Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report evidence for the simultaneous production of J/ψ and ϒ mesons in 8.1 fb−1 of data collected at √s = 1.96 TeV by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab p¯p Tevatron Collider. Events with these characteristics are expected to be produced predominantly by gluon-gluon interactions. In this analysis, we extract the effective cross section characterizing the initial parton spatial distribution, σeff = 2.2 ± 0.7(stat) ± 0.9(syst) mb.

Polarimetric Remote Sensing In Oxygen A And B Bands: Sensitivity Study And Information Content Analysis For Vertical Profile Of Aerosols, Shouguo Ding, Jun Wang, Xiaoguang Xu Jan 2016

Polarimetric Remote Sensing In Oxygen A And B Bands: Sensitivity Study And Information Content Analysis For Vertical Profile Of Aerosols, Shouguo Ding, Jun Wang, Xiaoguang Xu

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Theoretical analysis is conducted to reveal the information content of aerosol vertical profile in space-borne measurements of the backscattered radiance and degree of linear polarization (DOLP) in oxygen (O2) A and B bands. Assuming a quasi-Gaussian shape for aerosol vertical profile characterized by peak height H and half width y (at half maximum), the Unified Linearized Vector Radiative Transfer Model (UNL-VRTM) is used to simulate the Stokes fourvector elements of upwelling radiation at the top of atmosphere (TOA) and their Jacobians with respect to H and y. Calculations for different aerosol types and different combinations of H …

Polarimetric Variability Of Classic Supercell Storms As A Function Of Environment, Matthew S. Van Den Broeke Jan 2016

Polarimetric Variability Of Classic Supercell Storms As A Function Of Environment, Matthew S. Van Den Broeke

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Classic supercell storms occur in a generally well understood environment characterized by instability and vertical wind shear. Within this broadly favorable environment, large day-to-day variability in environmental parameters may lead to widely varying radar presentation of storms. Of interest here is whether specific storm structures exhibit repeatable characteristics in similar environments and whether radar presentation can be predicted with knowledge of environmental characteristics. Specifically, this paper focuses on (i) updraft characteristics inferred using differential reflectivity ZDR columns, (ii) characteristics of storm-relative inflow inferred using ZDR arcs, and (iii) areal extent and cyclicality of polarimetrically inferred hailfall at low levels. Variability …

Climatology, Synoptic Conditions, And Misanalyses Of Mississippi River Valley Drylines, Rebecca S. Duell, Matthew S. Van Den Broeke

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The dryline is an important focal point for convection initiation. Although drylines most commonly occur on the southern Great Plains, dryline passages and subsequent severe weather outbreaks have been documented in the Mississippi River valley. This study presents a 15-yr (1999–2013) climatology of these Mississippi River valley drylines and associated severe weather. Additionally, synoptic patterns are identified that may result in drylines moving atypically far eastward into the Mississippi River valley. In total, 39 Mississippi River valley drylines (hereafter referred to as MRV drylines) were identified from the North American Regional Reanalysis (NARR) dataset through the study period. Mean and …

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

This work describes some of the most extensive ground-based observations of the aerosol profile collected in Southeast Asia to date, highlighting the challenges in simulating these observations with amesoscale perspective. An 84-hWRFModel coupled with chemistry (WRF-Chem)mesoscale simulation of smoke particle transport at Kuching, Malaysia, in the southern Maritime Continent of Southeast Asia is evaluated relative to a unique collection of continuous ground-based lidar, sun photometer, and 4-h radiosonde profiling. The period was marked by relatively dry conditions, allowing smoke layers transported to the site unperturbed by wet deposition to be common regionally. The model depiction is reasonable overall. Core thermodynamics, …

Did The Widespread Haze Pollution Over China Increase During The Last Decade? A Satellite View From Space, Minghui Tao, Liangfu Chen, Zifeng Wang, Jun Wang, Jinhua Tao, Xinhui Wang

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Widespread haze layers usually cover China like low clouds, exerting marked influence on air quality and regional climate. With recent Collection 6 MODISDeep Blue aerosol data in 2000–2015, we analyzed the trends of regional haze pollution and the corresponding influence of atmospheric circulation in China. Satellite observations show that regional haze pollution is mainly concentrated in northern and central China. The annual frequency of regional haze in northern China nearly doubles between 2000 and 2006, increasing from30–50 to 80–90 days. Though there is amarked decrease in annual frequency during 2007–2009 due to both reduction of anthropogenic emissions and changes of …

The Northern Sub-Saharan African (NSSA) region, which accounts for 20%–25%of the global carbon emissions from biomass burning, also suffers from frequent drought episodes and other disruptions to the hydrological cycle whose adverse societal impacts have been widely reported during the last several decades. This paper presents a conceptual framework of the NSSA regional climate system components that may be linked to biomass burning, as well as detailed analyses of a variety of satellite data for 2001–2014 in conjunction with relevant model-assimilated variables. Satellite fire detections in NSSA show that the vast majority (>75%) occurs in the savanna and woody …

Characterizing Mathematics Graduate Student Teaching Assistants’ Opportunities To Learn From Teaching, Yvonne Lai, Wendy Smith, Nathan Wakefield, Erica R. Miller, Julia St. Goar, Corbin M. Groothuis, Kelsey M. Wells

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Exemplary models to inform novice instruction and the development of graduate teaching assistants (TAs) exist. What is missing from the literature is the process of how graduate students in model professional development programs make sense of and enact the experiences offered. A first step to understanding TAs’ learning to teach is to characterize how and whether they link observations of student work to hypotheses about student thinking and then connect those hypotheses to future teaching actions. A reason to be interested in these connections is that their strength and coherence determine how well TAs can learn from experiences. We found …

R0 Analysis Of A Benthic-Drift Model For A Stream Population, Qihua Huang, Yu Jin, Mark A. Lewis Jan 2016

R0 Analysis Of A Benthic-Drift Model For A Stream Population, Qihua Huang, Yu Jin, Mark A. Lewis

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

One key issue for theory in stream ecology is how much stream flow can be changed while still maintaining an intact stream ecology, instream flow needs (IFNs); the study of determining IFNs is challenging due to the complex and dynamic nature of the interaction between the stream environ- ment and the biological community. We develop a process-oriented benthic-drift model that links changes in the flow regime and habitat availability with population dynamics. In the model, the stream is divided into two zones, drift zone and benthic zone, and the population is divided into two interacting compartments, individuals residing in the …

Medium-Sized Au40(Sr)24 And Au52(Sr)32 Nanoclusters With Distinct Gold-Kernel Structures And Spectroscopic Features, Wen Wu Xu, Yadong Li, Yi Gao, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

We have analyzed the structures of two medium-sized thiolateprotected gold nanoparticles (RS-AuNPs) Au40(SR)24 and Au52(SR)32 and identified the distinct structural features in their Au kernels [Sci. Adv., 2015, 1, e1500425]. We find that both Au kernels of the Au40(SR)24 and Au52(SR)32 nanoclusters can be classified as interpenetrating cuboctahedra. Simulated X-ray diffraction patterns of the RS-AuNPs with the cuboctahedral kernel are collected and then compared with the X-ray diffraction patterns of the RS-AuNPs of two other prevailing Au-kernels identified from previous experiments, namely the Ino-decahedral kernel and icosahedral kernel. …

Surprising Impact Of Remote Groups On The Folding–Unfolding And Dimer-Chain Equilibria Of Bifunctional H-Bonding Unimers, Rui Liu, Shuang Cheng, Erin S. Baker, Richard D. Smith, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Bing Gong

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Oligoamide 1, consisting of two H-bonding units linked by a trimethylene linker, was previously found to form a very stable, folded dimer. In this work, replacing the side chains and end groups of 1 led to derivatives that show the surprising impact of end groups on the folding and dimer-chain equilibria of the resultant molecules.

Unraveling The Hidden Function Of A Stabilizer In A Precursor In Improving Hybrid Perovskite Film Morphology For High Efficiency Solar Cells, Zhengguo Xiao, Dong Wang, Qingfeng Dong, Qi Wang, Wei Wei, Jun Dai, Xiwei Zheng, Jinsong Huang Jan 2016

Unraveling The Hidden Function Of A Stabilizer In A Precursor In Improving Hybrid Perovskite Film Morphology For High Efficiency Solar Cells, Zhengguo Xiao, Dong Wang, Qingfeng Dong, Qi Wang, Wei Wei, Jun Dai, Xiwei Zheng, Jinsong Huang

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

The morphology of the organometal trihalide perovskite (OTP) plays a critical role in the performance of solar cell devices. Nevertheless it has been frequently reported that the morphology of OTP films tends to be different in different laboratories even with the same film preparation procedure, which makes it very difficult to compare and understand the material and device physics. Here, we unravel a critical role of the H3PO2 stabilizer in HI, which has been largely ignored, in controlling the morphology of the perovskite films. The H3PO2 stabilizer in HI solution introduces MAH2PO …

Hydrogen Bonding And Orientation Effects On The Accommodation Of Methylamine At The Air-Water Interface, Ross D. Hoehn, Marcelo A. Carignano, Sabre Kais, Chongjing Zhu, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Joseph S. Francisco, Ivan Gladich Jan 2016

Hydrogen Bonding And Orientation Effects On The Accommodation Of Methylamine At The Air-Water Interface, Ross D. Hoehn, Marcelo A. Carignano, Sabre Kais, Chongjing Zhu, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Joseph S. Francisco, Ivan Gladich

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Methylamine is an abundant amine compound detected in the atmosphere which can affect the nature of atmospheric aerosol surfaces, changing their chemical and optical properties. Molecular dynamics simulation results show that methylamine accommodation on water is close to unity with the hydrophilic head group solvated in the interfacial environment and the methyl group pointing into the air phase. A detailed analysis of the hydrogen bond network indicates stronger hydrogen bonds between water and the primary amine group at the interface, suggesting that atmospheric trace gases will likely react with the methyl group instead of the solvated amine site. These findings …

Tuning The Electronic Properties Of Monolayer And Bilayer Ptse2 Via Strain Engineering, Pengfei Li, Lei Li, Xiao Cheng Zeng Jan 2016

Tuning The Electronic Properties Of Monolayer And Bilayer Ptse2 Via Strain Engineering, Pengfei Li, Lei Li, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

The recently synthesized monolayer PtSe2 belongs to the class of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) materials (Nano Lett., 2015, 15, 4013). Based on first-principles calculations, we show that the band gaps of monolayer and bilayer PtSe2 can be tuned over a wide range via strain engineering. Both isotropic and uniaxial strains are investigated. For bilayer PtSe2, the vertical out-of-plane strain is also considered. In most cases, the strain can reduce the band gap except for the bilayer PtSe2 under the isotropic strain (Ɛ≤ 4%) for which the band gap can be slightly enlarged. Importantly, the …

Near-Barrierless Ammonium Bisulfate Formation Via A Loop-Structure Promoted Proton-Transfer Mechanism On The Surface Of Water, Lei Li, Manoj Kumar, Chongqin Zhu, Jie Zhong, Joseph S. Francisco, Xiao Cheng Zeng Jan 2016

Near-Barrierless Ammonium Bisulfate Formation Via A Loop-Structure Promoted Proton-Transfer Mechanism On The Surface Of Water, Lei Li, Manoj Kumar, Chongqin Zhu, Jie Zhong, Joseph S. Francisco, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

In the atmosphere, a well-known and conventional pathway toward the formation of ammonium sulfate is through the neutralization of sulfuric acid with ammonia (NH3) in water droplets. Here, we present direct ab initio molecular dynamics simulation evidence of the formation of ammonium bisulfate (NH4HSO4) from the hydrated NH3 and SO3 molecules in a water trimer as well as on the surface of a water droplet. This reaction suggests a new mechanism for the formation of ammonium sulfate in the atmosphere, especially when the concentration of NH3 is high (e.g., ∼10 μg …

Resolving The Hono Formation Mechanism In The Ionosphere Via Ab Initio Molecular Dynamic Simulations, Rongxing He, Lei Li, Jie Zhong, Chongqin Zhu, Joseph S. Francisco, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Solar emission produces copious nitrosonium ions (NO+) in the D layer of the ionosphere, 60 to 90 km above the Earth’s surface. NO+ is believed to transfer its charge to water clusters in that region, leading to the formation of gaseous nitrous acid (HONO) and protonated water cluster. The dynamics of this reaction at the ionospheric temperature (200–220 K) and the associated mechanistic details are largely unknown. Using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and transition-state search, key structures of the water hydrates—tetrahydrate NO+(H2O)4 and pentahydrate NO+(H2O)5 …

Probing The Structures Of Gold–Aluminum Alloy Clusters AuXAlY−: A Joint Experimental And Theoretical Study, Navneet S. Khetrapal, Tian Jian, Rhitankar Pal, Gary V. Lopez, Seema Pande, Lai-Sheng Wang, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Besides the size and structure, compositions can also dramatically affect the properties of alloy nanoclusters. Due to the added degrees of freedom, determination of the global minimum structures for multi-component nanoclusters poses even greater challenges, both experimentally and theoretically. Here we report a systematic and joint experimental/theoretical study of a series of gold–aluminum alloy clusters, AuxAly−(x + y = 7,8), with various compositions (x = 1–3; y = 4–7). Well-resolved photoelectron spectra have been obtained for these clusters at different photon energies. Basin-hopping global searches, coupled with density functional theory calculations, are used …

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

The angular distributions and the differential branching fraction of the decay B0→K*(892)0μ+μ- are studied using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.5 fb-1 collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in pp collisions at s=8 TeV. From 1430 signal decays, the forward-backward asymmetry of the muons, the K*(892)0 longitudinal polarization fraction, and the differential branching fraction are determined as a function of the dimuon invariant mass squared. The measurements are among the most precise to date and are in good agreement with standard model predictions.

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

The first search for a heavy charged vector boson in the final state with a tau lepton and a neutrino is reported, using 19.7 fb-1 of LHC data at s=8 TeV. A signal would appear as an excess of events with high transverse mass, where the standard model background is low. No excess is observed. Limits are set on a model in which the W' decays preferentially to fermions of the third generation. These results substantially extend previous constraints on this model. Masses below 2.0 to 2.7 TeV are excluded, depending on the model parameters. In addition, the existence of …
