Anodic Electrochemistry: Controlling The Reactivity Of Radical Cation Intermediates, Robert John Perkins
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Radical cations are highly reactive intermediates which when formed can lead to a variety of interesting and efficient synthetic transformation. Electrochemical oxidations may be used to generate radical cations from electron rich, nucleophilic functional groups, triggering intramolecular cyclization reactions. These intramolecular anodic olefin coupling reactions are a powerful synthetic tool for coupling electron-rich olefins with a second nucleophile to form complex ring systems. However, they do not all work well. The main focus of this dissertation research is to diagnose the main causes of failed anodic olefin coupling reactions, devise new methods to overcome or circumvent these causes, and then …

Probing The Effects Of Nano-Domains On The Redox Products In Molecular Solvents-Rtils Mixtures, Abderrahman Atifi
Probing The Effects Of Nano-Domains On The Redox Products In Molecular Solvents-Rtils Mixtures, Abderrahman Atifi
Dissertations (1934 -)
Room temperature ionic liquids (RTIL) have been very attractive as replacements for molecular solvents (MS) in many areas in chemistry. The use of the RTIL in mixture with MS as reaction media will reduce the cost and viscosity of RTILs. The formation of RTIL nano-domains (nano-structures) in the mixture may lead to partitioning of solutes between the MS and the RTIL phase, where the properties and reactivity would be more like those in pure ionic liquids. In the present work, analytical approaches have been employed to probe the presence and effects of RTIL nano-domains on redox processes in the mixture. …

Journal of Electrochemistry
Cyclometalated ruthenium complexes have received increasing attractions recently due to their excellent redox and photophysical properties. One structural feature of these complexes is that there is a ruthenium-carbon (Ru-C) σ bond presented in the molecule. Three common methods, namely, the “late metalation”, “early metalation”, and “transmetalation” methods, for the synthesis of cyclometalated ruthenium complexes are discussed and summarized. General strategies for the design of cyclometalating ligand and cyclometalated ruthenium complexes are introduced. By using different ancillary ligands, such as pyridine, imidazole, triazole, and pyrimidine, a great number of ruthenium complexes can be prepared. The presence of the Ru-C bond significantly …

The solubility, coordination and speciation of f-elements in ionic liquids (ILs) has been the focus of numerous studies because the purely ionic systems have unique physical properties that can be exploited in comparison to aqueous, organic, or molten salt systems. Ionic liquids are thermally stable, have negligible vapor pressure, and are electrochemically stable at negative potentials that encompass the reduction potential of actinide species. Literature has suggested that the properties of ILs could potentially be utilized in the nuclear fuel cycle for separations and reprocessing. However, the solubility of f-elements in ILs has been significantly lower compared to traditional solvents. …

Adsorption Behavior Of Rhodamine 6g On Silver Surfaces Studied By Electrochemical Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, Chan-Juan Chen, Cheng Zong, Guo-Kun Liu, Bin Ren
Journal of Electrochemistry
Rhodamine 6G (R6G) is one of the most common probe molecules employed in single molecule surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SM-SERS). The study in adsorption behavior of R6G will help understand the interactions between R6G and surface. In this paper, we used electrochemical surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to study the potential-dependent adsorption behavior of R6G on silver electrodes. Our results show that when the potential moved negatively, the orientation of R6G on silver surface changed from vertical to inclined adsorption. This result indicates that the abnormal SM-SERS spectra of R6G observed in the former SM-SERS studies from other research groups are due …

Detection of trace metals has great importance in environmental and biological applications. While traditional electrochemical techniques have played critical roles in this field, their usefulness is limited by temporal resolution, Hg toxicity and stability concerns. Recently, we developed a method using fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) at carbon-fiber microelectrodes (CFMs) to achieve rapid measurement of metal ions with high sensitivity, selectivity, and stability. Through optimizations this method showed strengths in real-time trace metal analysis.
Analytical selectivity was improved via covalent functionalization on CFMs. We employed diazonium electrochemical reduction followed by click chemistry to create robust covalent attachments. We showcased its …

Networked films of monolayer-protected clusters (MPCs), alkanethiolate-stabilized gold nanoparticles, can be thermally decomposed to form stable gold on glass substrates that are subsequently modified with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) for use as modified electrodes. Electrochemical assessment of these SAM-modified gold substrates, including double-layer capacitance measurements, linear sweep desorption of the alkanethiolates, and diffusional redox probing, all show that SAMs formed on gold supports formed from thermolysis of MPC films possess substantially higher defect density compared to SAMs formed on traditional evaporated gold. The density of defects in the SAMs on thermolyzed gold is directly related to the strategies used to assemble …

The adsorption of the proteins CD13, mucin and bovine serum albumin on VLGXE-Au and YNGRT-Au interfaces was monitored by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in the presence of [Fe(CN)6]3−/4−. The hydrophobicity of the Au surface was tailored using specific peptides, blocking agents and diluents. The combination of blocking agents (ethanolamine or n-butylamine) and diluents (hexanethiol or 2-mercaptoethanol) was used to prepare various peptide-modified Au surfaces. Protein adsorption onto the peptide-Au surfaces modified with the combination of n-butylamine and hexanethiol produced a dramatic decrease in the charge transfer resistance, Rct, for all three proteins. In contrast, polar peptide-surfaces induced a minimal change in …

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
CO2 reduction is a pressing problem worldwide, and one obstacle in the electrochemical conversion of CO2 to more useful C1 products such as methanol and formic acid is the kinetic barrier known as overpotential. The overpotential of rearranging the nuclei in CO2 to accommodate electron transfer can be lowered by pre-bending the CO2 molecule in an adduct-mediated complex. The work presented in Part I utilizes a combination of hard and soft donors on pincer-like ligands to effect the bending of CO2 prior to electrochemical reduction. A large majority of the work consists of using …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
In this study peripherally tetra-substituted metal-free, metallophthalocyanines bearing (3,4-dimethoxybenzyl) oxy groups have been synthesized and characterized. Electrochemical properties of novel phthalocyanines 4, 5, 6, and 7 were determined by cyclic and square wave voltammetry in order to define their possible applications in different electrochemical technologies. Co^{II} and Ti^{IV}O metal ions behave as redox active cations in the core of the CoPc and TiOPc complexes, respectively. Voltammetric studies revealed that phthalocyanines have reversible/irreversible redox processes, which are the main requirement for the technological usage of these compounds.
