Analysis, Instrumentation, And Visualization Of Embedded Network Systems: A Testbed-Based Approach, Andrew Dalton Aug 2008

Analysis, Instrumentation, And Visualization Of Embedded Network Systems: A Testbed-Based Approach, Andrew Dalton

All Dissertations

Embedded network systems are gaining adoption and emerging as the next step in the shift toward ubiquitous computing. Deployments range in scale from tens of devices to over a thousand; applications can be massively parallel and distributed, executing over unreliable links and devices. The programming model used to develop these systems is fundamentally different than the models provided by traditional imperative programming languages; many existing software engineering tools and techniques cannot be applied. In particular, the lack of tools and techniques to analyze, instrument, and visualize these systems make their development more difficult.
We present a framework to …

Autonomous And Intelligent Radio Switching, Quiyi Duan Aug 2008

Autonomous And Intelligent Radio Switching, Quiyi Duan

Theses and Dissertations

With the proliferation of mobile applications and the abundance of wireless devices, it is increasingly common for devices to support multiple radios. When two devices are communicating they should choose the best available radio based on user preference and application requirements. This type of “radio switching” should happen automatically, so that the system optimizes performance dynamically. To achieve this objective, we design an Autonomous and Intelligent Radio Switching (AIRS) system to leverage the radio heterogeneity common in today's wireless devices. The AIRS system consists of three key components. First, we design a radio preference evaluation module to dynamically select the …

An Infrastructure For Performance Measurement And Comparison Of Information Retrieval Solutions, Gary Saunders Aug 2008

An Infrastructure For Performance Measurement And Comparison Of Information Retrieval Solutions, Gary Saunders

Theses and Dissertations

The amount of information available on both public and private networks continues to grow at a phenomenal rate. This information is contained within a wide variety of objects, including documents, e-mail archives, medical records, manuals, pictures and music. To be of any value, this data must be easily searchable and accessible. Information Retrieval (IR) is concerned with the ability to find and gain access to relevant information. As electronic data repositories continue to proliferate, so too, grows the variety of methods used to locate and access the information contained therein. Similarly, the introduction of innovative retrieval strategies—and the optimization of …

Duts: Targeted Case Studies, Hui Nee Chin, Sebastian Elbaum, Matthew B. Dwyer, Matthew Jorde Aug 2008

Duts: Targeted Case Studies, Hui Nee Chin, Sebastian Elbaum, Matthew B. Dwyer, Matthew Jorde

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Our previous studies of DUTs addressed research questions of effectiveness, efficiency, and robustness with respect to one software artifact, Siena, and we believe the findings generalize to similar artifacts. Still, we realize that existing studies suffer from threats to validity. Specifically, the selected artifact provided limited exposure to CR in the presence of deeper heap structures, extensive software changes, and high number of methods invocations. We start to address those threats to the validity of our findings by investigating the performance of CR in the presence of such settings.
The findings in this report reveal that the performance of the …

Multi-Class Classification For Identifying Jpeg Steganography Embedding Methods, Benjamin M. Rodriguez Ii Aug 2008

Multi-Class Classification For Identifying Jpeg Steganography Embedding Methods, Benjamin M. Rodriguez Ii

Theses and Dissertations

Over 725 steganography tools are available over the Internet, each providing a method for covert transmission of secret messages. This research presents four steganalysis advancements that result in an algorithm that identifies the steganalysis tool used to embed a secret message in a JPEG image file. The algorithm includes feature generation, feature preprocessing, multi-class classification and classifier fusion. The first contribution is a new feature generation method which is based on the decomposition of discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients used in the JPEG image encoder. The generated features are better suited to identifying discrepancies in each area of the decomposed …

On Autonomous Multi-Agent Control In Wilderness Search And Rescue: A Mixed Initiative Approach, Benjamin C. Hardin Aug 2008

On Autonomous Multi-Agent Control In Wilderness Search And Rescue: A Mixed Initiative Approach, Benjamin C. Hardin

Theses and Dissertations

Searching for lost people in a Wilderness Search and Rescue (WiSAR) scenario is a task that can benefit from large numbers of agents, some of whom may be robotic. These agents may have differing levels of autonomy, determined by the set of tasks they are performing. In addition, the level of autonomy that results in the best performance may change due to varying workload or other factors. Allowing a supervisor and a searcher to jointly decide the correct level of autonomy for a given situation (“mixed initiative”) results in better overall performance than giving an agent absolute control over their …

We developed a novel analytical environment to aid in the examination of the extensive amount of interconnected data available for genome projects. Our focus is to enable flexibility and abstraction from implementation details, while retaining the expressivity required for post-genomic research. To achieve this goal, we associated genomics data to ontologies and implemented a query formulation and execution environment with added visualization capabilities. We use ontology schemas to guide the user through the process of building complex queries in a flexible Web interface. Queries are serialized in SPARQL and sent to servers via Ajax. A component for visualization of the …

Automated Code Generation For Industrial-Strength Systems, Thomas Weigert, Frank Weil, Aswin Van Den Berg, Paul Dietz, Kevin Marth

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Model-driven engineering proposes to develop software systems by first creating an executable model of the system design and then transforming this model into an implementation. This paper discusses the design of an automatic code generation system that transforms such models into product implementations for highly reliable, industrial-strength systems. It provides insights, practical considerations, and lessons learned when developing code generators for applications that must conform to the constraints imposed by real-world, high-performance systems. Automatic code generation has played a large part in dramatically increasing both the quality and the reliability of software for these systems.

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

As XML becomes a standard for communications between distributed heterogeneous machines, many schools plan to implement Web Services systems using the XML e-transcript (electronic transcript) standard. We propose a framework that supports both XML e-transcript Web Services and existing EDI e-transcript systems. The framework uses the workflow engine to exploit the benefits of workflow management mechanisms. The workflow engine manages the e-transcript business process by enacting and completing the tasks and sub-processes within the main business process. We implemented the proposed framework by using various open source projects including Java, Eclipse, and Apache Software Foundation’s Web Services projects. Compared with …

Service Oriented Transitive Closure Solution, Jonathan Baran

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The goal of this project is a service based solution that utilizes parallel and distributed processing algorithms to solve the transitive closure problem for a large dataset. A dataset may be view conceptually as a table in a database, with a physical structure representing a file containing a sequence of records and fields. Two records are said to be transitively related if and only if they are directly related due to sharing of one or more specific fields, or a sequence may be made from one record to the other under the condition that all intermediate entries are related the …

Scalable Medium Access Control For In-Network Data Aggregation, Jamie Macbeth, Majid Sarrafzadeh Aug 2008

Scalable Medium Access Control For In-Network Data Aggregation, Jamie Macbeth, Majid Sarrafzadeh

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We present conflict-free and contention-based medium access control (MAC) protocols designed for resource-aware data collection in sensor networks. We are interested in the performance of these schemes when used in in-network data aggregation systems. We introduce a Listen-and-Suppress (LAS) MAC protocol paradigm which can conserve network and node resources and cut delays through the interaction between the constituent nodes. In LAS-TDMA and LASCSMA, nodes listen to the channel and suppress their transmissions and sleep if their data is not needed. Under these conditions, we compare conflict-free scheduling and random scheduling in a general setting along several performance metrics. We find …

The introduction of sensitive and fast electronic imaging devices and the development of biological methods to tag proteins of interest by green fluorescent proteins (GFP) have made a full understanding of live cell dynamics achievable. With the latest hardware technology, such as high speed laser scanning confocal Microscopy (LSCM), it has now become critical to develop automatic quantitative data analysis tools to keep pace with and to fully exploit the functionalities of state-of-the-art hardware. One task of such tools is the motility analysis of subcellular structures. This dissertation provides a series of computational approaches for studying subcellular structure motility. Firstly, …

Connectionist Model Generation: A First-Order Approach, Sebastian Bader, Pascal Hitzler, Steffen Holldobler Aug 2008

Connectionist Model Generation: A First-Order Approach, Sebastian Bader, Pascal Hitzler, Steffen Holldobler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Knowledge-based artificial neural networks have been applied quite successfully to propositional knowledge representation and reasoning tasks. However, as soon as these tasks are extended to structured objects and structure-sensitive processes as expressed e.g., by means of first-order predicate logic, it is not obvious at all what neural-symbolic systems would look like such that they are truly connectionist, are able to learn, and allow for a declarative reading and logical reasoning at the same time. The core method aims at such an integration. It is a method for connectionist model generation using recurrent networks with feed-forward core. We show in this …

Enhanced Bioinformatics Data Modeling Concepts And Their Use In Querying And Integration, Feng Ji Aug 2008

Enhanced Bioinformatics Data Modeling Concepts And Their Use In Querying And Integration, Feng Ji

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

In bioinformatics research, scientists usually face the problems of modeling complex data types and integrating diverse resources. Traditional data models such as EER lack the expressing power to capture many characteristics that are common in bioinformatics data. We first propose extensions to the ER model that allow accurate representation of many of these characteristics. We then utilize these concepts in an integrative system to provide an easy-to-use interface for biologists to construct queries. Our research utilizes the enhanced conceptual modeling concepts to create a prototype mediator for querying multiple data sources. The various relationships between different biological entities are all …

Location Privacy In Sensor Networks Against A Global Eavesdropper, Kiran K. Mehta Aug 2008

Location Privacy In Sensor Networks Against A Global Eavesdropper, Kiran K. Mehta

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

While many protocols for sensor network security provide con dentiality for the content of messages, contextual information usually remains exposed. Such contextual information can be exploited by an adversary to derive sensitive information such as the locations of monitored objects and data sinks in the eld. Attacks on these components can signi cantly undermine network applications. The existing techniques defend the leakage of location information only from an adversary who sees only local network tra c. However, a stronger adversary, the global eavesdrop- per, is realistic and can defeat all existing techniques. This paper rst formalizes the location privacy issues …

Automated Integration Of Biomedical Information For The Support Of Genome-Wide Association Studies, Abhijit R. Tendulkar

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Genome-wide association studies of the genetic underpinnings of complex phenotypes, and human diseases in particular, have been steadily gaining momentum over the past several years. Yet, the number of polymorphic sites in the human genome, including, but not limited to, Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) is so large that identifying the combination of these few which have a significant effect on the condition of interest remains an overwhelming task. The goal of this thesis work was to identify biologically and medically relevant SNPs which could be the best possible candidates for further association studies. In this thesis we present a new …

Congestion Control For Networks In Challenged Environments, Guohua Zhang Aug 2008

Congestion Control For Networks In Challenged Environments, Guohua Zhang

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Congestion occurs when resource demands exceed the capacity of a network. The goal of congestion control is to use the network as efficiently as possible. While extensive efforts have been devoted to providing optimization based, distributed congestion control schemes for efficient bandwidth utilization and fair allocation in the Internet and wireless networks, little consideration was given to congestion control for networks in challenged environments, specifically for networks with time-varying link capacities and networks that intermittently communicate. In this dissertation, we explore optimal congestion control strategies for such networks based on optimization techniques and repeated game theory. For networks with time …

The Dynamics Of Salsa: A Structured Approach To Large-Scale Anonymity, Safwan Mahmud Khan Aug 2008

The Dynamics Of Salsa: A Structured Approach To Large-Scale Anonymity, Safwan Mahmud Khan

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Anonymity provides a technical solution for protecting one's online privacy. Highly distributed peer-to-peer (P2P) anonymous systems should have better distribution of trust and more scalability than centralized approaches, but existing systems are vulnerable to attacks as they require nodes to have global knowledge of the system. To overcome these problems and to provide more secure, distributed organization for P2P anonymity systems, prior work proposed the Salsa system. Salsa is designed to select nodes to be used in anonymous circuits randomly from the full set of nodes, even though each node has knowledge of only a small subset of the network. …

Mutual Information Based Non-Rigid Image Registration Using Adaptive Grid Generation: Gpu Implementation And Application To Breast Mri, Mei Yi Chu Aug 2008

Mutual Information Based Non-Rigid Image Registration Using Adaptive Grid Generation: Gpu Implementation And Application To Breast Mri, Mei Yi Chu

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

In this dissertation a new approach for non-rigid image registration using mutual information is introduced. A fast method for non-rigid registration is developed by adjusting divergence and curl of an intermediate vector field from which the deformation field is computed using finite difference method. The similarity measure mutual information is employed in the gradient-based cost minimization (or mutual information maximization) of the registration. The huge amount of data associated with MRI is handled by fully automated algorithm optimized with a multi-resolution topology preserving regridding scheme. The adaptive grid system naturally distributes more grids to deprived areas. The positive monitor function …

An Open Framework For Highly Concurrent Real-Time Hardware-In-The-Loop Simulation, Ryan C. Underwood, Bruce M. Mcmillin, Mariesa Crow

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) real-time simulation is becoming a significant tool in prototyping complex, highly available systems. The HIL approach permits testing of hardware prototypes of components that would be extremely costly or difficult to test in the deployed environment. In power system simulation, key issues are the ability to wrap the systems of equations (such as Partial Differential Equations) describing the deployed environment into real-time software models, provide low synchronization overhead between the hardware and software, and reduce reliance on proprietary platforms. This paper introduces an open source HIL simulation framework that can be ported to any standard Unix-like system on …

Twokind Authentication: Protecting Private Information In Untrustworthy Environments (Extended Version), Katelin Bailey, Apu Kapadia, Linden Vongsathorn, Sean W. Smith

Computer Science Technical Reports

We propose and evaluate TwoKind Authentication, a simple and effective technique that allows users to limit access to their private information in untrustworthy environments. Users often log in to Internet sites from insecure computers, and more recently have started divulging their email passwords to social-networking sites, thereby putting their private communications at risk. To mitigate this problem, we explore the use of multiple authenticators for the same account that are associated with specific sets of privileges. In its simplest form, TwoKind features two modes of authentication, a low and a high authenticator. By using a low authenticator, users can signal …

Sparse Representation Of High Dimensional Data For Classification, Salman Siddiqui Aug 2008

Sparse Representation Of High Dimensional Data For Classification, Salman Siddiqui

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

In this thesis we propose the use of sparse Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for representing high dimensional data for classification. Sparse transformation reduces the data volume/dimensionality without loss of critical information, so that it can be processed efficiently and assimilated by a human. We obtained sparse representation of high dimensional dataset using Sparse Principal Component Analysis (SPCA) and Direct formulation of Sparse Principal Component Analysis (DSPCA). Later we performed classification using k Nearest Neighbor (kNN) Method and compared its result with regular PCA. The experiments were performed on hyperspectral data and various datasets obtained from University of California, Irvine (UCI) …

Attribute-Based, Usefully Secure Email, Christopher P. Masone Aug 2008

Attribute-Based, Usefully Secure Email, Christopher P. Masone

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

A secure system that cannot be used by real users to secure real-world processes is not really secure at all. While many believe that usability and security are diametrically opposed, a growing body of research from the field of Human-Computer Interaction and Security (HCISEC) refutes this assumption. All researchers in this field agree that focusing on aligning usability and security goals can enable the design of systems that will be more secure under actual usage. We bring to bear tools from the social sciences (economics, sociology, psychology, etc.) not only to help us better understand why deployed systems fail, but …
