Utilizing Structure Property Correlations To Predict And Analyze Two Derivatives Of An Ampicillin Homologous Series, C. Malesa, J. Stoddard, Ronald Bartzatt
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Structure Property Correlation methods such as regression analysis and pattern recognition are applied to predict the molecular properties of two members of an ampicillin homologous series. The pentyl and hexyl esters of ampicillin are also evaluated for their similarity to other penicillins by use of multiple regression, contingency tables, cluster analysis, correspondence analysis, self organizing tree algorithms, factor analysis, principal component analysis, box plots, and other graphing methods. Other members of the homologous series include methyl, ethyl, propyl, and butyl esters of ampicillin which have been previously synthesized and tested in tissue culture against Escherichia coli. All of the tested …

Application Of Potassium Chromate-Diphenylcarbazide In The Quantitative Determination Of Ascorbic Acid By Spectrophotometry, Meissam Noroozifar, M. Khorasani Motlagh
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A spectrophotometric procedure for the determination of ascorbic acid in pure form and in a number of pharmaceutical preparations and real samples has been developed that offers the advantages of simplicity, accuracy, precision and sensitivity over many other methods. The method is based on the oxidation of ascorbic acid by a known excess amount of potassium chromate followed by the estimation of the unreacted amount of chromate by reactions with sym-diphenylcarbazide. The reacted oxidant corresponds to the ascorbic content. At the maximum absorption of 548 nm, Beer's law is obeyed up to 5 \mu g/mL of ascorbic acid. Statistical treatment …
Synthesis, Characterization, And Application Of Water-Soluble Chiral Calix[4]Arene Derivatives In Spectroscopy And Capillary Electrokinetic Chromatography, Kim Hamilton
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation is an account of the synthesis, characterization, and application of novel water-soluble chiral calixarenes in spectroscopy and capillary electrophoresis. It is divided into four sections. The first part describes the synthesis and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) characterization of four p-t-butylcalix[4]arenes bearing L-amino acid moieties on their lower rims (CX4-AA). The structure and conformation of the derivatives have been determined using one- and two-dimensional NMR techniques. Proton and carbon-13 spectra show that the derivatives are tetra-substituted and adopt a cone conformation. The preparation and characterization of silica-bonded calixarene stationary phases for capillary electrochromatography is also reported in Chapter 2. …
Design, Synthesis, And Applications Of Bio-Derived Crosslinking Monomers For Molecular Imprinting, Martha Sibrian-Vazquez
Design, Synthesis, And Applications Of Bio-Derived Crosslinking Monomers For Molecular Imprinting, Martha Sibrian-Vazquez
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Most of the research in the field of molecular imprinting has been focused on the development of new functional monomers, in order to improve the molecular recognition properties afforded by these materials. The role of the crosslinking monomer has often been overlooked, since it is considered an inert component that only provides a scaffold to support the binding sites. However, the crosslinking monomer represents a high percent (80-90%) of the composition of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), which can have a large influence on the MIPs properties. This research addresses the design, synthesis, and applications of new crosslinking monomers for molecular …
A Novel, Semi-Pilot Scale Electrolysis System For The Production Of P-Aminophenol, Kamran Polat
A Novel, Semi-Pilot Scale Electrolysis System For The Production Of P-Aminophenol, Kamran Polat
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and preparative electrolysis techniques were used to investigate the reduction of nitrobenzene into (NB) p-aminophenol (p-Ap). The electrodes used in CV experiments were glassy carbon (GC), TiO_{2}/Ti, Sn and Pb. The preparative electrolyses were carried out by the use of Pb, Sn, carbon cloth and TiO_{2}/Ti electrodes. The CV data were evaluated according to Nicholson-Shain criteria, and it was deduced that the reductions on TiO_{2}/Ti and GC electrodes were irreversible and monitored by an electrochemical-chemical-electrochemical mechanism. No reduction peak was observed with Sn and Pb electrodes. Preparative electrolyses were carried out under current-controlled conditions in the presence …
The Redox Potential Of Ddt: An Environmental Perspective, Anne Lewis, Christopher Cramer, John Bumpus
The Redox Potential Of Ddt: An Environmental Perspective, Anne Lewis, Christopher Cramer, John Bumpus
Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)
Due to their low water solubility, the reduction potentials of DDT and dicofol are difficult to determine experimentally. Through computational methods, we calculated the one and two electron reduction potentials for DDT as 0.51 V and 0.67 V, respectively, and those for dicofol were 0.50 V and 0.74 V. This study is significant because we are able to calculate reliable redox potentials that may be utilized to predict chemical behavior and degradation pathways of environmental pollutants. To assess the accuracy of theoretical chemistry, we compared experimental and computational data and examined whether our calculated redox potentials fit with the known …

The Aqueous Phase Yield Of Alkyl Nitrates From Roo+No: Implications For Photochemical Production In Seawater, Elizabeth E. Dahl, Eric S. Saltzman, Warren J. De Bruyn
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
Alkyl nitrates have been observed in remote oceanic regions of the troposphere and in the surface ocean. The mechanism for their production in the oceans is not known. A likely source is the reaction of ROO + NO (where R is an alkyl group). Steady-state laboratory experiments show that alkyl nitrates are produced in the aqueous phase via this reaction, with branching ratios of 0.23 +/- 0.04, 0.67 +/- 0.03, and 0.71 +/- 0.04 for methyl, ethyl, and propyl nitrate respectively. The branching ratios in aqueous solution are significantly higher than in the gas phase. Irradiation of surface seawaters yield …
The Roles Of Silanes As Coupling Reagents And In Deoxygenative Alkylations, Andrea S. Dupre
The Roles Of Silanes As Coupling Reagents And In Deoxygenative Alkylations, Andrea S. Dupre
LSU Master's Theses
Silane reagents play important roles in many areas of organic synthesis. This is primarily due to the ability of silanes to bond to more ligands than the traditional four to become hypervalent (i.e. penta- or hexavalent). This hypervalency causes the silicon center to become more Lewis Acidic and causes the formation of carbon nucleophiles from organosilane ligands. These nucleophiles have been used to perform many cross-coupling reactions with organohalide reagents. The research presented in this thesis reports the utility of silane reagents in cross-coupling reactions of Grignard reagents with alkyl halides. This cross coupling was desirable because the silane should …
Genomic Instability Induced By Two Chemical Carcinogens, Cadmium And Nickel And By Particulate Titanium Debris From An Implant, Natasha Coen
Genomic Instability Induced By Two Chemical Carcinogens, Cadmium And Nickel And By Particulate Titanium Debris From An Implant, Natasha Coen
Doctoral
It has been established that cells surviving radiation may produce descendants many cell divisions post-exposure in which, there are high incidences of chromosomal aberrations arising de novo, gene mutation and lethal mutations/delayed cell death. These effects are collectively known as genomic instability and are induced at frequencies greater than that of spontaneous mutations. Formally this syndrome ‘genomic instability’ has only been definitively proven to occur following irradiation. This leads us to the consideration that heavy metals could also induce the genomic instability phenotype, and if so, it could have implications for those exposed through their occupation, through smoking or for …

Possible Cobalt-Cobalt Bridging By A Hemiacetal In The Dinuclear Cobalt Complex Bearing The Ligand Bis(3-(2-Pyridylmethyleneamino)Phenyl) Sulfone, Armando M. Guidote Jr, Tomoko Imajo, Yasuhiko Kurusu, Yoshiro Masuyama
Chemistry Faculty Publications
A dinuclear cobalt complex bearing the ligand bis(3-(2-pyridylmethyleneamino)phenyl) sulfone (BPMAPS) was prepared. It is proposed that the structure of this is [Coz(BPMAPS)(m-0AcMhemi-Et)]PF6 wherein the cobalt centers are bridged by two carboxylato groups in m-fashion and a hemiacetal with an ethoxy group (hemi-Et). This proposal is based on the similarity of the FT-IR, UV-Vis, and FAB-MS results with the crystallographically characterized dinuclear manganese complex [Mn2(BPMAPS)(m-OAcMhemi-Me)]PF6, and elemental analysis results.

Simulations Of Quantized Double Layer Charging Voltammetry Of Poly Disperse And Mono-Disperse Monolayer Protected Clusters, Deon T. Miles, Michael C. Leopold, Jocelyn F. Hicks, Royce W. Murray
Chemistry Faculty Publications
This paper describes simulated differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) of quantized double-layer charging (QDL) in poly-disperse monolayer-protected gold cluster (MPC) solutions. The simulation accounts for the voltage spacing between QDL peaks with a concentric sphere capacitor model, in which core sizes, and the relative proportion of each size, are input using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) data. MPC diffusion coefficients are estimated from hydrodynamic radii, and peaks are broadened to account for DPV pulse height effects. The smallest MPCs are omitted from the simulation because electrochemical HOMO/LUMO gap information is uncertain. The largest ones are shown to produce the underlying DPV current …

Urer, The Transcriptional Activator Of The Proteus Mirabilis Urease Gene Cluster, Is Required For Urease Activity And Virulence In Experimental Urinary Tract Infections, Jonathan D. Dattelbaum, C. Virginia Lockatell, David E. Johnson, Harry L.T. Mobley
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Proteus mirabilis, a cause of complicated urinary tract infection, produces urease, an essential virulence factor for this species. UreR, a member of the AraC/XylS family of transcriptional regulators, positively activates expression of the ure gene cluster in the presence of urea. To specifically evaluate the contribution of UreR to urease activity and virulence in the urinary tract, a ureR mutation was introduced into P. mirabilis HI4320 by homologous recombination. The isogenic ureR::aphA mutant, deficient in UreR production, lacked measurable urease activity. Expression was not detected in the UreR-deficient strain by Western blotting with monoclonal antibodies raised against UreD. Urease …
Measuring The Pore Sizes Of Sol-Gels Using Argon Effusion Techniques, Thomas J. Noel Ii, Krista Mincey, Catrena Higginbotham
Measuring The Pore Sizes Of Sol-Gels Using Argon Effusion Techniques, Thomas J. Noel Ii, Krista Mincey, Catrena Higginbotham
The Corinthian
The rate of effusion of argon through a sol-gel scaffold will be measured to determine the size of the pores. The effusion rate will then be used to correlate initial pore size to any pore shrinkage that occurs. We will attempt to control the initial pore size by using various-sized paraffin beads as templates throughout the organically modified tetramethoxysilane (TMOS) gel scaffold. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) will also be used to prop open the pore openings and keep them from closing during the drying process.
Low-Flow Helmholtz Resonator For Molar Mass Detection, Brackman Amy, Amanda Kea, Kenneth Mcgill
Low-Flow Helmholtz Resonator For Molar Mass Detection, Brackman Amy, Amanda Kea, Kenneth Mcgill
The Corinthian
A simple apparatus was constructed for an undergraduate physical chemistry laboratory to determine a mathematical model of wavelike motion. The apparatus was assembled by attaching an airflow valve connected to a tank of argon gas to a GC column, thus creating regulated airflow. The air was manipulated to gently flow over a small sensitive microphone that was attached to an inexpensive resonator. A model will be developed to measure the speed of sound that will lead to the measurement of the molar mass.

Determination Of H_{2}O_{2} Content Of Various Water Samples Using A Chemiluminescence Technique, Tuğba Tüğsüz, Elmas Gök, Serdar Ateş
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Hydrogen peroxide (H_{2}O_{2}) plays an important role in natural water samples. In this study H_{2}O_{2} concentrations were quantified in different water samples by chemiluminescence detection. This method was chosen because of its high sensitivity and suitability for determining low concentrations of H_{2}O_{2}. H_{2}O_{2} is introduced to the oxidation reaction of alkaline luminol solutions in the presence of Co^{2 + } ion catalyst. When these components are mixed, blue light (\lambda = 440 nm) is emitted. Maximum chemiluminescence intensity occurs within 2 s after mixing and is continuous for up to a few minutes, permitting accurate measurements at selected delay times. …

Differential Pulse Polarographic Determination Of Enalapril Maleate, Fi̇kri̇ye Elmali, Güzi̇n Alpdoğan, Şule Aycan, Sidika Sungur
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A differential pulse polarographic (DPP) method has been developed for the quantitative analysis of enalapril maleate. Enalapril maleate gives a peak at -1.4 V in methanol. A calibration curve was constructed for the 20 -100 \mu g ml^{-1} concentration range. As a reference method, a reversed phase high performance liquid chromatographic procedure has been developed. Commercially available tablets were analysed by the two methods. Statistical evaluations indicated that there was no significant difference between the mean values and precisions of the two methods at a 95\% confidence level.

A Novel Silver Recovery Method From Waste Photographic Films With Naoh Stripping, Nuri̇ Naki̇boğlu, Duygu Toscali, Gürel Ni̇sli̇
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A novel, simple, fast, cheap and pollution-free method was developed for recovering the silver from waste X-ray photographic films with NaOH stripping. The method has a number of advantages because it obviates the need for burning, oxidizing, electrolysis or purifying steps. Moreover, all experiments were carried out in the same flask, unlike other techniques. Silver recovery conditions were optimized and silver a purity level of 99\% was recovered. The metal impurities (Al, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb and Sn) in the recovered silver were determined using the ICP-MS method. The results were compared with results in …

Studies On The Mechanism Of Base-Catalyzed Decomposition Of Bicyclic Endoperoxides, Ebru Mete, Ramazan Altundaş, Hasan Seçen, Meti̇n Balci
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Kinetic studies were performed to clarify the Kornblum-Delamare reaction mechanism of bicyclic endoperoxides. Ascaridol and 1,4-diphenyl-2,3-dioxa-bicyclo[2.2.2]oct-5-ene, not having \alpha -protons, did not provide any reaction with bases. Reaction with different bases has revealed that reaction rates for the base-catalyzed decomposition of 2,3-dioxa-bicyclo[2.2.2]oct-5-ene depend strongly on the base strength. The stronger the base used, the faster the conversion rate. Reaction rate values k of endoperoxides with different skeletons were also studied with NEt_{3}. It has been noted that the strength of the base plays the dominant role in determining the rate of the reactions.

The chromatographic behaviour of liquid crystalline compounds benzylidene-p-aminobenzoic acid and 4-(p-methyl benzylidene)-p-aminobenzoic acid as stationary phases for the separation of dimethylphenol isomers was investigated. These isomers were analysed on benzylidene-p-aminobenzoic acid within a nematic range of 169-194 °C with a temperature interval of 5 °C. Better peak resolution was at a column temperature of 190 °C. The analysis was repeated on a 4-(p-methyl benzylidene)-p-aminobenzoic acid column at a nematic temperature of 256 °C, which represented the end of the nematic range, and gave the optimum peak resolution. It was found that isomer better separation was obtained at 20% loading for …
