Theories and models, which are common in scientific papers in almost all domains, usually provide the foundations of theoretical analysis and experiments. Understanding the use of theories and models can shed light on the credibility and reproducibility of research works. Compared with metadata, such as title, author, keywords, etc., theory extraction in scientific literature is rarely explored, especially for social and behavioral science (SBS) domains. Marine species and ecosystems are widely affected by anthropogenic stressors, ranging from pollution and fishing to climate change. Comprehensive assessments of how species and ecosystems are impacted by anthropogenic stressors are critical for guiding conservation and management investments. Previous global risk or vulnerability assessments have focused on marine habitats, or on limited taxa or specific regions. However, information about the susceptibility of marine species across a range of taxa to different stressors everywhere is required to predict how marine biodiversity will respond to human pressures. Optimizing Model Observer Performance In Learning-Based Ct Reconstruction, Gregory Ongie, Emil Y. Sidky, Ingrid S. Reiser, Xiaochuan Pan

Mathematical and Statistical Science Faculty Research and Publications

Deep neural networks used for reconstructing sparse-view CT data are typically trained by minimizing a pixel- wise mean-squared error or similar loss function over a set of training images. However, networks trained with such losses are prone to wipe out small, low-contrast features that are critical for screening and diagnosis. To remedy this issue, we introduce a novel training loss inspired by the model observer framework to enhance the detectability of weak signals in the reconstructions. We evaluate our approach on the reconstruction of synthetic sparse-view breast CT data, and demonstrate an improvement in signal detectability with the proposed loss.

Global In Time Self-Interacting Dirac Fields In The De Sitter Space, Karen Yagdjian

In this paper the semilinear equation of the spin-12 fields in the de Sitter space is investigated. We prove the existence of the global in time small data solution in the expanding de Sitter universe. Then, under the Lochak–Majorana condition, we prove the existence of the global in time solution with large data. The sufficient conditions for the solutions to blow up in finite time are given for large data in the expanding and contracting de Sitter spacetimes. The influence of the Hubble constant on the lifespan is estimated.

In this paper, we study global existence and blow-up for a periodic modified Camassa–Holm equation in nonhomogeneous Sobolev spaces. Also, we provide a key blow-up criteria to investigate norm inflation and ill-posedness problem for the equation in the critical Sobolev space.
