Biomimic membrane with nano-channels, which is made up of porin MspA and 1,2-Dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC) is constructed on glassy carbon substrate, and glucose oxidase (GOD) is modified on it. The direct electrochemical reaction and electrocatalytic behavior to oxygen and glucose of GOD on the GOD/MspA-DMPC/GC electreode are expounded by the cyclic voltammetric method. The study shows that GOD immobilized on porin MspA and DMPC biomimic membrane displays direct and surface-controlled electrochemical reaction nearby formal potential (E0′) of the flavoprotein active centre (FAD/FADH), and the electrochemical reaction contains two electrons and two protons exchange in 0.1 mmol·L-1 phosphate buffer solution (PBS) …

Several homo- and heterobimetallic NiII–MII complexes (MII = Fe, Co, Ni, Zn) supported by an unsymmetric polydentate ligand (L13−) are reported (L13− is the trianion of 2-[bis(2-hydroxy-3,5-tert-butylphenyl)aminomethyl]-4-methyl-6-[(2-pyridylmethyl)iminomethyl]phenol). The L13− chelate provides two distinct coordination environments: a planar tridentate {N2O} site (A) and a tetradentate {NO3} site (B). Reaction of L13− with equimolar amounts of NiII and MII salts provides bimetallic complexes in which the NiII ion exclusively occupies the tetragonal A-site and the MII ion is found …

By measuring cyclic voltammograms and polarization curves, the inhibition effects of benzimidazole (BMIH) concentration in acetonitrile system on a nickel electrode were investigated. It was found that the oxidation and the corrosion potentials shifted positively, and the oxidation current decreased with the increase in the concentration of BIMH. Potential dependent adsorption and film formation behavior of BMIH on the nickel electrode were investigated by in situ SERS spectroscopy. With the potential moving from negative direction to positive direction, the complexes made of BIMH and nickel were formed, preventing the nickel electrode from corrosion. A new microfluidic pumping and stirring technique was demonstrated for lab-on-a-chip applications. Microfluidics was accomplished via redox-MHD, which takes advantage of a body force (FB) that is generated when there is a net movement of ions in solution (j) in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field (B), according to the equation FB = j×B. In this work the movement of ions in solution was generated using electrodes modified with the conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) rather than a redox species in solution, which can interfere with analyte detection and with biological species. …

The modified electrodes have been fabricated by generation of Au nanoparticle chains, which was produced by reaction between HAuCl4 and sodium citrate without any additional capping agents or surfactants. The self-assembled Au nanoparticles were attached to the surface of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) layer by layer, using L-methionine (L-Met), thiourea (TU), allyl thiourea (ATU) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a crosslinking agent, respectively. The experimental results showed that the electrochemical performance of the different modified electrodes varied in [Fe(CN)6]3-/4- solution. Efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are needed for fuel cells and next generation metal-air batteries, as the overall efficiency of these systems is currently limited by cathode kinetics. While Pt and Pt-based alloys demonstrate excellent electrocatalytic activities, their prohibitive cost and rarity ultimately prevents their widespread utilization. Catalyst materials that are highly active, stable, and cost effective are needed. Manganese oxide (α-MnO2) catalysts doped with varying amounts of Cu or Ni were synthesized, characterized, and evaluated for their performance as catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline electrolyte. The main focus of this study is the need for understanding the reaction mechanism and intermediates formed on Pt-modified Au surface as anode catalysts in the formic acid fuel cells. Two meso-dichlorophenyl substituted metallocorroles were synthesized and characterized as to their electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical properties in dichloromethane, benzonitrile, and pyridine containing 0.1 M tetra-n-butylammonium perchlorate (TBAP) as supporting electrolyte. The examined compounds are represented as (Cl_2Ph)_3CorFe^{IV}Cl and (Cl_2Ph)_3CorMn^{IV}Cl where (Cl_2Ph)_3Cor is the trianion of 5,10,15-tri(2,4-dichlorophenyl)corrole. A new, substituted 2-[(E)-{[4-(benzyloxy)phenyl]imino} methyl]-4-[(E)-(4-nitrophenyl)diazenyl]phenol azo-azomethine ligand (mbH) was synthesized from 2-hydroxy-5-[(4-nitrophenyl)diazenyl]benzaldehyde and 4-benzyloxyanilinehydrochloride in ethyl alcohol solution. These mononuclear Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) complexes of the ligand were prepared and their structures were proposed by elemental analysis, and infrared and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy; the proton NMR spectrum of the mbH ligand was also recorded. The azo-azomethine ligand, mbH, behaves as a bidentate ligand coordinating through the nitrogen atom of the azomethine (--CH=N--) and the oxygen atom of the phenolic group. Elemental analyses indicated that the metal:ligand ratio was 1:2 in the metal chelates. Powder X-ray diffraction parameters suggested …

Unique microfluidic control actuated by simply turning off and on microfabricated electrodes in a small-volume system was investigated for lab-on-a-chip applications. This was accomplished using a relatively new pumping technique of redox-magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), which as shown in this dissertation generated the important microfluidic features of flat flow profile and fluid circulation. MHD is driven by the body force, FB = j × B, which is the magnetic part of the Lorentz force equation, and its direction is given by the right hand rule. The significance of second-sphere interactions in synthetic catalysts and metalloenzyme active sites has encouraged the development of ligand frameworks capable of supporting intramolecular hydrogen-bonding networks. With this approach in mind, we prepared a series of 2,6-pyridinedicarboxamide ligands (H2LX) that feature outer-sphere heterocyclic groups (pyridine, pyrimidine, or quinoline rings). Reaction with CuCl2 yields complexes with the general formula [CuCl2(LX{H}2)] (1X), in which the pincer ligands coordinate to the CuII center in a tridentate fashion through the central pyridine and two amidato nitrogen atoms. Electrochemical-surface plasmon resonance (EC-SPR) technique, developed in recent years, is a new technology which combines time-resolved surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy and electrochemical methods. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is a physical phenomenon generated by optical coupling using a metallic thin film and is very sensitive to optical analysis. The principles of SPR and EC-SPR are briefly introduced and the applications of the combination of SPR spectroscopy with electrochemical techniques are reviewed in this paper. This new technology has been widely used in such research areas as reaction dynamics, biochemical sensors, electrode/electrolyte interfaces, kinetic parameters and bimolecular interactions.

Organic nitroalkanes are used in many industries and for a variety of purposes. Their use is expanding and is steadily claiming new territories in our immediate environment. Some nitroalkanes, when they enter the human body, can be harmful as such or can be activated to generate reactive intermediates with known detrimental effects. P450 enzymes are known for metabolizing a variety of drugs and substances including organic nitroalkanes. The stabilization of electrochemically reactive compounds can lead to new breakthroughs in energy storage technology. This study focused on the oxidationreduction (redox) stabilization of indigo tetrasulfonate (ITS) from oxidation by oxygen, by forming a columbic complex with, poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (poly(DADMAC)). Cyclic voltammetry was investigated as a tool to analyze such a complex solution of electrochemically active macromolecules. Complex scans were taken of poly(DADMAC) to ITS at 1 :20, 1 :6. 7 and 11: 13 molar ratios. Mono and hetero binuclear cryptates, [Gd(III)ML]^+ [M = VO(IV), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II)], were synthesized by a 2-step method. The ligand L represents the deprotonated anionic cryptate obtained by the 2+3 condensation of tris-(2-aminoethyl)amine with 2,6-diformyl-4-nitrophenol. The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, spectral, magnetic, and electrochemical studies. Fluorescence of Gd(III) ion in the cavity was quenched by the encapsulated Cu(II) and Ni(II) ions. [GdCoL(NO_3)]^+ cryptate had a high lifetime value compared to other cryptates. The cyclic voltammogram showed that the reduction potential values of [Gd(M)L] M = VO(IV), Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) complexes were in the following order: Cu(II) > Ni(II) …

This thesis presents the results and discussion of the investigation of the effects of Brönsted bases on the kinetics and thermodynamics of two proton-coupled electron transfer processes: the mediated oxidation of glutathione and the electrochemical oxidation of hydroquinone. Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) is the name given to reactions that involve the transfer of electron(s) accompanied by the exchange of proton(s). This work utilized the sol-gel process in two ways. First, macroporous silica thin films were developed using a combination of casting techniques and templating. Macroporsity was introduced to the silica thin films by either doping the silica sol before casting or by ordering the template on a substrate and then casting a sol over it. These techniques were first used to create silica thin films with long microchannel pores (200 nm x 60 µm) from a doped sol with the bacteria, B. This review focuses on recent developments in molten-salt electrolytic metallurgical processes with respect to 1) high-efficiency metallurgical technologies via electrolytic reduction of solid oxides in molten chlorides and 2) zero-carbon-footprint electrochemical splitting metallurgical technologies. Initiating with an introduction on dynamic solid/solid/liquid three-phrase interlines electrochemistry for electrochemical reduction of solid cathode, the former aspect is discussed in terms of facilitating mass transfer throughout solid cathode, one-step production of functional alloy powders with the assistance of under-potential electroreduction of active metals and near-net-shape production of metal/alloy components. The effects of adsorbed gold nanoparticles on the surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) difference spectra of redox-induced cytochrome (Cyt) c in AuNPs/Cyt c/Au sandwich architecture were monitored by SEIRA spectroscopy. The results indicated that the intensity of SEIRA difference spectrum for the vibration of the heme was significantly increased due to the adsorption of gold nanoparticles on the Cyt c. This was induced by the electron transfer between the heme and the gold nanoparticles, which also promoted electron transfer of adsorbed protein. This study suggested a new technique for optimizing the electrochemical property of adsorbed protein.

The electrochemical behavior of imidacloprid(IDP)on glassy carbon electrode has been investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The result shows that the electrochemical reduction of IDP is irreversible and controlled by diffusion. At 25 ℃, the numbers of the electrons transferred of IDP in the electrochemical reaction are four. The diffusion coefficient of IDP is 2.44×106 cm2·s-1 and the diffusion activation energy is calculated to be 9.33 kJ·mol-1.

The potential application of biochemically modified electrodes was investigated for construction of a drug biosensor. The electrocatalytic response of lidocaine was examined through modified electrodes using the electron transfer ability of hemoglobin (Hb) immobilized on gold film modified with a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA). According to the results of voltammetric studies, Au/MPA/Hb electrodes exhibited high sensitivity and good electrocatalytic activity for the reduction of lidocaine, motivating us to construct drug biosensors. Redox cycling is an electrochemical technique that cycles the reversible redox species between its oxidative states repeatedly on generator and collector electrodes. Two or more individually-addressable microelectrodes located close to each other allow redox cycling to be possible. Electrochemical behavior of a biologically important molecule, dopamine is examined under redox cycling conditions. To our knowledge, this is the first report on detection of physiological concentration of dopamine in presence of up to 100 times excess ascorbate with the use of redox cycling, without the involvement of polymer coating such as Nafion®.

Metalloporphinones have been found in a number of enzymes involved in nitrogen metabolism. The emphasis of this research project has been to develop spectroscopic markers in order to identify metal versus porphinone reduction. The carbonyl group in the porphinone has a very strong signal which is quite sensitive to the extent of reduction of the porphinone macrocycle.

Pine needle ZnO crystal whiskers were electrodeposited by anodization of zinc foil.The crystal whiskers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and X-ray diffraction(XRD) spectroscopy.The results show that the lengths and diameters of ZnO crystal whiskers are 200~300 nm and 20~50 nm,respectively,with the ratio of the length to diameter ranging from 10~15.The whiskers belong to wurtzite ZnO(JCPDS 36-1451) with good crystallinity and high purity.The crystalization behavior of ZnO was studied by cyclic voltammetry.The effects of the surface oxide layer at the zinc substrates and the [Zn(OH)4]2-concentration of the aqueous electrolyte on the formation of zinc oxide whiskers …

Oxidation of m- and p-substituted benzylidene fluorenes to antiaromatic dications was attempted by electrochemical and chemical means. Electrochemical oxidation to dications was successful for benzylidene fluorenes with p-methoxy, p-methyl, p-fluoro, and unsubstituted phenyl rings in the 3-position; attempts to oxidize the m-substituted derivatives via electrochemistry were unsuccessful. Chemical oxidation with SbF5/SO2ClF gave the dication of 9-[(4-methoxyphenyl)methylene]-9H-fluorene cleanly; oxidation of all other substituted benzylidene fluorenes resulted in mixtures of products.
