Thermal Conductivities Of Organic Semiconductors, Yulong Yao Jan 2017

Thermal Conductivities Of Organic Semiconductors, Yulong Yao

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

Organic semiconductors have gained a lot of interest due to their ease of processing, low-cost and inherent mechanical flexibility. Although most of the research has been on their electronic and optical properties, knowledge of the thermal properties is important in the design of electronic devices as well. Our group has used ac-calorimetric techniques to measure both in-plane and transverse thermal conductivities of a variety of organic semiconductors including small-molecule crystals and polymer blends. For layered crystals composed of molecules with planar backbones and silylethynyl (or germylethynyl) sidegroups projecting between the layers, very high interplanar thermal conductivities have been observed, presumably …

Biocompatible Copper Oxide Nanoparticle Composites From Cellulose And Chitosan: Facile Synthesis, Unique Structure, And Antimicrobial Activity, Chieu D. Tran, James Makuvaza, Erik Munson, Brian Bennett

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Copper in various forms has been known to have bactericidal activity. Challenges to its application include preventing mobilization of the copper, to both extend activity and avoid toxicity, and bioincompatibility of many candidate substrates for copper immobilization. Using a simple ionic liquid, butylmethylimmidazolium chloride as the solvent, we developed a facile and green method to synthesize biocompatible composites containing copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) from cellulose (CEL) and chitosan (CS) or CEL and keratin (KER). Spectroscopy and imaging results indicate that CEL, CS, and KER remained chemically intact and were homogeneously distributed in the composites with CuONPs with size of 22 …

Cytoprotection by activated protein C (aPC) after ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is associated with apoptosis inhibition. However, IRI is hallmarked by inflammation, and hence, cell-death forms disjunct from immunologically silent apoptosis are, in theory, more likely to be relevant. Because pyroptosis (ie, cell death resulting from inflammasome activation) is typically observed in IRI, we speculated that aPC ameliorates IRI by inhibiting inflammasome activation. Here we analyzed the impact of aPC on inflammasome activity in myocardial and renal IRIs. aPC treatment before or after myocardial IRI reduced infarct size and Nlrp3 inflammasome activation in mice. Kinetic in vivo analyses revealed that Nlrp3 …

Redox And Spectroscopic Properties Of Iron Porphyrin Nitroxyl In The Presence Of Weak Acids, Md. Hafizur Rahman, Michael D. Ryan

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The spectroelectrochemistry and voltammetry of Fe(OEP) (NO) in the presence of substituted phenols was studied. Cyclic voltammetry showed that two closely spaced waves were observed for the reduction of Fe(OEP) (NO) in the presence of substituted phenols. The first wave was a single electron reduction under voltammetric conditions. The second wave was kinetically controlled, multielectron process. Visible spectroelectrochemistry of Fe(OEP) (NO) in the presence of substituted phenols showed that three species were present during the electrolysis. Additional spectroscopic studies indicated that the two reduction species were Fe(OEP) (HNO) and Fe(OEP)(H2NOH). The Fe(OEP) (HNO) species, which can be generated …

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Understanding geometrical and size dependencies of through-space charge delocalization in multichromophoric systems is critical to model electron transfer and transport in materials and biomolecules. In this work, we examine the size evolution of hole delocalization in van der Waals clusters of fluorene (i.e., (F)n), where a range of geometries are possible, reflecting both π-stacking and C–H/π interactions. Using mass-selected two-color resonant two-photon ionization spectroscopy (2CR2PI), we measure electronic spectra and vertical ionization potentials (IPs) in the gas phase. Results are compared with model covalently linked assemblies (denoted Fn), exhibiting a sterically enforced cofacial (i.e., …

Preparation And Evaluation Techniques Of Porous Materials And Mixed Matrix Membranes For Targeted Co2 Separation Applications, Tsemre Tessema

Theses and Dissertations

The use of porous sorbents for physisorptive capture of CO2 from gas mixtures has been deemed attractive due to the low energy penalty associated with recycling of such materials. Porous organic polymers (POPs) have emerged as promising candidates with potential in the treatment of pre- and post- fuel combustion processes to separate CO2 from gas mixtures. Concurrently, significant advances have been made in establishing calculation methods that evaluate the practicality of porous sorbents for targeted gas separation applications. However, these methods rely on single gas adsorption isotherms without accounting for the dynamic gas mixtures encountered in real-life applications. …

Separation Of Transition And Heavy Metals Using Stationary Phase Gradients And Chelation Thin Layer Chromatography / Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Pogil-Pcl Workshops, Stacy L. Stegall

Theses and Dissertations

Gradient surfaces exhibit a variation in functionality along the length of the surface. One method for preparing gradients is controlled-rate infusion (CRI). In Part 1 of this work, CRI was used to prepare gradients for the purpose of separating transition and heavy metals. Initial work on this project was focused on controlling the retention of the metal ions by varying the number of amine groups, aminoalkoxysilane concentration, and the infusion time. The retention factors of four metal ions varied predictably with increasing number of amine groups, increasing aminoalkoxysilane concentration, and increasing infusion time, producing small but useful changes in the …

Effect Of Charged Species On The Gradient Properties, Kayesh Ashraf

Theses and Dissertations

Surface chemical gradients are materials that exhibit continuous, gradually varying chemical or physical properties along and across the length of a substrate. As a result, each point on the gradient surface can represent an individual sample. They are broadly classified as chemical and physical gradients depending upon the properties that the gradient exhibits. A physical gradient involves a continuous variation of physical properties such as surface roughness and film porosity on the micrometer scale. Chemical gradients involve a gradual variation of chemical properties such as polarity, acidity and basicity, etc. Such gradients have found various applications in cell adhesion, nanoparticle …

Small molecule synthesis has become a valuable tool in the study of biological systems. Biologically active compounds can be designed based on well-characterized endogenous systems or they can be found through the screening of large libraries of small molecules. This work involves the development of a small library of cyclic thiourea-based small molecules by use of an unreported synthetic pathway. Briefly, parent thioureas were cyclized by reaction with bromoacetyl bromide, and one or two isomeric heterocycles were found to form. Further studies indicated that the reaction could be easily manipulated by temperature or solvent to effectively control the product distribution. …

Recombination Reactions As A Possible Mechanism Of Mass-Independent Fractionation Of Sulfur Isotopes In The Archean Atmosphere Of Earth, Dmitri Babikov

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

A hierarchy of isotopically substituted recombination reactions is formulated for production of sulfur allotropes in the anoxic atmosphere of Archean Earth. The corresponding system of kinetics equations is solved analytically to obtain concise expressions for isotopic enrichments, with focus on mass-independent isotope effects due to symmetry, ignoring smaller mass-dependent effects. Proper inclusion of atom-exchange processes is shown to be important. This model predicts significant and equal depletions driven by reaction stoichiometry for all rare isotopes: 33S, 34S, and 36S. Interestingly, the ratio of capital Δ values obtained within this model for 33S and 36S is …

This thesis describes major findings on the shape transformation of the precursor silver decahedral nanoparticles (AgDeNPs) with pentagonal symmetry and twin defects into silver pentagonal prism nanoparticles (AgPPNPs) using Br¯ as a shape selective reagent. Silica-encapsulation of the gold-plated AgDeNPs was also carried out forming ordered arrays of silica encapsulated gold-plated AgDeNPs (SiO2@Au@AgDeNPs) of different sizes. At first, synthetic procedures for AgDeNPs (pentagonal bipyramids), silver pentagonal rod nanoparticles (AgPRNPs) and gold-plating of AgDeNPs (Au@AgDeNPs) were optimized. Gold plating enhances the chemical stability of AgDeNPs and preserves the superior plasmonic properties of silver. This thesis deals with the transformation …

Natural Organic Matter Characterization And Lead Speciation As Indicators Of Potential Lead Bioavailability In Aquatic Environments, Giselle Cimprich Jan 2017

Natural Organic Matter Characterization And Lead Speciation As Indicators Of Potential Lead Bioavailability In Aquatic Environments, Giselle Cimprich

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Trace metals and natural organic matter (NOM) are ubiquitous in aquatic environments. Some trace metals are essential for aquatic life, while other non-essential metals (like lead) can be toxic if present in great enough concentrations. Natural waters contain a combination of inorganic, and organic ligands capable of binding metals. While the chemistry of inorganic Pb species is well understood, and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) certified K values are readily available, the interactions between metals and organic matter is not so clearly defined. It is important to understand how NOM interacts with metals in the environment, as the …

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In this thesis, the synthesis of a series of brominated alkoxy-substituted trinaphthylenes was developed using a nickel-mediated Yamamoto coupling as the main step. Characterization of these compounds led to the discovery of a new set of broad range liquid crystals. They were found to undergo higher order transitions (i.e. glass phases/soft crystals/liquid crystal) via DSC, and also to decompose before reaching an isotropic liquid, as verified via thermogravimetric analysis. Polarized optical microscopy showed a texture characteristic of a columnar hexagonal mesophase. In addition, the aggregation in solution was studied using concentration dependent NMR studies, and the brominated-derivatives were determined to …

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Due to quantum dot’s ability to emit photons when subjected to light of sufficient energy, they have become optimal candidates for biomedical research and for optoelectronic applications. Fascination towards quantum dots arises from the fact that their properties are easily fine-tuned through a variety of different techniques. Electronic doping is a popular technique used to control the properties of quantum dots through the addition of different elements.

Via density functional theory calculations, this work investigated how the structural energies and HOMO-LUMO gaps were altered by the addition of impurity atoms. First, interstitial and substitutional doping styles were investigated at 0 …

A Density Functional Theory Study Of Intrinsically Chiral Semiconductor Nanocrystals, Richard Edwards Jan 2017

A Density Functional Theory Study Of Intrinsically Chiral Semiconductor Nanocrystals, Richard Edwards

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

A plethora of work has been done in the area of nanoparticles of late due to the fact that chemists (and physicists) have discovered that the properties of nanoparticles differ from both those of the bulk material and the atoms themselves. Nanoparticles have become of high interest for the use as catalysts while materials like graphene, being only one atom thick, have been shown to be great electrical conductors in comparison with the 3D structure of diamond. Among these peculiar nanoscale properties is the phenomenon of nanochirality, where a nanoparticle can exhibit chirality that does not extend to the macroscale …
