary algorithm that has been utilized as a metaheuristic optimizer in the last few years. A recently developed multi-objective version of DE is utilized in this research in order to optimize the preliminary design of planing craft. The craft performance is evaluated using the planing hull preliminary design software PHAST. The optimization problem objectives are the craft acquisition cost and the overall measure of effectiveness; the latter comprises various performance aspects: ride quality, transportability, payload, and mobility. Static stability and operating constraints are also considered. Each of the aforementioned four measures of effectiveness …

Optimization Of Solar Cell Arrays Using The Fibonacci Search Algorithm, Felicia Tyyan Farrow Jul 2013

Optimization Of Solar Cell Arrays Using The Fibonacci Search Algorithm, Felicia Tyyan Farrow

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In our energy hungry world, there is a growing demand to develop creative mechanisms to extract, conserve, and use energy from different resources. The use of solar cells to extract and convert solar energy into electrical energy is a growing and popular field of study because solar energy is clean, free, and renewable. One limitation for photovoltaic (PU) or solar technology is its loss in efficiency and availability as a result of shading or partial shading. Shading or partial shading decreases the total capable output power that the PV system can produce because the array is receiving irradiation from the …

Motion Artifact Reduction In Impedance Plethysmography Signal, Sardar Ansari Jun 2013

Motion Artifact Reduction In Impedance Plethysmography Signal, Sardar Ansari

Theses and Dissertations

The research related to designing portable monitoring devices for physiological signals has been at its peak in the last decade or two. One of the main obstacles in building such devices is the effect of the subject's movements on the quality of the signal. There have been numerous studies addressing the problem of removing motion artifact from the electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmography (PPG) signals in the past few years. However, no such study exists for the Impedance Plethysmography (IP) signal. The IP signal can be used to monitor respiration in mobile devices. However, it is very susceptible to motion artifact. …

The Significance Of Requirements In Medical Device Software Development, Martin Mchugh, Abder-Rahman Ali, Fergal Mccaffery Jun 2013

The Significance Of Requirements In Medical Device Software Development, Martin Mchugh, Abder-Rahman Ali, Fergal Mccaffery

Conference papers

Software to be used in or as a medical device is subject to user requirements. However, unlike unregulated software, medical device software must meet both the user’s requirements and the requirements of the regulatory body of the region into which the software will be marketed. Regulatory requirements are fixed and can be planned for; unfortunately, the same is not true with user requirements. As many medical device software development organisations are following traditional sequential Software Development Life Cycles (SDLC), they are experiencing difficulties accommodating changes in requirements once development has begun. Agile methods and practices offer the ability to overcome …

Indoor Positioning For Smartphones Using Asynchronous Ultrasound Trilateration, Viacheslav Filonenko, Charlie Cullen, James Carswell Jun 2013

Indoor Positioning For Smartphones Using Asynchronous Ultrasound Trilateration, Viacheslav Filonenko, Charlie Cullen, James Carswell

Articles

Modern smartphones are a great platform for Location Based Services (LBS). While outdoor LBS for smartphones has proven to be very successful, indoor LBS for smartphones has not yet fully developed due to the lack of an accurate positioning technology. In this paper we present an accurate indoor positioning approach for commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) smartphones that uses the innate ability of mobile phones to produce ultrasound, combined with Time-Difference-of-Arrival (TDOA) asynchronous trilateration. We evaluate our indoor positioning approach by describing its strengths and weaknesses, and determine its absolute accuracy. This is accomplished through a range of experiments that involve variables …

Challenges Experienced By Medical Device Software Organisations While Following A Plan-Driven Sdlc, Martin Mchugh, Fergal Mccaffery Jun 2013

Challenges Experienced By Medical Device Software Organisations While Following A Plan-Driven Sdlc, Martin Mchugh, Fergal Mccaffery

Conference papers

Medical device software organisations face challenges not faced by generic software development organisations. These challenges include the adherence to regulatory controls. Regulatory bodies require medical device software organisations to provide objective evidence that the software they are developing is safe and reliable. To produce this, regulatory bodies require a number of deliverables which must be achieved. However, they do not dictate which Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) must be followed in order to achieve these deliverables. Despite not dictating which SDLC must be followed when developing medical device software, organisations typically develop their software in accordance with a Plan-Driven software …

Inverted Sequence Identification In Diploid Genomic Scaffold Assembly Via Weighted Max-Cut Reduction, Paul Mark Bodily Jun 2013

Inverted Sequence Identification In Diploid Genomic Scaffold Assembly Via Weighted Max-Cut Reduction, Paul Mark Bodily

Theses and Dissertations

Virtually all genome assemblers to date are designed for use with data from haploid or homozygous diploid genomes. Their use on heterozygous genomic datasets generally results in highly-fragmented, error-prone assemblies, owing to the violation of assumptions during both the contigging and scaffolding phases. Of the two phases, scaffolding is more particularly impacted and algorithms to facilitate the scaffolding of heterozygous data are lacking. We present a stand-alone scaffolding algorithm, ScaffoldScaffolder, designed specifically for scaffolding diploid genomes. A fundamental step in the scaffolding phase is the assignment of sequence orientations to contigs within scaffolds. Deciding such an assignment in the presence …

Keystroke Timing Analysis Of On-The-Fly Web Apps, Chee Meng Tey, Payas Gupta, Debin Gao, Yan Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The Google Suggestions service used in Google Search is one example of an interactivity rich Javascript application. In this paper, we analyse the timing side channel of Google Suggestions by reverse engineering the communication model from obfuscated Javascript code. We consider an attacker who attempts to infer the typing pattern of a victim. From our experiments involving 11 participants, we found that for each keypair with at least 20 samples, the mean of the inter-keystroke timing can be determined with an error of less than 20%.

Interactive Depth-Aware Effects For Stereo Image Editing, Joshua E. Abbott Jun 2013

Interactive Depth-Aware Effects For Stereo Image Editing, Joshua E. Abbott

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis introduces methods for adding user-guided depth-aware effects to images captured with a consumer-grade stereo camera with minimal user interaction. In particular, we present methods for highlighted depth-of-field, haze, depth-of-field, and image relighting. Unlike many prior methods for adding such effects, we do not assume prior scene models or require extensive user guidance to create such models, nor do we assume multiple input images. We also do not require specialized camera rigs or other equipment such as light-field camera arrays, active lighting, etc. Instead, we use only an easily portable and affordable consumer-grade stereo camera. The depth is calculated …

Patchmatch-Based Content Completion Of 3d Images, Joel Arthur Howard Jun 2013

Patchmatch-Based Content Completion Of 3d Images, Joel Arthur Howard

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a method for completing target regions ("hole filling") in RGB stereo pairs. It builds upon the state of the art for completing single images by matching to and then blending source patches drawn from the rest of the image. A method is introduced for first completing the respective disparity maps using a coupled partial differential equation based on that of Bertalmio, et al. extended to create mutual disparity consistency. Estimated disparities are then used to guide completion of the missing color image texture. An extension to the coherence-based objective function introduced by Wexler, et al. is then …

Robust Digital Video Watermarking Using Reversible Data Hiding And Visual Cryptography, Manoj Kumar, Arnold Hensman Jun 2013

Robust Digital Video Watermarking Using Reversible Data Hiding And Visual Cryptography, Manoj Kumar, Arnold Hensman

Conference Papers

Watermarking is a major image processing application used to authenticate user documents by embedding and hiding some authenticated piece of information behind an image, audio or the video file. For example, copyright symbols or signatures are often used. Our proposed work is to develop and implement an improved layered approach to video watermarking. The traditional watermarking approach tends to embed an entire watermark image within each video frame or within random video frames to give the appearance of a hidden watermark to the casual observer. This work proposes a more efficient and secure approach to perform watermarking, by using sub …

Computational Techniques For Public Health Surveillance, Scott H. Burton

Theses and Dissertations

Public health surveillance is a critical part of understanding, and ultimately influencing, health behaviors. Traditional methods, such as questionnaires and focus groups have significant limitations including cost, delay, and size. Online social media data has the potential to overcome many of the challenges of traditional methods, but its exploitation is not trivial. We develop and apply computational techniques to enable public health surveillance in novel ways and on a larger scale than currently performed. In this regard, we present techniques for mining the who, what, and where of public health surveillance in social media. We show how computational methods can identify …
