Cerimetric Determination Of Propranolol In Bulk Drug Form And In Tablets, Kanakapura Basavaiah, Umakanthappa Chandrashekar, H. Chandrashekar Prameela

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Two simple, accurate and precise methods are described for the determination of propranolol hydrochloride with cerium(IV) sulphate. The titrimetric method is based on the oxidation of the drug by a known excess amount of cerium(IV) sulphate and back titration of the unconsumed oxidant with ammonium ferrous sulphate. In the spectrophotometric method, the unreacted cerium(IV) sulphate is treated with iron(II) sulphate, and the iron(III) sulphate produced is complexed with thiocyanate and measured at 480 nm, thereby permitting the determination of the amount of unreacted cerium(IV) sulphate. In both procedures, the amount of the reacted oxidant corresponds to the drug content. Different …

Application Of Ibx Method For The Synthesis Of Ketones From Carboxylic Acids, H. R. Ferhat Karabulut, Mesut Kaçan, Hasan Özyildirim

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Methoxy phenyl propionic acid and some derivatives are converted to ketones using a new method. All classical methods to obtain ketones from carboxylic acids via acid halide consistently gave very low yields and regularly generated intermolecular cyclisation products or polymeric materials. However, high ketones yields are obtained by using the new IBX method.

Photochemical Reactions Of \Alpha-Terpinene And Acenaphthene Under Concentrated Sunlight, Nesi̇be Avcibaşi, Siddik İçli̇, Andrew Gilbert

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

\alpha-Terpinene was successfully dehydrogenated to p-cymene in photocatalytic reaction with benzophenone and cupric ions under 40 suns concentrated sunlight irradiation, proving that photodehydrogenation reactions may be employed for the synthesis of fine chemicals under sunlight. Acenaphthene dehydrogenation under concentrated sunlight resulted in the minor formation of acenaphthylene and the quantitative formation of acenaphthenone when the solution was aerated. Stable benzylic-type radical intermediates are thought to lower the yield of dehydrogenation reactions.

Polyethyleneimine-Coated Capillaries For The Separation Of Dna By Capillary Electrophoresis, M. Sai̇d Nutku, F. Bedi̇a Eri̇m Berker

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A new capillary electrophoresis of DNA fragments has been achieved with the cooperative effects of the electrophoretic and electroosmotic mobilities realized via the polyethyleneimine (PEI) coating of the capillary walls. As a result, seven of the 11 different-sized DNA fragments have produced resolved CE peaks. Our results demonstrate that analyses of DNA constituents can be performed under a wide range of conditions by the appropriate tuning of the coating and filler within the capillary.

Search For A Nonelectrocyclic Cyclization Of Nitrosostyrene: Rearrangements Of Michael Adducts From Dmad And \Alpha-Dialkylamino Oximes, Necdet Coşkun, Nevi̇n Arikan

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The aza-Claisen rearrangement product of the Michael adducts 2 from \alpha-dialkylaminoacetophenone oximes and DMAD underwent fragmentation to give dialkylaminomaleate, and benzonitrile at reflux in acetonitrile. The fragmentation was assumed to proceed through an unstable 4H-1,2-oxazete 6. The same reaction performed at room temperature, in addition to the nitrile and maleate, gave the corresponding 2-(2-dialkylamino-1-phenylethylideneaminooxy)-but-2- enedioic acid dimethyl esters 8 and 9. Compounds 9 isomerized to 8 on heating in acetonitrile.

Molecular Mass And Dynamics In Pma-D₃ In The Glass Transition Region, Burak Metin, Frank D. Blum Jan 2003

Molecular Mass And Dynamics In Pma-D₃ In The Glass Transition Region, Burak Metin, Frank D. Blum

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The segmental dynamics through the glass transition region, by which the glassy polymer becomes rubbery, are not well understood. Free volume, thermodynamic and kinetic theories have been used to describe the phenomenon behind the glass transition and some of those theories were tested with computer simulations. Different experimental techniques, such as NMR, thermo-mechanical analysis (TMA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dilatometry and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) have all been also used to probe this important phenomena. Deuterium (2H) NMR has been a valuable tool for the investigation of the dynamics of macromolecules. Deuteration of macromolecules at specific locations on the chains …

A Hmm Based Semantic Analysis Framework For Sports Game Event Detection, Gu Xu, Yu-Fei Ma, Hong-Jiang Zhang, Shiqiang Yang Jan 2003

A Hmm Based Semantic Analysis Framework For Sports Game Event Detection, Gu Xu, Yu-Fei Ma, Hong-Jiang Zhang, Shiqiang Yang

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Video events detection or recognition is one of important tasks in semantic understanding of video content. Sports game video should be considered as a rule-based sequential signal. Therefore, it is reasonable to model sports events using hidden Markov models. In this paper, we present a generic, scalable and multilayer framework based on HMMs, called SG-HMMs (sports game HMMs), for sports game event detection. At the bottom layer of this framework, event HMMs output basic hypotheses based on low-level features. The upper layers are composed of composition HMMs, which add constraints on those hypotheses of the lower layer. Instead of isolated …

Simulation Of Dynamic Electrochemical Processes, John Cassidy

Articles

This work is designed to introduce electrochemists in a tutorial manner to the basics of modeling of electrochemical systems based primarily on diffusion equations. There is an introduction to analytical and numerical methods with examples taken from typical electrochemical experiments. The Laplace transform is used to derive the Cottrell equation and chronopotentiometry. The response of an electrode to a Gaussian concentration profile is detailed. Laplace’s equation is solved for a simple cell to determine the potential distribution. Discrete methods are employed to calculate the current time behavior following a potential step using the explicit finite difference method. Cyclic voltammetry is …

Effects Of A Yec Apologetics Class On Student Worldview, David A. Dewitt, Steve Deckard, Sharon E. Cargo Jan 2003

Effects Of A Yec Apologetics Class On Student Worldview, David A. Dewitt, Steve Deckard, Sharon E. Cargo

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Creationism is a significant component of an overall Christian worldview. A Creation Worldview Test (CWT) was administered to students both before and after completion of a required Apologetics course dealing with the creation/evolution controversy. Pre-test analysis revealed that incoming students tend to have a creationist worldview, however their CWT scores reflected a degree of uncertainty or neutrality on scientific creation and the age of the earth. Post-test analysis showed a significant shift toward a young earth creationist (YEC) view. Implications for teaching apologetics and development of a Creationist worldview based on a Six-day Young Earth perspective were explored and identified.

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Water-borne pollutants such as volatile organic compounds are a serious environmental concern, which has increased the demand for chemical sensing elements. Solidstate sensors based on catalytic gate devices are a subject of current research, however they are restricted in practical applications because of their inability to operate at room temperature. Conducting polymer FETs, which employ a conducting gate polymer, have received much attention due to their unique electronic and optical properties. Polythiophene is chosen as the semi-conductive gate polymer in this work. A functional group attached to the polythiophene is used to detect analytes (i.e., mercury in this work) of …

Heterogeneous Photocatalytic Reduction Of Ferrate(Vi) In Uv-Irradiated Titania Suspensions: Role In Enhancing Destruction Of Nitrogen-Containing Pollutants, Virender K. Sharma, Kurt Winkelmann, Yekaterina Krasnova, Changyoul Lee, Mary Sohn Jan 2003

Heterogeneous Photocatalytic Reduction Of Ferrate(Vi) In Uv-Irradiated Titania Suspensions: Role In Enhancing Destruction Of Nitrogen-Containing Pollutants, Virender K. Sharma, Kurt Winkelmann, Yekaterina Krasnova, Changyoul Lee, Mary Sohn

Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

The results of the heterogeneous photocatalytic reduction of Fe(VI) in UV-irradiated TiO2 suspensions are presented and suggest indirect observation of the formation of Fe(V) by the photoreduction of Fe(VI) with ecb- at TiO2 surfaces. Because Fe(V) selectively and rapidly oxidizes low reactivity pollutants with the production of the non-toxic by-product, Fe(III), the photocatalytic reduction of Fe(VI) has a role in pollution remediation processes. The experiments were conducted as a function of TiO2 suspension concentrations, Fe(VI) concentrations, and pH in basic media. The initial rate of Fe(VI) reduction gave a fractional order with respect to initial Fe(VI) concentrations and adheres to …

The Photochemistry Of Nitrous Acid In An Aqueous Matrix, Jay S. Ratliff '03 Jan 2003

The Photochemistry Of Nitrous Acid In An Aqueous Matrix, Jay S. Ratliff '03

Honors Projects

The thermal and photochemical decomposition of aqueous solutions of nitrous acid and nitrite ion were studied, with a focus on the production and subsequent reaction of hydroxyl radicals. The production of these radicals in aqueous solution may be determined indirectly by disappearance of nitrous acid, or more directly by their interaction with a radical scavenger. Benzene was used to scavenge hydroxyl radical and the products of reactions with hydroxyl radical as well as nitrous acid were characterized. The roles of temperature and dissolved gases were also examined.

Development Of A Simple Method To Detect And Quantify Benzoylecgonine, A Cocaine Metabolite, In Urine, Kylee E. Billings '03 Jan 2003

Development Of A Simple Method To Detect And Quantify Benzoylecgonine, A Cocaine Metabolite, In Urine, Kylee E. Billings '03

Honors Projects

Benzoylecgonine (BE) is the most abundant metabolite of cocaine found in the human body. Analysis of BE in urine by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry is the most common method currently used to detect cocaine abuse. This current method is costly and time consuming, so the investigation of an easier and more cost-effective approach is the goal of this research. Because BE is a zwitterion, it is highly soluble in water and very difficult to extract from urine. Once the pKa values of BE are determined, either the cation or anion form of BE can be formed from the zwitterion by adjusting …

Bismuth Compounds In Organic Synthesis. Deprotection Of Ketoximes Using Bismuth Bromide-Bismuth Triflate, Ram Mohan, Joshua Arnold, Patrick Hayes, Robert Kohaus Jan 2003

Bismuth Compounds In Organic Synthesis. Deprotection Of Ketoximes Using Bismuth Bromide-Bismuth Triflate, Ram Mohan, Joshua Arnold, Patrick Hayes, Robert Kohaus

Scholarship

Ketoximes undergo deprotection in CH3CN/acetone/H2O (3:6:1) in the presence of 20–40 mol% BiBr3/5 mol% Bi(OTf)3. Bismuth(III) salts are relatively non-toxic, insensitive to air and inexpensive. These features coupled with the use of a relatively non-toxic solvent system make this method an attractive alternative to existing routes for deprotection of ketoximes.

Bismuth Compounds In Organic Synthesis. Synthesis Of Resorcinarenes Using Bismuth Triflate, Ram Mohan, Katherine Peterson, Russell Smith Jan 2003

Bismuth Compounds In Organic Synthesis. Synthesis Of Resorcinarenes Using Bismuth Triflate, Ram Mohan, Katherine Peterson, Russell Smith

Scholarship

Bismuth triflate (5 mol%) smoothly catalyzes the condensation of aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes with resorcinol to give tetrameric cyclic products, resorcinarenes. With benzaldehyde, the product is obtained as a mixture of two diastereomers and the ratio of the diastereomers depends on reaction time. On the other hand, a single diastereomer is obtained with aliphatic aldehydes. The low toxicity and ease of handling of bismuth compounds coupled with fast reaction times make this method an attractive alternative to the existing methods for resorcinarene formation

Phylogenomic Identification Of Five New Human Homologs Of The Dna Repair Enzyme Alkb, Michal A. Kurowski, Ashok S. Bhagwat, Grzegorz Papaj, Janusz M. Bujnicki

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

Background

Combination of biochemical and bioinformatic analyses led to the discovery of oxidative demethylation – a novel DNA repair mechanism catalyzed by the Escherichia coli AlkB protein and its two human homologs, hABH2 and hABH3. This discovery was based on the prediction made by Aravind and Koonin that AlkB is a member of the 2OG-Fe2+ oxygenase superfamily.

Results

In this article, we report identification and sequence analysis of five human members of the (2OG-Fe2+) oxygenase superfamily designated here as hABH4 through hABH8. These experimentally uncharacterized and poorly annotated genes were not associated with the AlkB family …
