Well-defined and functionalized polymers have a wide variety of applications in biomedical studies. Advancements in the fields of drug delivery, microelectronics, and medical imaging, among other applications, are predicated upon the development of methods for the synthesis of precision polymers. Organocatalytic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic monomers is an effective route to the production of polymeric materials, namely polyesters and polycarbonates, whose biodegradable properties make them a viable option in biomedical research. Arguably, H-bond mediated catalysts are among the most selective catalysts for ROP, giving rise to highly functionalized polycarbonates, well-controlled polymerizations, and other custom tailored applications. With respect to …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The hydrogen/oxygen fuel cell is a greener, more efficient energy solution. However, there are many problems with the fuel cell including storage, infrastructure, cost, the oxygen reduction reaction, and the durability of the proton exchange membrane (PEM). The PEM is not only used as the electrolyte for the cell but also as a physical barrier between the anode and the cathode. The integrity of this membrane is crucial to the functioning of the fuel cell. This thesis will examine using ferricyanide as a probe molecule for diagnostic experiment of Nafion membrane integrity. Using hydrodynamic voltammetry with a rotating disk electrode …
An Electrochemical Characterization Of A Vanadium-Based Deoxydehydration Catalyst, Joel Eric Baker
An Electrochemical Characterization Of A Vanadium-Based Deoxydehydration Catalyst, Joel Eric Baker
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Alternative methods for the conversion of polyols into olefins, be it for carbon storage or hydrocarbon fuel production, have become prevalent in today’s chemical industry. One process in particular, deoxydehydration (DODH) has been proven effective in taking sustainable biomass derivatives and converting them through the utilization of various homogenous metal catalysts. While this process may show productive yields and material conversion, it is hindered by the need of a sacrificial reductant. This makes a novel process economically unviable and relatively unused outside of scientific research. That fact begs the question: Can the process be improved? It is proposed here that …

Nitrogen is essential for life on earth as it is a major constituent of amino acids and nucleic acids. Nitrogen gas (N2) is the most abundant form of nitrogen in the atmosphere but the strong N≡N bond makes it unavailable for most organisms. Certain prokaryotes known as diazotrophs possess the unique ability to convert N2 to ammonia (NH3) which can be utilized by other organisms as a source of nitrogen. The diazotrophs perform this difficult reaction with the help of a complex metalloenzyme, nitrogenase. This enzyme is a major contributor of the fixed source of …

Conservative Tryptophan Mutations In Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase Ptp1b And Its Effect On Catalytic Rate And Chemical Reaction, Teisha Richan
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Protein-tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) catalyze the hydrolysis of phosphorylated tyrosines by a 2-step mechanism involving nucleophilic attack by cysteine and general acid catalysis by aspartic acid. In most PTPs the aspartic acid resides on a flexible protein loop, consisting of about a dozen residues, called the WPD loop. PTP catalysis rates span several orders of magnitude, and differences in WPD loop dynamics have recently been show to correlate with the rate of enzymatic catalysis. The rate of WPD loop motion could possibly be related to a widely conserved tryptophan residue on the WPD loop. Therefore, point mutants were made in PTP1B …

First-Row Transition Metal Sulfides And Phosphides As Competent Electrocatalysts For Water Splitting, Nan Jiang
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Solar energy is a carbon-neutral and renewable energy resource. Its nature of intermittence and unequal distribution requires efficient solar energy capture, conversion, and storage. Solar-driven water splitting to produce hydrogen and oxygen is widely considered as an appealing approach to meet this goal, in which hydrogen acts as a green energy carrier. Water splitting consists of two redox half reactions: hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Both reactions involve the transfer of multiple electrons and protons and possess high energy barriers to proceed at appreciable rates, hence catalysts are needed.
A large number of HER and OER …

From 1943 to 1987, the Hanford site was the primary location for the production of Pu for military applications in the United States. Decades of Pu production have been accompanied by generation of large amounts of liquid and solid radioactive waste. One of radioelements present in the Hanford wastes is Tc, principally the isotope 99Tc (1500 kg). In the waste, it is primarily present in the heptavalent state as TcO4 - . One option for the management of Tc at the Hanford site is its vitrification into a borosilicate glass. The behavior of Tc during vitrification is problematic, as it …

Radiopharmaceuticals are very powerful diagnostic tools for evaluation of a host of medical conditions. These drugs are labeled with radioactive isotopes, which are utilized to create pictures of areas of interest through absorption of the drug. They are currently in high demand due to their ability to image areas that traditional imaging devices cannot. The radioisotope 99mTc, with a half-life of 6.01 hours and a 140 keV gamma emission, is central to many radiopharmaceutical compounds. This isotope is easily obtained from a 99Mo-99mTc generator, through beta decay and column chromatography separations. Very little technetium, less than 6 ng, is needed …

Solvatochromic Effects On The Absorption Spectrum Of 2-Thiocytosine, Brennan Ashwood, Carlos E. Crespo-Hernández
Faculty Scholarship
The solvatochromic effects of six different solvents on the UV absorption spectrum of 2-thiocytosine have been studied by a combination of experimental and theoretical techniques. The steady-state absorption spectra show significant shifts of the absorption bands, where in more polar solvents the first absorption maximum shifts to higher transition energies and the second maximum to lower energies. The observed solvatochromic shifts have been rationalized using three popular solvatochromic scales and with high-level multireference quantum chemistry calculations including implicit and explicit solvent effects. It has been found that the dipole moments of the excited states account for some general shifts in …

Nitrogen (N)-doped porous carbons are potential alternatives to precious metal catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathodes of proton exchange membrane fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Template-assisted synthesis has been used extensively as a robust and versatile method in the preparation of such carbon catalysts, where the ORR activity has been found to be dependent on various structural parameters, such as the concentrations and molecular configurations of the dopants, and the porosity, surface accessibility and electrical conductivity of the carbon materials. In this review, we summarize recent progress in this area of research focusing on the design, preparation …

Reconstruction Of Distributions Of Nanoparticles Or Electroactive Nano-Components In Electrochemical Arrays Based On Chronoamperometric Data, Alexander Oleinick, Oleksii Sliusarenko, Irina Svir, Christian Amatore
Journal of Electrochemistry
The main scope of this work was to elaborate and test a simple mathematical and numerical procedure for reconstructing the probability density distributions f(ρ) characterizing the distribution of electroactive or electrocatalytic nano-components present or deposited on the electrochemically-inert surface of a planar conductor based on the time-dependent chronoamperometric responses of the corresponding electrochemical array. The mathematical and numerical validity of the procedure was established for three types of arrays (one periodical, two involving random dispersions) involving near-spherical nano-components dispersed on a flat surface. Indeed, altogether, these three types represent most 2D-experimental electrochemical nano-arrays used for analytical or electrocatalytic purposes. This …

Impact Of Nafion Loading And Anion Adsorption On The Synthesis Of Pt Monolayer Core-Shell Catalysts, Lijun Yang, Dustin Banham, Elod Gyenge, Siyu Ye
Journal of Electrochemistry
Carbon supported palladium (Pd) nanoparticles were used as a model core material for the synthesis of platinum (Pt) monolayer core-shell catalysts using rotating disk electrode method and a copper (Cu) under potential deposition technique. The impact of Nafion on the synthesis process was revealed by electrochemical testing with various Nafion contents. The existence of Nafion influenced the Cu under potential deposition, galvanic replacement and eventually the oxygen reduction reaction activity of the core-shell catalyst. However, as long as the Nafion content was less than 5 wt% in the test film, adding Nafion could help to bind catalyst onto the surface …

Green Electrochemical Ozone Production Via Water Splitting: Mechanism Studies, Gregory Gibson, Wenfeng Lin
Journal of Electrochemistry
The green and energy-efficient water splitting reaction using electrocatalysis for O3 formation provides a very attractive alternative to the conventional energy-intensive cold corona discharge (CCD) method. Among a large number of electrocatalysts explored for the electrochemical ozone production, β-PbO2 and SnO2-based catalysts have proven to be the most efficient ones at room temperature. In this study Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations have been employed to investigate the possible mechanisms of ozone formation over these two types of catalysts. For both the β-PbO2 and Ni/Sb-SnO2 (nickel and antimony doped tin oxide) catalysts the (110) facet …

Comparison Of Oxygen Reduction Reaction Activity Of Pt-Alloy Nanocubes, Yongan Tang, Lin Dai, Shouzhong Zou
Journal of Electrochemistry
Alloying Pt with the first row non-noble transition metals has been demonstrated to increase the catalytic activity toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which is the cathode reaction of the proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and metal-air batteries. However, how much the ORR activity improvement comes from the alloying elements remains controversial. In this paper, the nanocubes of PtMn, PtFe, PtCo, and PtNi with the similar size and composition were prepared and their ORR activities were explored, in order to investigate the effects of alloying elements on the catalytic activity. The use of cubic shape particles minimizes the contribution to …

Resistive-Pulse Analysis Of Single Phospholipid Vesicles Using Quartz Nanochannels, Jonathan T. Cox, Bo Zhang
Journal of Electrochemistry
We report the uses of resistive-pulse method and quartz nanochannels for the detection and size analysis of single vesicles. Cylindrical shape quartz nanochannels have been used to detect single phospholipid vesicles ranging from 100 to 300 nm and polystyrene nanoparticles ranging from 170 to 400 nm in diameter. Translocations of single vesicles and nanoparticle were detected as individual square current pulses, which could be used to determine particle size. Our results show excellent agreement between the particle/vesicle sizes obtained from nanochannels and those from dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This electronic-based method was found to be …

Electrografting Of Mono-N-Boc-Ethylenediamine From An Acetonitrile/Aqueous Nahco3 Mixture, Hamzah Hisham, Denuault Guy, Bartlett Philip, Pinczewska Aleksandra, Kilburn Jeremy
Journal of Electrochemistry
The electrografting of primary amines to carbon electrodes is now widely employed for electrode modification. Using a mixture of acetonitrile and 0.1 mol⋅L-1 aqueous sodium hydrogen carborate (NaHCO3) in the ratio of 4:1, the efficiency for coupling of mono-N-Boc-ethylenediamine (EDA-Boc) on the surface of glassy carbon was significantly improved as compared with that obtained using acetonitrile alone. In the presence of NaHCO3 the initial current determined in the cyclic voltammogram became higher, and the layer of attached amine was formed more rapidly, accordingly, the electrode was passivated more rapidly. The resulting film of EDA-Boc was shown …
Assembly Of Effective Halide Receptors From Components. Comparing Hydrogen, Halogen, Tetrel Bonds, Steve Scheiner
Assembly Of Effective Halide Receptors From Components. Comparing Hydrogen, Halogen, Tetrel Bonds, Steve Scheiner
Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Receptors for halide anions are constructed based on the imidazolium unit, and then replacing the H-bonding C-H group firstby halogen-bonding C-I and then by tetrel-bonding C-SnH3 and C-SiF3.Attaching a phenyl ring to any of these species has little effect on its ability to bind a halide, but incorporation of a second imidazolium to the benzene connector, forming a bidentate dicationic receptor, greatly enhances the binding. Addition of electron-withdrawing F atoms to each imidazolium adds a further increment. F- consistently binds more strongly to the various receptor models than does Cl-. Whereas replacement of the H atom on the imidazolium groups …

Extraction Studies Of Toxic Multiply Charged Oxoanions From Aqueous Media Using Nanojars, Hartman Christian
Honors Theses
In this paper, the potential of nanojars as extracting agents of chromate and arsenate from aqueous media into a non-polar organic medium is investigated. Nanojars are a class of compounds that consist of multiple [cis-CuII(μ-OH)(μ-pz)]n cyclic polymerization isomers (n = 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14; pz = pyrazolato anion) that form from self-assembly reactions around a multiply-charged oxoanion core with capping counterions to render an overall neutral complex. This incarcerates the anion, preventing it from escaping the complex without the use of any covalent bonding, making it a potentially highly effective and unique extracting agent. We have concluded that …

Master of Science in Chemical Sciences Theses
Materials composed of titanium (IV) oxide (TiO2) have received enormous scientific interest due to titania’s abundance, non-toxicity, and photocatalytic proficiency, however its large band gap limits its applicability under ambient conditions. Various attempts have been made to incorporate titania into composite systems to sensitize it for activity under a broader range of wavelengths. One such method includes utilizing narrow band gap semiconductors to form an electron transfer process analogous to photosynthesis referred to as a Z-scheme. Z-scheme systems can catalyze the decomposition of aqueous pollutants via generation of reactive oxygen species after input of sunlight. This work reports …
