Mediatability: Estimating The Degree Of Human Involvement In Xml Schema Mediation, Karthik Gomadam, Ajith Harshana Ranabahu, Lakshmish Ramaswamy, Amit P. Sheth, Kunal Verma

Kno.e.sis Publications

Mediation and integration of data are significant challenges because the number of services on the Web, and heterogeneities in their data representation, continue to increase rapidly. To address these challenges we introduce a new measure, mediatability, which is a quantifiable and computable metric for the degree of human involvement in XML schema mediation. We present an efficient algorithm to compute mediatability and an experimental study to analyze how semantic annotations affect the ease of mediating between two schemas. We validate our approach by comparing mediatability scores generated by our system with user-perceived difficulty. We also evaluate the scalability of our …

An Xml-Based Approach To Handling Tables In Documents, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Trivikram Immaneni Aug 2008

An Xml-Based Approach To Handling Tables In Documents, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Trivikram Immaneni

Kno.e.sis Publications

We explore application of XML technology for handling tables in legacy semi-structured documents. Specifically, we analyze annotating heterogeneous documents containing tables to obtain a formalized XML Master document that improves traceability (hence easing verification and update) and enables manipulation using XSLT stylesheets. This approach is useful when table instances far outnumber distinct table types because the effort required to annotate a table instance is relatively less compared to formalizing table processing that respects table’s semantics. This work is also relevant for authoring new documents with tables that should be accessible to both humans and machines.

Applications Of Voting Theory To Information Mashups, Alfredo Alba, Varun Bhagwan, Julia Grace, Daniel Gruhl, Kevin Haas, Meenakshi Nagarajan, Jan Pieper, Christine Robson, Nachiketa Sahoo

Kno.e.sis Publications

Blogs, discussion forums and social networking sites are an excellent source for people's opinions on a wide range of topics. We examine the application of voting theory to "information mashups" - the combining and summarizing of data from the multitude of often-conflicting sources. This paper presents an information mashup in the music domain: a Top 10 artist chart based on user comments and listening behavior from several Web communities. We consider different voting systems as algorithms to combine opinions from multiple sources and evaluate their effectiveness using social welfare functions. Different voting schemes are found to work better in some …

Pointcut Rejuvenation: Recovering Pointcut Expressions In Evolving Aspect-Oriented Software, Raffi Khatchadourian, Phil Greenwood, Awais Rashid, Guoqing Harry Xu Aug 2008

Pointcut Rejuvenation: Recovering Pointcut Expressions In Evolving Aspect-Oriented Software, Raffi Khatchadourian, Phil Greenwood, Awais Rashid, Guoqing Harry Xu

Publications and Research

Pointcut fragility is a well-documented problem in Aspect-Oriented Programming; changes to the base-code can lead to join points incorrectly falling in or out of the scope of pointcuts. In this paper, we present an automated approach which limits fragility problems by providing mechanical assistance in pointcut maintenance. The approach is based on harnessing arbitrarily deep structural commonalities between program elements corresponding to join points selected by a pointcut. The extracted patterns are then applied to later versions to offer suggestions of new join points that may require inclusion. To illustrate that the motivation behind our proposal is well-founded, we first …

Classification In P2p Networks By Bagging Cascade Rsvms, Hock Hee Ang, Vikvekanand Gopalkrishnan, Steven C. H. Hoi, Wee Keong Ng, Anwitaman Datta

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Data mining tasks in P2P are bound by issues like scalability, peer dynamism, asynchronism, and data privacy preservation. These challenges pose difficulties for deploying conventional machine learning techniques in P2P networks, which may be hard to achieve classification accuracies comparable to regular centralized solutions. We recently investigated the classification problem in P2P networks and proposed a novel P2P classification approach by cascading Reduced Support Vector Machines (RSVM). Although promising results were obtained, the existing solution has some drawback of redundancy in both communication and computation. In this paper, we present a new approach to over the limitation of the previous …

Impacts Of Social Network Structure On Knowledge Sharing In Open Source Software Development Teams, Y. Long, Keng Siau Aug 2008

Impacts Of Social Network Structure On Knowledge Sharing In Open Source Software Development Teams, Y. Long, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The study examines the relationship between social network structure and knowledge sharing in Open Source Software (OSS) development teams. One hundred and fifty projects were selected from SourceForge.net using stratified sampling. Social network structure was measured by two indices: degree of centralization and core/periphery fitness. Knowledge sharing was measured from two aspects: the quality of knowledge sharing that is indicated by the helpfulness of messages and the quantity of knowledge sharing that is indicated by the number of messages. The results show that social network structure significantly affects the quantity of knowledge sharing. However, social network structure does not influence …

Mining Patterns And Rules For Software Specification Discovery, David Lo, Siau-Cheng Khoo Aug 2008

Mining Patterns And Rules For Software Specification Discovery, David Lo, Siau-Cheng Khoo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Software specifications are often lacking, incomplete and outdated in the industry. Lack and incomplete specifications cause various software engineering problems. Studies have shown that program comprehension takes up to 45% of software development costs. One of the root causes of the high cost is the lack-of documented specification. Also, outdated and incomplete specification might potentially cause bugs and compatibility issues. In this paper, we describe novel data mining techniques to mine or reverse engineer these specifications from the pool of software engineering data. A large amount of software data is available for analysis. One form of software data is program …

The Pricing Strategy Analysis For The Software-As-A-Service Business Model, Dan Ma, Abraham Seidmann

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model is a novel way of delivering software applications. In this paper, we present an analytical model to study the competition between the SaaS and the traditional COTS (Commercial off-the-shelf) software. The main research goal is to analyze the pricing strategy of the SaaS in a competitive setting. The model captures the most salient differences between the SaaS and COTS, including their distinct pricing structures, user initial setup costs, system customization levels, and delivery channels. We find that the two could coexist in a competitive market in the long run, and more importantly, we show how the …

Supporting Collaboration In Mobile Environments, Rohan Sen

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Continued rapid improvements in the hardware capabilities of mobile computing devices is driving a parallel need for a paradigm shift in software design for such devices with the aim of ushering in new classes of software applications for devices of the future. One such class of software application is collaborative applications that seem to reduce the burden and overhead of collaborations on human users by providing automated computational support for the more mundane and mechanical aspects of a cooperative effort. This dissertation addresses the research and software engineering questions associated with building a workflow-based collaboration system that can operate across …

Relationship Preserving Auction For Repeated E-Procurement, Park J., Lee J., Lau H. Aug 2008

Relationship Preserving Auction For Repeated E-Procurement, Park J., Lee J., Lau H.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

While e-procurement auction has helped firms to achieve lower procurement costs, auction mechanisms that prevail at present in procurement markets need to address an important issue that concerns the ability to maintain long term relationships with the partners, especially in repeated e-procurement settings. In this paper, we propose a Relationship Preserving Auction (RPA) mechanism that augments the conventional auction mechanism with a bidder relationship scoring model. Our proposed mechanism gives increased chances of winning to the bidders who have bidden at relatively competitive price but had comparatively less wins so far. Keeping these bidders in the auction over time will …

Knowledge Transfer Via Multiple Model Local Structure Mapping, Jing Gao, Wei Fan, Jing Jiang, Jiawei Han Aug 2008

Knowledge Transfer Via Multiple Model Local Structure Mapping, Jing Gao, Wei Fan, Jing Jiang, Jiawei Han

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The effectiveness of knowledge transfer using classification algorithms depends on the difference between the distribution that generates the training examples and the one from which test examples are to be drawn. The task can be especially difficult when the training examples are from one or several domains different from the test domain. In this paper, we propose a locally weighted ensemble framework to combine multiple models for transfer learning, where the weights are dynamically assigned according to a model's predictive power on each test example. It can integrate the advantages of various learning algorithms and the labeled information from multiple …

Authenticating The Query Results Of Text Search Engines, Hwee Hwa Pang, Kyriakos Mouratidis Aug 2008

Authenticating The Query Results Of Text Search Engines, Hwee Hwa Pang, Kyriakos Mouratidis

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The number of successful attacks on the Internet shows that it is very difficult to guarantee the security of online search engines. A breached server that is not detected in time may return incorrect results to the users. To prevent that, we introduce a methodology for generating an integrity proof for each search result. Our solution is targeted at search engines that perform similarity-based document retrieval, and utilize an inverted list implementation (as most search engines do). We formulate the properties that define a correct result, map the task of processing a text search query to adaptations of existing threshold-based …

Simulating A Smartboard By Real-Time Gesture Detection In Lecture Videos, Feng Wang, Chong-Wah Ngo, Ting-Chuen Pong Aug 2008

Simulating A Smartboard By Real-Time Gesture Detection In Lecture Videos, Feng Wang, Chong-Wah Ngo, Ting-Chuen Pong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Gesture plays an important role for recognizing lecture activities in video content analysis. In this paper, we propose a real-time gesture detection algorithm by integrating cues from visual, speech and electronic slides. In contrast to the conventional "complete gesture" recognition, we emphasize detection by the prediction from "incomplete gesture". Specifically, intentional gestures are predicted by the modified hidden Markov model (HMM) which can recognize incomplete gestures before the whole gesture paths are observed. The multimodal correspondence between speech and gesture is exploited to increase the accuracy and responsiveness of gesture detection. In lecture presentation, this algorithm enables the on-the-fly editing …

Hierarchical Inter-Object Traces For Specification Mining, David Lo, Shahar Maoz Aug 2008

Hierarchical Inter-Object Traces For Specification Mining, David Lo, Shahar Maoz

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Major challenges of dynamic analysis approaches to specification mining include scalability over long traces as well as comprehensibility and expressivity of results. We present a novel use of object hierarchies over inter-object traces as an abstraction/refinement mechanism enabling scalable, incremental, top-down mining of scenario-based specifications.

Integrating Lightweight Systems Analysis Into The Unified Process By Using Service Responsibility Tables, X. Tan, S. Alter, Keng Siau Aug 2008

Integrating Lightweight Systems Analysis Into The Unified Process By Using Service Responsibility Tables, X. Tan, S. Alter, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper is a step toward establishing direct, but non-automatic links between lightweight (semi-formal) analysis methods for business professionals and heavyweight analysis methods for IT professionals. After noting the importance of user involvement in obtaining accurate and meaningful user requirements, the paper summarizes the Unified Process, a software development methodology that employs Unified Modeling Language (UML). Another section in the paper summarizes previous extensions of the work system method that produced a lightweight analysis tool called Service Responsibility Tables (SRTs). This paper uses a straightforward example to demonstrate a set of heuristics for translating between service responsibility tables produced by …

Watertight Trimmed Nurbs, Thomas W. Sederberg, Xin Li, Hongwei Lin, Heather Ipson Aug 2008

Watertight Trimmed Nurbs, Thomas W. Sederberg, Xin Li, Hongwei Lin, Heather Ipson

Faculty Publications

This paper addresses the long-standing problem of the unavoidable gaps that arise when expressing the intersection of two NURBS surfaces using conventional trimmed-NURBS representation. The solution converts each trimmed NURBS into an untrimmed T-Spline, and then merges the untrimmed T-Splines into a single, watertight model. The solution enables watertight fillets of NURBS models, as well as arbitrary feature curves that do not have to follow isoparameter curves. The resulting T-Spline representation can be exported without error as a collection of NURBS surfaces.

Learning Outcomes For A Business Information Systems Undergraduate Program, Joelle Elmaleh, Steven Miller, Paul S. Goodman

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present a learning outcomes framework for an Information Systems (IS) undergraduate program. This framework includes a supporting software application that goes beyond any other attempt reported to date to integrate learning outcomes into program-wide and course-wide curriculum development, ongoing curriculum redesign, and student learning support. The Learning Outcomes Management System (LOMS) described here is a first-of-a-kind information system created as part of implementing a program-wide learning outcomes framework in a university setting. Our learning outcomes framework is distinct in that 1) it is based on a three-level hierarchically structured definition of learning outcomes that consistently apply to both the …

A Lightweight Buyer-Seller Watermarking Protocol, Yongdong Wu, Hwee Hwa Pang Aug 2008

A Lightweight Buyer-Seller Watermarking Protocol, Yongdong Wu, Hwee Hwa Pang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The buyer-seller watermarking protocol enables a seller to successfully identify a traitor from a pirated copy, while preventing the seller from framing an innocent buyer. Based on finite field theory and the homomorphic property of public key cryptosystems such as RSA, several buyer-seller watermarking protocols (N. Memon and P. W. Wong (2001) and C.-L. Lei et al. (2004)) have been proposed previously. However, those protocols require not only large computational power but also substantial network bandwidth. In this paper, we introduce a new buyer-seller protocol that overcomes those weaknesses by managing the watermarks. Compared with the earlier protocols, ours is …

Real-Time Midi Performance Evaluation For Beginning Piano Students, David Duvall Jul 2008

Real-Time Midi Performance Evaluation For Beginning Piano Students, David Duvall

All Theses

MIDI is a standard digital protocol for the communication of musical events. In this paper, we examine the construction of a complex system to validate musical performance characteristics without compromising musical interpretation through the use and evaluation of MIDI messages. Beginning music students often have a difficult time translating written, musical characteristics to the correlating sound that they imply. Even though a teacher can effectively help a student through this learning process, the process can typically be slow, as evaluation of musical performances happens only once a week during a thirty minute lesson. Prior research has shown that a model, …

Perspective Models: A Mechanism For Achieving Interoperability Among Expressive, Personalized Domain Views, Kym J. Pohl, Jens G. Pohl Jul 2008

Perspective Models: A Mechanism For Achieving Interoperability Among Expressive, Personalized Domain Views, Kym J. Pohl, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

Accurate and expressive representation of the subject matter over which a context-oriented, decision-support system operates is fundamental to the effectiveness and longevity of the resulting solution. Often taking the form of an ontology, such extensive representational models, by their very nature, are rich in relationships and both coarse and fine-grained objects. It is, however, these qualities enabling rich expression that can significantly increase both the complexity of developing against these models as well as the potential for incurring undesirable performance issues. Further, due to the typically detail-oriented usage inherent in the software-based users (i.e., reasoning agents, etc.) of these models, …

Icodes: A Multi-Agent System In Practice, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

This paper describes the Integrated Computerized Deployment System (ICODES) from both an architectural and evolutionary vantage point.

First, ICODES is a logistic software application of ship load-planning tools that utilizes intelligent software agents in a human-computer collaborative mode. As an example of a new generation of intelligent military decision-support systems, ICODES includes expert agents with automatic reasoning and analysis capabilities. This is made possible by an internal virtual representation of the load-planning environment, in terms of conveyance and cargo characteristics and the complex relationships that constitute the context within which load-planning operations are performed. ICODES agents monitor the principal determinants …

Challenging Computer Software Frontiers And The Human Resistance To Change, Jens G. Pohl Jul 2008

Challenging Computer Software Frontiers And The Human Resistance To Change, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

This paper examines the driving and opposing forces that are governing the current paradigm shift from a data-processing information technology environment without software intelligence to an information-centric environment in which data changes are automatically interpreted within the context of the application domain. The driving forces are related to the large quantity of data and the complexity of networked systems that both call for software intelligence. The opposing forces are non-technical and due to the natural human resistance to change.

Based on this background the paper describes current information-centric technology, proposes a vision of intelligent software system capabilities, and identifies four …

Predicting The Longevity Of Dvdr Media By Periodic Analysis Of Parity, Jitter, And Ecc Performance Parameters, Daniel Patrick Wells Jul 2008

Predicting The Longevity Of Dvdr Media By Periodic Analysis Of Parity, Jitter, And Ecc Performance Parameters, Daniel Patrick Wells

Theses and Dissertations

For the last ten years, DVD-R media have played an important role in the storage of large amounts of digital data throughout the world. During this time it was assumed that the DVD-R was as long-lasting and stable as its predecessor, the CD-R. Several reports have surfaced over the last few years questioning the DVD-R's ability to maintain many of its claims regarding archival quality life spans. These reports have shown a wide range of longevity between the different brands. While some DVD-Rs may last a while, others may result in an early and unexpected failure. Compounding this problem is …

Simple, Secure, Selective Delegation In Online Identify Systems, Bryant Gordon Cutler Jul 2008

Simple, Secure, Selective Delegation In Online Identify Systems, Bryant Gordon Cutler

Theses and Dissertations

The ability to delegate privileges to others is so important to users of online identity systems that users create ad hoc delegation systems by sharing authentication credentials if no other easy delegation mechanism is available. With the rise of internet-scale relationship-based single sign-on protocols like OpenID, the security risks of password sharing are unacceptable. We therefore propose SimpleAuth, a simple modification to relationship-based authentication protocols that gives users a secure way to selectively delegate subsets of their privileges, making identity systems more flexible and increasing user security. We also present a proof-of-concept implementation of the SimpleAuth pattern using the sSRP …
