Nonexistence Of Stable Harmonic Maps To And From Certain Homogeneous Spaces And Submanifolds Of Euclidean-Space, Ralph Howard, S Walter Wei

Call a compact Riemannian manifold M a strongly unstable manifold if it is not the range or domain of a nonconstant stable harmonic map and also the homotopy class of any map to or from M contains elements of arbitrarily small energy. If M is isometrically immersed in Euclidean space, then a condition on the second fundamental form of M is given which implies M is strongly unstable. As compact isotropy irreducible homogeneous spaces have "standard" immersions into Euclidean space this allows a complete list of the strongly unstable compact irreducible symmetric spaces to be made.

Using A. Weil’s estimates the authors have given bounds for the largest prime P0 such that all primes P > P0 have sequences of quadratic residues of length m. For m ≤ 8 the smallest prime having m consecutive quadratic residues is ≡ 3(mod 4) and P0 ≡ 1 (mod 4). The reason for this phenomenon is investigated in this paper and the theory developed is used to successfully uncover analogous phenomena for rth power residues, r ≥ 2, r even.

The use of inspection gained importance when people started getting conscious of maintaining the quality of manufactured product. According to Anscombe (1958) inspection for quality in the form of acceptance sampling plans originated around 1920. The classical work of Dodge and Romig (1929) put acceptance sampling on a firm footing. In the present work we shall deal with the asymptotic completeness problem in three and four (Quantum Mechanical) particle scattering. This thesis is divided into three chapters. In the first chapter we give an introduction to Scattering Phencmenon and give a description of the N-particle completeness problem.Then we collect some results preliminary to the later chapters and some results that would complete a discussion of the problem.The second chapter consists of some technical results and a reduction of the asymptotic completeness problem in N-particlerscattering via time dependent methods. We established a condition on boundary curves (ending at points) lying either in the unit disc or the upper half plane which implies that any consecutively separated sequence, in the hyperbolic distance, lying on one of these curves is an interpolating sequence for bounded holomorphic functions.

General double linkage of Gorenstein algebras is defined. Rigidity, genericity, and regularity up to codimension six all pass across general double linkage. Rigid strongly unobstructed codimension four Gorenstein algebras which lie in different Herzog classes are produced.

A method has been proposed for factoring an integer N by using the structure of the class groups of quadratic fields of radicand – kN for various small multipliers k. We discuss the method and an implementation of the method, and various theoretical questions which have an impact on the practical use of the method in factoring. Some of the theoretical questions relate to the nature of class numbers and class groups; we present extensive statistical results on the class numbers and class groups of imaginary quadratic fields.

Error bounds for Gaussian quadrature are given in terms of the number of quadrature points and smoothness properties of the function whose integral is being approximated. An intermediate step involves a weighted-L' polynomial approximation problem which is treated in a more general context than that specifically required to bound the Gaussian quadrature error.

In May, 1980 the Ideal Toy Company launched its newest offering, Rubik’s Cube, at a party in Hollywood, hosted by Zsa-Zsa Gabor and Solomon W. Golomb. Of course Gabor, like the cube, is a Hungarian product but who is Golomb? Well, he is a mathematician at the University of Southern California and an expert in number theory, combinatorics, abstract algebra and coding theory. Rubik invented the cube as an aid in teaching his students three-dimensional thinking. The cube has become the darling of algebraists, who use it to teach group theory to their students.

The study of optimality of block designs formally began with wald (1943) proving a very important optimality property, designated as D-optimality of Iatin Square. Desi gns in a given physical set up. Next Ehrenfield (1955) proved the E-optimality property of Latin Square Designs. Historically speaking, there were four steps in the development of today's concept of the derivative, which I list here in chronological order. The derivative was first used; it was then discovered; it was then explored and developed; and it was finally defined. That is, examples of what we now recognize as derivatives first were used on an ad hoc basis in solving particular problems; then the general concept lying behind them these uses was identified (as part of the invention of calculus); then many properties of the derivative were explained and developed in applications both to …

Unless otherwise stated all rings are assumed to be commutative and Noetherian with finite Krull dimension and modules are finitely generated. There are three related questions in commutative algebra. They are about the existence of unimodular elements in projective modules, cancellation of projective modules and minimal number of generators for finitely generated modules. Stochastic integration with respect to Brownian motion was introduced by Ito. Stochastic integration with respect to martingales (and seminartingales) was developed by Kunita-Watanable [24 Fisk [9), Courrege D] and Meyer [33]. In this thesis, we study the path wise stochastic calculus restricting ourselves to continuous semimartingales. Here is a brief summary of our results.In Chapter I, we obtain a pathwise formula for the quadratic variation process < M > of a continuous local martingale M. A complex Banach space X is said to be an L1-predual if X* is isometric to L1() for some non-negative measure Well known examples of L1-preduals include the space C(X) of complex-valued continuous functions on a compact Hausdorff space and the abstract M-spaces of Kakutani. In [19], Grothendieck introduced a class of L'-preduals, now known as G-spaces, and conjectured that those are all the L'-preduals. In his 1964 memoir [35], Lândenstrauss settled this conjecture by exhibiting a wide class of Banach spaces, other than G-spaces, which are L1-preduals.
