Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

The USS Arizona has remained submerged in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, since the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941. The ship presents a potential hazard from fuel oil still present in the ship’s hull. As an important factor in management decisions, the effect of corrosion after nearly 65 years is being studied to determine the integrity of the ship’s structure. Coupon samples from the hull revealed decreasing corrosion rates from ~1 to 3 mpy (0.03 to 0.08 mm/y) from just below the water surface to the mudline. This is about one-third of that expected in the absence of biofouling or concretion. …

Halogen bonding between halide sites (in substituted organic molecules or inorganic halides) and Lewis bases is a rapidly progressing area of exploration. Investigations of this phenomenon have improved our understanding of weak intermolecular interactions and suggested new possibilities in supramolecular chemistry and crystal engineering. The capacity for halogen bonding is investigated at the MP2(full) level of theory for 100 compounds, including all 80 MH4-nXn systems (M = C, Si, Ge, Sn, and Pb; X = F, Cl, Br, and I). The charge redistribution in these molecules and the (in)stability of the σ-hole at X as …

Supramolecular Self-Assembly Strategies Involving Water Soluble Calixarenes., Irene Ling Jan 2010

Supramolecular Self-Assembly Strategies Involving Water Soluble Calixarenes., Irene Ling

Student Works (2010-2019)

Fundamental investigations of host-guest interactions on the supramolecular self-assembly involving water-soluble p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene, with a series of imidazolium-based cations and pyrrolidinium cation with variable alkyl chain lengths, which featured extensively in ionic liquids have been established. Combinatorial studies incorporating multiple components concerning p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene, imidazolium cations or pyrrolidinium cation, phosphonium cations and lanthanide ions have been developed, which yielded diverse solid state motifs with a common structural characteristic that the imidazolium or pyrrolidinium cation resides in the cavity of the calixarene. Shorter terminal alkyl chain of mono-imidazolium molecules, i.e. n-ethyl and n-butyl imidazoliums are confined in the „molecular capsule‟, being encapsulated by …

Corrosion Of Steel Shipwrecks In The Marine Environment: Uss Arizona—Part 2, Donald L. Johnson, Brent M. Wilson, James D. Carr, Matthew A. Russell, Larry E. Murphy, David L. Conlin

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

This article is a continuation of Part 1 (October 2006 MP) on the USS Arizona hull. It discusses additional methods being investigated for use in determining corrosion rates with a minimal impact on the existing structure. Marine biofouling (concretion) has accumulated on the hull. Concretion samples have been studied using x-ray diffraction, environmental electron microscopy, and corrosion potential (Ecorr) to characterize the relationship between concretion and the steel substrate. The data presented in this study confirm the viability of concretion analysis as a minimum-impact procedure to estimate the corrosion rate of mild steel in seawater.

Shorter Still: Compressing C-C Single Bonds, Gerarso Martinez-Guajardo, Kelling J. Donald, Bernard K. Wittmaack, Miguel Angel Vazquez, Gabriel Merino

Chemistry Faculty Publications

How short can a C-C single bond get? The bonding in a set of molecules that are related structurally to previously synthesized or theoretically examined systems with short C-C bonds is investigated. According to calculations, a single C-C bond could be compressed to 1.313 A! To the best of our knowledge, this is the shortest single C-C bond reported to date. This shortening is a consequence of a change in the C-C-C bond angle, θ, to minimize strain in the cages and an effort to offset the tension in the surrounding bridges.

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

The corrosion behavior of electrochemically deposited copper thin films in deaerated and non-deaerated commercial cleaning solution containing HF has been investigated. Thin-film copper dissolution and reaction kinetics were investigated by monitoring Cu2+ , employing inductively coupled plasma–mass spectroscopy, and the oxidation states of copper on Si wafer surface, employing X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was determined that the reaction kinetics is first order with respect to both HF and oxygen concentrations. A kinetic scheme involving reduction of oxygen and oxidation of Cu0 and Cu1+ is proposed, which is consistent with the experimentally determined reaction kinetic orders and the …

Synthesis Of Diruthenium Complexes As Connectable Molecular Components, George Ling

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

There have been great advances in electronics and technology within the last few years. The field of nanotechnology can further improve electronics in terms of efficiency, size and costs. There exist nanowires and nanotransistors that could accomplish this, however there exists no good method of connecting the two components together. Using the bottom-up approach and chemical synthesis, the goal is to synthesize molecular jumper cables and connectable molecular components (CMCs).

The template of the CMC will have two ruthenium (Ru) metal centers connected by a conjugated, organic bridge. Coordinated to the ruthenium metal centers will be different ligands that affect …

The Effective Potential Energy Surfaces Of The Nonadiabatic Collision B(2PJA) + H2(1Σ+G,Ν,J) ↔ B(2PJ'A) + H2(1Σ+G,Ν',J'), Matthew B. Garvin Mar 2009

The Effective Potential Energy Surfaces Of The Nonadiabatic Collision B(2PJA) + H2(1Σ+G,Ν,J) ↔ B(2PJ'A) + H2(1Σ+G,Ν',J'), Matthew B. Garvin

Theses and Dissertations

Effective potential energy surfaces (PESs) are calculated for a nonadiabatic collision . This calculation employed 1 2A', 2 2A' and 1 2A" adiabatic PESs numerically calculated at the state-averaged multiconfigurational self-consistent field (SA-MCSCF)/configuration interaction (CI) level for several values of the H2 bond length, H2 orientation angle, and boron distance. The associated nonadiabatic coupling terms (NACTs) were calculated from the SA-MCSCF/CI wave functions using analytic gradient techniques. A line integral through the NACTs was then used to determine the adiabatic-to-diabatic mixing angle required to transform from the 1 2A' and 2 2A' …

Beta-Peptides With Improved Affinity For Hdm2 And Hdmx, Elizabeth A. Harker, Douglas S. Daniels, Danielle A. Guarracino, Alanna S. Schepartz

Chemistry Faculty Publications

We previously described a series of 314-helical β-peptides that bind the hDM2 protein and inhibit its interaction with a p53-derived peptide in vitro. Here we present a detailed characterization of the interaction of these peptides with hDM2 and report two new β-peptides in which non-natural side chains have been substituted into the hDM2-recognition epitope. These peptides feature both improved affinity and inhibitory potency in fluorescence polarization and ELISA assays. Additionally, one of the new β-peptides also binds the hDM2-related protein, hDMX, which has been identified as another key therapeutic target for activation of the p53 pathway in tumors.

Preparation And Characterization Of Some Substituted Benzyl N-Nitrosocarbamates Containing An N-2-(Methylthio)Ethyl Or A Bis(2-Aminoethyl)Sulfide Functionality, Satya Venkata, Eric Shamo, Vladimir Benin

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The synthesis and characterization of some substituted benzyl N-nitrosocarbamates with an N-2-(methylthio)ethyl or a bis(2-aminoethyl)sulfide functionality is reported, as a part of a long-term goal to design and prepare novel photolabile structures that could be used as substances for controlled release of alkylating and/or crosslinking agents. The synthesis was accomplished by reaction of benzyl chloroformates with the corresponding amines, resulting in the preparation of carbamates. The latter were subsequently nitrosated, utilizing two different N-nitrosation methods, to yield the target structures.

Androgen-Stimulated Udp-Glucose Dehydrogenase Expression Limits Prostate Androgen Availability Without Impacting Hyaluronan Levels, Qin Wei, Robert Galbenus, Ashraf Raza, Ronald Cerny, Melanie A. Simpson Jan 2009

Androgen-Stimulated Udp-Glucose Dehydrogenase Expression Limits Prostate Androgen Availability Without Impacting Hyaluronan Levels, Qin Wei, Robert Galbenus, Ashraf Raza, Ronald Cerny, Melanie A. Simpson

Ronald Cerny Publications

UDP-glucose dehydrogenase (UGDH) oxidizes UDP-glucose to UDP-glucuronate, an essential precursor for production of hyaluronan (HA), proteoglycans, and xenobiotic glucuronides. High levels of HA turnover in prostate cancer are correlated with aggressive progression. UGDH expression is high in the normal prostate even though HA accumulation is virtually undetectable. Thus, its normal role in the prostate may be to provide precursors for glucuronosyltransferase enzymes, which inactivate and solubilize androgens by glucuronidation. In this report, we quantified androgen dependence of UGDH, glucuronosyltransferase, and HA synthase expression. Androgen dependent and independent human prostate cancer cell lines were used to test the effects of UGDH …

A Multi-Step Nmr Screen For The Identification And Evaluation Of Chemical Leads For Drug Discovery, Kelly A. Mercier, Matthew D. Shortridge, Robert Powers

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

A multi-step NMR based screening assay is described for identifying and evaluating chemical leads for their ability to bind a target protein. The multi-step NMR assay provides structure-related information while being an integral part of a structure based drug discovery and design program. The fundamental principle of the multi-step NMR assay is to combine distinct 1D and 2D NMR techniques, in such a manner, that the inherent strengths and weakness associated with each technique is complementary to each other in the screen. By taking advantage of the combined strengths of 1D and 2D NMR experiments, it is possible to minimize …

Patent: Cell-Permeable Miniature Proteins, Alanna S. Schepartz, Douglas S. Daniels, Betsy Smith

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Abstract: The present invention generally relates to miniature proteins, including miniature proteins that are permeable to cells. Certain aspects of the invention are generally related to miniature proteins, such as avian pancreatic polypeptide (aPP), modified such that the miniature proteins are permeable to cells. For instance, a portion of the aPP, such as the alpha helix region and/or the type II polyproline helix region, may be modified to render the region substantially cationic. As an example, one or more residues may be substituted with cationic amino acid residues such as arginine. The miniature proteins may also have additional functions, such …

Localised Galvanic Corrosion Processes In Thermal Spray Coated/Cast Aluminium Alloy Systems, David Culliton, Tony Betts, David Kennedy Nov 2008

Localised Galvanic Corrosion Processes In Thermal Spray Coated/Cast Aluminium Alloy Systems, David Culliton, Tony Betts, David Kennedy

Conference Papers

Cast Aluminium Alloys, because of the propensity of aluminium to react with impurities and alloying elements, are prone to developing IM impurities during the solidification process. These IM phases can act, in some fluids, as initiation sites for localised corrosion processes, resulting in degradation phenomena, such as pitting. Whilst Thermal Spray coatings can improve the wear resistance of Cast Aluminium Alloys, their corrosion performance may be hampered by the presence of through porosity within the coating.

The present work details some preliminary studies of the localised corrosion processes occurring at the interface area between a Thermal Spray coating and a …

Inverse Velocity Dependence Of Vibrationally Promoted Electron Emission From A Metal Surface, N. H. Nahler, J. D. White, Jerry L. Larue, Daniel J. Auerbach, Alec M. Wodtke

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

All previous experimental and theoretical studies of molecular interactions at metal surfaces show that electronically nonadiabatic influences increase with molecular velocity. We report the observation of a nonadiabatic electronic effect that follows the opposite trend: The probability of electron emission from a low–work function surface—Au(111) capped by half a monolayer of Cs—increases as the velocity of the incident NO molecule decreases during collisions with highly vibrationally excited NO(X2π½, V = 18; V is the vibrational quantum number of NO), reaching 0.1 at the lowest velocity studied. We show that these results are consistent with a vibrational …

Surface Charge Effects Involved In The Control Of Stability Of Sols Comprising Uniform Cholesterol Particles, Vuk Uskoković

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

The reported is a method for the preparation of stable dispersions of narrowly dispersed cholesterol crystals, which may provide an excellent model for the aggregation studies thereof. The effects of experimental parameters that include concentration, pH, ionic strength, temperature, and aging on the resulting morphologies are acknowledged. Regardless of the cause of destabilization, the multilayered aggregates of cholesterol particles are formed by “face-to-face” stacking of the original platelets, as promoted by higher surface charge density on particle sides comparing to their faces. In accordance with the crucial involvement of surface charge effects in stabilization of cholesterol dispersions produced hereby, aggregation …
