Solid-Phase Synthesis Of Asymmetrically Substituted Phthalocyanines, Sultan Sibel Erdem
Solid-Phase Synthesis Of Asymmetrically Substituted Phthalocyanines, Sultan Sibel Erdem
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Phthalocyanines (Pcs) are excellent candidates for use as fluorophores for near-infrared (near-IR) fluorescent tagging of biomolecules and as photodynamic therapy (PDT) agents. Synthesis of Pcs with asymmetrical substitution on the periphery is often difficult due to the problems during the purification of the Pc mixtures obtained. The objective of this project is to design and synthesize chemically robust near-IR fluorophores for bioanalytical applications and to develop new synthetic methods for rapid synthesis of the target compounds. A novel synthetic route was developed utilizing a hydrophilic, polyethylene glycol-based (PEG) support with different types of linkers. The Pcs were functionalized with either …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The amino acids complexes of osmium(II), i.e. [Os(\eta 6-p-cymene)(\eta1-N-(rac)-phenylglycine methyl ester)Cl_2] (A) and [Os(\eta 6-p-cymene) (\eta1-N,N'-(S)-phenylalanine amido) Cl] (B), were prepared by an ultrasound energy-assisted method at room temperature. The solid structures of the newly synthesized complexes were determined by single crystal X-ray analysis. In A, osmium is bonded to 2 chloride ligands, the \eta 6-coordinated p-cymene molecule, and to a nitrogen atom of the corresponding amino acid derived ligand, whereas in the case of B the central osmium is surrounded by an N, N' bidentate amino amide ligand, by an \eta 6-coordinated p-cymene molecule, and a chloride ligand. Both …

This paper will give an example of a pedagogical approach taken in integrating nanotechnology into a chemistry degree course. In recent years nanotechnology has widely become part of the course content for undergraduate chemistry and physics degree curriculum. How contextualised the delivery of the subject matter may vary. The role of contextualisation of nanotechnology in the delivery of the content is the main focus of this paper, as to date in Ireland and many other countries nanotechnology has not been integrated into many chemistry degree courses but is slowly becoming the case. An evaluative methodology of the pedagogical approach for …
Synthesis Of Disubstituted Amino Acids And Peptide Inhibitors Of Amyloid Beta Aggregation, Gregory Todd Mccandless
Synthesis Of Disubstituted Amino Acids And Peptide Inhibitors Of Amyloid Beta Aggregation, Gregory Todd Mccandless
LSU Master's Theses
The aggregation process of amyloid beta from monomeric peptide to oligomers and fibrils is believed to be connected with the neurological disorder Alzheimer’s disease. The focus of this research is the synthesis of alpha, alpha-disubstituted amino acids and peptide inhibitors of amyloid beta aggregation. The inhibitors are designed to interrupt (or alter) this process by binding to amyloid beta’s central hydrophobic core region (residues 17-20, Leucine-Valine- Phenylalanine-Phenylalanine). Target specificity is achieved via self recognition by basing the inhibitors on the sequence in this region. The inclusion of disubstituted amino acids in the sequence of the inhibitors will provide a blocking …
Development And Evaluation Of Passive Sampling And Lc-Ms Based Techniques For The Detection And Monitoring Of Lipophilic Marine Toxins In Mesocosm And Field Studies, Elie Fux
Doctoral
The consumption of shellfish that accumulate marine biotoxins produced by harmful Algae can result in severe gastrointestinal or neurotoxic illnesses depending on the nature of the toxin. Therefore, it is essential that suitable monitoring programs are implemented in order to protect public health. This PhD study focused on aspects of the characteristics and monitoring of azaspiracids and toxins from Dinophysis spp. Passive samplers were used in this study in parallel with both indigenous and transplanted mussels that did not contain toxins to investigate the accumulation of toxins on the West coast of Ireland during 2005. This approach allowed for a …
Novel Photoelectrochemical Cell For The Remediation Of Organic Compounds In Water, Patrick Enright
Novel Photoelectrochemical Cell For The Remediation Of Organic Compounds In Water, Patrick Enright
Doctoral
Titanium dioxide (TiO2) suspensions have widely been used as photocatalysts, either alone or in a doped form to degrade organic compounds and kill bacteria. Because of its relatively large band gap, UV light has been the most efficient radiation used to allow this catalysis to occur. TiO2 has also been immobilised on electrodes in order to separate the ‘reduction’ and ‘oxidation’ reactions. Typical systems involve the oxidation of a ‘fuel’ at a TiO2 coated anode and the reduction of oxygen at a separate cathode, where the passage of current can be monitored, and this work utilises such a system. In …

Protein kinases play an important role in post-translational cellular signaling by regulating cell growth, differentiation and apoptosis, among other cellular activities. Furthermore, protein kinase (PK) deregulation has been implicated in many diseases, including cancer. For this reason, there has been considerable interest in the development of PK inhibitors, which could lead to the discovery of new cancer-treating drugs. Derivatives of 3-aminoquinazolinone and 2'-deoxyguanosine were synthesized as potential ATP-competitive inhibitors of the Src and FAK protein tyrosine kinases, and the effectiveness of the synthesized derivatives as protein tyrosine kinase inhibitors was quantified using [γ-32P]ATP radioisotope assays. The results of …

A systematic density functional study of the structure and bonding in the alkali-metal pentadienyl complexes C5H7E (E = Li-Cs) and their analogues derived from the 2,4-dimethylpentadienyl ligand is performed. The bonding in these structures has been analyzed in some detail with reference to molecular orbital analysis, and energy partition analysis, obtained by density functional calculations. An energy decomposition analysis indicates that the electrostatic interaction is the main factor to be considered in the stabilization of the gas-phase complexes we have studied. The stability of the U-shaped minimum energy structure decreases (the potential energy surface becomes more …

We have studied the fragmentation dynamics of core-excited SiF4 by means of soft-x-ray photoexcitation and partial positive and negative ion yield measurements around the Si L2,3-shell and F K-shell ionization thresholds. All detectable ionic fragments are reported and we observe significant differences between the various partial ion yields near the Si 2p threshold. The differences are similar to our previous results from CH3Cl showing more extended fragmentation in correspondence to transitions to Rydberg states. At variance with smaller systems, we observe negative ion production in the shape resonance region. This can be related …

Spin Dynamics In Single-Molecule Magnets Combining Surface Acoustic Waves And High-Frequency Electron Paramagnetic Resonance, F Macià, J Lawrence, S Hill, J M. Hernandez, J Tejada, P V. Santos, Christos Lampropoulos, G Christou
Chemistry Faculty Research and Scholarship
We report an experimental technique that integrates high-frequency surface acoustic waves (SAWs) with high-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance (HFEPR) spectroscopy in order to measure spin dynamics on fast time scales in single-molecule magnets. After the system is driven out of equilibrium by triggering magnetic avalanches, or simply by heating with short SAW pulses, the evolution of the spin populations within fixed energy levels is measured using HFEPR spectroscopy.

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Salicylaldehyde and some of its derivatives react with urea (or thiourea) and ethyl acetoacetate (the Biginelli reaction) to give products that depend on the type of the substituent in the ortho-position to the hydroxyl group. Aldehydes having oxygen-bearing substituents ortho to the hydroxyl group (e.g., OCH_3, NO_2, COOH) undergo chelation with the hydroxyl proton and lead to 4-aryl-6-methyl-4-aryl-2-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidine-5-ethyl carboxylate (the classical Biginelli product). Compounds not having such a property give oxacyclic products formed by addition of the hydroxyl proton to the C5-C6 double bond of the pyrimidine ring. This study also includes compounds having an amino group instead of the …

Hydrogenation Of Citral Over Ni And Ni-Sn Catalysts, Hi̇lal Aykaç, Selahatti̇n Yilmaz
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Liquid phase citral hydrogenation over zeolite-supported monometallic Ni and bimetallic Ni-Sn catalysts was studied. The zeolite support materials were Na-Y, Na-mordenite, and clinoptilolite. Ni and Sn contents of the monometallic and bimetallic catalysts were 8.1-9.2 wt% and 0.46 wt%, respectively. The type of the zeolite support affected the activity and selectivity of the catalysts differently. The main product of the citral hydrogenation reaction was citronellal, for both monometallic (84.5% yield) and bimetallic (44.5% yield) catalysts. The addition of promoter increased the selectivity to unsaturated alcohols (geraniol+nerol), i.e. it changed from 0.9% to 6.3% over mordenite and from 0.9% to 2.1% …

The spectroscopic properties of a chiral boronic acid based resorcinarene macrocycle employed for chiral analysis were investigated. Specifically, the emission and excitation characteristics of tetraarylboronate resorcinarene macrocycle (TBRM) and its quantum yield were evaluated. The chiral selector TBRM was investigated as a chiral reagent for the enantiomeric discrimination of amino acids using steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy. Chiral recognition of amino acids in the presence of the macrocycle was based on diastereomeric complexes. Results demonstrated that TBRM had better chiral discrimination ability for lysine as compared to the other amino acids. Partial least squares regression modeling (PLS-1) of spectral data for macrocycle-lysine …
