Electro-Catalytic Properties Of Β-Pbo2/Sb-Sno2/Ti Electrode On Phenol Oxidation, Peng Li, Yue-Min Zhao, Li-Zhang Wang, Yan-Le Zhang, Zhao-Qing Lu
Journal of Electrochemistry
The combination technology of brush pyrolysis and electroplating was employed in the preparation of β-PbO2/Sb-SnO2/Ti electrode. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) results showed that the Sb-SnO2 as an interlayer would restrain the formation of lead fluoride and the crystallization degree on the electrode surface could be as high as 100%. The grain size was calculated by Scherrer formula to be 25.2 nm and the agglomeration of lead dioxide was effectively eliminated. The potential span of diffusion control phase, oxygen evolution potential, Tafel slope for the β-PbO2/Sb-SnO2/Ti electrode during …

On The Origin Of The Errors Of IK As Estimated From K-L Equation In Rotating Disk Electrode System, Wei Chen, Ling-Wen Liao, Zheng-Da He, Yan-Xia Chen
Journal of Electrochemistry
Rotating disk electrode system is mainly used to study the kinetics of reactions whose reactants have very low solubility in the electrolyte. For an irreversible reaction, Koutecky-Levich equation (K-L Eq.) is frequently used to deduce the kinetic current ik). Since K-L Eq. is derived based on the assumption that a system should conform the steady-state diffusion conditions, the data recoded from the actual system which deviates from such a condition, great error may be induced for the ik estimated. In this work, polarization curves for oxygen reduction reaction at polycrystalline Pt electrode recorded in solutions with various …

Electrochemical And Spectroscopic Studies Of Ethanol Oxidation On Nano-Cubic Pt Modified By Tin Adatoms, Lu Rao, Bin-Wei Zhang, Yan-Yan Li, Yan-Xia Jiang, Shi-Gang Sun
Journal of Electrochemistry
The nano-cubic Pt modified by tin (Sn) was synthesized and used to investigate the role of this adatom played in the ethanol oxidation. The onset potential of ethanol oxidation was significantly shifted negatively which can be forward about 300 mV when the coverage of Sn (θSn)was 0.9. The electrtochemical in situ FTIR result demonstrated that the amount of CO2 increased first, and then decreased with θSn increased, and reached the maximun when θSn was 0.38. Furthermore, the formation of acetic acid could be observed at very low potential (-0.05 V) after modifying Sn adatom, and the amount of acetic …

Journal of Electrochemistry
The DNA-multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/glassy carbon (GC) electrode was prepared by modifying the DNA functionalized MWCNTs composite on a GC electrode. A novel non-enzymatic H2O2 sensing electrode was fabricated by electrodepositing Pt nanoparticles on the DNA-MWCNTs/GC electrode. The modified electrodes were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The response properties of the sensing electrode to H2O2 were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The results indicated that the sensing electrode exhibited a good linear relationship between response current and H2O2 concentration in the range of 0.04 ~ 18.07 mmol·L-1 with …

Aromatic S-nitrosothiols (RSNOs) are of significant interest as potential donors of nitric oxide and related biologically active molecules. Here, we address a number of poorly understood properties of these species via a detailed density functional theory and the natural bond orbital (NBO) investigation of the parent PhSNO molecule. We find that the characteristic perpendicular orientation of the −SNO group relative to the phenyl ring is determined by a combination of the steric factors and the donor–acceptor interactions including, in particular, a cascading orbital interaction involving electron delocalization from the oxygen lone pair to the σ-antibonding S–N orbital and then …

Aerosol emissions from prescribed fires can affect air quality on regional scales. Accurate representation of these emissions in models requires information regarding the amount and composition of the emitted species.Wemeasured a suite of submicron particulatematter species in young plumes emitted from prescribed fires (chaparral and montane ecosystems in California; coastal plain ecosystem in South Carolina) and from open burning of over 15 individual plant species in the laboratory. We report emission ratios and emission factors for refractory black carbon (rBC) and submicron nonrefractory aerosol and compare field and laboratory measurements to assess the representativeness of our laboratory-measured emissions. Laboratory measurements …

Tobacco smoke residues lingering in the indoor environment, also termed thirdhand smoke (THS), can be a source of long-term exposure to harmful pollutants. THS composition is affected by chemical transformations and by air–surface partitioning over time scales of minutes to months. This study identified and quantified airborne THS pollutants available for respiratory exposure, identified potential environmental tracers, and estimated health impacts to nonsmokers. In a ventilated 18 m3 laboratory chamber, six cigarettes were machine-smoked, and levels of particulate matter (PM2.5) and 58 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were monitored during an aging period of 18 h. Results were compared with field …

The binding of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) to synthetic nano-magnetie particles synthesized under open vessel conditions and a microwave assisted hydrothermal synthesis techniques was investigated. Batch studies showed that the binding of both the Cr(III) and Cr(VI) bound to the nano-materials in a pH dependent manner. The Cr(III) maximized at binding at pH 4 and 100% binding. Similarly, the Cr(VI) ions showed a maximum binding of 100% at pH 4. The data from the time dependency studies showed for the most part the majority of the binding occurred within the first 5 minutes of contact with the nanomaterial and remained constant …

In this study, a manganese oxide, Mn3O4 was used to remove chromium(III) and chromium(VI) from aqueous solutions. The Mn3O4 nanomaterial was synthesized through a precipitation method, and was characterized using XRD, which confirmed the material had a crystal structure similar to hausmannite. In addition, using Scherrer's equation it was determined that the nanomaterial had an average grain size of 19.5 ± 1.10 nm. A study of the effects of pH on the binding of chromium(III) and chromium(VI) showed that the optimum binding pH was 4 and 3 respectively. Batch isotherm studies were performed to determine the binding capacity of chromium(III), …

This work presents iron isotope data in the western equatorial Pacific. Marine aerosols and top core margin sediments display a slightly heavy Fe isotopic composition (δ56Fe) of 0.33 ± 0.11‰ (2SD) and 0.14 ± 0.07‰, respectively. Samples reflecting the influence of Papua New Guinea runoff (Sepik River and Rabaul volcano water) are characterized by crustal values. In seawater, Fe is mainly supplied in the particulate form and is found with a δ56Fe between −0.49 and 0.34 ± 0.07‰. The particulate Fe seems to be brought mainly by runoff and transported across continental shelves and slopes. …

Dissertations and Theses
Several Saccharomyces cerevisiae mutant tRNAQ2 species (glutamine isoacceptor, CUG anticodon) were synthesized and assayed for aminoacylation activity with Saccharomyces cerevisiae glutaminyl-tRNA synthetase. The derived steady state parameters were compared to similar datasets from the literature. The mutants behaved analogously to similar mutant species based on tRNA from Escherichia coli, but with slightly relaxed specificity as revealed by comparison of kcat/KM values relative to wild type in vitro transcribed tRNA. Additionally the eukaryotic N-terminal domain appendage, as found in Sce glutaminyl-tRNA synthetase, is considered in light of the discovery of non-canonical aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase functions, including …

Unusual Structure-Energy Correlations In Intramolecular Diels-Alder Reaction Transition States, Justyna M. Żurek, Robert L. Rae, Martin J. Paterson, Magnus Bebbington
Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Detailed analysis of calculated data from an experimental/computational study of intramolecular furan Diels-Alder reactions has led to the unusual discovery that the mean contraction of the newly forming C-C σ-bonds from the transition state to the product shows a linear correlation with both reaction Gibbs free energies and reverse energy barriers. There is evidence for a similar correlation in other intramolecular Diels-Alder reactions involving non-aromatic dienes. No such correlation is found for intermolecular Diels-Alder reactions.

New Experimental And Theoretical Tools For Studying Protein Systems With Elements Of Structural Disorder, Tairan Yuwen
Open Access Dissertations
Disordered proteins are one class of proteins which do not possess well-folded three-dimensional structures as their native conformations. Many eukaryotic proteins have been found to be fully disordered or contain certain disordered regions. Disordered proteins usually display several characteristic properties, such as increased motional freedom and the conformational heterogeneity caused by that. The elements of structural disorder are commonly involved in many important biological functions and are implicated in many diseases. Therefore, the study of disordered proteins has become one of the most important research topics in recent years. This thesis presents results from three different research projects; the common …

Determination Of Disulfide Bond Connecting Patterns Via Tandem Mass Spectrometry (Msn) And Biomolecular Ion/Radical Reactions, Kirt Lenroy Durand
Open Access Dissertations
Disulfide bond formation is one of the most common post translational modifications to occur in proteins and naturally occurring peptides. Disulfide bond formation plays a critical role in stabilizing their three-dimensional structure; therefore, it is very important to pinpoint the correct disulfide bond connecting pattern in order to fully understand the biological functions of these proteins and peptides. To fully characterize an analyte containing disulfide bonds, the sequence must first be known followed by the disulfide bond connecting pattern. This presents an analytical challenge as there are very few methodologies that can produce those essential pieces of information. The gold …

Chapter 1:
The aim of this research project was to measure the differences in proton affinities of tyrosine and its halogenated forms, 3-chlorotyrosine and 3-iodotyrosine. Tandem mass spectrometry was used here to measure the proton affinities. These amino acids were formed as protonated dimers with amino acids of known proton affinity and were introduced into the instrument through electrospray ionization (ESI). Based on the intensities of the protonated amino acids appeared in the mass spectrum when the dimer was isolated and fragmented, the proton affinities of the sample amino acids were calculated.
Chapter 2:
The research project was on mass …

Unknown Proton affinity (PA) of the amino acids were determined by comparing them with known PA of the reference standards. Initially we mixed 2 amino acids together [unknown (PA) and known (PA)] and introduce into mass spectrometer using direct infusion. After injecting we observe the peaks. The protonated dimer peak of known PA and unknown PA samples were isolated and fragmented. Once they were fragmented protonated dimer will produce two peaks corresponding to amino acid with unknown PA and amino acids with known PA. Based on the ratio of these amino acids we determine the unknown PA of an amino …
