Snap Scholar: The User Experience Of Engaging With Academic Research Through A Tappable Stories Medium, Ieva Burk
CMC Senior Theses
With the shift to learn and consume information through our mobile devices, most academic research is still only presented in long-form text. The Stanford Scholar Initiative has explored the segment of content creation and consumption of academic research through video. However, there has been another popular shift in presenting information from various social media platforms and media outlets in the past few years. Snapchat and Instagram have introduced the concept of tappable “Stories” that have gained popularity in the realm of content consumption.
To accelerate the growth of the creation of these research talks, I propose an alternative to video: …
Simulating And Modelling Opinion Dynamics, Jennifer Heermance
Simulating And Modelling Opinion Dynamics, Jennifer Heermance
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The foundation of social media is conversation. Social media allows people to share ideas and opinions, as well as discuss those opinions. A point of intrigue for many social scientists is how those opinions change through interaction with others. What influences someone’s opinion? When is a person willing to adapt their opinion, and when does it remain the same? Is it possible to measure these opinion dynamics? Our overall goal is to develop a more comprehensive model for opinion dynamics. The first step of this process is to simulate data that can then be analyzed and used to develop a …
Quantifying Human Biological Age: A Machine Learning Approach, Syed Ashiqur Rahman
Quantifying Human Biological Age: A Machine Learning Approach, Syed Ashiqur Rahman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Quantifying human biological age is an important and difficult challenge. Different biomarkers and numerous approaches have been studied for biological age prediction, each with its advantages and limitations. In this work, we first introduce a new anthropometric measure (called Surface-based Body Shape Index, SBSI) that accounts for both body shape and body size, and evaluate its performance as a predictor of all-cause mortality. We analyzed data from the National Health and Human Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Based on the analysis, we introduce a new body shape index constructed from four important anthropometric determinants of body shape and body size: body …
Improved N-Dimensional Data Visualization From Hyper-Radial Values, Todd J. Paciencia, Trevor J. Bihl, Kenneth W. Bauer
Improved N-Dimensional Data Visualization From Hyper-Radial Values, Todd J. Paciencia, Trevor J. Bihl, Kenneth W. Bauer
Faculty Publications
Higher-dimensional data, which is becoming common in many disciplines due to big data problems, are inherently difficult to visualize in a meaningful way. While many visualization methods exist, they are often difficult to interpret, involve multiple plots and overlaid points, or require simultaneous interpretations. This research adapts and extends hyper-radial visualization, a technique used to visualize Pareto fronts in multi-objective optimizations, to become an n-dimensional visualization tool. Hyper-radial visualization is seen to offer many advantages by presenting a low-dimensionality representation of data through easily understood calculations. First, hyper-radial visualization is extended for use with general multivariate data. Second, a method …

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Machine learning enables a computer to learn a relationship between two assumingly related types of information. One type of information could thus be used to predict any lack of informaion in the other using the learned relationship. During the last decades, it has become cheaper to collect biological information, which has resulted in increasingly large amounts of data. Biological information such as DNA is currently analyzed by a variety of tools. Although machine learning has already been used in various projects, a flexible tool for analyzing generic biological challenges has not yet been made. The recent advancements in the DNA …
Regression Tree Construction For Reinforcement Learning Problems With A General Action Space, Anthony S. Bush Jr
Regression Tree Construction For Reinforcement Learning Problems With A General Action Space, Anthony S. Bush Jr
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Part of the implementation of Reinforcement Learning is constructing a regression of values against states and actions and using that regression model to optimize over actions for a given state. One such common regression technique is that of a decision tree; or in the case of continuous input, a regression tree. In such a case, we fix the states and optimize over actions; however, standard regression trees do not easily optimize over a subset of the input variables\cite{Card1993}. The technique we propose in this thesis is a hybrid of regression trees and kernel regression. First, a regression tree splits over …
Toward Using High-Frequency Coastal Radars For Calibration Of S-Ais Based Ocean Vessel Tracking Models, Ben Freidrich
Toward Using High-Frequency Coastal Radars For Calibration Of S-Ais Based Ocean Vessel Tracking Models, Ben Freidrich
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Most of the world relies on ships for transportation, shipping, and tourism. Automatic Identification System messages are transmitted from ships and provide a wealth of positional data on these open ocean vessels. This data is being utilized to determine the optimal path for ships, as well as predicting where a ship may be going in the near future. It has only been in the past decade that Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) signals have been easily received with satellites (S-AIS) so there have been few studies that look at using available information and pairing it with the new abundance of ship …
Nonparametric Collective Spectral Density Estimation With An Application To Clustering The Brain Signals, Mehdi Maadooliat, Ying Sun, Tianbo Chen
Nonparametric Collective Spectral Density Estimation With An Application To Clustering The Brain Signals, Mehdi Maadooliat, Ying Sun, Tianbo Chen
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
In this paper, we develop a method for the simultaneous estimation of spectral density functions (SDFs) for a collection of stationary time series that share some common features. Due to the similarities among the SDFs, the log‐SDF can be represented using a common set of basis functions. The basis shared by the collection of the log‐SDFs is estimated as a low‐dimensional manifold of a large space spanned by a prespecified rich basis. A collective estimation approach pools information and borrows strength across the SDFs to achieve better estimation efficiency. Moreover, each estimated spectral density has a concise representation using the …

Transient Solution Of An M/M/1 Retrial Queue With Reneging From Orbit, A. Azhagappan, E. Veeramani, W. Monica, K. Sonabharathi
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, the transient behavior of an M/M/1 retrial queueing model is analyzed where the customers in the orbit possess the reneging behavior. There is no waiting room in the system for the arrivals. If the server is not free when the occurrence of an arrival, the arriving customer moves to the waiting group, known as orbit and retries for his service. If the server is idle when an arrival occurs (either coming from outside the queueing system or from the waiting group), the arrival immediately gets the service and leaves the system. Each individual customer in the orbit, …

An M^X/G(A,B)/1 Queue With Breakdown And Delay Time To Two Phase Repair Under Multiple Vacation, G. Ayyappan, M. Nirmala
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we consider an Mx /G(a,b)/1 queue with active breakdown and delay time to two phase repair under multiple vacation policy. A batch of customers arrive according to a compound Poisson process. The server serves the customers according to the “General Bulk Service Rule” (GBSR) and the service time follows a general (arbitrary) distribution. The server is unreliable and it may breakdown at any instance. As the result of breakdown, the service is suspended, the server waits for the repair to start and this waiting time is called as „delay time‟ and is assumed to follow general …

Analysis Of Batch Arrival Bulk Service Queue With Multiple Vacation Closedown Essential And Optional Repair, G. Ayyappan, T. Deepa
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The objective of this paper is to analyze an queueing model with multiple vacation, closedown, essential and optional repair. Whenever the queue size is less than , the server starts closedown and then goes to multiple vacation. This process continues until at least customer is waiting in the queue. Breakdown may occur with probability when the server is busy. After finishing a batch of service, if the server gets breakdown with a probability , the server will be sent for repair. After the completion of the first essential repair, the server is sent to the second optional repair with probability …

Batch Arrival Bulk Service Queue With Unreliable Server, Second Optional Service, Two Different Vacations And Restricted Admissibility Policy, G. Ayyappan, R. Supraja
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This paper is concerned with batch arrival queue with an additional second optional service to a batch of customers with dissimilar service rate where the idea of restricted admissibility of arriving batch of customers is also introduced. The server may take two different vacations (i) Emergency vacation-during service the server may go for vacation to an emergency call and after completion of the vacation, the server continues the remaining service to a batch of customers. (ii) Bernoulli vacation-after completion of first essential or second optional service, the server may take a vacation or may remain in the system to serve …

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications
A burgeoning area of research is using social network analysis to investigate college students' substance use behaviors. However, little research has incorporated students' perceived peer drinking norms into these analyses. The present study investigated the association between social network characteristics, alcohol use, and alcohol-related consequences among first-year college students (N 1,342; 81% of the first-year class) at one university. The moderating role of descriptive norms was also examined. Network characteristics and descriptive norms were derived from participants' nominations of up to 10 other students who were important to them; individual network characteristics included popularity (indegree), network expansiveness (outdegree), relationship reciprocity, …

Vpsearch: Achieving Verifiability For Privacy-Preserving Multi-Keyword Search Over Encrypted Cloud Data, Zhiguo Wan, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Although cloud computing offers elastic computation and storage resources, it poses challenges on verifiability of computations and data privacy. In this work we investigate verifiability for privacy-preserving multi-keyword search over outsourced documents. As the cloud server may return incorrect results due to system faults or incentive to reduce computation cost, it is critical to offer verifiability of search results and privacy protection for outsourced data at the same time. To fulfill these requirements, we design aVerifiablePrivacy-preserving keywordSearch scheme, called VPSearch, by integrating an adapted homomorphic MAC technique with a privacy-preserving multi-keyword search scheme. The proposed scheme enables the client to …

Strategic Players For Identifying Optimal Social Network Intervention Subjects, Miles Q. Ott, John M. Light, Melissa A. Clark, Nancy P. Barnett
Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications
We present a method whereby social network ties are used to identify behavioral leaders who are situated in the network such that these individuals are: 1) able to influence other individuals who are in need of and most receptive to intervention, thereby optimizing the impact of the intervention; and 2) not embedded with ties to individuals that are likely to be behaviorally antagonistic to the intervention or that would compromise the optimal impact of intervention. In this study we developed a method that we call Strategic Players, which is a solution for identifying a set of players who are close …
Semicontinuity Of Betweenness Functions, Paul Bankston, Aisling Mccluskey, Richard J. Smith
Semicontinuity Of Betweenness Functions, Paul Bankston, Aisling Mccluskey, Richard J. Smith
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
A ternary relational structure〈X,[⋅,⋅,⋅]〉, interpreting a notion of betweenness, gives rise to the family of intervals, with interval [a,b] being defined as the set of elements of X between a and b. Under very reasonable circumstances, X is also equipped with some topological structure, in such a way that each interval is a closed nonempty subset of X. The question then arises as to the continuity behavior—within the hyperspace context—of the betweenness function {x,y}↦[x,y]. We investigate two broad scenarios: the first involves metric spaces and Menger's betweenness interpretation; the second deals with continua and the subcontinuum interpretation.

We propose a five parameter transmuted geometric quadratic hazard rate (TG-QHR) distribution derived from mixture of quadratic hazard rate (QHR), geometric and transmuted distributions via the application of transmuted geometric-G (TG-G) family of Afify et al.(Pak J Statist 32(2), 139-160, 2016). Some of its structural properties are studied. Moments, incomplete moments, inequality measures, residual life functions and some other properties are theoretically taken up. The TG-QHR distribution is characterized via different techniques. Estimates of the parameters for TG-QHR distribution are obtained using maximum likelihood method. The simulation studies are performed on the basis of graphical results to illustrate the performance …

Industries can improve their business efficiency by analyzing and extracting relevant knowledge from large numbers of documents. Knowledge extraction manually from large volume of documents is labor intensive, unscalable and challenging. Consequently, there have been a number of attempts to develop intelligent systems to automatically extract relevant knowledge from OCR documents. Moreover, the automatic system can improve the capability of search engine by providing application-specific domain knowledge. However, extracting the efficient information from OCR documents is challenging due to highly unstructured format. In this paper, we propose an efficient framework for a knowledge extraction system that takes keywords based queries …

Deep learning has provided opportunities for advancement in many fields. One such opportunity is being able to accurately predict real world events. Ensuring proper motor function and being able to predict energy output is a valuable asset for owners of wind turbines. In this paper, we look at how effective a deep neural network is at predicting the failure or energy output of a wind turbine. A data set was obtained that contained sensor data from 17 wind turbines over 13 months, measuring numerous variables, such as spindle speed and blade position and whether or not the wind turbine experienced …
Bayesian Analytical Approaches For Metabolomics : A Novel Method For Molecular Structure-Informed Metabolite Interaction Modeling, A Novel Diagnostic Model For Differentiating Myocardial Infarction Type, And Approaches For Compound Identification Given Mass Spectrometry Data., Patrick J. Trainor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Metabolomics, the study of small molecules in biological systems, has enjoyed great success in enabling researchers to examine disease-associated metabolic dysregulation and has been utilized for the discovery biomarkers of disease and phenotypic states. In spite of recent technological advances in the analytical platforms utilized in metabolomics and the proliferation of tools for the analysis of metabolomics data, significant challenges in metabolomics data analyses remain. In this dissertation, we present three of these challenges and Bayesian methodological solutions for each. In the first part we develop a new methodology to serve a basis for making higher order inferences in metabolomics, …

We consider a multiple hypotheses problem with directional alternatives in a decision theoretic framework. We obtain an empirical Bayes rule subject to a constraint on mixed directional false discovery rate (mdFDR≤α) under the semiparametric setting where the distribution of the test statistic is parametric, but the prior distribution is nonparametric. We proposed separate priors for the left tail and right tail alternatives as it may be required for many applications. The proposed Bayes rule is compared through simulation against rules proposed by Benjamini and Yekutieli and Efron. We illustrate the proposed methodology for two sets of …

Data Center Application Security: Lateral Movement Detection Of Malware Using Behavioral Models, Harinder Pal Singh Bhasin, Elizabeth Ramsdell, Albert Alva, Rajiv Sreedhar, Medha Bhadkamkar
SMU Data Science Review
Data center security traditionally is implemented at the external network access points, i.e., the perimeter of the data center network, and focuses on preventing malicious software from entering the data center. However, these defenses do not cover all possible entry points for malicious software, and they are not 100% effective at preventing infiltration through the connection points. Therefore, security is required within the data center to detect malicious software activity including its lateral movement within the data center. In this paper, we present a machine learning-based network traffic analysis approach to detect the lateral movement of malicious software within the …

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) inhibit expression of target genes by binding to their RNA transcripts. It has been recently shown that RNA transcripts targeted by the same miRNA could “compete” for the miRNA molecules and thereby indirectly regulate each other. Experimental evidence has suggested that the aberration of such miRNA-mediated interaction between RNAs—called competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) interaction—can play important roles in tumorigenesis. Given the difficulty of deciphering context-specific miRNA binding, and the existence of various gene regulatory factors such as DNA methylation and copy number alteration, inferring context-specific ceRNA interactions accurately is a computationally challenging task. Here we propose a computational …

Given the continuing advancement of networking applications and our increased dependence upon software-based systems, there is a pressing need to develop improved security techniques for defending modern information technology (IT) systems from malicious cyber-attacks. Indeed, anyone can be impacted by such activities, including individuals, corporations, and governments. Furthermore, the sustained expansion of the network user base and its associated set of applications is also introducing additional vulnerabilities which can lead to criminal breaches and loss of critical data. As a result, the broader cybersecurity problem area has emerged as a significant concern, with many solution strategies being proposed for both …
Predicting River Stage Using Recurrent Neural Networks, Eric Rohli
Predicting River Stage Using Recurrent Neural Networks, Eric Rohli
LSU Master's Theses
River stage prediction is an important problem in the water transportation industry. Accurate river stage predictions provide crucial information to barge and tow boat operators, port terminal captains, and lock management officials. Shallow river levels caused by prolonged drought impact the loading capacity of barges and tow boats. High river levels caused by excessive rainfall or snowmelt allow for greater tow capacities but make downstream transportation and lock management risky. Current academic river height prediction systems utilize either time series statistical analysis or machine learning algorithms to forecast future river heights, but systems that combine these two areas often limit …

Explicit expressions for the densities of S = X1 + X2 , D = X1 − X2 , P = X1X2 and R= X1/X2 are derived when X1 and X2 are independent or sub-independent Kumaraswamy random variables. The expressions appear to involve the incomplete gamma functions. Some possible real life scenarios are mentioned in which such quantities might be of interest.
