Investigation Of The Platinum-Rich Portion Of The Platinum-Tantalum Phase Diagram, Bob Dean Browning Aug 1961

Investigation Of The Platinum-Rich Portion Of The Platinum-Tantalum Phase Diagram, Bob Dean Browning

Theses and Dissertations

The Pt-Ta binary system was investigated at two isotherms;1000°C and 1500°C, and at eleven alloy compositions in the range of 50 to 100 atomic percent platinum. The alloys were examined by x-ray diffraction and metallography. Three intermetallic compounds, Pt2Ta, Pt3Ta, and Pt4Ta were found to exist in this composition range. The Pt4Ta intermetallic appeared only at the 1500°C isotherm. Platinum dissolved tantalum substitutionally to 90 atomic percent at 1500 °C and to approximately 80 atomic percent at 1000 °C.

Various Ways Of Preventing The Formation Of Scale In Sea Water Evaporators, James M. Stanek Apr 1955

Various Ways Of Preventing The Formation Of Scale In Sea Water Evaporators, James M. Stanek

Bachelors’ Theses

Previous work carried out at Marquette University has proved that the formation of scale in sea water evaporators can be prevented if such things as dehydrated alfalfa foliage or dehydrated corn, oats, peas, and grass foliage are added to the feed sea water. It has also been proved that the maturity of the plant from which the corn foliage has been stripped varies the scale preventing ability of the foliage, and that the storing of the corn foliage increases its scale preventing ability. The object of this work is to determine what effect the combination of various types of stainless …

The Analysis Of Brass And Bronze For Aluminum, Gordon Kenneth Gregory Jun 1952

The Analysis Of Brass And Bronze For Aluminum, Gordon Kenneth Gregory

Bachelors’ Theses

The problem of the analysis of brass and bronze for aluminum is one that has received the attention of analytical chemists for decades. The problem was originally proposed to me by Mr. H.E. Gregory of the American Brass Company. Since there appears to be no direct way of determining aluminum in brass and bronze, this thesis will concern itself with a comparison of four methods of determination with emphasis on their relative advantages and disadvantages. The gathering and arranging of the steps in the methods were done by the author, although the steps themselves have been described in chemical literature.

A Study Of The Equilibrium Distribution Of A Solute Between Two Immiscible Solvents, Francis A. Smith May 1951

A Study Of The Equilibrium Distribution Of A Solute Between Two Immiscible Solvents, Francis A. Smith

Bachelors’ Theses

Because of the wide application of Distribution Law, for it should hold for the distribution of a dissolved substance between any two phases, for instance, liquid-liquid, gas-liquid, liquid-solid, and so forth, this subject was choosen for further investigation. The tendency for a solute to distribute itself between two immiscible solvents, so that the concentration ratio is a constant, is a direct consequence of the thermodynamic requirements for equilibrium. The reactions of various organic and inorganic acids distributed between water and several organic solvents will be studied.

Determination Of Saponification Rate By Change In Hydrogen Ion Concentration Measured With Quinhydrone And Glass Electrodes, Richard Porter Jan 1951

Determination Of Saponification Rate By Change In Hydrogen Ion Concentration Measured With Quinhydrone And Glass Electrodes, Richard Porter

Bachelors’ Theses

The measurement or hydrogen ion concentration is becoming more important in all the fields of chemistry since the states or many chemical systems can to some extent be defined by their hydrogen ion concentration. If the hydrogen ion concentration or a particular solution can be measured accurately, in many cases other important relations and quantities may be determined. Methods or measurement are therefore important instruments or investigation.

When an ester is saponified by an alkali, the hydrogen ion concentration increases as the reaction proceeds. Thus, it the hydrogen ion concentration can be calculated at different intervals of time, some knowledge …

Concrete And Cement Surface Coatings, Gabriel J. Popovich May 1941

Concrete And Cement Surface Coatings, Gabriel J. Popovich

Bachelors’ Theses

It has been with difficulty that precise information of any kind regarding the surface coating of concrete and cement finishes had been found. In fact, there was limited information to be found after 1930. Having but a short time to conduct any research, it was impossible to delve too deeply into this branch of the thesis. It is sincerely hoped that in the very near future a more thorough, extensive and comprehensive study can be made on this subject. The purpose of this thesis is to determine the best composition of concrete and the best surface coating for it and …

An Experimental Study Of The Destruction Distillation Of Corn Cobs, Wendall Lee Perry May 1941

An Experimental Study Of The Destruction Distillation Of Corn Cobs, Wendall Lee Perry

Bachelors’ Theses

The utilization of waste products is daily becoming more and more important. It has always been a big problem of industry to utilize its waste material; and as a result, limitless effort has been spent in the attempt to stress utility and economy in all forms of production. Under ordinary circumstances, the utilization of many waste products has been disregarded because of the large expense involved; but in critical times such as the present, expense becomes a secondary issue, and the actual production of necessary material becomes foremost. It is true that the waste connected with large industries is very …

A Study Of Resins From Carbohydrates, Edward F. Sullivan May 1941

A Study Of Resins From Carbohydrates, Edward F. Sullivan

Bachelors’ Theses

The availability of large amounts of carbohydrates, and the need in the past years of larger markets for the available supplies of sugar have lead a number of sugar companies to investigate the possibilities of synthetic resins from carbohydrates. Although in the last ten or twelve years, a number of steps have been taken in the investigation of sugar resins, the information available has been restricted to a few patents. Consequently, information on the chemistry of the problem has been neglected. Thus, this work, for the most part, covers partially the possibilities of producing alkyd resins from saccharides, as well …

A Comparison Between Saponification And Iodine Values And Melting Point Curves For Mixtures Of Various Natural Waxes And Halowax 1012, William Kenneth Watts

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis 1s concerned with the nature of the action of the lowering of the melting point of the various natural waxes by the addition of Halowax. The problem was suggested by the work of Louis Kroening in his thesis, "The Effect of Halowax 1012, 1013, and 1014 on the Melting Points of the Various Waxes", and also by that of Joseph M. Sevenich in his thesis, "An Investigation of Halowaxes in Trinary Wax Mixtures". The former showed conclusively that the presence of Halowax in a wax mixture invariably lowered the melting point of the natural wax. The latter showed …

A Study Of The Proteolytic Activity Of The Enzyme Papain On Various Brands Of Gelatine, Mary Christella Zeszuto Aug 1939

A Study Of The Proteolytic Activity Of The Enzyme Papain On Various Brands Of Gelatine, Mary Christella Zeszuto

Bachelors’ Theses

The measurement of the ·viscosity of liquids by means of capillary tubes has been carried on for more than a hundred years. It was not, however, until 1846 that the results of Poiseuille's research were given to the public. For the comprehensive study he made of the problem, the concept of the laws controlling viscometry flow is attributed to him. The study of the same problem. was continued by many others in subsequent years. Their results, in general, verify the principles given by Poiseuille, but corrections attributed to conditions other than viscous flow have been suggested. These involve drainage, liquid …

A Method For Comparing And Measuring The Drying Time Of Glues, William C. Strutz Aug 1939

A Method For Comparing And Measuring The Drying Time Of Glues, William C. Strutz

Bachelors’ Theses

The measurements or quality in glue testing are arbitrary and are of value only when compared to a standard glue or when comparing one glue to another. Glues have been used for hundreds of years, but it has been only in the last forty or fifty years that any scientific investigations of any consequence have been made. Prior to this time glues were made by rule of thumb by practical men who learned the art of glue making from other practical men in the business and by contact with the industry. "When the United States entered the Great War and …

A Study Of The Gelation Of Several Paraffins In Various Solutions, Joseph John Wocasek May 1937

A Study Of The Gelation Of Several Paraffins In Various Solutions, Joseph John Wocasek

Bachelors’ Theses

In the selection of various waxes for commercial use, it has long been the custom to depend solely upon melting-point for property determination. Thus, for example, all paraffin waxes which had a melting range between 50 and 65 degrees centigrade, were thought to have much the same properties and that any or the commercial paraffins of this range would therefore impart the same characteristics to the product in which they were to be used. But with increased use, these waxes have come under more careful observation and experimentation. Very little data has as yet been released for publication but already …

A Study Of The Products Of The Reaction Between Stannous And Arsenate Ions In Silicic Acid Gels, Frank K. Thompson Jan 1936

A Study Of The Products Of The Reaction Between Stannous And Arsenate Ions In Silicic Acid Gels, Frank K. Thompson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The fact that characteristic crystalline products result upon the diffusion of arsenate ions into silicic acid gel which has been impregnated with stannous ions has been known by the Pacific Chemistry Department for some time. The optimum conditions with regards to heat and hydrogen ion concentration have been determined. The purpose of this investigation was to study the products of the reaction. First to determine whether or not the silicic acid itself combined with the stannous and arsenate. ions in the formation of the crystalline product, and second to determine its chemical composition.

A Study Of The Cooling Curve Of Several Waxes And Various Binary Mixtures Of These Waxes, Casimir A. Smyk May 1933

A Study Of The Cooling Curve Of Several Waxes And Various Binary Mixtures Of These Waxes, Casimir A. Smyk

Bachelors’ Theses

A cooling curve may be defined as a graphic representation of the relationship which exists in the elapse of time and temperature of a substance surrounded by a medium of a temperature lower than itself. There is no heat added to the substance and the only heat taken away from the substance is by means of the surrounding medium. It is time plotted against temperature. Time on the x-axis and temperature on the y-axis. Many methods have been mentioned for the determination of purity and identification of a wax. But the methods are not standardized because of the length and …

Wax Analysis With Special Reference To Montan, Spermaceti, And Chinese Insect Wax, Margaret M. Plonsker, Margaret E. Seippel Jan 1933

Wax Analysis With Special Reference To Montan, Spermaceti, And Chinese Insect Wax, Margaret M. Plonsker, Margaret E. Seippel

Bachelors’ Theses

The presentation of this thesis under joint authorship finds its justification in the fact that much of the experimental work, though performed individually, is of such a nature as to warrant a unified description. In this way the reader is afforded a better representation and clearer conception of the problem, and a substantial guide for further investigation. Though much work has been done in the field of wax analysis, little is known of the higher fatty acids and alcohols of many of the waxes. Their isolation has been infrequent, and few if any of their derivatives have been formed. It …
