Zinc Perchlorate Hexahydrate Catalyzed Mono- And Bis-Transesterification Of Malonic Esters, Servet Tural
Zinc Perchlorate Hexahydrate Catalyzed Mono- And Bis-Transesterification Of Malonic Esters, Servet Tural
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Commercially available zinc perchlorate hexahydrate [Zn(ClO_4)_2.6H_2O] was found to be a highly effective catalyst for the transesterification of malonic esters with alcohols. The treatment of methyl-, ethyl-, or \alpha-substituted malonic esters with primary or secondary alcohols in the presence of a catalytic amount of zinc perchlorate results in good to high yields of the corresponding esters (68%-99%). Mono-transesterification products are also obtained in moderate to good yields (22%-42%). The reaction was also carried out with 2-mono- and di-substituted malonic esters, and in the case of 2-mono- and di-substituted malonic esters, the reaction time is, in some cases, shorter, in which …

Co Oxidation Over Mono And Bi-Metallic Sequentially Impregnated Pd-Pt Catalysts, Sarp Kaya, Deni̇z Üner
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The CO oxidation capability of sequentially impregnated Pd-Pt/\gamma -Al_2O_3 bimetallic catalysts was tested. The CO oxidation light-off curves were hierarchically spaced between monometallic Pd and monometallic Pt, which showed the highest and lowest activity, respectively, indicating that sequential impregnation did not result in the formation of bimetallic particles, but that the catalysts remained as monometallic entities over the support surface. An investigation of the effect of CO partial pressure on the reaction rates over monometallic catalysts indicated that in the presence of excess CO the surface of Pt was poisoned. On the other hand, in the presence of excess CO …

Local environment surrounding Zr atoms in the thin films of nanocrystalline zirconia (ZrO2) has been investigated by using the extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) technique. These films prepared by the ion beam assisted deposition exhibit long-range structural order of cubic phase and high hardness at room temperature without chemical stabilizers. The local structure around Zr probed by EXAFS indicates a cubic Zr sublattice with O atoms located on the nearest tetragonal sites with respect to the Zr central atoms, as well as highly disordered locations. Similar Zr local structure was also found in a ZrO2 nanocrystal …

3-Fluorothiophene is a small molecule and the known syntheses for this molecule are far from being straight forward and suffer from many drawbacks such as low yield, long synthetic procedures and the use of expensive or dangerous fluorinating agents. The synthesis of 3-fluorothiophene was accomplished in four steps and 49% overall yield by a very convenient method. 2,5-Dibromo-3-fluorothiophene was prepared in essentially one step synthesis involving a decarboxylation-bromination reaction. Both 3-fluorothiophene and 2,5-dibromo-3-fluorothiophene are potential monomers for a wide variety of fluorinated polythiophenes. Fluoroalkyl thiophene monomers, dimers and trimers were prepared. 3-Heptanoylthiophene is a key intermediate in the synthesis of …

Wet Etching Of Pillar-Covered Silicon Surfaces: Formation Of Crystallographically Defined Macropores, M E. Dudley, Kurt Kolasinski
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Silicon substrates exposed to laser ablation in a chemically reactive environment such as SF6 or HCl can experience spontaneous formation of conical pillars. We use these pillars as a template to define the dimensions and order of macropores produced by etching such substrates in aqueous solutions of KOH or tetramethylammonium hydroxide. The pillars anchor the sidewalls of the pores during etching, and the interpillar spacing controls the width of the pores. The macropores have crystallographically defined shapes for which we develop an explanation based on the kinetics of etching. Si(001) macropores can be etched such that they are rectangular with …
Determination Of The Degradation Mechanism For Polychlorinated Biphenyl Congeners Using Mechanically Alloyed Magnesium/Palladium, Robert Devor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Polychlorinated biphenyls are a ubiquitous environmental contaminant that can be found today throughout the world in soils and sediments, lakes and rivers, and flora and fauna. PCBs have percolated throughout the food chain, so that almost every human being has a detectable amount of the contaminant within their blood stream. Existing remediation methods include incineration, dredging and landfilling, and microbial degradation, but all of these methods have drawbacks that limit their effectiveness as treatment options. Recently, the use of zero-valent metals as a means of reductive dechlorination has been explored. Using a combination of zero-valent magnesium and catalytic palladium, a …

Forensic Analysis Of Automobile Paints By Atomic And Molecular Spectroscopic Methods And Statistical Data Analyses, Erin Mcintee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The analysis of 110 automotive paint samples was conducted for the research presented here. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was the central instrument utilized for analysis although scanning electron microscopy / energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy - attenuated total reflection (FTIR-ATR) analyses were also performed. Two separate methods of LIBS analysis of samples were used: a cross sectional analysis and a drill down analysis. SEM/EDS analysis focused on the cross section while FTIR-ATR analysis concentrated on the clearcoat layer. Several different data/statistical analyses were evaluated including principal components analysis (PCA), two tailed t-tests based on several …

Wet Weather Impact On Trihalomethane Formation Potential In Tributaries To Drinking Water Reservoirs, Eid A. Alkhatib, R. Peters
Chemistry & Physics Faculty Publications
During rain storm events, land surface runoff and resuspension of bottom sediments cause an increase in Trihalomethane (THM) precursors in rivers. These precursors, when chlorinated at water treatment facilities will lead to the formation of THMs and hence impact drinking water resources. In order to evaluate the wet weather impact on the potential formation of THMs, river samples were collected before, during and after three rain storms ranging from 15.2 to 24.9 mm precipitation. The samples were tested for THM formation potential and other indicators including UV254 absorbance, turbidity and volatile suspended solid (VSS). Average levels of THMs increased from …

Compressive Behavior Of Crosslinked Mesoporous Silica Aerogels At High Strain Rates, Hongbing Lu, H. Luo, Sudhir Mulik, Chariklia Sotiriou-Leventis, Nicholas Leventis
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Aerogels are low-density mesoporous materials with exceptionally low dielectric constants, low thermal conductivities (up to 40 times better thermal insulators than the best fiberglass) and high acoustic impedance. Their practical applications, however, have been slow due to their hydrophilicity and brittleness. The fragility problem was resolved by nanocasting a ~2-4 nm thick polymer layer on the skeletal silica nanoparticles that strengthens the weak inter-nanopartical necks. The thin polymer coats conformally the skeletal framework without clogging the mesopores and reinforces the structure by chemically crosslinking the nanoparticles. With a density increase by only three times, crosslinking aerogels have the flexural strength …

Simulation Of The Evolution Of The Nanostructure Of Crosslinked Silica-Aerogels Under Compression, Hongbing Lu, Boshen Fu, Nitin Daphalapurkar, Jay Hanan, Nicholas Leventis, Chariklia Sotiriou-Leventis
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Silica-aerogels are ultra-low-density assemblies of silica nanoparticles, and possess superior acoustic, specific energy absorption and thermal insulation properties. A new class of aerogels encapsulated with polymer is classified as crosslinked silica-aerogels. Manufacturing of such crosslinked silica-aerogel structures, depending on the type and shape of the nanoparticles, the polymer cross-linker and the chemistry in use, yields structures with vastly different morphologies and a wide range of mechanical behavior. With this, it has become necessary to understand the nanostructure / macroscopic properties relationship. Modeling of the aerogel material properties from mesoscale and up approach is needed, which is not considered by the …

Molecular motion of polymer chains is an important determinant in understanding the physical properties of polymeric materials. Glass transition temperature (Tg) is a physical property of polymers, which is of primary interest. The study of the dynamics of polymer segments assists in understanding the dependence of Tg on polymer structure.1 For decades, studies have addressed the molecular motion in various polymers. Some of them have probed the dynamics of polymer backbones.2,3 the properties of a polymer at an interface may change because of the type of polymer, the substrate, or other variables. The side chain of a polymer can also …

Synthesis Of Multifunctional Nanogels Using A Protected Macromonomer Approach, Neetu Singh, L. Andrew Lyon
Synthesis Of Multifunctional Nanogels Using A Protected Macromonomer Approach, Neetu Singh, L. Andrew Lyon
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
Nanoparticles possessing multiple functionalities provide synthetic handles for varied surface chemistries, making them useful for a range of applications such as biotargeting and drug delivery. However, the combination of interfering functionalities on the same particle is often challenging. We have employed a synthetic scheme involving chemical protection/deprotection to combine interfering functional groups on the same hydrogel nanoparticle. The synthesis of amine-containing poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) nanogels was carried out via free radical precipitation polymerization by incorporating a Fmoc-protected amine poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) macromonomer. The Fmoc group was then removed to obtain free amines, which were shown to be available for conjugation. We further …

Suppression Of Aromatase In Human Breast Cells By A Cyclooxygenase-2 Inhibitor And Its Analog Involves Multiple Mechanisms Independent Of Cyclooxygenase-2 Inhibition, Bin Su, Edgar S. Diaz-Cruz, Serena Landini, Robert W. Brueggemeier

Previous studies have demonstrated that cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor NS-398 decrease aromatase activity at the transcript level in breast cancer cells. However, N-Methyl NS-398, which does not have COX-2 inhibitory activity but has very similar structure to NS-398, decreases aromatase activity and transcription in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cells to the same extent as NS-398. This suggests that NS-398 decrease aromatase expression in breast cancer cells via other mechanism(s). Further investigations find that both compounds only decrease aromatase activity stimulated by forskolin/phorbol ester at the transcript level in both breast cancer cell lines and in breast stromal cells from patients. They …

High-Purity White Light From A Simple Single Dopant Host-Guest White Organic Lightemitting Diode Architecture, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr., Victor A. Montes, Shin-Ya Takizawa
Chemistry Faculty Publications
White light with good color properties color rendering index=82–87 is generated in a simple organic light-emitting diode comprising an emissive layer, composed of an undoped tris 4-methyl-8-quinolinato aluminum Almq3 sublayer and region doped with an orange-red phosphorescent dopant, bis 2-phenyl-1-quinoline iridium acetylacetonate Ir pq 2acac . Electron-hole recombination in a thin spacing Almq3 layer results in blue-green fluorescence, while the formed triplet excitons diffuse to the doped region and are harvested by the dopant to emit orange-red phosphorescence. The combination of blue-green and orange lights results in warm white light. This approach takes advantage of efficient migration of triplet excitons …

Specific Rna Self-Assembly With Minimal Paranemic Motifs, Kirill A. Afonin, Dennis J. Cieply, Neocles B. Leontis

The paranemic crossover (PX) is a motif for assembling two nucleic acid molecules using Watson-Crick (WC) basepairing without unfolding preformed secondary structure in the individual molecules. Once formed, the paranemic assembly motif comprises adjacent parallel double helices that crossover at every possible point over the length of the motif. The interaction is reversible as it does not require denaturation of basepairs internal to each interacting molecular unit. Paranemic assembly has been demonstrated for DNA but not for RNA and only for motifs with four or more crossover points and lengths of five or more helical half-turns. Here we report the …

Utilization Of Aptamers As Affinity Probes In Polymeric Microdevices For Disease Management And The Production Of A Recombinant Membrane Protein, Anne Obubuafo
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Aptamers have emerged as potential affinity agents that rival or complement antibodies in developing diagnostic assays for disease detection. We have demonstrated the use of PMMA microfluidic devices for conducting rapid affinity microchip CGE of a target protein using aptamers as the affinity probes with an electrophoresis development time of <2 min. Migration times were reproducible for thrombin complexes and free aptamers in CGE buffer with device-to-device RSD variations below 10%. By removing salts from plasma and adding an unlabeled random sequence oligonucleotide to the plasma, thrombin was detected in plasma. This method can be easily adapted to high-throughput parallel screening of plasma samples in multi-channel polymeric microdevices. The expression of rEpCAM in bacteria and mammalian cells was investigated with results showing successful expression in the mammalian systems, while protein expression in the bacteria was inhibited. Higher and prolonged expression levels were obtained in Cos 7 cells as compared to BHK and Hep2 cells due to episomal expression in Cos 7 cells. By combining a one-step IMAC procedure with electrophoresis and electro elution a more selective approach to obtaining electrophoretically pure rEpCAM was achieved. We developed dual-aptamer sandwich assays for thrombin and PDGF-BB targets on PMMA substrate using UV modification with a one-step EDC/NHS coupling reaction. Results indicate that the use of high EDC concentrations lead to faster immobilization and increased coverage density with a shorter sandwich assay development time. The assays were sensitive for both proteins and showed linearity in fluorescence response to changing protein concentration. Single molecule detection methods provide high sensitivity techniques in which aptamers can find use. We have demonstrated the use of two aptamers in a FRET-based assay for the detection of low levels of thrombin. Sensitivity and reliability of the aptamer smFRET assay depends on complex formation and stability. Due to the dissociation constants of the aptamers, single molecule events detected were below the calculated value for a 6 pM concentration of thrombin. Future work will involve adjusting the single molecule system by the use of pinholes to enable analysis of higher sample concentrations.

Novel Devices And Protocols Enabling Isolation And Enumeration Of Low Abundant Biological Cells From Complex Matrices, Andre Antonio Adams
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The dimensions of microfluidic devices closely parallel those of biological cells; thusly, they are excellent platforms for the speciation, transport, manipulation, and analysis of cells. Electrokinetic transport of Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae was evaluated in microfluidic devices fabricated in pristine and UV-modified poly(methylmethacrylate) and polycarbonate. The magnitude and direction of transport of the cells was dictated by the buffer composition, conduit surface chemistry, and intrinsic cellular electrical properties. Baker’s yeast in all devices migrated toward the cathode, because of their smaller electrophoretic mobility compared to the electroosmotic flow of the polymer. E. coli cells suspended in 20 mM PBS …
