Efficient Lossy Trapdoor Functions Based On Subgroup Membership Assumptions, Haiyang Xue, Bao Li, Xianhui Lu, Dingding Jia, Yamin Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose a generic construction of lossy trapdoor function from the subgroup membership assumption. We present three concrete constructions based on the k-DCR assumption over Z∗ N2 , the extended psubgroup assumption over Z∗ N2 , and the decisional RSA subgroup membership assumption over Z∗ N . Our constructions are more efficient than the previous construction from the DCR assumption over Z∗ Ns (s ≥ 3).

Access Control In And For The Real World, Sara Sinclair Nov 2013

Access Control In And For The Real World, Sara Sinclair

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Access control is a core component of any information-security strategy. Researchers have spent tremendous energy over the past forty years defining abstract access-control models and proving various properties about them. However, surprisingly little attention has been paid to how well these models work in real socio-technical systems (i.e., real human organizations). This dissertation describes the results of two qualitative studies (involving 52 participants from four companies, drawn from the financial, software, and healthcare sectors) and observes that the current practice of access control is dysfunctional at best. It diagnoses the broken assumptions that are at the heart of this dysfunction, …

As Strong As The Weakest Link: Mining Diverse Cliques In Weighted Graphs, Petko Bogdanov, Ben Baumer, Prithwish Basu, Amotz Bar-Noy, Ambuj K. Singh

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

Mining for cliques in networks provides an essential tool for the discovery of strong associations among entities. Applications vary, from extracting core subgroups in team performance data arising in sports, entertainment, research and business; to the discovery of functional complexes in high-throughput gene interaction data. A challenge in all of these scenarios is the large size of real-world networks and the computational complexity associated with clique enumeration. Furthermore, when mining for multiple cliques within the same network, the results need to be diversified in order to extract meaningful information that is both comprehensive and representative of the whole dataset. We …

Thoughts On The Complex Relation Between Linked Data, Semantic Annotations, And Ontologies, Krzysztof Janowicz, Pascal Hitzler Oct 2013

Thoughts On The Complex Relation Between Linked Data, Semantic Annotations, And Ontologies, Krzysztof Janowicz, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

The relation between data, annotations, and schemata seems straightforward at first: Data are annotated with additional meta information according to some schemata in order to expose additional non-intrinsic characteristics relevant to the meaningful interpretation of said data. However, on closer examination, things are not as simple. Focusing on geo-information retrieval, we will try to disentangle the aforementioned relations. We will report from our own experience and from observations gathered by editing papers about ontologies and Linked Data for the Semantic Web journal.

D-Sparq: Distributed, Scalable And Efficient Rdf Query Engine, Raghava Mutharaju, Sherif Sakr, Alessandra Sala, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

We present D-SPARQ, a distributed RDF query engine that combines the MapReduce processing framework with a NoSQL distributed data store, MongoDB. The performance of processing SPARQL queries mainly depends on the efficiency of handling the join operations between the RDF triple patterns. Our system features two unique characteristics that enable efficiently tackling this challenge: 1) Identifying specific patterns of the input queries that enable improving the performance by running different parts of the query in a parallel mode. 2) Using the triple selectivity information for reordering the individual triples of the input query within the identified query patterns. The preliminary …

Editing R2rml Mappings Made Easy, Kunal Sengupta, Peter Haase, Michael Schmidt, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

The new W3C standard R2RML3 defines a language for ex- pressing mappings from relational databases to RDF, allowing applications built on top of the W3C Semantic Technology stack to seamlessly integrate relational data. A major obstacle in using R2RML, though, is the creation and maintenance of mappings. In this demo, we present a novel R2RML mapping editor which provides a user interface to create and edit mappings interactively even for non-experts.

Distel: A Distributed El+ Ontology Classifier, Raghava Mutharaju, Pascal Hitzler, Prabhaker Mateti Oct 2013

Distel: A Distributed El+ Ontology Classifier, Raghava Mutharaju, Pascal Hitzler, Prabhaker Mateti

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

OWL 2 EL ontologies are used to model and reason over data from diverse domains such as biomedicine, geography and road traffic. Data in these domains is increasing at a rate quicker than the increase in main memory and computation power of a single machine. Recent efforts in OWL reasoning algorithms lead to the decrease in classification time from several hours to a few seconds even for large ontologies like SNOMED CT. This is especially true for ontologies in the description logic EL+ (a fragment of the OWL 2 EL profile). Reasoners such as Pellet, Hermit, ELK etc. make …

Stringsauto And Mapsss Results For Oaei 2013, Michelle Cheatham, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

StringsAuto and MapSSS are two closely related ontology alignment systems. The StringsAuto matcher seeks to explore the limits of a syntactic-only approach to alignment. The MapSSS system then expands on this work by embedding the syntactic matching of StringsAuto within a more complete alignment system that also makes use of semantic and structural information. In this paper we describe the basic operation of the two systems and discuss their performance in the OAEI 2013 evaluation.

Driftwatch Pollinator Mapping Application, Shreyas G. Sundararaman, Larry Theller, Bernard Engel

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Over 65% percent of food consumed in the United States is pollinated by bees. Unfortunately, due to poor farming practices, pesticides are sprayed in bee sensitive areas unknowingly and as a result, the bee population is dwindling at an alarming rate. With lesser bees to pollinate crops, produce is compromised on a very large scale and this could have disastrous impacts on the nation's needs for food. Apiarists and beehive owners face the major responsibility of ensuring that their hives aren't affected by dangerous insecticides and pesticides from the farming areas that they might visit during their crop pollination cycles …

Is Real-Time Mobile Content-Based Image Retrieval Feasible?, Colin G. Graber, Anup Mohan, Yung-Hsiang Lu

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) is a method of searching through a database of images by using another image as a query instead of text. Recent advances in the processing power of smart phones and tablets, collectively known as mobile devices, have prompted researchers to attempt to construct mobile CBIR systems. Most of the research that has been conducted on mobile CBIR has focused on improving either its accuracy or its run-time, but not both simultaneously. We set out to answer the question: is real-time CBIR with manageable accuracy possible on current mobile devices? To find the answer to this question, …

High-Order Shock Capturing For Computational Aeroacoustics, Samuel Otto, Gregory Blaisdell Oct 2013

High-Order Shock Capturing For Computational Aeroacoustics, Samuel Otto, Gregory Blaisdell

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Jet noise is not only an annoyance to passengers and communities near airports, it is a major contributor to hearing loss in veterans who served on aircraft carriers, as well as a significant limiting factor for the growth of commercial airlines. High-fidelity large eddy simulation (LES) is an important tool for analyzing and predicting jet noise; however the utilized non-dissipative high order finite difference schemes produce instabilities at shock waves. Schemes for capturing shock waves, however, are more dissipative and do a poor job preserving turbulent structures and acoustic waves. To maximize the strengths of both approaches, hybrid methods utilize …

City Notifications As A Data Source For Traffic Management, Pramod Anantharam, Biplav Srivastava Oct 2013

City Notifications As A Data Source For Traffic Management, Pramod Anantharam, Biplav Srivastava

Kno.e.sis Publications

A common problem for cities of developing countries like India in managing traffic is the lack of basic automated instrumentation to track road conditions or vehicle locations. Still, to help their citizens make informed travel decisions based on changing city dynamics; many cities have an authorized, city-initiated, notification service in place to alert subscribing commuters about road conditions. Here, alternative means may be used to create informal textual notifications e.g., inputs from field personnel, citizen updates, and pre-authorized events from city calendar. In this paper, we show that collections of such notifications, when processed with information extraction techniques, can turn …

Real-time 3D engines are therefore an area of understandable interest and considerable value to students of Computer Science.

Improving Error Discovery In Guided Search Model Checking, Neha Rungta, Dr. Eric Mercer Oct 2013

Improving Error Discovery In Guided Search Model Checking, Neha Rungta, Dr. Eric Mercer

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As computer systems grow in complexity it is becoming harder to completely test them. The cost of finding and correcting errors after deployment is staggering. Current validation methods are not well suited to finding subtle errors laden in the concurrency of modern systems. This project searches the behavior in such systems, guiding the search to focus its time in areas that seem most likely to contain errors. This work decreases the amount of time and memory needed for the errors that are found and corrected before deployment of the system. In this project we have developed a heuristic that takes …

Flexiterm: A Flexible Term Recognition Method, Irena Spasić, Mark Greenwood, Alun Preece, Nick Francis, Glyn Elwyn

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background: The increasing amount of textual information in biomedicine requires effective term recognition methods to identify textual representations of domain-specific concepts as the first step toward automating its semantic interpretation. The dictionary look-up approaches may not always be suitable for dynamic domains such as biomedicine or the newly emerging types of media such as patient blogs, the main obstacles being the use of non-standardised terminology and high degree of term variation.

Openbasin—A Real-Time System To Access Hydrological And Weather Data, Matthew Maxwell, Dr. Ken Rodham

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In the Western United States and other arid regions of the world, careful water management is crucial. As part of this process, data must be collected, analyzed, and manipulated before it is used to support real-time water management decisions. To facilitate this complex data dissemination, I developed computer software that automates the process by which real-time hydrological and weather data is collected, analyzed, and distributed. This software is available as the open-source package entitled OpenBasin.

Leveraging Platoon Dispersion For Sybil Detection In Vehicular Networks, Muhammad Al Mutaz, Levi Malott, Sriram Chellappan Oct 2013

Leveraging Platoon Dispersion For Sybil Detection In Vehicular Networks, Muhammad Al Mutaz, Levi Malott, Sriram Chellappan

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

A Sybil attack is one where an adversary assumes multiple identities with the purpose of defeating the trust of an existing reputation system. When Sybil attacks are launched in vehicular networks, an added challenge in detecting malicious nodes is mobility that makes it increasingly difficult to tie a node to the location of attacks. In this paper, we present an innovative protocol for Sybil detection in vehicular networks. Considering that vehicular networks are cyber-physical systems integrating cyber and physical components, our technique exploits well-grounded results in the physical (i.e., transportation) domain to tackle the Sybil problem in the cyber domain. …

Image Origami, Eric Sokolowshy, Dr. Parris Egbert Oct 2013

Image Origami, Eric Sokolowshy, Dr. Parris Egbert

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Virtual reality, or the exploration of a virtual (computer-generated) environment, is an interesting field in computer science. However, building the virtual environment is a difficult task because of several factors. First, a realistic-looking object is very difficult to describe to a computer. The most common approach is to approximate an object with a set of polygons placed in three-dimensional space. As the number of polygons increases, a more realistic object is produced. However, a shape with many polygons takes a long time to draw on the screen. Second, a realistic scene contains many objects. If too many objects or too …

A Conservation And Rigidity Based Method For Detecting Critical Protein Residues, Bahar Akbal-Delibas, Filip Jagodzinski, Nurit Haspel Oct 2013

A Conservation And Rigidity Based Method For Detecting Critical Protein Residues, Bahar Akbal-Delibas, Filip Jagodzinski, Nurit Haspel

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Background

Certain amino acids in proteins play a critical role in determining their structural stability and function. Examples include flexible regions such as hinges which allow domain motion, and highly conserved residues on functional interfaces which allow interactions with other proteins. Detecting these regions can aid in the analysis and simulation of protein rigidity and conformational changes, and helps characterizing protein binding and docking. We present an analysis of critical residues in proteins using a combination of two complementary techniques. One method performs in-silico mutations and analyzes the protein's rigidity to infer the role of a point substitution to Glycine …

Stochastic Optimal Controller Design For Uncertain Nonlinear Networked Control System Via Neuro Dynamic Programming, Hao Xu, Sarangapani Jagannathan Oct 2013

Stochastic Optimal Controller Design For Uncertain Nonlinear Networked Control System Via Neuro Dynamic Programming, Hao Xu, Sarangapani Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The stochastic optimal controller design for the nonlinear networked control system (NNCS) with uncertain system dynamics is a challenging problem due to the presence of both system nonlinearities and communication network imperfections, such as random delays and packet losses, which are not unknown a priori. In the recent literature, neuro dynamic programming (NDP) techniques, based on value and policy iterations, have been widely reported to solve the optimal control of general affine nonlinear systems. However, for real-time control, value and policy iterations-based methodology are not suitable and time-based NDP techniques are preferred. In addition, output feedback-based controller designs are preferred …

The African Journal of Information Systems

Steganography is an ancient art. It is used for security in open systems. It focuses on hiding secret messages inside a cover medium. The most important property of a cover medium is the amount of data that can be stored inside it without changing its noticeable properties. There are many sophisticated techniques with which to hide, analyze, and recover that hidden information. This paper discusses an exploration in the use of Genetic Algorithm operators on the cover medium. We worked with text as the cover medium with the aim of increasing robustness and capacity of hidden data. Elitism is used …
