Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This paper considers an M[X1] , M[X2] /G1,G2/1 general retrial queueing system with priority services. Two types of customers from different classes arrive at the system in different independent compound Poisson processes. The server follows the non-pre-emptive priority rule subject to working breakdown, Bernoulli vacation, starting failure, immediate feedback, collision and repair. After completing each service, the server may go for a vacation or remain idle in the system. The priority customers who find the server busy are queued in the system. If a low-priority customer finds the server busy, he is routed to …
Statistical Machine Learning Methods For Mining Spatial And Temporal Data, Fei Tan
Statistical Machine Learning Methods For Mining Spatial And Temporal Data, Fei Tan
Dissertations
Spatial and temporal dependencies are ubiquitous properties of data in numerous domains. The popularity of spatial and temporal data mining has thus grown with the increasing prevalence of massive data. The presence of spatial and temporal attributes not only provides complementary useful perspectives, but also poses new challenges to the representation and integration into the learning procedure. In this dissertation, the involved spatial and temporal dependencies are explored with three genres: sample-wise, feature-wise, and target-wise. A family of novel methodologies is developed accordingly for the dependency representation in respective scenarios.
First, dependencies among discrete, continuous and repeated observations are studied …

Responding To Some Challenges Posed By The Re-Identification Of Anonymized Personal Data, Herman T. Tavani, Frances S. Grodzinsky
Computer Ethics - Philosophical Enquiry (CEPE) Proceedings
In this paper, we examine a cluster of ethical controversies generated by the re-identification of anonymized personal data in the context of big data analytics, with particular attention to the implications for personal privacy. Our paper is organized into two main parts. Part One examines some ethical problems involving re-identification of personally identifiable information (PII) in large data sets. Part Two begins with a brief description of Moor and Weckert’s Dynamic Ethics (DE) and Nissenbaum’s Contextual Integrity (CI) Frameworks. We then investigate whether these frameworks, used together, can provide us with a more robust scheme for analyzing privacy concerns that …
Detection Of Sand Boils From Images Using Machine Learning Approaches, Aditi S. Kuchi
Detection Of Sand Boils From Images Using Machine Learning Approaches, Aditi S. Kuchi
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Levees provide protection for vast amounts of commercial and residential properties. However, these structures degrade over time, due to the impact of severe weather, sand boils, subsidence of land, seepage, etc. In this research, we focus on detecting sand boils. Sand boils occur when water under pressure wells up to the surface through a bed of sand. These make levees especially vulnerable. Object detection is a good approach to confirm the presence of sand boils from satellite or drone imagery, which can be utilized to assist in the automated levee monitoring methodology. Since sand boils have distinct features, applying object …

In this paper, we help NASA solve three Exploration Mission-1 (EM-1) challenges: data storage, computation time, and visualization of complex data. NASA is studying one year of trajectory data to determine available launch opportunities (about 90TBs of data). We improve data storage by introducing a cloud-based solution that provides elasticity and server upgrades. This migration will save $120k in infrastructure costs every four years, and potentially avoid schedule slips. Additionally, it increases computational efficiency by 125%. We further enhance computation via machine learning techniques that use the classic orbital elements to predict valid trajectories. Our machine learning model decreases trajectory …

Leveraging Natural Language Processing Applications And Microblogging Platform For Increased Transparency In Crisis Areas, Ernesto Carrera-Ruvalcaba, Johnson Ekedum, Austin Hancock, Ben Brock
SMU Data Science Review
Through microblogging applications, such as Twitter, people actively document their lives even in times of natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes. While first responders and crisis-teams are able to help people who call 911, or arrive at a designated shelter, there are vast amounts of information being exchanged online via Twitter that provide real-time, location-based alerts that are going unnoticed. To effectively use this information, the Tweets must be verified for authenticity and categorized to ensure that the proper authorities can be alerted. In this paper, we create a Crisis Message Corpus from geotagged Tweets occurring during 7 hurricanes …

With the recent advancements in technology, many tasks in fields such as computer vision, natural language processing, and signal processing have been solved using deep learning architectures. In the audio domain, these architectures have been used to learn musical features of songs to predict: moods, genres, and instruments. In the case of genre classification, deep learning models were applied to popular datasets--which are explicitly chosen to represent their genres--and achieved state-of-the-art results. However, these results have not been reproduced on less refined datasets. To this end, we introduce an un-curated dataset which contains genre labels and 30-second audio previews for …

Deep Embedding Kernel, Linh Le
Doctor of Data Science and Analytics Dissertations
Kernel methods and deep learning are two major branches of machine learning that have achieved numerous successes in both analytics and artificial intelligence. While having their own unique characteristics, both branches work through mapping data to a feature space that is supposedly more favorable towards the given task. This dissertation addresses the strengths and weaknesses of each mapping method through combining them and forming a family of novel deep architectures that center around the Deep Embedding Kernel (DEK). In short, DEK is a realization of a kernel function through a newly deep architecture. The mapping in DEK is both implicit …

A Grammar For Reproducible And Painless Extract-Transform-Load Operations On Medium Data, Benjamin S. Baumer
Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications
Many interesting datasets available on the Internet are of a medium size—too big to fit into a personal computer’s memory, but not so large that they would not fit comfortably on its hard disk. In the coming years, datasets of this magnitude will inform vital research in a wide array of application domains. However, due to a variety of constraints they are cumbersome to ingest, wrangle, analyze, and share in a reproducible fashion. These obstructions hamper thorough peer-review and thus disrupt the forward progress of science. We propose a predictable and pipeable framework for R (the state-of-the-art statistical computing environment) …
A Data-Driven Approach For Modeling Agents, Hamdi Kavak
A Data-Driven Approach For Modeling Agents, Hamdi Kavak
Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Agents are commonly created on a set of simple rules driven by theories, hypotheses, and assumptions. Such modeling premise has limited use of real-world data and is challenged when modeling real-world systems due to the lack of empirical grounding. Simultaneously, the last decade has witnessed the production and availability of large-scale data from various sensors that carry behavioral signals. These data sources have the potential to change the way we create agent-based models; from simple rules to driven by data. Despite this opportunity, the literature has neglected to offer a modeling approach to generate granular agent behaviors from data, creating …

Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) is a cardiovirulent enterovirus from the family Picornaviridae. The RNA genome houses an internal ribosome entry site (IRES) in the 5’ untranslated region (5’UTR) that enables cap-independent translation. Ample evidence suggests that the structure of the 5’UTR is a critical element for virulence. We probe RNA structure in solution using base-specific modifying agents such as dimethyl sulfate as well as backbone targeting agents such as N-methylisatoic anhydride used in Selective 2’-Hydroxyl Acylation Analyzed by Primer Extension (SHAPE). We have developed a pipeline that merges and evaluates base-specific and SHAPE data together with statistical analyses that provides confidence …

Session: 4 Multilinear Subspace Learning And Its Applications To Machine Learning, Randy Hoover, Kyle Caudle Dr., Karen Braman Dr.
SDSU Data Science Symposium
Multi-dimensional data analysis has seen increased interest in recent years. With more and more data arriving as 2-dimensional arrays (images) as opposed to 1-dimensioanl arrays (signals), new methods for dimensionality reduction, data analysis, and machine learning have been pursued. Most notably have been the Canonical Decompositions/Parallel Factors (commonly referred to as CP) and Tucker decompositions (commonly regarded as a high order SVD: HOSVD). In the current research we present an alternate method for computing singular value and eigenvalue decompositions on multi-way data through an algebra of circulants and illustrate their application to two well-known machine learning methods: Multi-Linear Principal Component …

An Evaluation Of Training Size Impact On Validation Accuracy For Optimized Convolutional Neural Networks, Jostein Barry-Straume, Adam Tschannen, Daniel W. Engels, Edward Fine
SMU Data Science Review
In this paper, we present an evaluation of training size impact on validation accuracy for an optimized Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). CNNs are currently the state-of-the-art architecture for object classification tasks. We used Amazon’s machine learning ecosystem to train and test 648 models to find the optimal hyperparameters with which to apply a CNN towards the Fashion-MNIST (Mixed National Institute of Standards and Technology) dataset. We were able to realize a validation accuracy of 90% by using only 40% of the original data. We found that hidden layers appear to have had zero impact on validation accuracy, whereas the neural …

In this paper, we present a performance comparison of machine learning algorithms executed on traditional and quantum computers. Quantum computing has potential of achieving incredible results for certain types of problems, and we explore if it can be applied to machine learning. First, we identified quantum machine learning algorithms with reproducible code and had classical machine learning counterparts. Then, we found relevant data sets with which we tested the comparable quantum and classical machine learning algorithm's performance. We evaluated performance with algorithm execution time and accuracy. We found that quantum variational support vector machines in some cases had higher accuracy …

The problem of forecasting market volatility is a difficult task for most fund managers. Volatility forecasts are used for risk management, alpha (risk) trading, and the reduction of trading friction. Improving the forecasts of future market volatility assists fund managers in adding or reducing risk in their portfolios as well as in increasing hedges to protect their portfolios in anticipation of a market sell-off event. Our analysis compares three existing financial models that forecast future market volatility using the Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index (VIX) to six machine/deep learning supervised regression methods. This analysis determines which models provide best …

SMU Data Science Review
In this paper, we present an approach to reducing bottom hole plunger dwell time for artificial lift systems. Lift systems are used in a process to remove contaminants from a natural gas well. A plunger is a mechanical device used to deliquefy natural gas wells by removing contaminants in the form of water, oil, wax, and sand from the wellbore. These contaminants decrease bottom-hole pressure which in turn hampers gas production by forming a physical barrier within the well tubing. As the plunger descends through the well it emits sounds which are recorded at the surface by an echo-meter that …

Using Neural Networks To Classify Discrete Circular Probability Distributions, Madelyn Gaumer
HMC Senior Theses
Given the rise in the application of neural networks to all sorts of interesting problems, it seems natural to apply them to statistical tests. This senior thesis studies whether neural networks built to classify discrete circular probability distributions can outperform a class of well-known statistical tests for uniformity for discrete circular data that includes the Rayleigh Test1, the Watson Test2, and the Ajne Test3. Each neural network used is relatively small with no more than 3 layers: an input layer taking in discrete data sets on a circle, a hidden layer, and an output …

High Dimensional Outlier Detection, Omid Khormali
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
In statistics and data science, outliers are data points that differ greatly from other observations in a data set. They are important attributes of the data because they can dramatically influence patterns and relationships manifested by non-outliers. It is therefore very important to detect and adequately deal with outliers. Recently, a novel algorithm, the ROMA algorithm, has been proposed [11]. In this paper, we propose a modification of the ROMA algorithm that reduces its computational complexity from $O(n^2 m)$ to $O((n/(2^m-o(1)))^2 m)$ where $n$ is the number of data points and $m$ is the dimension of the space. And as …

Time-Reflective Text Representations For Semantic Evolution Tracking And Trend Analytics, Roberto Camacho Barranco
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The extraction of significant, relevant, and useful trends from massive document collections, such as a streaming newswire or scientific publications, is a challenging and significant problem in many different fields, including intelligence analysis, recommendation systems, and scientific research. However, techniques that tackle trend analytics of such large text corpora are limited because research that addresses the temporal nature of these publications is still in its early stages. In this work, we first show that it is possible to capture the evolution of a story (or trend) by connecting the dots between different documents in a text corpus. The observed results …

If the Warriors beat the Rockets and the Rockets beat the Spurs, does that mean that the Warriors are better than the Spurs? Sophisticated fans would argue that the Warriors are better by the transitive property, but could Spurs fans make a legitimate argument that their team is better despite this chain of evidence?
We first explore the nature of intransitive (rock-scissors-paper) relationships with a graph theoretic approach to the method of paired comparisons framework popularized by Kendall and Smith (1940). Then, we focus on the setting where all pairs of items, teams, players, or objects have been compared to …
On Cluster Robust Models, José Bayoán Santiago Calderón
On Cluster Robust Models, José Bayoán Santiago Calderón
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Cluster robust models are a kind of statistical models that attempt to estimate parameters considering potential heterogeneity in treatment effects. Absent heterogeneity in treatment effects, the partial and average treatment effect are the same. When heterogeneity in treatment effects occurs, the average treatment effect is a function of the various partial treatment effects and the composition of the population of interest. The first chapter explores the performance of common estimators as a function of the presence of heterogeneity in treatment effects and other characteristics that may influence their performance for estimating average treatment effects. The second chapter examines various approaches …

Self-care activities classification poses significant challenges in identifying children’s unique functional abilities and needs within the exceptional children healthcare system. The accuracy of diagnosing a child's self-care problem, such as toileting or dressing, is highly influenced by an occupational therapists’ experience and time constraints. Thus, there is a need for objective means to detect and predict in advance the self-care problems of children with physical and motor disabilities. We use clustering to discover interesting information from self-care problems, perform automatic classification of binary data, and discover outliers. The advantages are twofold: the advancement of knowledge on identifying self-care problems in …

When it comes to cancer, there is no standardized approach for identifying new cancer classes nor is there a standardized approach for assigning cancer tumors to existing classes. These two ideas are known as class discovery and class prediction. For a cancer patient to receive proper treatment, it is important that the type of cancer be accurately identified. For my Senior Honors Project, I would like to use this opportunity to research a topic in bioinformatics. Bioinformatics incorporates a few different subjects into one including biology, computer science and statistics. An intricate method for class discovery and class prediction is …
