Modeling And Verification Of Security Properties For Critical Infrastructure Protection, Ravi Akella, Bruce M. Mcmillin Apr 2013

Modeling And Verification Of Security Properties For Critical Infrastructure Protection, Ravi Akella, Bruce M. Mcmillin

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recently, studies have revealed new security issues in critical infrastructures, emphasizing the need for verification of security properties. Any mechanism to verify the security of such systems should merge the cyber and physical aspects in a unified way. This paper proposes a novel direction using process algebras to model and verify security properties within a cyber-physical system (CPS). Specifically, we adopt the π-calculus to perform security analysis of a representative CPS, an advanced electric smart grid. We present the verification of an information flow security property, non- deducibility, defined in terms of more discriminating behavioral equivalences available in π-calculus compared …

Visualizing Graph Features For Fast Port Scan Detection, Maggie Cheng, Quanmin Ye, Robert F. Erbacher Apr 2013

Visualizing Graph Features For Fast Port Scan Detection, Maggie Cheng, Quanmin Ye, Robert F. Erbacher

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Detection of sophisticated network scans, such as low and slow scans, requires correlation of large amounts of network data over long periods of time. The volume of data obfuscating such scans can be overwhelming and makes computation challenging. Such scans pose network security risks since identifying running services, the goal of executing such scans, is the first step in launching an attack on the scanned host. To detect sophisticated scans, we propose the integration of graph feature extraction techniques with visualization to simultaneously optimize computational complexity and human analyst time. The integrated approach uses graph modeling and preprocessing to make …

Sensual Cultures: Exploring Sensory Orientation, Lauren Sonnenstrahl Benedict Apr 2013

Sensual Cultures: Exploring Sensory Orientation, Lauren Sonnenstrahl Benedict

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

We use our senses every day, consciously or unconsciously, based on our cultural needs and preferences. These sensory orientations shape and are shaped by what a given culture defines as acceptable. For this reason, different sensory orientations result in different strengths and areas of emphasis and de-emphasis. Becoming aware of different sensory orientations and their associated cultures allows us to realize what we are missing in our own sensory orientations that inform our cultural habits. Familiarity with various sensory orientations may cultivate greater cultural acceptance as well. To analyze and illustrate such differences, an educational app for iPads was created …

Vulnerability Analysis Of A Smart Grid With Monitoring And Control System, Maggie Xiaoyan Cheng, Mariesa Crow, Robert F. Erbacher Apr 2013

Vulnerability Analysis Of A Smart Grid With Monitoring And Control System, Maggie Xiaoyan Cheng, Mariesa Crow, Robert F. Erbacher

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Large scale power outage is typically the consequence of cascading failures propagated through a power system. To mitigate failure propagation, wide area monitoring and control system is introduced. However, as the physical system is tightly coupled with the cyber system, new threats are introduced due to possible cyber-attacks and failures of the communication system. This paper presents a new framework for vulnerability analysis. Under this framework, we can identify the vulnerable components and the critical components of a cyber physical system. Distinct from previous work, our model considers the interaction between the different components of the cyber physical system and …

Strong Location Privacy: A Case Study On Shortest Path Queries [Invited Paper], Kyriakos Mouratidis Apr 2013

Strong Location Privacy: A Case Study On Shortest Path Queries [Invited Paper], Kyriakos Mouratidis

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The last few years have witnessed an increasing availability of location-based services (LBSs). Although particularly useful, such services raise serious privacy concerns. For example, exposing to a (potentially untrusted) LBS the client's position may reveal personal information, such as social habits, health condition, shopping preferences, lifestyle choices, etc. There is a large body of work on protecting the location privacy of the clients. In this paper, we focus on shortest path queries, describe a framework based on private information retrieval (PIR), and conclude with open questions about the practicality of PIR and other location privacy approaches.

The other three students completed BS degrees and are currently employed as software engineers at Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon. These six mentored undergraduate …

Development Of An Api As A Solution To Data Insularity Amongst Dietary-Need Applications, Raphael Lapuma Apr 2013

Development Of An Api As A Solution To Data Insularity Amongst Dietary-Need Applications, Raphael Lapuma

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

When multiple competing applications in the same field use only their own sets of user-generated review data and do not collaborate with other applications, data is used in isolation. This factor, which the author will refer to as "data insularity," segregates each application's community of users from other applications' communities, thus creating a limited and fragmented set of data, which discourages the creation of new applications in the industry, and adversely affects the end user. This study will propose a prototype API for applications in the restaurant industry as a solution to the limited and insular use of data amongst …

Down Syndrome Pathway Analysis, Dr. Mark Clement Apr 2013

Down Syndrome Pathway Analysis, Dr. Mark Clement

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Many of the most serious medical problems that plague humanity are caused by problems in the genetic regulatory network. Heart disease, cancer and many other maladies could be cured if we understood how genes interact with each other in order to produce different symptoms. Many of these problems are hard to deal with because all of the 20,000 or so genes in the human genome may be responsible for part of the problem. Down Syndrome is caused by three copies of chromosome 21 and results in heart defects, decreased brain function and abnormal jaw and finger proportions. Because the problem …

Hybrid Spread-Spectrum Tcp For Combating Fraudulent Cyber Activities Against Reconnaissance Attacks, Simon Enoch Yusuf, Olumide Longe Apr 2013

Hybrid Spread-Spectrum Tcp For Combating Fraudulent Cyber Activities Against Reconnaissance Attacks, Simon Enoch Yusuf, Olumide Longe

The African Journal of Information Systems

The inefficiencies of current intrusion detection system against fraudulent cyber activities attracts the attention of computer gurus, also known as “hackers” to exploit known weakness on a particular host or network. These hackers are expert programmers who mainly focus on how the Internet works, and they interact with each other to know its strengths and weaknesses. Then they develop advanced tools which an average attacker with little background can use to know the liveness, reachability and running service on the network. Once an attacker identifies these details, he can accurately launch an effective attack and get maximum benefit out of …

Agile And Evm For The Dod: A Review Of The Challenges And A New Approach To Solve Them, Roberta Winterowd Apr 2013

Agile And Evm For The Dod: A Review Of The Challenges And A New Approach To Solve Them, Roberta Winterowd

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Department of Defense (DoD) acquisitions must improve program performance while working within budgetary constraints. The DoD community shows an interest in utilizing Agile methodologies, but struggles to reap Agile's benefits. They encountered challenges including the historically built up processes that enforce heavy-weight oversight; the outdated, manufacturing focused Work Breakdown Structures (WBS) provided in DoD Handbook: Work Breakdown Structures (WBS) for Defense Material Items (MIL-STD-881C); and the inability of the traditional waterfall based processes to accommodate iterative development. The author used the scientific method to review the documented issues encountered when using Agile on a DoD program within the constraints of …

Warping-Based Approach To Offline Handwriting Recognition, Douglas J. Kennard Apr 2013

Warping-Based Approach To Offline Handwriting Recognition, Douglas J. Kennard

Theses and Dissertations

An enormous amount of the historical record is currently trapped in non-indexed handwritten format. Even after being scanned into images, only a minute fraction of the existing records can be manually transcribed / indexed with reasonable amounts of time and cost. Although progress continues to be made with automatic handwriting recognition (HR), it is not yet good enough to replace manual transcription or indexing. Much of the recent HR work has focused on incremental improvements to methods based on Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) and other similar probabilistic approaches. In this dissertation we present a fundamentally new approach to HR based …

Annual Celebration of Student Scholarship and Creativity

The rapid rise of Kenya's mobile payment system, M-PESA , has grasped the attention of policy makers and private enterprise alike. In just six years M-PESA has transformed how money flows throughout Kenya, and similar systems are gaining traction elsewhere in Africa. This project examines the impact of mobile payment system adoption on the economic advancement of Kenyan and Tanzanian microentrepreneurs. This work will further the understanding of mobile payment systems’ contribution to the economic growth of microenterprises, which may have implications for poverty reduction in these two nations.

Separable Subsurface Scattering: An Opengl Implementation, Michael Tetzlaff Apr 2013

Separable Subsurface Scattering: An Opengl Implementation, Michael Tetzlaff

Honors Student Works

The light reflection of many materials, including skin, milk, and marble, are not dominated by direct reflection, but rather by the subsurface scattering of light [1]. Most real-time computer graphics techniques, most notably Phong lighting, do not account for subsurface scattering of the diffuse reflectance term. Recently, however, Jorge Jiminez has produced an efficient technique involving only two screen-space blur passes which can achieve the effect of subsurface scattering in real time[3]. Jiminez’ implementation was in Microsoft’s DirectX, so this project is an attempt to implement his technique in OpenGL, which has free open-source implementations.

Full Superposition Principle Is Inconsistent With Non-Deterministic Versions Of Quantum Physics, Andres Ortiz, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2013

Full Superposition Principle Is Inconsistent With Non-Deterministic Versions Of Quantum Physics, Andres Ortiz, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Many practical systems are non-deterministic, in the sense that available information about the initial states and control values does not uniquely determine the future states. For some such systems, it is important to take quantum effects into account. For that, we need to develop non-deterministic versions of quantum physics. In this paper, we show that for non-deterministic versions of quantum physics, we cannot require superposition principle -- one of the main fundamental principles of modern quantum mechanics. Specifically, while we can consider superpositions of states corresponding to the same version of the future dynamics, it is not consistently possible to …

A New Analog Optical Processing Scheme For Solving Np-Hard Problems, Michael Zakharevich, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2013

A New Analog Optical Processing Scheme For Solving Np-Hard Problems, Michael Zakharevich, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Many real-life problems are, in general, NP-hard, i.e., informally speaking, are difficult to solve. To be more precise, a problem p is NP-hard means that every problem from the class NP can be reduced to this problem p. Thus, if we have an efficient algorithm for solving one NP-hard problem, we can use this reduction to get a more efficient way of solving all the problems from the class NP. To speed up computations, it is reasonable to base them on the fastest possible physical process -- i.e., on light. It is known that analog optical processing indeed speeds up …

An Ontological Approach To Capture Data Provenance Across Multiple Platforms, Leonardo Salayandia Apr 2013

An Ontological Approach To Capture Data Provenance Across Multiple Platforms, Leonardo Salayandia

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The process of collecting and transforming data can extend across different platforms, both physical and digital. Capturing provenance that reflects the actions involved in such a process in a consistent manner can be difficult and involve the use of multiple tools. An approach based on formal ontologies and software engineering practices is presented to capture data provenance. The approach starts by creating ontologies about data collection and transformation processes. These ontologies, referred to as Workflow-Driven Ontologies, establish a consistent view of the process that is independent of the platform used to carry out the process. Next, software modules are generated, …

Collaborative Requirements Engineering Notation For Planning Globally Distributed Projects, Paula Laurent Apr 2013

Collaborative Requirements Engineering Notation For Planning Globally Distributed Projects, Paula Laurent

College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations

Requirements engineering represents a critical phase of the software development lifecycle in which requirements describing the functional and non-functional behaviors of a system are elicited, modeled, analyzed, negotiated, agreed, and specified. In traditional software systems these tasks are typically performed in face-to-face meetings between requirements engineers and the project level stakeholders. However, in today’s global software development environment, it is becoming increasingly commonplace for stakeholders to be dispersed across multiple geographical locations and time zones. Under these circumstances, face-to-face meetings become expensive, and often impossible to facilitate, and as a result the success of the requirements process relies, at least …

Ten ice-sheet models are used to study sensitivity of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets to prescribed changes of surface mass balance, sub-ice-shelf melting and basal sliding. Results exhibit a large range in projected contributions to sea-level change. In most cases, the ice volume above flotation lost is linearly dependent on the strength of the forcing. Combinations of forcings can be closely approximated by linearly summing the contributions from single forcing experiments, suggesting that nonlinear feedbacks are modest. Our models indicate that Greenland is more sensitive than Antarctica to likely atmospheric changes in temperature and precipitation, while Antarctica is more …

Data Replication In Cooperative Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks: A Game Theoretic Replication Algorithm Using Volunteers' Dilemma, Dan Hirsch, Sanjay Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The mobile computing environment provides many benefits such as ubiquitous access to computing but includes constraints on resources such as available bandwidth and battery life. Replication is a widely recognized method for balancing the demands of storage space with bandwidth and battery life. We propose a novel scheme that seeks to strategically balance these constrained resources through a cooperative game-theory approach for replication in a mobile environment. Our replication strategy relies on the cooperation of the nodes within the network to make replica caching decisions which are spatiotemporally local-optimal for the network from an energy and bandwidth conservation standpoint. In …
