Transmission Scheduling Based On A New Conflict Graph Model For Multicast In Multihop Wireless Networks, Maggie Cheng, Quanmin Ye

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In multicast applications, the end-to-end delay from the source to a group member is determined by the multicast tree topology and the waiting time at each relay node. This paper addresses when the multicast tree is given how to schedule wireless nodes for transmission so that network delay is minimized. We first model the conflict relation among wireless transmissions in a conflict graph, and then we compute a transmission schedule based on an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) model. Since solving ILP problem is NP-hard, a heuristic is designed to solve the ILP problem. the resulting schedule is conflict-free, which is …

Some Explicit Solutions For A Class Of One-Phase Stefan Problems, Olawanle P. Layeni, Jesse V. Johnson Jan 2012

Some Explicit Solutions For A Class Of One-Phase Stefan Problems, Olawanle P. Layeni, Jesse V. Johnson

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Salva and Tarzia, [N.N. Salva, D.A. Tarzia, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 379 (2011) 240 - 244], gave explicit solutions of a similarity type for a class of free boundary problem for a semi-infinite material. In this paper, through an elementary approach and less stringent assumption on data, we obtain more general results than those given by their central result, and thereby construct explicit solutions for a wider class of Stefan problems with a type of variable heat flux boundary conditions. Further, explicit solutions of certain forced one-phase Stefan problems are given.

Accurate Player Modeling And Cheat-Proof Gameplay In Peer-To-Peer Based Multiplayer Online Games, Daniel Everett Pittman Jr. Jan 2012

Accurate Player Modeling And Cheat-Proof Gameplay In Peer-To-Peer Based Multiplayer Online Games, Daniel Everett Pittman Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We present the first detailed measurement study and models of the virtual populations in popular Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs). Our results show that, amongst several MMORPGs with very different play styles, the patterns of behaviors are consistent and can be described using a common set of models.

In addition, we break down actions common to Trading Card Games (TCGs) and explain how they can be executed between players without the need for a third party referee. In each action, the player is either prevented from cheating, or if they do cheat, the opponent will be able to prove …

Autonomic Database Management: State Of The Art And Future Trends, Katarina Grolinger, Miriam Am Capretz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

In recent years, Database Management Systems (DBMS) have increased significantly in size and complexity, increasing the extent to which database administration is a time-consuming and expensive task. Database Administrator (DBA) expenses have become a significant part of the total cost of ownership. This results in the need to develop Autonomous Database Management systems (ADBMS) that would manage themselves without human intervention. Accordingly, this paper evaluates the current state of autonomous database systems and identifies gaps and challenges in the achievement of fully autonomic databases. In addition to highlighting technical challenges and gaps, we identify one human factor, gaining the trust …

Ontology–Based Representation Of Simulation Models, Katarina Grolinger, Miriam A.M. Capretz, José R. Marti, Krishan D. Srivastava

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Ontologies have been used in a variety of domains for multiple purposes such as establishing common terminology, organizing domain knowledge and describing domain in a machine-readable form. Moreover, ontologies are the foundation of the Semantic Web and often semantic integration is achieved using ontology. Even though simulation demonstrates a number of similar characteristics to Semantic Web or semantic integration, including heterogeneity in the simulation domain, representation and semantics, the application of ontology in the simulation domain is still in its infancy. This paper proposes an ontology-based representation of simulation models. The goal of this research is to facilitate comparison among …

An Iterative Association Rule Mining Framework To K-Anonymize A Dataset, Michael Hayes, Miriam A M Capretz, Jefferey Reed, Cheryl Forchuk

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Preserving and maintaining client privacy and anonymity is of utmost importance in any domain and specially so in healthcare, as loss of either of these can result in legal and ethical implications. Further, it is sometimes important to extract meaningful and useful information from existing data for research or management purposes. In this case it is necessary for the organization who manages the dataset to be certain that no attributes can identify individuals or group of individuals. This paper proposes an extendable and generalized framework to anonymize a dataset using an iterative association rule mining approach. The proposed framework also …

Semantic technologies and ontologies play an increasing role in scientific workflow systems and knowledge infrastructures. While ontologies are mostly used for the semantic annotation of metadata, semantic technologies enable searching metadata catalogs beyond simple keywords, with some early evidence of semantics used for data translation. However, the next generation of distributed and interdisciplinary knowledge infrastructures will require capabilities beyond simple subsumption reasoning over subclass relations. In this work, we report from the EarthCube Semantics Community by highlighting which role semantics and ontologies should play in the EarthCube knowledge infrastructure. We target the interested domain scientist and, thus, introduce the value …

Key Ingredients For Your Next Semantics Elevator Talk, Krzysztof Janowicz, Pascal Hitzler Jan 2012

Key Ingredients For Your Next Semantics Elevator Talk, Krzysztof Janowicz, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

2012 brought a major change to the semantics research community. Discussions on the use and benefits of semantic technologies are shifting away from the why to the how. Surprisingly this more in stakeholder interest is not accompanied by a more detailed understanding of what semantics research is about. Instead of blaming others for their (wrong) expectations, we need to learn how to emphasize the paradigm shift proposed by semantics research while abstracting from technical details and advocate the added value in a way that relates to the immediate needs of individual stakeholders without overselling. This paper highlights some of …

A Systematic Method For Discovering Effective Patterns Of Virtual Project Management, Deepak Khazanchi, Ilze Zigurs

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

The effective management of virtual projects within global organizations is an inherently collaborative activity as well as an increasingly critical issue. The concept of patterns provides a useful theoretical framework by which we can study the design of effective practices for the management of virtual projects. However, a number of significant gaps exist in our knowledge of this area and one of the most important is the need for a systematic method for discovering effective patterns. We propose such a systematic method and provide a detailed example of the use of our proposed pattern discovery method.

In this work, the Hydrological Visualization and Analysis System is developed to help both hydrologists and local people view and examine the high resolution hydrological data. Then, this data is analyzed to determine which variables are related to the change of drought condition in Arlington, Texas. A new correlation measurement method called sectional correlation is proposed and used as an objective function of the drought …

Dynamic Cache Reconfiguration For Energy Optimization In Chip Multiprocessors, Gaurav Puri Jan 2012

Dynamic Cache Reconfiguration For Energy Optimization In Chip Multiprocessors, Gaurav Puri

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Cache reconfiguration for chip multiprocessors (CMP) in order to reduce energy consumption is a challenging research problem. This thesis presents a dynamic scheme for level one cache design where the processing core can dynamically switch to a lower energy configuration. The proposed scheme is based on a heuristic that can either be executed as part of the firmware or implemented in hardware with very low additional overhead. The heuristic functions periodically after a pre-defined fixed interval for each processing core. The heuristic first examines the statistics calculated over the previous intervals and then switches the cache to an improved configuration …

Scheduling plays an important role in a person's life. Even computers use the concept of scheduling when it comes to processing jobs. Scheduling is important in cases normally when there is large data to process and manual scheduling is not an easy option to go for. A new concept of developing a scheduler has been discussed in this thesis. The algorithm was designed keeping in mind the Para Transit agencies that operate on federal funds to provide cheap transport service to the clients. The algorithm presented here is developed with the intention to reduce the delay faced by the client …

Querying Entity-Relationship Graphs By Example Tuples: Experimental Evaluation And User Study, Mahesh Gupta Jan 2012

Querying Entity-Relationship Graphs By Example Tuples: Experimental Evaluation And User Study, Mahesh Gupta

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

The World Wide Web today has evolved into a rich repository of entities where many knowledge bases containing entity-related information are directly available. Such knowledge bases are often in the form of entity-relationship graphs. To query entity-relationship graphs, users need to provide input entities, attributes and relationships by complex query graphs. To improve the usability of graph database systems, we study a novel mechanism that queriesentity-relationship graphs by example tuples. It allows users to express a query in the form of one or more tuples consisting of entities. The underlying query system automatically builds aquery graph based on the example …
