Effect Of Applied Magnetic Field On Shock Boundary Layer Interaction, Ovais U. Khan, Alexandre Martin Jan 2012

Effect Of Applied Magnetic Field On Shock Boundary Layer Interaction, Ovais U. Khan, Alexandre Martin

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The governing magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) equations contain classical fluid dynamics equations along with coupled Maxwell’s magnetic induction equations. These equations model both advection and diffusion effects of electromagnetic field. However, available literature indicates that some previous investigations neglect the diffusion of magnetic field and considered only ideal MHD equations for modeling a typical MHD problem. In this work, the effects of magnetic field diffusion term also known as viscous magnetic term have been investigated over flow structure. Low magnetic Reynolds number approximation and ideal full MHD set of equations have been considered and solved using a four-stage modified Runge-Kutta scheme augmented …

A Formal Architecture Of Shared Mental Models For Computational Improvisational Agents, Rania Hodhod Jan 2012

A Formal Architecture Of Shared Mental Models For Computational Improvisational Agents, Rania Hodhod

Faculty Bibliography

This paper proposes a formal approach of constructing shared mental models between computational improvisational agents (improv agents) and human interactors based on our socio-cognitive studies of human improvisers. Creating shared mental models helps improv agents co-create stories with each other and interactors in real-time interactive narrative experiences. The approach described here allows flexible modeling of non-Boolean (i.e. fuzzy) knowledge about scene and background concepts through the use of fuzzy rules and confidence factors in order to allow reasoning under uncertainty. It also allows improv agents to infer new knowledge about a scene from existing knowledge, recognize when new knowledge may …

Reaching Cognitive Consensus With Improvisational Agents, Rania Hodhod Jan 2012

Reaching Cognitive Consensus With Improvisational Agents, Rania Hodhod

Faculty Bibliography

A common approach to interactive narrative involves imbuing the computer with all of the potential story pre- authored story experiences (e.g. as beats, plot points, planning operators, etc.). This has resulted in an accepted paradigm where stories are not created by or with the user; rather, the user is given piecemeal access to the story from the gatekeeper of story knowledge: the computer (e.g. as an AI drama manager). This article describes a formal process that provides for the equal co-creation of story-rich experiences, where neither the user nor computer is in a privileged position in an interactive narrative. It …

Testing The Effectiveness Of Lecture Capture Technology Using Prior Gpa As A Performance Indicator, Michael D. Stroup, Michael M. Pickard, Korey E. Kahler Jan 2012

Testing The Effectiveness Of Lecture Capture Technology Using Prior Gpa As A Performance Indicator, Michael D. Stroup, Michael M. Pickard, Korey E. Kahler

Faculty Publications

This empirical study examines whether making lecture capture technology available in a face-to-face lecture environment can improve students’ ability to learn the course material. We examine student performance in undergraduate principles courses in computer science and economics. However, rather than simply comparing average course grades between lecture capture and non-lecture capture classes, we use student grade point average (GPA) as a predictor of course grades earned in non-lecture capture classes and lecture capture classes taught by the same professors using the same course materials. Our results imply that making lecture capture technology available in face-to-face lectures does not appear to …

Down-Weighting Overlapping Genes Improves Gene Set Analysis, Adi Tarca, Sorin Draghici, Gaurav Bhatti, Roberto Romero Jan 2012

Down-Weighting Overlapping Genes Improves Gene Set Analysis, Adi Tarca, Sorin Draghici, Gaurav Bhatti, Roberto Romero

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

Background

The identification of gene sets that are significantly impacted in a given condition based on microarray data is a crucial step in current life science research. Most gene set analysis methods treat genes equally, regardless how specific they are to a given gene set.

Results

In this work we propose a new gene set analysis method that computes a gene set score as the mean of absolute values of weighted moderated gene t-scores. The gene weights are designed to emphasize the genes appearing in few gene sets, versus genes that appear in many gene sets. We demonstrate the …

A Natural Language Interface Plug-In For Cooperative Query Answering In Biological Databases, Hasan M. Jamil Jan 2012

A Natural Language Interface Plug-In For Cooperative Query Answering In Biological Databases, Hasan M. Jamil

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

Background

One of the many unique features of biological databases is that the mere existence of a ground data item is not always a precondition for a query response. It may be argued that from a biologist's standpoint, queries are not always best posed using a structured language. By this we mean that approximate and flexible responses to natural language like queries are well suited for this domain. This is partly due to biologists' tendency to seek simpler interfaces and partly due to the fact that questions in biology involve high level concepts that are open to interpretations computed …

Parametric Pseudo-Manifolds, Jean Gallier, Dianna Xu, Marcelo Siqueira Jan 2012

Parametric Pseudo-Manifolds, Jean Gallier, Dianna Xu, Marcelo Siqueira

Computer Science Faculty Research and Scholarship

We introduce a novel and constructive definition of gluing data, and give the first rigorous proof that a universal manifold satisfying the Hausdorff condition can always be constructed from any set of gluing data. We also present a class of spaces called parametric pseudo-manifolds, which under certain conditions, are manifolds embedded in Rn and defined from sets of gluing data. We give a construction for building a set of gluing data from any simplicial surface in R3. This construction is an improvement of the construction given in Siqueira et al. (2009), where the results were stated without …

Privacy-Preserving Data Sharing In High Dimensional Regression And Classification Settings, Stephen E. Fienberg, Jiashun Jin Jan 2012

Privacy-Preserving Data Sharing In High Dimensional Regression And Classification Settings, Stephen E. Fienberg, Jiashun Jin

LARC Research Publications

We focus on the problem of multi-party data sharing in high dimensional data settings where the number of measured features (or the dimension) p is frequently much larger than the number of subjects (or the sample size) n, the so-called p>> n scenario that has been the focus of much recent statistical research. Here, we consider data sharing for two interconnected problems in high dimensional data analysis, namely the feature selection and classification. We characterize the notions of “cautious", “regular", and “generous" data sharing in terms of their privacy-preserving implications for the parties and their share of data, with focus …

Achieving Both Valid And Secure Logistic Regression Analysis On Aggregated Data From Different Private Sources, Yuval Nardi, Stephen Fienberg, Robert J. Hall Jan 2012

Achieving Both Valid And Secure Logistic Regression Analysis On Aggregated Data From Different Private Sources, Yuval Nardi, Stephen Fienberg, Robert J. Hall

LARC Research Publications

Preserving the privacy of individual databases when carrying out statistical calculations has a relatively long history in statistics and had been the focus of much recent attention in machine learning. In this paper, we present a protocol for fitting a logistic regression when the data are held by separate parties - without actually combining information sources - by exploiting results from the literature on multi-party secure computation. Our protocol provides only the final result of the calculation compared with other methods that share intermediate values and thus present an opportunity for compromise of values in the individual databases. Our paper …

Weighted-Sequence Problem: Asp Vs Casp And Declarative Vs Problem-Oriented Solving, Yuliya Lierler, Shaden Smith Jan 2012

Weighted-Sequence Problem: Asp Vs Casp And Declarative Vs Problem-Oriented Solving, Yuliya Lierler, Shaden Smith

Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Search problems with large variable domains pose a challenge to current answer-set programming (ASP) systems as large variable domains make grounding take a long time, and lead to large ground theories that may make solving infeasible. To circumvent the “grounding bottleneck” researchers proposed to integrate constraint solving techniques with ASP in an approach called constraint ASP (CASP). In the paper, we evaluate an ASP system clingo and a CASP system clingcon on a handcrafted problem involving large integer domains that is patterned after the database task of determining the optimal join order. We find that search methods used by clingo …

Semantics Of Perception: Towards A Semantic Web Approach To Machine Perception, Cory Andrew Henson, Amit P. Sheth Jan 2012

Semantics Of Perception: Towards A Semantic Web Approach To Machine Perception, Cory Andrew Henson, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

The acts of observation and perception provide the building blocks for all human knowledge (Locke, 1690); they are the processes from which all ideas are born; and the sole bond connecting ourselves to the world around us. Now, with the advent of sensor networks capable of observation, this world may be directly accessible to machines. Missing from this vision, however, is the ability of machines to glean semantics from observation; to apprehend entities from detected qualities; to perceive. The systematic automation of this ability is the focus of machine perception -- the ability of computing machines to sense and interpret …

How Is M&S Interoperability Different From Other Interoperability Domains?, Andreas Tolk, Saikou Y. Diallo, Jose J. Padilla, Charles D. Turnitsa

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

During every standard workshop or event, the examples of working interoperability solutions are used to motivate for 'plug and play' standards for M&S as well, like standardized batteries for electronics, or the use of XML to exchange data between heterogeneous systems. While these are successful applications of standards, they are off the mark regarding M&S interoperability. The challenge of M&S is that the product that needs to be made interoperable is not the service or the system alone, but the model behind it as well. The paper shows that the alignment of conceptualizations is the real problem that is not …
