An Assessment Of Strategies For Choosing Between Competitive Marketplaces, Tim Miller, Jinzhong Niu Jan 2012

An Assessment Of Strategies For Choosing Between Competitive Marketplaces, Tim Miller, Jinzhong Niu

Publications and Research

Traders that operate in markets with multiple competing marketplaces must often choose with which marketplace they will trade. These choices encourage marketplaces to seek competitive advantages against each other by adjusting various parameters, such as the price they charge, or how they match buyers and sellers. Traders can take advantage of this competition to improve utility. However, appropriate strategies must be used to decide with which marketplace a trader should shout. In this paper, we assess several different solutions to the problem of marketplace selection by running simulations of double auctions using the JCAT platform. The parameter spaces of these …

Minimotif Miner (MnM available at http://minimotifminer.org or http://mnm.engr.uconn.edu) is an online database for identifying new minimotifs in protein queries. Minimotifs are short contiguous peptide sequences that have a known function in at least one protein. Here we report the third release of the MnM database which has now grown 60-fold to approximately 300,000 minimotifs. Since short minimotifs are by their nature not very complex we also summarize a new set of false-positive filters and linear regression scoring that vastly enhance minimotif prediction accuracy on a test data set. This online database can be used to predict new functions in proteins …

A Scalable Distributed Syntactic, Semantic And Lexical Language Model, Ming Tan, Wenli Zhou, Lei Zheng, Shaojun Wang Jan 2012

A Scalable Distributed Syntactic, Semantic And Lexical Language Model, Ming Tan, Wenli Zhou, Lei Zheng, Shaojun Wang

Kno.e.sis Publications

This paper presents an attempt at building a large scale distributed composite language model that is formed by seamlessly integrating an n-gram model, a structured language model, and probabilistic latent semantic analysis under a directed Markov random field paradigm to simultaneously account for local word lexical information, mid-range sentence syntactic structure, and long-span document semantic content. The composite language model has been trained by performing a convergent N-best list approximate EM algorithm and a follow-up EM algorithm to improve word prediction power on corpora with up to a billion tokens and stored on a supercomputer. The large scale distributed composite …

Alignment-Based Querying Of Linked Open Data, Amit Krishna Joshi, Prateek Jain, Pascal Hitzler, Peter Z. Yeh, Kunal Verma, Amit P. Sheth, Mariana Damova

Kno.e.sis Publications

The Linked Open Data (LOD) cloud is rapidly becoming the largest interconnected source of structured data on diverse domains. The potential of the LOD cloud is enormous, ranging from solving challenging AI issues such as open domain question answering to automated knowledge discovery. However, due to an inherent distributed nature of LOD and a growing number of ontologies and vocabularies used in LOD datasets, querying over multiple datasets and retrieving LOD data remains a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to querying linked data by using alignments for processing queries whose constituent data come from heterogeneous …

Trust And Reputation For Successful Software Self-Organisation, Pierpaolo Dondio, Jean Marc Seigneur Jan 2012

Trust And Reputation For Successful Software Self-Organisation, Pierpaolo Dondio, Jean Marc Seigneur

Books/Book Chapters

Abstract An increasing number of dynamic software evolution approaches is com- monly based on integrating or utilising new pieces of software. This requires reso- lution of issues such as ensuring awareness of newly available software pieces and selection of most appropriate software pieces to use. Other chapters in this book dis- cuss dynamic software evolution focusing primarily on awareness, integration and utilisation of new software pieces, paying less attention on how selection among different software pieces is made. The selection issue is quite important since in the increasingly dynamic software world quite a few new software pieces occur over time, …

Web Supported Emplotment: Using Object And Event Descriptions To Facilitate Storytelling Online And In Galleries, Trevor Collins, Paul Mulholland, Annika Wolff

Publications

The process of emplotment refers to the selection of significant events in a story and the identification of pertinent relations between them, in order to produce a plot providing an interpretation of those events. We are investigating how models of emplotment can be applied to develop web-based tools for creating and interpreting narratives. In particular, we are focusing on the process undertaken by art gallery professionals to design and present exhibitions. This paper presents a set of plot relations developed in collaboration with museum professionals from two national galleries in Ireland, and shows how theories of narrative and digital cultural …

On Binaural Spatialization And The Use Of Gpgpu For Audio Processing, Davide Andrea Mauro Phd

Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering Faculty Research

3D recordings and audio, namely techniques that aim to create the perception of sound sources placed anywhere in 3 dimensional space, are becoming an interesting resource for composers, live performances and augmented reality. This thesis focuses on binaural spatialization techniques.

We will tackle the problem from three different perspectives. The first one is related to the implementation of an engine for audio convolution, this is a real implementation problem where we will confront with a number of already available systems trying to achieve better results in terms of performances. General Purpose computing on Graphic Processing Units (GPGPU) is a promising …

On The Design Of Advanced Filters For Biological Networks Using Graph Theoretic Properties, Kathryn Dempsey Cooper, Tzu-Yi Chen, Sanjukta Bhowmick, Hesham Ali

Interdisciplinary Informatics Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Network modeling of biological systems is a powerful tool for analysis of high-throughput datasets by computational systems biologists. Integration of networks to form a heterogeneous model requires that each network be as noise-free as possible while still containing relevant biological information. In earlier work, we have shown that the graph theoretic properties of gene correlation networks can be used to highlight and maintain important structures such as high degree nodes, clusters, and critical links between sparse network branches while reducing noise. In this paper, we propose the design of advanced network filters using structurally related graph theoretic properties. While spanning …

Coverings And Matchings In R-Partite Hypergraphs, Douglas S. Altner, J. Paul Brooks Jan 2012

Coverings And Matchings In R-Partite Hypergraphs, Douglas S. Altner, J. Paul Brooks

Statistical Sciences and Operations Research Publications

Ryser's conjecture postulates that for r -partite hypergraphs, τ ≤ (r - 1)ν where τ is the covering number of the hypergraph and ν is the matching number. Although this conjecture has been open since the 1960s, researchers have resolved it for special cases such as for intersecting hypergraphs where r ≤ 5. In this article, we prove several results pertaining to matchings and coverings in r -partite intersecting hypergraphs. First, we prove that finding a minimum cardinality vertex cover for an r -partite intersecting hypergraph is NP-hard. Second, we note Ryser's conjecture for intersecting hypergraphs is easily resolved …

Object Recognition Based On Shape And Function: Inspired By Children's Word Acquisition, Akihiro Eguchi Jan 2012

Object Recognition Based On Shape And Function: Inspired By Children's Word Acquisition, Akihiro Eguchi

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper explores a new approach to computational object recognition by borrowing an idea from child language acquisition studies in developmental psychology. Whereas previous image recognition research used shape to recognize and label a target object, the model proposed in this study added the function of the object resulting in a more accurate recognition. This study makes use of new gaming technology, Microsoft’s Kinect, in implementing the proposed new object recognition model. A demonstration of the model developed in this project properly infers different names for similarly shaped objects and the same name for differently shaped objects.

On The Role Of Social Identity And Cohesion In Characterizing Online Social Communities, Hemant Purohit, Yiye Ruan, David Fuhry, Srinivasan Parthasarathy, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Two prevailing theories for explaining social group or community structure are cohesion and identity. The social cohesion approach posits that social groups arise out of an aggregation of individuals that have mutual interpersonal attraction as they share common characteristics. These characteristics can range from common interests to kinship ties and from social values to ethnic backgrounds. In contrast, the social identity approach posits that an individual is likely to join a group based on an intrinsic self-evaluation at a cognitive or perceptual level. In other words group members typically share an awareness of a common category membership. In this work …

A Federated Approach For Increasing The Timely Throughput Of Real-Time Data Services, Yan Zhou, Kyoung-Don Kang Jan 2012

A Federated Approach For Increasing The Timely Throughput Of Real-Time Data Services, Yan Zhou, Kyoung-Don Kang

Computer Science Faculty Scholarship

As the demand for real-time data services (e.g., ecommerce or online auctions) increases, it is desired for a real-time database to increase the timely throughput−the amount of data processed in a timely manner. As the timely throughput of a centralized real-time database is limited, it is desired to federate a set of real-time databases to increases the timely throughput. However, related work on distributed real-time databases is scarce. Most existing approaches are highly complex, incurring non-trivial overheads. Neither are they implemented in a real database system. To address the problem, we design a new system architecture for federated real-time data …
