Getting It Right The First Time: Robot Mission Guarantees In The Presence Of Uncertainty, Damian Lyons, Ron Arkin, Paramesh Nirmal, Shu Jiang, Tsung-Ming Liu, Julia Deeb

Faculty Publications

Abstract—Certain robot missions need to perform predictably in a physical environment that may only be poorly characterized in advance. We have previously developed an approach to establishing performance guarantees for behavior-based controllers in a process-algebra framework. We extend that work here to include random variables, and we show how our prior results can be used to generate a Dynamic Bayesian Network for the coupled system of program and environment model. Verification is reduced to a filtering problem for this network. Finally, we present validation results that demonstrate the effectiveness of the verification of a multiple waypoint robot mission using this …

Automatic Domain Identification For Linked Open Data, Sarasi Lalithsena, Pascal Hitzler, Amit P. Sheth, Prateek Jain

Kno.e.sis Publications

Linked Open Data (LOD) has emerged as one of the largest collections of interlinked structured datasets on the Web. Although the adoption of such datasets for applications is increasing, identifying relevant datasets for a specific task or topic is still challenging. As an initial step to make such identification easier, we provide an approach to automatically identify the topic domains of given datasets. Our method utilizes existing knowledge sources, more specifically Freebase, and we present an evaluation which validates the topic domains we can identify with our system. Furthermore, we evaluate the effectiveness of identified topic domains for the purpose …

Finding Specifications Of While Statements Using Patterns, Aditi Barua, Yoonsik Cheon Nov 2013

Finding Specifications Of While Statements Using Patterns, Aditi Barua, Yoonsik Cheon

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

A formal correctness proof of code containing loops such as while statements typically uses the technique of proof-by-induction, and often the most difficult part of carrying out an inductive proof is formulating a correct induction hypothesis, a specification for a loop statement. An incorrect induction hypothesis will surely lead to a proof failure. In this paper we propose a systematic way for identifying specifications of while statements. The key idea of our approach is to categorize and document common patterns of while statements along with their specifications. This is based on our observation that similarly-structured while statements frequently have similarly-structured …

Semantics-Empowered Big Data Processing With Applications, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

We discuss the nature of Big Data and address the role of semantics in analyzing and processing Big Data that arises in the context of Physical-Cyber-Social Systems. We organize our research around the Five Vs of Big Data, where four of the Vs are harnessed to produce the fifth V - value. To handle the challenge of Volume, we advocate semantic perception that can convert low-level observational data to higher-level abstractions more suitable for decision-making. To handle the challenge of Variety, we resort to the use of semantic models and annotations of data so that much of the intelligent processing …

Towards Automated Network Configuration Management, Khalid Elmansor Nov 2013

Towards Automated Network Configuration Management, Khalid Elmansor

College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations

Modern networks are designed to satisfy a wide variety of competing goals related to network operation requirements such as reachability, security, performance, reliability and availability. These high level goals are realized through a complex chain of low level configuration commands performed on network devices.

As networks become larger, more complex and more heterogeneous, human errors become the most significant threat to network operation and the main cause of network outage. In addition, the gap between high-level requirements and low-level configuration data is continuously increasing and difficult to close. Although many solutions have been introduced to reduce the complexity of configuration …

Social Group Detection Based Routing In Delay Tolerant Networks, Roy Cabaniss, Srinivasa S. Vulli, Sanjay Madria Nov 2013

Social Group Detection Based Routing In Delay Tolerant Networks, Roy Cabaniss, Srinivasa S. Vulli, Sanjay Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

When implementing Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, a key characteristic of the network is the mobility pattern of the nodes. Based on the application, nodes can follow semi-predictable patterns, such as the routes followed by Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, or the more strict schedules followed by aerial reconnaissance. Optimal routing schemes tend to take advantage of information regarding these patterns. In social environments, such as wildlife tracking or sending messages between humans, the devices and/or users will follow regular contact habits, tending to encounter social groups in which they participate. By identifying these groups, the patterns are used to optimize routing …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We are witnessing the rapid expansion of smart devices in our daily life. The need for individual privacy protection calls for anonymous entity authentication techniques with affordable efficiency upon the resource-constrained smart devices. Towards this objective, in this paper we propose self-blindable credential, a lightweight anonymous entity authentication primitive. We provide a formulation of the primitive and present two concrete instantiations. The first scheme implements verifier-local revocation and the second scheme enhances the former with forward security. Our analytical performance results show that our schemes outperform relevant existing schemes.

Progressive Reliability Method And Its Application To Offshore Mooring Systems, Mir Emad Mousavi, Paolo Gardoni, Mehdi Maadooliat

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Assessing the reliability of complex systems (e.g. structures) is essential for a reliability-based optimal design that balances safety and costs of such systems. This paper proposes the Progressive Reliability Method (PRM) for the quantification of the reliability of complex systems. The proposed method is a closed-form solution for calculating the probability of failure. The new method is flexible to the definition of “failure” (i.e., can consider serviceability and ultimate-strength failures) and uses the rules of probability theory to estimate the failure probability of the system or its components. The method is first discussed in general and then illustrated in two …

Assessing Protein Conformational Sampling Methods Based On Bivariate Lag-Distributions Of Backbone Angles, Mehdi Maadooliat, Xin Gao, Jianhua Z. Huang

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Despite considerable progress in the past decades, protein structure prediction remains one of the major unsolved problems in computational biology. Angular-sampling-based methods have been extensively studied recently due to their ability to capture the continuous conformational space of protein structures. The literature has focused on using a variety of parametric models of the sequential dependencies between angle pairs along the protein chains. In this article, we present a thorough review of angular-sampling-based methods by assessing three main questions: What is the best distribution type to model the protein angles? What is a reasonable number of components in a mixture model …

Pcaanalyser: A 2d-Image Analysis Based Module For Effective Determination Of Prostate Cancer Progression In 3d Culture, Md Tamjidul Hoque, Louisa C. E. Windus, Carrie J. Lovitt, Vicky M. Avery

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Three-dimensional (3D) in vitro cell based assays for Prostate Cancer (PCa) research are rapidly becoming the preferred alternative to that of conventional 2D monolayer cultures. 3D assays more precisely mimic the microenvironment found in vivo, and thus are ideally suited to evaluate compounds and their suitability for progression in the drug discovery pipeline. To achieve the desired high throughput needed for most screening programs, automated quantification of 3D cultures is required. Towards this end, this paper reports on the development of a prototype analysis module for an automated high-content-analysis (HCA) system, which allows for accurate and fast investigation of …

Efficient Lossy Trapdoor Functions Based On Subgroup Membership Assumptions, Haiyang Xue, Bao Li, Xianhui Lu, Dingding Jia, Yamin Liu Nov 2013

Efficient Lossy Trapdoor Functions Based On Subgroup Membership Assumptions, Haiyang Xue, Bao Li, Xianhui Lu, Dingding Jia, Yamin Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose a generic construction of lossy trapdoor function from the subgroup membership assumption. We present three concrete constructions based on the k-DCR assumption over Z∗ N2 , the extended psubgroup assumption over Z∗ N2 , and the decisional RSA subgroup membership assumption over Z∗ N . Our constructions are more efficient than the previous construction from the DCR assumption over Z∗ Ns (s ≥ 3).

Adaptable Ciphertext-Policy Attribute-Based Encryption, Junzuo Lai, Robert H. Deng, Yanjiang Yang, Jian Weng Nov 2013

Adaptable Ciphertext-Policy Attribute-Based Encryption, Junzuo Lai, Robert H. Deng, Yanjiang Yang, Jian Weng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we introduce a new cryptographic primitive, called adaptable ciphertext-policy attribute-based encryption (CP-ABE). Adaptable CP-ABE extends the traditional CP-ABE by allowing a semi-trusted proxy to modify a ciphertext under one access policy into ciphertexts of the same plaintext under any other access policies; the proxy, however, learns nothing about the underlying plaintext. With such “adaptability” possessed by the proxy, adaptable CP-ABE has many real world applications, such as handling policy changes in CP-ABE encryption of cloud data and outsourcing of CP-ABE encryption. Specifically, we first specify a formal model of adaptable CP-ABE; then, based on the CP-ABE scheme …

What You Want Is Not What You Get: Predicting Sharing Policies For Text-Based Content On Facebook, Arunesh Sinha, Li Yan, Lujo Bauer Nov 2013

What You Want Is Not What You Get: Predicting Sharing Policies For Text-Based Content On Facebook, Arunesh Sinha, Li Yan, Lujo Bauer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

As the amount of content users publish on social networking sites rises, so do the danger and costs of inadvertently sharing content with an unintended audience. Studies repeatedly show that users frequently misconfigure their policies or misunderstand the privacy features offered by social networks. A way to mitigate these problems is to develop automated tools to assist users in correctly setting their policy. This paper explores the viability of one such approach: we examine the extent to which machine learning can be used to deduce users' sharing preferences for content posted on Facebook. To generate data on which to evaluate …

Symmetry Robust Descriptor For Non-Rigid Surface Matching, Zhiyuan Zhang, Kangkang Yin, Kelvin W. C. Foong Nov 2013

Symmetry Robust Descriptor For Non-Rigid Surface Matching, Zhiyuan Zhang, Kangkang Yin, Kelvin W. C. Foong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose a novel shape descriptor that is robust in differentiating intrinsic symmetric points on geometric surfaces. Our motivation is that even the state-of-theart shape descriptors and non-rigid surface matching algorithms suffer from symmetry flips. They cannot differentiate surface points that are symmetric or near symmetric. Hence a left hand of one human model may be matched to a right hand of another. Our Symmetry Robust Descriptor (SRD) is based on a signed angle field, which can be calculated from the gradient fields of the harmonic fields of two point pairs. Experiments show that the proposed shape …

A Social Network-Empowered Research Analytics Framework For Project Selection, Thushari Silva, Zhiling Guo, Jian Ma, Hongbing Jiang, Huaping Chen Nov 2013

A Social Network-Empowered Research Analytics Framework For Project Selection, Thushari Silva, Zhiling Guo, Jian Ma, Hongbing Jiang, Huaping Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Traditional approaches for research project selection by government funding agencies mainly focus on the matching of research relevance by keywords or disciplines. Other research relevant information such as social connections (e.g., collaboration and co-authorship) and productivity (e.g., quality, quantity, and citations of published journal articles) of researchers is largely ignored. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a social network-empowered research analytics framework (RAF) for research project selections. Scholarmate.com, a professional research social network with easy access to research relevant information, serves as a platform to build researcher profiles from three dimensions, i.e., relevance, productivity and connectivity. Building upon profiles …

Social Sensing For Urban Crisis Management: The Case Of Singapore Haze, Philips Kokoh Prasetyo, Ming Gao, Ee Peng Lim, Christie N. Scollon

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Sensing social media for trends and events has become possible as increasing number of users rely on social media to share information. In the event of a major disaster or social event, one can therefore study the event quickly by gathering and analyzing social media data. One can also design appropriate responses such as allocating resources to the affected areas, sharing event related information, and managing public anxiety. Past research on social event studies using social media often focused on one type of data analysis (e.g., hashtag clusters, diffusion of events, influential users, etc.) on a single social media data …

Community Question Answering (CQA) sites are becoming increasingly important source of information where users can share knowledge on various topics. Although these platforms bring new opportunities for users to seek help or provide solutions, they also pose many challenges with the ever growing size of the community. The sheer number of questions posted everyday motivates the problem of routing questions to the appropriate users who can answer them. In this paper, we propose an approach to predict the best answerer for a new question on CQA site. Our approach considers both user interest and user expertise relevant to the topics …
