Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The bromination of 1-cyclopent-1-en-1-ylbenzene (4) in different solvents and at different temperatures was accompanied by the evolution of hydrogen bromide and yielded 1-(5-bromocyclopent-1-en-1-yl)benzene (8). Further bromination of 8 gave exclusively 2R(S),5R(S)-1-(1,2,5-tribromocyclopentyl)benzene (11). The experimental results were compared with the theoretical ones based on semi-empirical (MM+ and AM1), Hartree-Fock (HF) and density functional theory (DFT). The formation of 11 was explained by the formation of a weakly bridged bromoniun ion of type 9.

The barrier properties of edible films prepared from polysaccharide polymer (locust bean gum) and various plasticisers (glycerol, propylene glycol, sorbitol, and polyethylene glycol 200) together with hydrophobic modifiers (stearopten and beeswax) were examined. It was determined that the films containing polyethylene glycol 200 (PEG 200) and sorbitol have the lowest water vapour permeability values and the films containing glycerol have the highest WVP values. It was found that the most reasonable of the studied plasticisers was PEG 200. Polysaccharide--based edible films have higher WVP values than those of lipid-- and protein--based edible films. In order to reduce the WVP of …
Determination Of Iron(Ii) Concentrations In Seawater Using Flow Injection Analysis And Chemiluminescence, Mark Keller Kinnan
Determination Of Iron(Ii) Concentrations In Seawater Using Flow Injection Analysis And Chemiluminescence, Mark Keller Kinnan
All Volumes (2001-2008)
Phytoplankton are a major consumer of carbon dioxide. In theory, if phytoplankton are limited in number, more carbon dioxide will be present in the atmosphere and contribute to the greenhouse effect. An increased concentration of iron would, therefore, promote phytoplankton blooms that would consume carbon dioxide. There would then be less carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to prevent heat from radiating away from earth. In 1996, an iron seeding experiment was performed in the open ocean to determine whether phytoplankton density would be increased. Phytoplankton rapidly increased in number. The research project results suggested that iron seeding the polar oceans …

Vibrational Spectroscopic Studies On Trans-1,4-Polychloroprene, V. Arjunan, S. Subramanian, S. Mohan
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectra of trans-1,4-polychloroprene have been recorded in the range of 4000-400 and 3500-100 cm^{-1}, respectively. In the present investigation, detailed assignments of the observed fundamental bands of trans-1,4-polychloroprene were analysed in terms of peak positions and relative intensities. In the hope of providing more effective information on the fundamental vibrations, a normal coordinate analysis was performed on trans-1,4-polychloroprene, by assuming C_{S} symmetry. The simple general valance force field (SGVFF) was employed in normal coordinate analysis and to calculate the potential energy distribution (PED) for each fundamental vibration. The PED contribution corresponding to each of the …

A procedure was assessed for obtaining an optimum amount of a micro-mesoporous material known as smectite from Reşadiye (Tokat/Turkey) bentonite. The procedure, which will permit a better economic evaluation of the Reşadiye reserves, is based on successive settlements of bentonite suspensions during various time intervals. To characterize the original bentonite, its fractions and the high purity smectite product, X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption-desorption techniques were used. The original bentonite contained 50% by mass sodium-rich smectite (NaS) and 10% by mass NaCa-smectite (NaCaS). It also contained illite, clinoptilolite, analcime, feldspar, calcite, dolomite, quartz …

The kinetics of oxidation of pyridylmethylsulphinylbenzimidazole [PMSB] by Ce(IV) in an aqueous perchloric acid medium at a constant ionic strength of 1.50 mol dm^{-3} were studied spectrophotometrically. The reaction showed first order kinetics with respect to Ce(IV) concentration and an apparent less than unit order dependence in [PMSB] and a zero order in [H^+]. The initial addition of products has no significant effect on the rate of the reaction. A possible mechanism is proposed here. The reaction constants involved in the mechanism have been computed. There is good agreement between the observed and calculated rate constants under different experimental conditions. …

The polymerization of 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) initiated by the redox system titanium(III)-dimethyl glyoxime (DMG) was studied in dimethyl formamide (DMF)-water (80:20 v/v) medium in the temperature range 290-310 K. The rate of polymerization (R_{p}) was investigated at various concentrations of reductant, oxidant, sulfuric acid, and monomer. Cyclic voltametric sensing of dimethylglyoxime under the kinetic conditions demonstrated its reduction behavior. From the obtained results, it was inferred that the polymerization reaction was initiated by an organic free radical arising from the titanium(III)-dimethylglyoxime redox system. Chain termination of the polymer took place predominantly by mutual coupling and small fraction by chain transfer mechanism …

Poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) was prepared electrochemically from p-xylene-bis(diethylsulphonium chloride) in a solvent-electrolyte couple of acetonitrile-tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TBAFB). The polymer obtained from the electrode surface was converted to PPV by the thermal elimination of diethyl sulfide, HCl and ethyl sulfide. PPV was also obtained chemically in order to investigate the effect of the synthetic method on the structure and electrical conductivity. The characterization of the polymers was carried out by means of fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetry analysis (TGA) techniques. The doping effect on the conductivity of the PPV was investigated by using different …
