Factors In The Design And Development Of A Data Warehouse For Academic Data., Margaret C. Lester May 2003

Factors In The Design And Development Of A Data Warehouse For Academic Data., Margaret C. Lester

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Data warehousing is a relatively new field in the realm of information technology, and current research centers primarily around data warehousing in business environments. As new as the field is in these environments, only recently have educational institutions begun to embark on data warehousing projects, and little research has been done regarding the special considerations and characteristics of academic data, and the complexity of analyzing such data. Educational institutions measure success very differently from business-oriented organizations, and the analyses that are meaningful in such environments pose very unique and intricate problems in data warehousing. This research describes the process of …

Healthcare Enterprise Process Development And Integration, Kemafor Anyanwu, Amit P. Sheth, Jorge Cardoso, John A. Miller, Krzysztof J. Kochut May 2003

Healthcare Enterprise Process Development And Integration, Kemafor Anyanwu, Amit P. Sheth, Jorge Cardoso, John A. Miller, Krzysztof J. Kochut

Kno.e.sis Publications

Healthcare enterprises involve complex processes that span diverse groups and organisations. These processes involve clinical and administrative tasks, large volumes of data, and large numbers of patients and personnel. The tasks can be performed either by humans or by automated systems. In the latter case, the tasks are supported by a variety of software applications and information systems which are very often heterogeneous, autonomous, and distributed. The development of systems to manage and automate these processes has increasingly played an important role in improving the efficiency of healthcare enterprises. In this paper we look at four healthcare and medical applications …

A Graphical Query Language For Object Oriented Databases, Ramiji Vandara May 2003

A Graphical Query Language For Object Oriented Databases, Ramiji Vandara

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

Object Oriented Database Management Systems(OOBMS)became popular in the mid-eighties, as a result of the sharply increased popularity of the object oriented programming languages. Many query languages for a number of OODB systems have been proposed, but most of them are similar, in spirit to SQL, which was designed for a relational database model. In an effort to emulate SQL functionality most of the new languages fail to exploit the fact that data in database is arranged intuitively in an OODB. The need for a more intuitive organization of data increased in recent years with the advent of more complex and …

Billiards Adviser As A Search In A Continuous Domain With Significant Uncertainty, Thomas Mueller May 2003

Billiards Adviser As A Search In A Continuous Domain With Significant Uncertainty, Thomas Mueller

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

Typical search algorithms are limited to problems in which there is a certain number of moves for any given state, and the effect of each move is well known. In order to overcome this limitation, we consider the problem of determining the optimal shot given the positions of balls on a billiards table. Our solution includes the image recognition necessary to determine each ball's position, the calculation of the optimal shot, and the presentation of that shot to the player. The focus of the paper is on the second part - determining the angle and force with which the player …

An Active Learning Approach To Efficiently Ranking Retrieval Engines, Lisa A. Torrey May 2003

An Active Learning Approach To Efficiently Ranking Retrieval Engines, Lisa A. Torrey

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

Evaluating retrieval systems, such as those submitted to the annual TREC competition, usually requires a large number of documents to be read and judged for relevance to query topics. Test collections are far too big to be exhaustively judged, so only a subset of documents is selected to form the judgment ``pool.'' The selection method that TREC uses produces pools that are still quite large. Research has indicated that it is possible to rank the retrieval systems correctly using substantially smaller pools. This paper introduces an active learning algorithm whose goal is to reach the correct rankings using the smallest …

Trusted S/Mime Gateways, Mindy J. Pereira May 2003

Trusted S/Mime Gateways, Mindy J. Pereira

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

The utility of Web-based email clients is clear: a user is able to access their email account from any computer anywhere at any time. However, this option is unavailable to users whose security depends on their key pair being stored either on their local computer or in their browser. Our implementation seeks to solve two problems with secure email services. The first that of mobility: users must have access to their key pairs in order to perform the necessary cryptographic operations. The second is one of transition: initially, users would not want to give up their regular email clients. Keeping …

Persistence And Prevalence In The Mobility Of Dartmouth Wireless Network Users, Clara Lee May 2003

Persistence And Prevalence In The Mobility Of Dartmouth Wireless Network Users, Clara Lee

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

Wireless local-area networks (WLANs) are increasing in popularity. As more people use WLANs it is important to understand how these users behave. We analyzed data collected over three months of 2002 to measure the persistence and prevalence of users of the Dartmouth wireless network.

We found that most of the users of Dartmouth's network have short association times and a high rate of mobility. This observation fits with the predominantly student population of Dartmouth College, because students do not have a fixed workplace and are moving to and from classes all day.

To access the content of digital texts efficiently, it is necessary to provide more sophisticated access than keyword based searching. GeneScene provides biomedical researchers with research findings and background relations automatically extracted from text and experimental data. These provide a more detailed overview of the information available. The extracted relations were evaluated by qualified researchers and are precise. A qualitative ongoing evaluation of the current online interface indicates that this method to search the literature is more useful and efficient than keyword based searching.

Ρ-Queries: Enabling Querying For Semantic Associations On The Semantic Web, Kemafor Anyanwu, Amit P. Sheth May 2003

Ρ-Queries: Enabling Querying For Semantic Associations On The Semantic Web, Kemafor Anyanwu, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

This paper presents the notion of Semantic Associations as complex relationships between resource entities. These relationships capture both a connectivity of entities as well as similarity of entities based on a specific notion of similarity called ρ-isomorphism. It formalizes these notions for the RDF data model, by introducing a notion of a Property Sequence as a type. In the context of a graph model such as that for RDF, Semantic Associations amount to specific certain graph signatures. Specifically, they refer to sequences (i.e. directed paths) here called Property Sequences, between entities, networks of Property Sequences (i.e. undirected paths), or subgraphs …

Exception Handling For Conflict Resolution In Cross-Organizational Workflows, Zongwei Luo, Amit P. Sheth, Krzysztof Kochut, I. Budak Arpinar May 2003

Exception Handling For Conflict Resolution In Cross-Organizational Workflows, Zongwei Luo, Amit P. Sheth, Krzysztof Kochut, I. Budak Arpinar

Kno.e.sis Publications

Workflow management systems (WfMSs) are being increasingly deployed to deliver e-business transactions across organizational boundaries. To ensure a high service quality in such transactions, exception-handling schemes for conflict resolution are needed. The conflicts primarily arise due to failure of a task in workflow execution because of underlying application, or controlling WfMS component failures or insufficient user input. So far, little progress has been reported in addressing conflict resolution in cross-organizational business processes, though its importance has been recognized. In this paper, we identify the exception handling techniques that support conflict resolution in cross-organizational settings. In particular, we propose a novel, …

Dvsst: A Dynamic Voltage Scaling Algorithm For Sporadic Tasks, Ala' Adel Qadi, Steve Goddard, Shane Farritor May 2003

Dvsst: A Dynamic Voltage Scaling Algorithm For Sporadic Tasks, Ala' Adel Qadi, Steve Goddard, Shane Farritor

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) algorithms save energy by scaling down the processor frequency when the processor is not fully loaded. Many algorithms have been proposed for periodic and aperiodic task models but none support the canonical sporadic task model. A DVS algorithm, called DVSST, is presented that can be used with sporadic tasks in conjunction with the preemptive EDF scheduling algorithm. The algorithm is proven to guarantee each task meets its deadline while saving the maximum amount of energy possible with processor frequency scaling when tasks execute with their worst-case execution times.
DVSST was implemented in the &#;C/OS-II real-time operating …

A Machine Learning Approach To Detecting Attacks By Identifying Anomalies In Network Traffic, Matthew Vincent Mahoney May 2003

A Machine Learning Approach To Detecting Attacks By Identifying Anomalies In Network Traffic, Matthew Vincent Mahoney

Theses and Dissertations

The current approach to detecting novel attacks in network traffic is to model the normal frequency of session IP addresses and server port usage and to signal unusual combinations of these attributes as suspicious. We make four major contributions to the field of network anomaly detection. First, rather than just model user behavior, we also model network protocols from the data link through the application layer in order to detect attacks that exploit vulnerabilities in the implementation of these protocols. Second, we introduce a time-based model suitable for the bursty nature of network traffic: the probability of an event depends …

A Taxonomy Of E-Commerce Risks And Failures, Giridharan Vilangadu Vijayaraghavan May 2003

A Taxonomy Of E-Commerce Risks And Failures, Giridharan Vilangadu Vijayaraghavan

Theses and Dissertations

Imagine being asked to test an e-commerce website. If you haven't tested one before, where would you start? What experience would you draw on? Where would you look for more information? Even very experienced testers have blind spots when they try to generate test ideas for an application that they have not tested. This thesis presents a simple outline that will help you generate test ideas and limit your blind spots. The outline is the result of about 18 months of research on classifying e-commerce related failures and risks. The result has 45 top-level categories and 700+ examples of errors …

The approach taken is to simplify the concepts of testing Web software to aid in a methodical treatment of the techniques required to conduct meaningful tests using a minimum amount of testing resources, conducting the tests from the client side of the Web application during the “ready for users” or …

Design And Implementation Of Exception Handling With Zero Overhead In Functional Languages, Ramon Zatarain Cabada May 2003

Design And Implementation Of Exception Handling With Zero Overhead In Functional Languages, Ramon Zatarain Cabada

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation considers the implementation of exception handling specifically for functional languages. Some implementations incur overhead for using exception handling even when no exceptions are raised. We show the results of some experiments with the SML of New Jersey and OCAML compilers, two well-known compilers for functional languages. Imperative languages avoid this overhead by using tables, but the approach does not easily transfer to compilers using continuation passing style (CPS). This dissertation proposes an approach that works with CPS compilers like SML of New Jersey. We first present an experiment where programs in SML are written with and without exception …

Planning Your Way To A More Usable Web Site, Pamela Gore, Sandra Hirsh May 2003

Planning Your Way To A More Usable Web Site, Pamela Gore, Sandra Hirsh

Faculty Publications

Planning for long-term periodic usability assessment is therefore as important as adding regularly fresh content and tracking usage. Fortunately, usability assessments need not be time consuming or expensive, unless your site is large and complex and you want to test it thoroughly each time. In a practical sense, usability assessment can reveal problems in the design, navigation, layout, or labeling that prevent users from finding what they need quickly. After analyzing your environment and setting the stage for ongoing usability assessment, it is time to develop the usability assessment plan, which will serve as the blueprint for usability assessment activities …

Extensions To Opengl For Cagd., Chunyan Ye May 2003

Extensions To Opengl For Cagd., Chunyan Ye

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many computer graphic API’s, including OpenGL, emphasize modeling with rectangular patches, which are especially useful in Computer Aided Geomeric Design (CAGD). However, not all shapes are rectangular; some are triangular or more complex. This paper extends the OpenGL library to support the modeling of triangular patches, Coons patches, and Box-splines patches. Compared with the triangular patch created from degenerate rectangular Bezier patch with the existing functions provided by OpenGL, the triangular Bezier patches can be used in certain design situations and allow designers to achieve high-quality results that are less CPU intense and require less storage space. The addition of …

Computational Markets To Regulate Mobile-Agent Systems, Jonathan Bredin, David Kotz, Daniela Rus, Rajiv T. Maheswaran, Cagri Imer, Tamer Başar May 2003

Computational Markets To Regulate Mobile-Agent Systems, Jonathan Bredin, David Kotz, Daniela Rus, Rajiv T. Maheswaran, Cagri Imer, Tamer Başar

Dartmouth Scholarship

Mobile-agent systems allow applications to distribute their resource consumption across the network. By prioritizing applications and publishing the cost of actions, it is possible for applications to achieve faster performance than in an environment where resources are evenly shared. We enforce the costs of actions through markets where user applications bid for computation from host machines. \par We represent applications as collections of mobile agents and introduce a distributed mechanism for allocating general computational priority to mobile agents. We derive a bidding strategy for an agent that plans expenditures given a budget and a series of tasks to complete. We …

Pair Programming To Facilitate The Training Of Newly-Hired Programmers, Mark Anthony Poff May 2003

Pair Programming To Facilitate The Training Of Newly-Hired Programmers, Mark Anthony Poff

Theses and Dissertations

Pair programming is touted by some software professionals as a style which allows developers to produce superior code in less time, and with fewer defects, than code produced by individuals. However, the acclaim for the pair methodology is not universal; some see it was a waste of effort which produces marginal improvements. Reported experiments which obtain quantitative results have typically been performed in an educational environment, and may not reflect actual workplace conditions. This thesis reports on an experiment using pair programing in an industrial setting. Its goal is to determine if this programming style can be used to increase …

Secure The Image-Based Simulated Telesurgery System, Yanjiang Yang, Zhenlan Wang, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Telemedicine services involve transmission of patient data over open computer network, and thus confront serious security challenges when the consequences are a matter of life and death. In this paper, we introduce an image-based simulated system for kyphoplasty telesurgery, wherein special attention is given to the fine-grained security implementation issues. Various security requirements are formalized and corresponding solutions are presented. Consequently, we implement the system to work in a secure way, while taking efficiency as a premier consideration.
