The Value Of Including Chemistry Content In The Study Of High School Biology, Ramon Duane Buckley

The purpose was to evaluate the effect of including some definite chemistry content in high school biology. This evaluation was made by comparing outcomes of instruction in two different groups of a high school biology course. The two groups were equated in terms of the intelligence quotients, the sex, and the previous achievement in biology of the class members. The comparative gains in factual knowledge were measured by means of an evaluation test. The comparative gains in appreciations and interests in biology were measured with a questionnaire.

Present methods for the production of leather from animal hides still depend from the most part on the use of natural tannin extracts. During the year, 1952, the amount of natural tannin extracts used by the leather industry was 560,452,119 pounds as compared to 35,793,000 pounds of synthetic tanning materials. It is not as yet possible to produce synthetic materials as economically as the natural extracts; the result being that there is still a very great demand for natural tannin extracts. The purpose of this paper is to investigate three California oaks as possible sources of tannin. Even though the study of the three varieties of tree may not be representative samples, the procedures developed may prove to be valuable in a more extensive research by other workers.

In 1943 Franke reported that the protein of "allolied" or "toxic" wheat carried the toxicant, and Franke and Painter in 1935 reported that those "toxic" proteins contained selenium which was in organic combination in the protein. There has been much speculation regarding the possibility of selenium replacing sulfur in the amino acids cysteine and methionine. The toxicity of selenium in selenium analogs of these compounds is similar to that of selenium occurring naturally in proteins seleniferous cereals, which indicated that the selenium may be present in the proteins as the analogue of these sulfur amino acids.

Within the Marquette chemical laboratories under the direction and supervision of Dr. John R. Koch, professor and head of the Chemistry Department, many noteworthy advances in enzyme chemistry have been achieved. A new type all glass, single unit viscometer was developed and perfected by Koch and now is the basis of the study of enzyme activity by viscometric methods. The use of this viscometer is not limited solely to work in these laboratories but has also been used with great success in bating and brewing.

Deficient diets have been used extensively as the basis for zoological experiments concerning the metabolism, and dietary requirements of individual animals. The majority of this work has been carried on with the rat as the subject, and resulting external physical variations as the experimental aim. The writer used the mouse as his subject, but, since no literature was available concerning this animal, a few similar experiments performed on the rat will be cited.

This thesis, presented for the degree of Bachelor of Science, provides a systematic chemical study of the alkaloids, a class of complex nitrogenous plant substances possessing basic properties. Barre opens by defining the alkaloids and surveying the various systems used to classify them, whether by natural versus artificial origin, chemical nucleus (pyridine, quinoline, or isoquinoline), volatility, or botanical family of origin, and outlines their general physical and chemical properties, including solubility, optical activity, and characteristic reactions with precipitating and color-test reagents.
