A Case Study In The Security Of Network-Enabled Devices, Simeon Xenitellis, Craig Valli Jan 2003

A Case Study In The Security Of Network-Enabled Devices, Simeon Xenitellis, Craig Valli

Research outputs pre 2011

It is becoming increasingly common for appliances and other electronic devices to be network-enabled for usability and automation purposes. There have been fears that malicious users can control such devices remotely. Since the installation base of such network-enabled household devices is still relatively small, we examine the types of vulnerabilities that another such applicance has, the network-enabled printer, which is commonly found in the education and business sector. In this paper we analyse the source of the vulnerabilities and present detailed threat scenarios. In addition, we examine four organisations in Australia and Europe. Based on the results of the case …

Algorithmic Composition In Contrasting Music Styles, Tristan Mcauley, Philip Hingston Jan 2003

Algorithmic Composition In Contrasting Music Styles, Tristan Mcauley, Philip Hingston

Research outputs pre 2011

The aim of this research was to automate the composition of convincingly “real” music in specific musical genres. By “real” music we mean music which is not obviously “machine generated”, is recognizable as being of the selected genre, is perceived as aesthetically pleasing, and is usable in a commercial context. To achieve this goal, various computational techniques were used, including genetic algorithms and finite state automata. The process involves an original, top down approach and a bottom up approach based on previous studies. Student musicians have objectively assessed the resulting compositions.

A Performance Analysis Of Distributed Algorithms In Javaspaces, Corba Services And Web Services, Suresh Sunku Jan 2003

A Performance Analysis Of Distributed Algorithms In Javaspaces, Corba Services And Web Services, Suresh Sunku

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Implementation of distributed parallel algorithms on networked computers has always been very difficult until the introduction of service-oriented architectures (SOA) like JavaSpaces service, CORBA services and Web Services. Algorithms of the type Master/Worker pattern are implemented with relative ease using the SOAs. This project analyzes the performance of such algorithms on three contemporary SOAs namely JavaSpaces service, CORBA services and Web Services. These architectures make the implementations of distributed algorithms reasonably fault tolerant and highly and dynamically scalable. Also, the systems built on these architectures are generally loosely coupled and operate asynchronously.

In this project we measure and analyze the …

An Architectural Pattern For Adaptable Middleware Infrastructure, Jason J. Mitchell

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Middleware technologies change so rapidly that designers must adapt existing software architectures to incorporate new emerging ones. This project proposes an architectural pattern and guidelines to abstract the communication barrier whereby allowing the developer to concentrate on the application logic.

We demonstrate our approach and the feasibility of easily upgrading the middleware infrastructure by implementing a sample project and three case studies using three different middlewares on the .NET framework.

Comparison Of Javaspace And Corba Technologies, Anjani Kumar Jha Jan 2003

Comparison Of Javaspace And Corba Technologies, Anjani Kumar Jha

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

With computer industry increasingly moving towards network-centric systems, particularly the Internet, competing technologies that help design and develop such systems are fast emerging in the marketplace. The fundamental characteristics of a networked environment are heterogeneity, partial failure, latency and difficulty of "gluing together" multiple, independent processes into a robust, scalable application. JavaSpaces, a shared memory paradigm, provides high-level coordination mechanism for Java easing the burden of creating distributed systems. Large class of distributed problems can be approached using Javaspaces' simple framework. JavaSpaces allows processes to communicate even if each was wholly ignorant of the others. CORBA on the other hand …

A Multi-Platform Application Suite For Enhancing South Asian Language Pedagogy, Tao Bai, Christopher K. Chung, Konstantin Läufer, Daisy Rockwell, George K. Thiruvathukal

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This interdisciplinary project explores the potential for handheld/wireless (H/W) technology in the context of language education within and beyond the classroom. Specifically, we have designed and implemented a suite of multi-platform (desktop/laptop, handheld, and browser) applications to enhance the teaching of South Asian languages such as Hindi-Urdu. Such languages are very difficult to learn, let alone write, and H/W devices (with their handwriting/drawing capabilities) can play a significant role in overcoming the learning curve. The initial application suite includes a character/word tracer, a word splitter/joiner, a smart flashcard with audio, contextual augmented stories for reading comprehension, and a poetic metronome. …

Scalable Implementations Of Mpi Atomicity For Concurrent Overlapping I/O, Wei-Keng Liao, Alok Choudhary, Kenin Coloma, George K. Thiruvathukal, Lee Ward, Eric Russell, Neil Pundit Jan 2003

Scalable Implementations Of Mpi Atomicity For Concurrent Overlapping I/O, Wei-Keng Liao, Alok Choudhary, Kenin Coloma, George K. Thiruvathukal, Lee Ward, Eric Russell, Neil Pundit

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

For concurrent I/O operations, atomicity defines the results in the overlapping file regions simultaneously read/written by requesting processes. Atomicity has been well studied at the file system level, such as POSIX standard. In this paper, we investigate the problems arising from the implementation of MPI atomicity for concurrent overlapping write access and provide a few programming solutions. Since the MPI definition of atomicity differs from the POSIX one, an implementation that simply relies on the POSIX file systems does not guarantee correct MPI semantics. To have a correct implementation of atomic I/O in MPI, we examine the efficiency of three …

Finding Unexpected Events In Staring Continuous-Dwell Sensor Data Streams Via Adaptive Prediction, Peter G. Raeth Jan 2003

Finding Unexpected Events In Staring Continuous-Dwell Sensor Data Streams Via Adaptive Prediction, Peter G. Raeth

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

This research produced a Predictive Anomaly Detector (PAD). It is an adaptive prediction-based approach to detecting unexpected events in data streams drawn from staring continuous-dwell sensors. The underlying technology is spectrum independent and does not depend on correlated data (neither temporal nor spatial) to achieve improved detection and extraction in highly robust environments. ("robust environment" refers to the data stream's control law being variable and the spectral content covering a wide range of wavelengths.)

The resulting approach uses a network of simple building-block equations (basis functions) to predict the non-event data and thereby present subtle sub-streams to a detection model …

Scalable Parallel Molecular Dynamics Algorithms For Organic Systems, Satyavani Vemparala Jan 2003

Scalable Parallel Molecular Dynamics Algorithms For Organic Systems, Satyavani Vemparala

LSU Master's Theses

A scalable parallel algorithm, Macro-Molecular Dynamics (MMD), has been developed for large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of organic macromolecules, based on space-time multi-resolution techniques and dynamic management of distributed lists. The algorithm also includes the calculation of long range forces using Fast Multipole Method (FMM). FMM is based on the octree data structure, in which each parent cell is divided into 8 child cells and this division continues until the cell size is equal to the non-bonded interaction cutoff length. Due to constant number of operations performed at each stage of the octree, the FMM algorithm scales as O(N). Design and …

Network Traffic Properties Of Bimodal Multicast Protocol, Öznur Özkasap, Mi̇ne Çağlar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The popularity of large-scale distributed applications, such as videoconferencing, multimedia dissemination, electronic stock exchange and distributed cooperative work, has grown with the availability of high-speed networks and the expansion of the Internet. The key property of this type of applications is the need to distribute data among multiple participants together with an application-specific quality of service needs. This fact makes scalable multicast protocols an essential underlying communication structure. Although there exist several studies investigating the traffic characteristics of unicast communication, multicast traffic has not been examined extensively in previous studies. It is well known that the aggregate traffic properties of …

Finally, the results are applied to an example system.

New Approaches For On-Line Tuning Of The Linear Sliding Surface Slope In Sliding Mode Controllers, Sezai̇ Tokat, İbrahi̇m Eksi̇n, Müjde Güzelkaya Jan 2003

New Approaches For On-Line Tuning Of The Linear Sliding Surface Slope In Sliding Mode Controllers, Sezai̇ Tokat, İbrahi̇m Eksi̇n, Müjde Güzelkaya

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The main objective of this study is to propose new approaches for on-line tuning of the linear sliding surface slope in sliding mode controllers. The new approaches are developed for a class of second order systems on new coordinate axes, one of which is the classical sliding surface and the other one is naturally chosen to be orthogonal to it. The control input of the sliding mode control law is then modified accordingly by applying the Lyapunov stability condition. The adjustment of the linear sliding surface slope defined in the new coordinate axes is achieved by tuning a new parameter …

Resonant Demagnetization Pwm Forward Converter, B. Bi̇lgi̇n, Işik Çadirci, R. Ergül, M. Ermi̇ş Jan 2003

Resonant Demagnetization Pwm Forward Converter, B. Bi̇lgi̇n, Işik Çadirci, R. Ergül, M. Ermi̇ş

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a new approach to demagnetization process of a PWM forward converter (FC) is proposed. According to this approach, the demagnetization winding and diode of a conventional FC are removed, and an external capacitor is added in parallel with the secondary diode. This replacement changes the linear demagnetization process of a conventional FC into a resonant demagnetization process. The theoretical performance results of the proposed resonant demagnetization forward converter (RDFC) are compared with those of a conventional FC. A side by side comparison made between the two types of demagnetization strategies has shown that RDFC has some advantages …

Zero-Crossing Based Demodulation Of Minimum Shift Keying, Mi̇ne Kalkan, Feza Keresteci̇oğlu Jan 2003

Zero-Crossing Based Demodulation Of Minimum Shift Keying, Mi̇ne Kalkan, Feza Keresteci̇oğlu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Minimum shift keying (MSK) modulation has features such as constant envelope, compact spectrum and good error performance, which are all desirable in many digital applications including mobile radio. Numerous receiver structures to demodulate MSK have been suggested, such as correlation receivers, differential detectors and frequency discriminators. MSK is a form of biphase keying and can be detected by a zero-crossing based phase demodulator which gives near optimum performance. In this paper, the bit error performance of a zero-crossing based coherent MSK demodulator is theoretically investigated and a closed-form expression for the bit error rate is derived. The results indicate that …

Music, Cbf And Differential Algebraic Constant Modulus Algorithms For Direction Of Arrival Estimation In Passive Coherent Locators, Ahmet Özçeti̇n

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In passive coherent locators (PCL) systems, noise and the precision of direction of arrival (DOA) estimation are key issues. This paper addresses the implementation of high-resolution DOA estimation methods, in particular the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm, the conventional beam forming (CBF) algorithm, and the algebraic constant modulus algorithm (ACMA). The goal is to compare the ACMA to the MUSIC and CBF algorithms for application to PCL. The results and analysis presented here support the use of constant modulus information, where available, as an important addition to DOA estimation. The ACMA offers many simple solutions to noise and separation related …

A Full Adaptive Observer For Dc Servo Motors, Ata Sevi̇nç Jan 2003

A Full Adaptive Observer For Dc Servo Motors, Ata Sevi̇nç

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

An adaptive observer estimating all parameters and load torque is proposed for DC servo motors. The observer uses no direct feedback but the adaptation schemes use current and speed measurements. Both the observer and adaptations are simple to implement for real-time applications. Simulation results are satisfactory for the full adaptive observer. If the observer works in parallel with only load torque and armature resistance adaptations, the results are very good even if very low-quality sensors are used. In this simulation, only a single hall sensor is used as a rotational transducer, which produces a single pulse per revolution, and very …

New Infratechnologies In The Deregulated Power Sector, Jordan Shikoski, Vladimir Katic, Risto Rechkoski Jan 2003

New Infratechnologies In The Deregulated Power Sector, Jordan Shikoski, Vladimir Katic, Risto Rechkoski

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper discusses new infratechnologies in the deregulated power sector. Most measurement and standardization techniques can be viewed as infratechnology. Infratechnologies are technical tools, including the measurement of data, test methods, and practices and technique. Standardization requirements are related to the measurement requirement. Although the system operation and market transactions concern many import aspects, they are insupportable and often complementary. This distinction between the technical and market information is important because the characteristics of information needs and the impact on economic efficiency and clean power are generally different. The present paper focuses on infratechnologies that can potentially increase the benefits …

Design Of A Tem-Cell With Increased Usable Test Area, Kresimir Malaric, Juraj Bartolic Jan 2003

Design Of A Tem-Cell With Increased Usable Test Area, Kresimir Malaric, Juraj Bartolic

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Transversal electromagnetic mode cells (TEM-cells) are used for electromagnetic compatibility measurements (emission and immunity), and for biomedical applications. Over the years, higher and higher frequencies are being used, which demands smaller transmission structures in order to obtain the homogeneous field distribution due to resonance. Such resonance destroys the TEM field, introducing higher order modes. The goal was to design the TEM-cell for GSM frequencies that will have a larger area with a homogeneous field used for testing, while still obtaining the characteristic impedance. Commercial TEM-cells used for frequencies of 900 MHz have only 2 cm in height available for testing, …

Dbunifier: A Framework For Automated Unification Of Textual Data In Multiple Remote Data Sources, John S. Dembowski Jan 2003

Dbunifier: A Framework For Automated Unification Of Textual Data In Multiple Remote Data Sources, John S. Dembowski

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Over time, advances in database technology and utilization have resulted in a rapid increase in the number and types of data sources. Simultaneously, numerous methods of unifying these various data sources have emerged. Research has shown that a more comprehensive set of data attribute matches between multiple schemas can be detected by combining a number of the unification methodologies as opposed to using a single method. In this research project, a unification framework, dbUNiFier, has been proposed as an approach to allow for easy integration of both existing and future unification methods and data sources.

Report On The Third Acm/Ieee Joint Conference On Digital Libraries (Jcdl), Michael L. Nelson Jan 2003

Report On The Third Acm/Ieee Joint Conference On Digital Libraries (Jcdl), Michael L. Nelson

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The Third ACM/IEEE Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL 2003) was held on the campus of Rice University in Houston, Texas, May 27 - 31. Regarding the merging of the ACM and IEEE conference series, in the JCDL 2002 conference report published last year in D-Lib Magazine Edie Rasmussen noted, "Perhaps by next year...no one will remember that it wasn't always so" [1]. Judging by the number of participants I met who did not know that the ACM and IEEE used to hold separate digital library conferences, Rasmussen's prediction has come to pass.
