The use of Multiple Kernel Learning (MKL) for Support Vector Machines (SVM) in Machine Learning tasks is a growing field of study. MKL kernels expand on traditional base kernels that are used to improve performance on non-linearly separable datasets. Multiple kernels use combinations of those base kernels to develop novel kernel shapes that allow for more diversity in the generated solution spaces. Customising these kernels to the dataset is still mostly a process of trial and error. In this dissertation, we explore methods for enhancing the context-awareness capabilities of modern computers, including mobile devices, tablets, wearables, and traditional computers. Advancements include proposed methods for fusing information from multiple logical sensors, localizing nearby objects using depth sensors, and building models to better understand the content of 2D images.

Several new smartphones are released every year. Many people upgrade to new phones, and their old phones are not put to any further use. In this paper, we explore the feasibility of using such retired smartphones and their on-board sensors to build a home security system. We observe that door-related events such as opening and closing have unique vibration signatures when compared to many types of environmental vibrational noise. Generative models are a class of machine learning models capable of producing digital images with plausibly realistic properties. They are useful in such applications as visualizing designs, rendering game scenes, and improving images at higher magnifications. Unfortunately, existing generative models generate only images with a discrete predetermined resolution. This paper presents the Continuous Space Generative Model (CSGM), a novel generative model capable of generating images as a continuous function, rather than as a discrete set of pixel values. Walknet: A Deep Learning Approach To Improving Sidewalk Quality And Accessibility, Andrew Abbott, Alex Deshowitz, Dennis Murray, Eric C. Larson

This paper proposes a framework for optimizing allocation of infrastructure spending on sidewalk improvement and allowing planners to focus their budgets on the areas in the most need. In this research, we identify curb ramps from Google Street View images using traditional machine learning and deep learning methods. Our convolutional neural network approach achieved an 83% accuracy and high level of precision when classifying curb cuts. We found that as the model received more data, the accuracy increased, which with the continued collection of crowdsourced labeling of curb cuts will increase the model’s classification power. This thesis uses autoencoders to explore the possibility of reducing the length of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS), which is a series of tests and observations used to diagnose autism spectrum disorders in children, adolescents, and adults of different developmental levels. The length of the ADOS, directly and indirectly, causes barriers to its access for many individuals, which means that individuals who need testing are unable to get it. Email is one of the most common forms of digital communication. Spam is unsolicited bulk email, while image spam consists of spam text embedded inside an image. Image spam is used as a means to evade text-based spam filters, and hence image spam poses a threat to email-based communication. In this research, we analyze image spam detection using support vector machines (SVMs), which we train on a wide variety of image features. Image Captioning is a task that requires models to acquire a multi-modal understanding of the world and to express this understanding in natural language text. While the state-of-the-art for this task has rapidly improved in terms of n-gram metrics, these models tend to output the same generic captions for similar images. In this work, we address this limitation and train a model that generates more diverse and specific captions through an unsupervised training approach that incorporates a learning signal from an Image Retrieval model. We summarize previous results and improve the state-of-the-art on caption diversity and novelty.

A method has been developed that locates and determines well-to-well hydraulic fracture interference (frac-hit) in shale plays using hard data. This method uses Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) with designated parameters and target outputs in conjunction with graphs of gas flowrate, tubing pressure, and cumulative gas prediction. The method was created to address the significant increase in frac-hit occurrences due to the infill wells being completed in shale plays.
