Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

G-Portal is a web portal system providing a range of digital library services to access geospatial and georeferenced resources on the Web. Among them are the storage and query subsystems that provide a central repository of metadata resources organized under different projects. In GPortal, all metadata resources are represented in XML (Extensible Markup Language) and they are compliant to some resource schemas de.ned by their creators. The resource schemas are extended versions of a basic resource schema making it easy to accommodate all kinds of metadata resources while maintaining the portability of resource data. To support queries over the geospatial …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A supply hub is a location generally close to a manufacturer’s facility where all or some of its supplies are warehoused with the agreement that the materials will be paid for only when consumed. Supply hub is an innovative strategy employed by especially the electronics industry to achieve cost reduction and improved responsiveness. After first tracing the developments leading to the establishment of supply hubs, the paper then describes the dynamics of the operation of supply hubs. Case examples are provided to highlight the current practices. Finally, some research issues are identified.

Tactics-Based Remote Execution For Mobile Computing, Rajesh Krishna Balan, Mahadev Satayanarayana, Soyoung Park, Tadashi Okoshi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Remote execution can transform the puniest mobile device into a computing giant able to run resource-intensive applications such as natural language translation, speech recognition, face recognition, and augmented reality. However, easily partitioning these applications for remote execution while retaining application-specific information has proven to be a difficult challenge. In this paper, we show that automated dynamic repartitioning of mobile applications can be reconciled with the need to exploit application-specific knowledge. We show that the useful knowledge about an application relevant to remote execution can be captured in a compact declarative form calledtactics. Tactics capture the full range of meaningful partitions …

On Machine Learning Methods For Chinese Document Classification, Ji He, Ah-Hwee Tan, Chew-Lim Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper reports our comparative evaluation of three machine learning methods, namely k Nearest Neighbor (kNN), Support Vector Machines (SVM), and Adaptive Resonance Associative Map (ARAM) for Chinese document categorization. Based on two Chinese corpora, a series of controlled experiments evaluated their learning capabilities and efficiency in mining text classification knowledge. Benchmark experiments showed that their predictive performance were roughly comparable, especially on clean and well organized data sets. While kNN and ARAM yield better performances than SVM on small and clean data sets, SVM and ARAM significantly outperformed kNN on noisy data. Comparing efficiency, kNN was notably more costly …

Efficient I/O For Computational Grid Applications, Ron A. Oldfield May 2003

Efficient I/O For Computational Grid Applications, Ron A. Oldfield

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

High-performance computing increasingly occurs on "computational grids" composed of heterogeneous and geographically distributed systems of computers, networks, and storage devices that collectively act as a single "virtual" computer. A key challenge in this environment is to provide efficient access to data distributed across remote data servers. This dissertation explores some of the issues associated with I/O for wide-area distributed computing and describes an I/O system, called Armada, with the following features: a framework to allow application and dataset providers to flexibly compose graphs of processing modules that describe the distribution, application interfaces, and processing required of the dataset before or …

Enabling Remote Access To Personal Electronic Medical Records, James K. Archibald, Eric S. Hall, Charles D. Knutson, David K. Vawdrey

Faculty Publications

Millions of people suffer from medical conditions that should be made known to healthcare practitioners prior to treatment. Paramedics and emergency room doctors cannot provide optimal care without sufficient knowledge of a patient’s medical history. Lacking patient information such as allergies, current prescriptions, and preexisting conditions, medical professionals are often forced to either delay treatment or rely on instincts. Medical mistakes in situations like these kill thousands of people and cost an estimated US$37 billion each year in the United States [1]. With the advent of electronic medical records (EMRs), patient information can be stored in computer databases at hospitals …

Model-Based Human-Centered Task Automation: A Case Study In Acc System Design, Michael A. Goodrich, Erwin R. Boer May 2003

Model-Based Human-Centered Task Automation: A Case Study In Acc System Design, Michael A. Goodrich, Erwin R. Boer

Faculty Publications

Engineers, business managers, and governments are increasingly aware of the importance and difficulty of integrating technology and humans. The presence of technology can enhance human comfort, efficiency, and safety, but the absence of human factors analysis can lead to uncomfortable, inefficient, and unsafe systems. Systematic human-centered design requires a basic understanding of how humans generate and manage tasks. A very useful model of human behavior generation can be obtained by recognizing the task-specific role of mental models in not only guiding execution of skills but also managing initiation and termination of these skills. By identifying the human operator’s mental models …

Concurrently Learning Neural Nets: Encouraging Optimal Behavior In Cooperative Reinforcement Learning Systems, Nancy Fulda, Dan A. Ventura May 2003

Concurrently Learning Neural Nets: Encouraging Optimal Behavior In Cooperative Reinforcement Learning Systems, Nancy Fulda, Dan A. Ventura

Faculty Publications

Reinforcement learning agents interacting in a common environment often fail to converge to optimal system behaviors even when the individual goals of the agents are fully compatible. Claus and Boutilier have demonstrated that the use of joint action learning helps to overcome these difficulties for Q-learning systems. This paper studies an application of joint action learning to systems of neural networks. Neural networks are a desirable candidate for such augmentations for two reasons: (1) they may be able to generalize more effectively than Q-learners, and (2) the network topology used may improve the scalability of joint action learning to systems …

A Performance-Driven Framework For Customizing Csp Middleware Support, Guoliang Xing Apr 2003

A Performance-Driven Framework For Customizing Csp Middleware Support, Guoliang Xing

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

A Distributed Constraint Satisfaction Problem (DCSP) aims to find consistent assignments of values to a set of variables distributed on multiple nodes. Despite its simple definition, DCSPs can model a broad variety of traditional artificial intelligence problems. Furthermore, many problems found in emerging sensor-actuator networks can be formalized to DCSPs. However, due to the platform limitations of networked embedded systems such as sensor-actuators networks, building real-world applications for solving DCSPs not only requires the improved DCSP algorithms but also novel system approaches. This thesis first develops a performance-driven middleware framework for solving DCSP problems. Then the prototype system built with …

Specialized Hardware Support For Dynamic Storage Allocation, Steven M. Donahue Apr 2003

Specialized Hardware Support For Dynamic Storage Allocation, Steven M. Donahue

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

With the advent of operating systems and programming languages that can evaluate and guarantee real-time specifications, applications with real-time requirements can be authored in higher-level languages. For example, a version of Java suitable for real-time (RTSJ) has recently reached the status of a reference implementation, and it is likely that other implementations will follow. Analysis to show the feasibility of a given set of tasks must take into account their worst-case execution time, including any storage allocation or deallocation associated with those tasks. In this thesis, we present a hardware-based solution to the problem of storage allocation and (explicit) deallocation …

Using Contaminated Garbage Collection And Reference Counting Garbage Collection To Provide Automatic Storage Reclamation For Real-Time Systems, Matthew P. Hampton Apr 2003

Using Contaminated Garbage Collection And Reference Counting Garbage Collection To Provide Automatic Storage Reclamation For Real-Time Systems, Matthew P. Hampton

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Language support of dynamic storage management simplifies the application programming task immensely. As a result, dynamic storage allocation and garbage collection have become common in general purpose computing. Garbage collection research has led to the development of algorithms for locating program memory that is no longer in use and returning the unused memory to the run-time system for late use by the program. While many programming languages have adopted automatic memory reclamation features, this has not been the trend in Real-Time systems. Many garbage collection methods involve some form of marking the objects in memory. This marking requires time proportional …

Hashtables For Real-Time And Embedded Systems, Anand Krishnan Apr 2003

Hashtables For Real-Time And Embedded Systems, Anand Krishnan

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Real-time are beginning to appear in advanced, high-level programming languages such as Java. When complemented by a real-time operating system, the Real-Time Specification for Java (RTSJ) offers strong execution constraints for applications developed in Java. While the RTSJ make the basic services of Java such as storage and thread management ready for many real-time applications, the collection objects, and the rest of the application run-time library, cannot be used by RTSJ applications until their run-time properties are examined and modified as necessary to make them suitable for use by real-time applications. In this work, we examine the Hashtable collection facility …

Dynamic Assignment Of Scoped Memory Regions In The Translation Of Java To Real-Time Java, Morgan G. Deters Apr 2003

Dynamic Assignment Of Scoped Memory Regions In The Translation Of Java To Real-Time Java, Morgan G. Deters

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Advances in middleware, operating systems, and popular, general-purpose languages have brought the ideal of reasonably-bound execution time closer to developers who need such assurances for real-time and embedded systems applications. Extensions to the Java libraries and virtual machine have been proposed in a real-time Java standard, which provides for specification of release times, execution costs, and deadlines for a restricted class of threads. To use such features, the programmer is required to use unwieldy code constructs to create region-like areas of storage, associate them with execution scopes, and allocate objects from them. Further, the developer must ensure that they do …

Integrated Coverage And Connectivity Configuration In Wireless Sensor Networks, Xiaorui Wang, Guoliang Xing, Yuanfang Zhang, Chenyang Lu, Robert Pless, Christopher Gill Apr 2003

Integrated Coverage And Connectivity Configuration In Wireless Sensor Networks, Xiaorui Wang, Guoliang Xing, Yuanfang Zhang, Chenyang Lu, Robert Pless, Christopher Gill

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

An effective approach for energy conservation in wireless sensor networks is scheduling sleep intervals for extraneous nodes, while the remaining nodes stay active to provide continuous service. For the sensor network to operate successfully, the active nodes must maintain both sensing coverage and network connectivity. Furthermore, the network must be able to configure itself to any feasible degrees of coverage and connectivity in order to support different applications and environments with diverse requirements. This paper presents the design and analysis of novel protocols that can dynamically configure a network to achieve guaranteed degrees of coverage and connectivity. This work differs …

Multiflow Tcp, Udp, Ip, And Atm Traffic Generation Module, Eliot I. Sinclair, John W. Lockwood Apr 2003

Multiflow Tcp, Udp, Ip, And Atm Traffic Generation Module, Eliot I. Sinclair, John W. Lockwood

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Networking devices must be capable of processing traffic flows from multiple sources. In order to verify that such devices operates properly, a network testbench can be used to inject traffic into the device. The specification of the traffic flows can be difficult. At the low level, there are header fields, data checksums, and packet length fields that all must be formatted correctly. Further, there can be multiple flows of traffic that will arrive simultaneously. It is desirable to specify traffic at a high level of abstraction. A software program can then be written to parse the specification and generate the …

The Online Median Problem, Ramgopal R. Mettu, C. Greg Plaxton Apr 2003

The Online Median Problem, Ramgopal R. Mettu, C. Greg Plaxton

Dartmouth Scholarship

We introduce a natural variant of the (metric uncapacitated) k-median problem that we call the online median problem. Whereas the k-median problem involves optimizing the simultaneous placement of k facilities, the online median problem imposes the following additional constraints: the facilities are placed one at a time, a facility cannot be moved once it is placed, and the total number of facilities to be placed, k, is not known in advance. The objective of an online median algorithm is to minimize the competitive ratio, that is, the worst-case ratio of the cost of an online placement to …

Protecting Sensitive Credential Content During Trust Negotiation, Ryan D. Jarvis Apr 2003

Protecting Sensitive Credential Content During Trust Negotiation, Ryan D. Jarvis

Theses and Dissertations

Keeping sensitive information private in a public world is a common concern to users of digital credentials. A digital credential may contain sensitive attributes certifying characteristics about its owner. X.509v3, the most widely used certificate standard, includes support for certificate extensions that make it possible to bind multiple attributes to a public key contained in the certificate. This feature, although convenient, potentially exploits the certificate holder's private information contained in the certificate. There are currently no privacy considerations in place to protect the disclosure of attributes in a certificate. This thesis focuses on protecting sensitive credential content during trust negotiation …

On Learning Of Functions Refutably, Sanjay Jain, Efim Kinber, Rolf Wiehagen, Thomas Zeugmann Apr 2003

On Learning Of Functions Refutably, Sanjay Jain, Efim Kinber, Rolf Wiehagen, Thomas Zeugmann

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

Learning of recursive functions refutably informally means that for every recursive function, the learning machine has either to learn this function or to refute it, that is to signal that it is not able to learn it. Three modi of making precise the notion of refuting are considered. We show that the corresponding types of learning refutably are of strictly increasing power, where already the most stringent of them turns out to be of remarkable topological and algorithmical richness. Furthermore, all these types are closed under union, though in different strengths. Also, these types are shown to be different with …
