The cerium LIII-edge x-ray absorption near-edge spectra of the CexFe4-yCoySb12 compounds have been obtained at 295 K and unambiguously indicate that cerium is in the 4f1 electronic ground state for all values of 0.22≤x≤0.98 and 0.0≤y≤3.5. This stable trivalent state of cerium is in agreement with the proposed (CeFe4Sb12) 1-α(Co4Sb12)α, solid solution structure, in which the cerium atoms are always surrounded by twelve antimony first neighbors and six iron second neighbors, the observed magnetic properties of CeFe4Sb12 and …

Second-Harmonic And Sum-Frequency Imaging Of Organic Nanocrystals With Photon Scanning Tunneling Microscope, Yuzhen Shen, Jacek Swiatkiewicz, Jeffrey G. Winiarz, Przemyslaw P. Markowicz, Paras N. Prasad
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Second-harmonic generation and sum-frequency generation with photon scanning tunneling microscopy and shear-force detection are used to map the nonlinear optical response and the surface topograph of N-(4-nitrophenyl)-(L)-prolinol crystals with a subdiffraction-limited resolution. The domain-size dependence of the spatial feature is obtained, which shows the local orientational distribution of the optical near field radiated by nonlinear nanocrystals and reveals the difference between nanoscopic and macroscopic second-order optical nonlinearities of molecular crystals.

The urbanized shore areas of Long Island Sound in the vicinity of New Haven, Connecticut (USA) have a long history of exposure to point and non-point sources of pollution, New Haven having been one of the birthplaces of the industrial revolution. As an unintended consequence of such activities, the region's sedimentary systems have incorporated a complex mixture of organic and inorganic contaminants. With its long and varied pollution history and the multiplicity of sedimentary environments (fluvial, estuarine, intertidal, marsh, etc.) present in a compact geographical area, the region is ideal natural laboratory for field testing new contamination assessment techniques. The …

Detection Of Solid Pigment In Dermatoscopy Images Using Texture Analysis, Murali Anantha, William V. Stoecker, Randy Hays Moss
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Background/aims: Epiluminescence microscopy (ELM), also known as dermoscopy or dermatoscopy, is a non-invasive, in vivo technique, that permits visualization of features of pigmented melanocytic neoplasms that are not discernable by examination with the naked eye. ELM offers a completely new range of visual features. One such feature is the solid pigment, also called the blotchy pigment or dark structureless area. Our goal was to automatically detect this feature and determine whether its presence is useful in distinguishing benign from malignant pigmented lesions.
Methods: Here, a texture-based algorithm is developed for the detection of solid pigment. The factors d and a …

The Mössbauer spectra of Ce2Fe17Hx, where x=0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, have been measured and analyzed between 4.2 and 295 K. Because Ce2Fe17 exhibits a helical magnetic order between 225 and 90 K and a fan magnetic order below 90 K, its Mössbauer spectra were fit with a distribution of hyperfine fields and θ angles for four of the eight magnetically inequivalent sites. Because the hydrides exhibit a magnetization within the basal plane of the hexagonal cell, their Mössbauer spectra were fit with seven sextets. The four isomer shifts …

Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, Acetaminophen, Cyclooxygenase 2, And Fever, Daniel L. Simmons, David Wagner, Kenneth Westover
Faculty Publications
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are frequently used antipyretic agents that most probably exert their antifever effect by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX)–2. Thus, COX-2–selective drugs or null mutation of the COX-2 gene reduce or prevent fever. Acetaminophen is antipyretic and analgesic, as are NSAIDs, but it lacks the anti-inflammatory and anticoagulatory properties of these drugs. This has led to the speculation that a COX variant exists that is inhibitable by acetaminophen. An acetaminophen-inhibitable enzyme is inducible in the mouse J774.2 monocyte cell line. Induction of acetaminophen-inhibitable prostaglandin E2 synthesis parallels induction of COX-2. Thus, inhibition of pharmacologically distinct COX-2 enzyme activity by …
Fourier Transform Raman Spectroscopy For Process Control In The Petroleum Industry, Kent Lawson Wise
Fourier Transform Raman Spectroscopy For Process Control In The Petroleum Industry, Kent Lawson Wise
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
As early as 1950, Raman spectroscopy was proposed as a method to determine aromatics and olefins in hydrocarbon mixtures. Until recently, extensive use of Raman spectroscopy in the characterization of hydrocarbons has not been practical due to several limitations. One early limitation to Raman analysis was the absence of a high intensity and stable excitation source. This problem has been overcome with the advent of lasers. Another limitation was the presence of fluorescence in hydrocarbon fuels when excited by visible lasers. However, the development of Fourier-transform Raman spectrometers now allows Raman spectra to be collected using near-IR lasers (e.g …

Copper Complexation And Speciation In The Western South And Equatorial Atlantic Ocean, John A. Consolvo
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Presented here are the first data on copper complexation and speciation in the South Atlantic Ocean. Samples were collected at six vertical profile stations and along the surface (1m) transect during the 1996 IOC Baseline Contaminant Survey. Copper complexation measurements were made for the surface transect (1m) samples and three of the six vertical profile stations (1m - ~500m) using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) with a thin mercury film, rotating glassy carbon disk electrode (TMFRGCDE).
A strong organic copper complexing ligand (L1; log K' cuL1/cu2+ > 11. 8 ± 0 .4) was detected in 57% of all …

We characterized a novel 28S rRNA cleavage in cells infected with the murine coronavirus mouse hepatitis virus (MHV). The 28S rRNA cleavage occurred as early as 4 h postinfection (p.i.) in MHV-infected DBT cells, with the appearance of subsequent cleavage products and a decrease in the amount of intact 28S rRNA with increasing times of infection; almost all of the intact 28S rRNA disappeared by 24 h p.i. In contrast, no specific 18S rRNA cleavage was detected in infected cells. MHV-induced 28S rRNA cleavage was detected in all MHV-susceptible cell lines and all MHV strains tested. MHV replication was required …
Thermodynamics Of Water Superheated In The Microwave Oven, Ben H. Erné, Penny A. Snetsinger
Thermodynamics Of Water Superheated In The Microwave Oven, Ben H. Erné, Penny A. Snetsinger
Chemistry & Physics Faculty Publications
A simple visual demonstration is proposed that provokes thinking about the elementary thermodynamics of heating and boiling. Water is conveniently heated above its normal boiling point in a microwave oven in a glass microwave oven teapot. Water stops boiling soon after heating is interrupted, but subsequently added rough particles can still act as nucleation centers for a brief, spectacular burst of steam bubbles. The heat to make those steam bubbles obviously comes from the water itself, so that one can conclude that the boiling water was superheated, which is confirmed with a thermometer. Besides illustrating chemical thermodynamics, the demonstration also …

We have used x-ray powder diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry to study the crystalline structures and thermal behavior of the 6,6-cyclopropane isomer of C61H2. At room temperature, the C61H2 cyclopropane molecules, like those of the 6,5-annulene isomer and C60O epoxide, are orientationally disordered and crystallize on a face-centered-cubic lattice such that their methylene groups are statistically disordered among the octahedral voids. Unlike 6,5−C61H2 and C60O, the low-temperature structure is not Pa3¯, but rather a low-symmetry orthorhombic lattice in which a≈b

It is discovered that for an n-gonal ice nanotube built from stacking a single type of n-gonal rings of water, the unit cell consists of two stacked n-gonal rings. In one ring the O–H bonds of water molecules line up clockwise whereas in the other ring the O-H bonds line up counterclockwise. Among the n-gonal ice nanotubes examined, the pentagonal or hexagonal ice nanotube appears to be the most stable.

We used an airborne Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (AFTIR), coupled to a flow-through, air-sampling cell, on a King Air B-90 to make in situ trace gas measurements in isolated smoke plumes from four, large, boreal zone wildfires in interior Alaska during June 1997. AFTIR spectra acquired near the source of the smoke plumes yielded excess mixing ratios for 13 of the most common trace gases: water, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, nitric oxide, formaldehyde, acetic acid, formic acid, methanol, ethylene, acetylene, ammonia and hydrogen cyanide. Emission ratios to carbon monoxide for formaldehyde, acetic acid, and methanol were 2.2±0.4%, 1.3±0.4%, and …

Rapid Identification Of The Bacterial Pathogens Responsible For Urinary Tract Infections Using Direct Injection Ce, Daniel W. Armstrong, Jeffrey M. Schneiderheinze
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The use of high-performance capillary electrokinetic techniques for the separation, identification, and quantitation of intact microbes represents a new frontier for separation science. In this work, it is demonstrated that pathogens most responsible for urinary tract infections can be distinguished from one another after direct injection of untreated urine. High efficiencies (often exceeding 1 000 000 plates/m) and short analysis times (< 10 min) are characteristics of this approach. The concentration of the urine matrix appears to be able to cause a small, but definite, change in the electroosmotic flow velocity. This high-efficiency separation-based approach could prove to be invaluable for the diagnosis and tracking of certain diseases. It also could form the basis for a variety of rapid microbial assays.

Nickel cobaltite, NiCo2O4, has been synthesized by sol–gel and thermal decomposition techniques and the surface composition studied with Auger (AES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies (XPS). The asintroduced samples are near-stoichiometric, although samples fabricated by thermal decomposition tend to be oxygen-defi cient by approximately 25% of the predicted spinel concentration. Nickel 2p XPS indicates the predominant form of the metal to be Ni2+, with the cations located in octahedral sites. The cobalt cations are equally divided between tetrahedral and octahedral sites as Co3+. The oxygen XP 1s spectrum is composed of two peaks, …

Electroweak Quantum Chemistry For Possible Precursor Molecules In The Evolution Of Biomolecular Homochirality, Robert Berger, Martin Quack, Gregory S. Tschumper
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The unified 'electroweak' theory of the electromagnetic and weak nuclear interactions in physics predicts a small energy difference (ΔE(pv)) between the left- and right-handed enantiomers of chiral molecules. Thus, electroweak theory provides one of several possible explanations for the origin of biomolecular homochirality (nature's preference for L-amino acids and D-monosaccharides). Recent systematic electroweak quantum-chemical studies find ΔE(pv) to be an order of magnitude larger than previously anticipated, which has sparked renewed interest in the subject. The present paper addresses, for the first time, the question of the relative stability of certain possible prebiotic precursor molecules suggested in the work of …

The conductivity of water having parts per billion concentrations of oxygen, hydrogen, and bicarbonate was measured while the water was irradiated by a low-pressure mercury vapor lamp, which was turned on and off periodically. A cell normally used for measurement of dissolved oxidizable carbon was modified for use in these measurements. When the lamp is turned on, the conductivity increases (sometimes decreases) with a time constant of about 50 ms; when the lamp is turned off, the conductivity changes in the opposite direction with a time constant of about 275 ms, but does not return to its value before the …

Collagen molecules in articular cartilage have an exceptionally long lifetime, which makes them susceptible to the accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). In fact, in comparison to other collagen-rich tissues, articular cartilage contains relatively high amounts of the AGE pentosidine. To test the hypothesis that this higher AGE accumulation is primarily the result of the slow turnover of cartilage collagen, AGE levels in cartilage and skin collagen were compared with the degree of racemization of aspartic acid (% D-Asp, a measure of the residence time of a protein). AGE (Ne- (carboxymethyl)lysine, Ne-(carboxyethyl)lysine, and pentosidine) and % D-Asp concentrations increased …

The temperature dependence of the isomer shift of α-iron between 4.2 and 990 K and of Dy3Fe5O12 between 4.2 and 550 K has been analyzed in terms of the Debye model for the second-order Doppler shift, a model in which an additional parameter, the effective vibrating mass, is included. This mass is found equal to 57 g/mol in the ionic compound, Dy3Fe5O12, and equal to 60 g/mol in metallic α-iron. The deviation of this mass from 57 g/mol is a measure of the covalency of the metallic bonding in …

In a recent experiment, we have for the first time studied near-barrier and sub-barrier fusion of the exotic "Borromean" nucleus 6He with 209Bi and found that the sub-barrier fusion of this system is exceptionally enhanced, implying a 20% reduction in the nominal fusion barrier. It was suggested that this striking effect might he due to coupling to positive Q-value neutron transfer channels, leading to "neutron flow" and consequent neck formation between the projectile and target. The results of a new experiment using the radioactive nuclear beam facility at the University of Notre Dame to measure fast ⍺-particle emission from 6He …

The association of HLA class I heavy chains with ß2-microglobulin (ß2m) changes their antigenic profile. As a result, Abs react with either ß2m-free or ß2m-associated HLA class I heavy chains. An exception to this rule is the mAb TP25.99, which reacts with both ß2m-associated and ß2m-free HLA class I heavy chains. The reactivity with ß2m-associated HLA class I heavy chains is mediated by a conformational determinant expressed on all HLA-A, -B, and -C Ags. This determinant has been mapped to amino acid residues 194–198 in the …

How Does Cross-Linking Effect The Thermal Stability Of Polyisoprene, Qiang Yao, Charles A. Wilkie
Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
Polyisoprene can be cross-linked by an initial lithiation followed by reaction with both monochloro compounds and dichloro compounds. The monochloro compounds effect crosslinking through a lithium-chlorine exchange route while the use of dichloro compounds links the PIP chains with the spacer between the two chlorine atoms. A significant amount of char is produced from compounds which have been cross-linked with aromatic dihalides while aliphatic dihalides do not produce significant char.

Mechanisimic Study Of Fes Electrode Process, Cong-Sheng Guan, Shu-Zhen Duan
Journal of Electrochemistry
The mechanism of FeS electrode process has been investigated by using linear cyclic voltammetry. The electrode porcess of FeS is accompanied with the formation and dissolution of insoluble FeS and controlled by ohmic resistance. The peak currents and potentials on the cyclic voltammograms are dependent lineally on the square root of the scan rates. According to this, an ohmic resistance controlling model of FeS electrode has been put forward, and the relative functions between peak currents or potentials and scan rates have been deduced. The theoretical deduction is corresponding to the results of the experiments.

Cathodic Indirect Oxidation Of Organic Compounds(Ⅱ)——Cathodic Indirect Epoxidation Of Olefine, Xue-Ying Zhang, Bao-Qiu Cui, Deng-Ping Gu, Wei Li
Journal of Electrochemistry
We described a novel cathodic indirect epoxidation system in which O2 was first cathodically reduced to H2O2. Then VO(acac)2 was oxidized by H2O2 homogeneously to VO(acac)2OOH which was used to epoxidize some olefine such as maleic, fumaric and crotonic acids. Many affecting factors on the current efficiency were optimized. The research will contribute to the developments of organic electrosynthesis.
