Picture Fuzzy Sets - A New Concept For Computational Intelligence Problems, Bui Cong Cuong, Vladik Kreinovich
Picture Fuzzy Sets - A New Concept For Computational Intelligence Problems, Bui Cong Cuong, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Since Zadeh introduced fuzzy sets in 1965, a lot of new theories treating imprecision and uncertainty have been introduced. Some of these theories are extensions of fuzzy set theory, other try to handle imprecision and uncertainty in different way. In this paper, we introduce a new notion of picture fuzzy sets (PFS), which are directly extensions of fuzzy sets and of intuitonistic fuzzy sets (Atanassov). Then some operations on picture fuzzy sets are defined and some properties of these operations are considered. Here the basic preliminaries of PFS theory are presented.

Studying Volatility And Dependency Of Chinese Outbound Tourism Demand In Singapore, Malaysia, And Thailand: A Vine Copula Approach, Jianxu Liu, Songsak Sriboonchitta, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
This paper investigates the volatility and dependence of Chinese tourism demand for Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand (SMT) destinations, using the vine copula based auto regression moving average-generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (ARMA-GARCH) model. It is found that a jolt to the tourist flow can have long-standing ramifications for the SMT countries. The estimation of the vine copulas among SMT show that the Survival Gumbel, Frank, and Gaussian copulas are the best copulas for Canonical vine (C-vine) or Drawable vine (D-vine) among the possible pair-copulas. In addition, this paper illustrates the making of time-varying Frank copulas for vine copulas. Finally, there is …

From Urysohn's Universal Metric Space To A Universal Space-Time, A. G. Aksoy, Z. Glassman, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
A known Urysohn's result shows that there exists a universal} metric space, i.e., a metric space into every other (separable) metric space can be isomorphically embedded. Moreover, this universal metric space can be selected to be ultra-homogeneous -- every isomorphism of its two finite subsets can be extended to the isomorphism of the whole space.
Starting with Einstein's theories of Special and General relativity, space-times are described by a different type of structure -- a set (of events) equipped with the proper time t(a,b) between points a and b; such spaces are known as space-times with kinematic metric, or k-space-times. …
Algebraic Product Is The Only T-Norm For Which Optimization Under Fuzzy Constraints Is Scale-Invariant, Juan Carlos Figueroa Garcia, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich
Algebraic Product Is The Only T-Norm For Which Optimization Under Fuzzy Constraints Is Scale-Invariant, Juan Carlos Figueroa Garcia, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many practical situations, we need to optimize under fuzzy constraints. There is a known Bellman-Zadeh approach for solving such problems, but the resulting solution, in general, depends on the choice of a not well-defined constant M. We show that this dependence disappears if we use an algebraic t-norm (and-operation) a * b, and we also prove that the algebraic product is the only t-norm for which the corresponding solution is independent on M.

A Linked-Data-Driven And Semantically-Enabled Journal Portal For Scientometrics, Yingjie Hu, Krzysztof Janowicz, Grant Mckenzie, Kunal Sengupta
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
The Semantic Web journal by IOS Press follows a unique open and transparent process during which each submitted manuscript is available online together with the full history of its successive decision statuses, assigned editors, solicited and voluntary reviewers, their full text reviews, and in many cases also the authors’ response letters. Combined with a highly-customized, Drupal-based journal management system, this provides the journal with semantically rich manuscript time lines and networked data about authors, reviewers, and editors. These data are now exposed using a SPARQL endpoint, an extended Bibo ontology, and a modular Linked Data portal that provides interactive scientometrics …
String Similarity Metrics For Ontology Alignment, Michelle Cheatham, Pascal Hitzler
String Similarity Metrics For Ontology Alignment, Michelle Cheatham, Pascal Hitzler
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
Ontology alignment is an important part of enabling the semantic web to reach its full potential. The vast majority of ontology alignment systems use one or more string similarity metrics, but often the choice of which metrics to use is not given much attention. In this work we evaluate a wide range of such metrics, along with string pre-processing strategies such as removing stop words and considering synonyms, on different types of ontologies. We also present a set of guidelines on when to use which metric. We furthermore show that if optimal string similarity metrics are chosen, those alone can …
Dependence-Based Source Level Tracing And Replay For Networked Embedded Systems, Man Wang
Dependence-Based Source Level Tracing And Replay For Networked Embedded Systems, Man Wang
Open Access Dissertations
Error detection and diagnosis for networked embedded systems remain challenging and tedious due to issues such as a large number of computing entities, hardware resource constraints, and non-deterministic behaviors. The run-time checking is often necessitated by the fact that the static verification fails whenever there exist conditions unknown prior to execution. Complexities in hardware, software and even the operating environments can also defeat the static analysis and simulations. Record-and-replay has long been proposed for distributed systems error diagnosis. Under this method, assertions are inserted in the target program for run-time error detection. At run-time, the violation of any asserted property …
Reasoning Across Language And Vision In Machines And Humans, Andrei Barbu
Reasoning Across Language And Vision In Machines And Humans, Andrei Barbu
Open Access Dissertations
Humans not only outperform AI and computer-vision systems, but use an unknown computational mechanism to perform tasks for which no suitable approaches exist. I present work investigating both novel tasks and how humans approach them in the context of computer vision and linguistics. I demonstrate a system which, like children, acquires high-level linguistic knowledge about the world. Robots learn to play physically-instantiated board games and use that knowledge to engage in physical play. To further integrate language and vision I develop an approach which produces rich sentential descriptions of events depicted in videos. I then show how to simultaneously detect …

A Vine Copula Approach For Analyzing Financial Risk And Co-Movement Of The Indonesian, Philippine And Thailand Stock Markets, Songsak Sriboonchitta, Jianxu Liu, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
This paper aims at analyzing the financial risk and co-movement of stock markets in three countries: Indonesia, Philippine and Thailand. It consists of analyzing the conditional volatility and test the leverage effect in the stock markets of the three countries. To capture the pairwise and conditional dependence between the variables, we use the method of vine copulas. In addition, we illustrate the computations of the value at risk and the expected shortfall using Monte Carlo simulation with copula based GJR-GARCH model. The empirical evidence shows that all the leverage effects add much to the capacity for explanation of the three …
Search Tool That Utilizes Scientific Metadata Matched Against User-Entered Parameters, Veronika Margaret Megler, David Maier
Search Tool That Utilizes Scientific Metadata Matched Against User-Entered Parameters, Veronika Margaret Megler, David Maier
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
A method for providing proximate dataset recommendations can begin with the creation of metadata records corresponding to datasets that represent scientific data by a scientific dataset search tool. The metadata records can conform to a standardized structural definition, and may be hierarchical. Values for the data elements of the metadata records can be contained within the datasets. Metadata records with a value that is proximate to a user-entered search parameter can be identified. A proximity score can be calculated for each identified metadata record. The proximity score can express a relevance of the corresponding dataset to the user-entered search parameters. …

Quality Of Service Control In Wireless Local Area Networks, Adelina Hasanmetaj
Quality Of Service Control In Wireless Local Area Networks, Adelina Hasanmetaj
Theses and Dissertations
Today wireless internet access, especially the IEEE 802.11 family WLANs, has become widely available. Public hotspots emerge everywhere, from hotels to airports. In addition, private usage also grows rapidly due to the offered convenience.
The current WLAN standard 802.11b does not offer service differentiation. Therefore the quality of an offered service is often not guaranteed. However, a new standard 802.11e has been proposed to improve the quality of service provisioning. This new standard introduces different Traffic Classes for different services and can prioritize the traffic accordingly.
This report covers both the 802.11b and the 802.11e WLANs. In the first place …

Control System Of An Atomic Layer Deposition (Ald) Machine, Nitin Vishnu Hegde
Control System Of An Atomic Layer Deposition (Ald) Machine, Nitin Vishnu Hegde
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Atomic Layer Deposition is one of the most efficient deposition processes for obtaining ultrathin films. The deposition by this process happens one atomic layer at a time. ALD is known for its precision and ability to develop quality films with great thickness control. ALD machines simultaneously control DC and AC currents, low pressure operations, temperature control and heating (up to 500'C), precision flow control, precision timing intervals for deposition (milli-second intervals) and constantly monitor temperature. Such a high control comes at a high price. Furthermore, at the university level, the capacity to modify or enhance a machine is critical but …

Static Saliency Vs. Dynamic Saliency: A Comparative Study, Tam Nguyen, Mengdi Xu, Guangyu Gao, Mohan Kankanhalli, Qi Tian, Shuicheng Yan
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Recently visual saliency has attracted wide attention of researchers in the computer vision and multimedia field. However, most of the visual saliency-related research was conducted on still images for studying static saliency. In this paper, we give a comprehensive comparative study for the first time of dynamic saliency (video shots) and static saliency (key frames of the corresponding video shots), and two key observations are obtained: 1) video saliency is often different from, yet quite related with, image saliency, and 2) camera motions, such as tilting, panning or zooming, affect dynamic saliency significantly.
Motivated by these observations, we propose a …

Ironclad C++ A Library-Augmented Type-Safe Subset Of C++, Christian Delozier, Richard A. Eisenberg, Santosh Nagarakatte, Peter-Michael Osera, Milo M.K. Martin, Steve Zdancewic
Computer Science Faculty Research and Scholarship
The C++ programming language remains widely used, de- spite inheriting many unsafe features from C—features that often lead to failures of type or memory safety that manifest as buffer overflows, use-after-free vulnerabilities, or abstrac- tion violations. Malicious attackers can exploit such viola- tions to compromise application and system security.
This paper introduces Ironclad C++, an approach to bringing the benefits of type and memory safety to C++. Ironclad C++ is, in essence, a library-augmented, type-safe subset of C++. All Ironclad C++ programs are valid C++ programs that can be compiled using standard, off-the-shelf C++ compilers. However, not all valid C++ …
