Singlet fission is known to improve solar energy utilization by circumventing the Shockley-Queisser limit. The two essential steps of singlet fission are the formation of a correlated triplet pair and its subsequent quantum decoherence. However, the mechanisms of the triplet pair formation and decoherence still remain elusive. Here we examined both essential steps in single crystalline hexacene and discovered remarkable anisotropy of the overall singlet fission rate along different crystal axes. Since the triplet pair formation emerges on the same timescale along both crystal axes, the quantum decoherence is likely responsible for the directional anisotropy. The distinct quantum decoherence rates …

Mo nitrogenase (N2ase) utilizes a two-component protein system, the catalytic MoFe and its electron-transfer partner FeP, to reduce atmospheric dinitrogen (N2) to ammonia (NH3). The FeMo cofactor contained in the MoFe protein serves as the catalytic center for this reaction and has long inspired model chemistry oriented toward activating N2. This field of chemistry has relied heavily on the detailed characterization of how Mo N2ase accomplishes this feat. Understanding the reaction mechanism of Mo N2ase itself has presented one of the most challenging problems in bioinorganic chemistry because of the ephemeral nature of its …

1,4-Triazolyl combretacoumarins have been prepared by linking the trimethoxyarene unit of combretastatin A4 with coumarins, via a 1,2,3-triazole. For this, 4-azidocoumarins were accessed by a sequential two-step, one-pot reaction of 4-hydroxycoumarins with (benzotriazol-1-yloxy)tris(dimethylamino)phosphonium hexafluorophosphate (BOP), followed by reaction with NaN3. In the reaction with BOP, a coumarin-derived phosphonium ion intermediate seems to form, leading to an O4-(benzotriazolyl)coumarin derivative. For the CuAAC reaction of azidocoumarins with 5-ethynyl-1,2,3-trimethoxybenzene, catalytic [(MeCN)4Cu]PF6 in CH2Cl2/MeOH with 2,6-lutidine, at 50 oC, was suitable. The 4-azidocoumarins were less reactive as compared to PhN3 and …

Complexes were formed pairing FX, FHY, FH2Z, and FH3T (X = Cl, Br, I; Y = S, Se, Te; Z = P, As, Sb; T = Si, Ge, Sn) with NH3 in order to form an A⋯N noncovalent bond, where A refers to the central atom. Geometries, energetics, atomic charges, and spectroscopic characteristics of these complexes were evaluated via DFT calculations. In all cases, the A–F bond, which is located opposite the base and is responsible for the σ-hole on the A atom, elongates and its stretching frequency undergoes a shift to the red. This …

Aim: To identify naturally occurring variants of IAPP capable of inhibiting the aggregation of human IAPP and protecting living cells from the toxic effects of human IAPP. Background: The loss of insulin-producing β-cells and the overall progression of type 2 diabetes appears to be linked to the formation of toxic human IAPP (hIAPP, Islet Amyloid Polypeptide, amylin) amyloid in the pancreas. Inhibiting the initial aggregation of hIAPP has the potential to slow, if not stop entirely, the loss of β-cells and halt the progression of the disease. Objective: To identify and characterize naturally occurring variants of IAPP capable of inhibiting …

Everything in the universe is made up of elements from the periodic table. Each element has its own role that it plays in the formation of things it makes up. For instance, pencil lead is graphite. A series of honeycomb-like structures made up of carbon stacked on top of one another. Carbon’s neighbor to the left, boron doesn’t like to form such stacked honeycomb-like structures. But, what if there was a way to make boron act like carbon so it did like to form such structures? That question is the basis of the electronic transmutation concept presented in this dissertation. …

The title hydrated salt, tris[hexaamminecobalt(III)] tetraoxidorhenate(VII) tetrakis[hexafluoridorhenate(IV)] hexahydrate, arose unexpectedly due to possible contamination of the K2ReF6 starting material with KReO4. It consists of octahedral [Co(NH3)6] 3+ cation (Co1 site symmetry 1), tetrahedral [ReVIIO4] anions (Re site symmetry 1) and octahedral [ReIVF6] 2 anions (Re site symmetries 1and 3). The [ReF6] 2 octahedral anions (mean Re—F = 1.834 A˚ ), [Co(NH3)6] 3+ octahedral cations (mean Co—N = 1.962 A˚ ), and the [ReO4] tetrahedral anion (mean Re—O = 1.719 A˚ ) are slightly distorted. A network of N—HF hydrogen bonds consolidates the structure. The crystal studied was refined as a …

A New Approach To The Potential Energy Of Solids, Radhika Chauhan, Sanjeev K. Verma, Anushri Gupta, Anita Kumari, B. D. Indu
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
A general theory is developed to investigate the expression for potential energy without using (i) empirical results and (ii) process of parameterizing. The simple approach of thermodynamics is adopted to obtain the expressions for the interaction energy of solids in terms of interatomic separation and crystal volume. The new findings have been applied to obtain the expressions for bulk modulus and pressure. The variation of the potential energy function, which provides a means to understand the stability of a crystal has been found in excellent agreements to the earlier results. The use of obtained harmonic and anharmonic force constants may …

Characterization of protein structural properties is crucial to determine its role in normal and pathological conditions. In this dissertation, we have employed NMR spectroscopy in a combination of other biochemical and biophysical techniques to investigate the catalytic function, the molecular mechanism, and nature of the interactions of bmAANAT3, Cdc37, and TIMP2, respectively.
In the first project, we have employed an arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferases (AANATs) from Bombyx mori (bmAANAT3) to determine the role of the acetyl-group in coordinating the catalytic cycle in this family of enzymes. We have found that the occupancy of the acetyl-moiety in the catalytic funnel of these enzymes …

In the eastern Bering Sea, Thysanoessa raschii are the most abundant krill species and a keystone trophic member that serve as both an important grazer and link to upper level consumers. In this system krill experience large annual variation in food resources, especially during ice advance and retreat; multiple lipid classes are used to temper the effects of those fluctuations, as well as to fuel reproduction and growth. Two shipboard feeding experiments that occurred during late spring and early summer of 2010, respectively, monitored the lipid retention in adult T. raschii and examined the fluctuation of specific lipid biomarkers under …

Air pollution is one of the most pressing environmental issues in the Kathmandu Valley, where the capital city of Nepal is located. We estimated emissions from two of the major source types in the valley (vehicles and brick kilns) and analyzed the corresponding impacts on regional air quality. First, we estimated the on-road vehicle emissions in the valley using the International Vehicle Emissions (IVE) model with local emissions factors and the latest available data for vehicle registration. We also identified the locations of the brick kilns in the Kathmandu Valley and developed an emissions inventory for these kilns using emissions …

In Vitro Evaluation Of Ovarian Cancer Tumorigenesis As A Function Of Quinone Oxidoreducatse-1 And Cell Phenotype, Milcah S. Jackson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In vitro multicellular spheroids are attractive model systems for assessing genetic and epigenetic changes that occur in diseased tissues. Understanding how such alterations in gene and subsequent protein expression affect disease progression and metastasis, drug resistance, and recurrence is of great interest in cancer research. In this regard, examining expression and activity of proteins, such as those with cytoprotective ability that are overexpressed in cancer cells, in addition to cell phenotype (i.e., stem-like, epithelial, mesenchymal, or mixed), are two ways to evaluate genetic and epigenetic changes. Moreover, determining the impact that cytoprotective proteins and cell phenotype have on tumor formation …
