Linear Programming Algorithm With Mixed Real-Integer Variables In Matlab Environments, Gelareh Bakhtyar
Linear Programming Algorithm With Mixed Real-Integer Variables In Matlab Environments, Gelareh Bakhtyar
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Efficient numerical procedures for solving general Linear Programming (LP) problems with mixed real-integer variables are developed in this work. The proposed algorithms employ the revised dual simplex with Branch and Bound (B&B) algorithms, with special procedures for limited search of subsequent branches. Computational time can be significantly reduced by incorporating the updated inverse formulas into the developed procedures. Both generic LP problems and deterministic pavement maintenance and rehabilitation (M&R) problems are used in this study to vaiidate the developed procedures. Medium to large-scale examples ( 11 pavement M&R) presented in this work have demonstrated that the developed numerical procedures consistently …

We compare two distinct approaches for querying data in the context of the life sciences. The first approach utilizes conventional databases to store the data and provides intuitive form-based interfaces to facilitate querying of the data, commonly used by the life science researchers that we study. The second approach utilizes a large OWL ontology and the same datasets associated as RDF instances of the ontology. Both approaches are being used in parallel by a team of cell biologists in their daily research activities, with the objective of gradually replacing the conventional approach with the knowledge-driven one. We describe several benefits …

The Impact Of Technical Innovation On Voter Registration And Turnout, Chere' Evans
The Impact Of Technical Innovation On Voter Registration And Turnout, Chere' Evans
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
Research on provisional ballots is nearly nonexistent and research on military and overseas civilian absentee ballots is limited. While the percentages of those voters are small, they are still substantial enough to swing close elections, so ensuring that every eligible voter has his or her vote counted is essential and research is needed in order to identify ways to improve processes for these voters.
By the 2012 Presidential General election, the Maryland State Board of Elections (SBE) had implemented Online Voter Registration (OLVR), Electronic (or paperless) Motor Voter (EMV), and Online Absentee Request (OAR). Maryland also did a redesign of …

The prevalence of tobacco dependence in the United States (US) remains alarming. Invariably, smoke-related health problems are the leading preventable causes of death in the US. Research has shown that a culturally tailored cessation counseling program can help reduce smoking and other tobacco usage. In this paper, we present a mobile health (mHealth) solution that leverages the Short Message Service (SMS) or text messaging feature of mobile devices to motivate behavior change among tobacco users. Our approach implements the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and a phase-based framework. We make contributions to improving previous mHealth intervention approaches by delivering personalized …

Improving Tool Support For Software Reverse Engineering In A Security Context, Brendan Cleary, Christoph Treude, Fernando Figueira Filho, Margaret-Anne Storey, Martin Salois
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Illegal cyberspace activities are increasing rapidly and many software engineers are using reverse engineering methods to respond to attacks. The security-sensitive nature of these tasks, such as the understanding of malware or the decryption of encrypted content, brings unique challenges to reverse engineering: work has to be done offline, files can rarely be shared, time pressure is immense, and there is a lack of tool and process support for capturing and sharing the knowledge obtained while trying to understand assembly code. To help us gain an understanding of this reverse engineering work, we conducted an exploratory study at a government …
Fixed Final Time Optimal Adaptive Control Of Linear Discrete-Time Systems In Input-Output Form, Qiming Zhao, Hao Xu, S. Jagannathan
Fixed Final Time Optimal Adaptive Control Of Linear Discrete-Time Systems In Input-Output Form, Qiming Zhao, Hao Xu, S. Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, the fixed final time adaptive optimal regulation of discrete-time linear systems with unknown system dynamics is addressed. First, by transforming the linear systems into the input/output form, the adaptive optimal control design depends only on the measured outputs and past inputs instead of state measurements. Next, due to the time-varying nature of finite-horizon, a novel online adaptive estimator is proposed by utilizing an online approximator to relax the requirement on the system dynamics. An additional error term corresponding to the terminal constraint is defined and minimized overtime. No policy/value iteration is performed by the novel parameter update …

Software projects produce a wealth of data that is leveraged in different tasks and for different purposes: researchers collect project data for building experimental datasets; software programmers reuse code from projects; developers often explore the opportunities for getting involved in the development of a project to gain or offer expertise. Finding relevant projects that suit one needs is however currently challenging with the capabilities of existing search systems. We propose Orion, an integrated search engine architecture that combines information from different types of software repositories from multiple sources to facilitate the construction and execution of advanced search queries. Orion provides …

Programming languages have been proposed even before the era of the modern computer. As years have gone, computer resources have increased and application domains have expanded, leading to the proliferation of hundreds of programming languages, each attempting to improve over others or to address new programming paradigms. These languages range from procedural languages like C, object oriented languages like Java, and functional languages such as ML and Haskell. Unfortunately, there is a lack of large scale and comprehensive studies that examine the “popularity”, “interoperability”, and “impact” of various programming languages. To fill this gap, this study investigates a hundred thousands …

Mkboost: A Framework Of Multiple Kernel Boosting, Hao Xia, Steven C. H. Hoi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Multiple kernel learning (MKL) is a promising family of machine learning algorithms using multiple kernel functions for various challenging data mining tasks. Conventional MKL methods often formulate the problem as an optimization task of learning the optimal combinations of both kernels and classifiers, which usually results in some forms of challenging optimization tasks that are often difficult to be solved. Different from the existing MKL methods, in this paper, we investigate a boosting framework of MKL for classification tasks, i.e., we adopt boosting to solve a variant of MKL problem, which avoids solving the complicated optimization tasks. Specifically, we present …

Video Concept Detection By Learning From Web Images: A Case Study On Cross Domain Learning, Shiai Zhu, Ting Yao, Chong-Wah Ngo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Concept detection is probably the most important research problem in the area of multimedia. The need to model with sufficient and diverse training instances, however, makes the task computationally and resourcefully expensive. Meanwhile, the popularity of social media has generated massive amount of weakly tagged images which could be leveraged for concept model learning. Therefore, in this paper, we consider exploring weakly taggedWeb images to shed some light on video concept detection. Particularly, two sets of Web images downloaded from Flickr are utilized as training data for concept detection on two real-world large-scale video datasets released by TRECVID. Our experiments …

Unified Modeling Language (UML) is adopted by the Object Management Group as a standardized general-purpose modeling language for object-oriented software engineering. Despite its status as a standard, UML is still in a development stage and many studies have highlighted its weaknesses and challenges - including those related to human factor issues. Further, UML has grown considerably more complex since its inception. This paper traces the history of Unified Modeling Language (UML) from its formation to its current state and discusses the current state of the UML language. The paper first introduces UML and its various diagrams, and discusses its characteristics …

Shortlisting Top-K Assignments, Yimin Lin, Kyriakos Mouratidis
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper we identify a novel query type, the top-K assignment query (αTop-K). Consider a set of objects and a set of suppliers, where each object must be assigned to one supplier. Assume that there is a cost associated with every object-supplier pair. If we allocate each object to the server with the smallest cost (for the specific object), the derived overall assignment will have the minimum total cost. In many scenarios, however, runner-up assignments may be required too, like for example when a decision maker needs to make additional considerations, not captured by individual object-supplier costs. In this …
The Evolution Of Modular Product Architectures And The Emergence Of Platform Ecosystems, C. Jason Woodard, Eric K. Clemons
The Evolution Of Modular Product Architectures And The Emergence Of Platform Ecosystems, C. Jason Woodard, Eric K. Clemons
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
While a large body of research has examined the advantages and disadvantages of modularity in product design, studies of modularization have tended to focus on settings in which a product’s architecture is determined by a single designer or designers within a single organization. In this paper, we ask whether modularity can arise in a decentralized setting where high-value designs are rewarded but designers’ ability to coordinate with each other and anticipate the consequences of their actions is limited—in short, whether modularity can evolve. To answer this question, we developed an agent-based model in which boundedly rational firms combine components into …

This paper presents transformative energy-saving schedule-leveraging agent (TESLA), an agent for optimizing energy usage in commercial buildings. TESLA’s key insight is that adding flexibility to event/meeting schedules can lead to significant energy savings. This paper provides four key contributions: (i) online scheduling algorithms, which are at the heart of TESLA, to solve a stochastic mixed integer linear program for energy-efficient scheduling of incrementally/dynamically arriving meetings and events; (ii) an algorithm to effectively identify key meetings that lead to significant energy savings by adjusting their flexibility; (iii) an extensive analysis on energy savings achieved by TESLA; and (iv) surveys of real …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Surveillance codestreams coded by H.264/SVC (scalable video coding), which consists of one base layer and one or more enhancement layers, supply flexible and various quality, resolution, and temporal (sub)codestreams such that clients with different network bandwidth and terminal devices can seamlessly access them. In this paper, we present a robust authentication scheme for them in order to insure the integrity of SVC surveillance codestreams, named AUSSC (Authenticating SVC Surveillance Codestreams). AUSSC exploits cryptographic-based authentication for base layer and content-based authentication for enhancement layers. For content-based authentication, AUSSC extracts full features from the first frame of each GOP (group of picture) …

In software engineering, testing is a crucial activity that is designed to ensure the quality of program code. For this activity, software teams spend substantial resources constructing test cases to thoroughly assess the correctness of software functionality. What is the proportion of open source projects that include test cases? What is the effect of number of developers on the number of test cases? In this study, we explore open source projects and investigate the correlation between the presence of test cases and various project development characteristics, including the number of lines of code, the size of development teams and the …

Combining Model Checking And Testing With An Application To Reliability Prediction And Distribution, Lin Gui, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Yuanjie Si, Jin Song Dong, Xinyu Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Testing provides a probabilistic assurance of system correctness. In general, testing relies on the assumptions that the system under test is deterministic so that test cases can be sampled. However, a challenge arises when a system under test behaves non-deterministiclly in a dynamic operating environment because it will be unknown how to sample test cases. In this work, we propose a method combining hypothesis testing and probabilistic model checking so as to provide the ``assurance" and quantify the error bounds. The idea is to apply hypothesis testing to deterministic system components and use probabilistic model checking techniques to lift the results …

Energy Awareness And Scheduling In Mobile Devices And High End Computing, Sachin S. Pawaskaw
Student Work
In the context of the big picture as energy demands rise due to growing economies and growing populations, there will be greater emphasis on sustainable supply, conservation, and efficient usage of this vital resource. Even at a smaller level, the need for minimizing energy consumption continues to be compelling in embedded, mobile, and server systems such as handheld devices, robots, spaceships, laptops, cluster servers, sensors, etc. This is due to the direct impact of constrained energy sources such as battery size and weight, as well as cooling expenses in cluster-based systems to reduce heat dissipation. Energy management therefore plays a …

Evaluation Of The Impacts Computer Science Presentations, Steven Mcgee, Ronald I. Greenberg, Dale F. Reed, Jennifer Duck
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Recent computer science enrollments have shown positive trends. However, these trends are not evenly distributed by gender and race. Efforts to recruit underrepresented students should focus on providing information that demystifies the field of computer science. This paper reports on such an effort to inform underrepresented high school students about the field and its diversity. The results suggest that increasing awareness in an enjoyable format can increase student interest in pursuing computer science. These results can provide guidance about ways to encourage students to take high school computer science classes as motivation and preparation for college-level computer science.
