Improving Student Attitudes About Learning Science And Student Scientific Reasoning Skills, Douglas K. Duncan, Leilani Arthurs Jan 2012

Improving Student Attitudes About Learning Science And Student Scientific Reasoning Skills, Douglas K. Duncan, Leilani Arthurs

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Student attitudes about learning science and student ideas about the nature of science were compared at the end of two astronomy courses taught in Fall 2007, a course with a traditional astronomy curriculum and a transformed course, whose traditional astronomy curriculum was supplemented by an embedded curriculum that explicitly addressed the nature of science and student metacognition (i.e., thinking about one’s own thinking.) The embedded curriculum in the transformed course gave students practice at evaluating examples of valid science and pseudoscience found on the internet; it also provided students opportunities to discuss what they think about learning science. Student attitudes …

A 9400-yr-old record from Crevice Lake, a semi-closed alkaline lake in northern Yellowstone National Park, was analyzed for pollen, charcoal, geochemistry, mineralogy, diatoms, and stable isotopes to develop a nuanced understanding of Holocene environmental history in a region of northern Rocky Mountains that receives both summer and winter precipitation. The limited surface area, conical bathymetry, and deep water (>31 m) of Crevice Lake create oxygen-deficient conditions in the hypolimnion and preserve annually laminated sediment (varves) for much of the record. Pollen data indicate that the watershed supported a closed Pinus-dominated forest and low fire frequency prior to 8200 …

Agile Detection Of Cygnus X-3 Γ-Ray Active States During The Period Mid-2009/Mid-2010, A Bulgarelli, Diana C. Hannikainen

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

Context. Cygnus X-3 (Cyg X-3) is a well-known microquasar producing variable emission at all wavelengths. Cyg X-3 is a prominent X-ray binary producing relativistic jets, and studying its high energy emission is crucial for the understanding of the fundamental acceleration processes in accreting compact objects. Aims. Our goal is to study extreme particle acceleration and γ-ray production above 100 MeV during special spectral states of Cyg X-3 usually characterized by a low hard X-ray flux and enhanced soft X-ray states. Methods. We observed Cyg X-3 with the AGILE satellite in extended time intervals from 2009 Jun.–Jul., and 2009 Nov.–2010 Jul. …

The Evolution Of Ultracompact X-Ray Binaries, Lennart M. Van Haaften, Gijs A. Nelemans, Rasmus Voss, Matt A. Wood, Jan Kuijpers

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

Context. Ultracompact X-ray binaries (UCXBs) typically consist of a white dwarf donor and a neutron star or black hole accretor. The evolution of UCXBs and very low mass ratio binaries in general is poorly understood. In particular, the dynamical behavior of an accretion disk extending to a large radius (relative to the orbit) is unclear. Aims. We investigate the evolution of UCXBs in order to learn for which mass ratios and accretor types these systems can exist, and if they do, what are their orbital and neutron star spin periods, mass transfer rates and evolutionary timescales. Methods. We compute tracks …

International Observational Campaigns Of The Last Two Eclipses In Ee Cephei: 2003 And 2008/9, Cezary Galan, Peter Németh Jan 2012

International Observational Campaigns Of The Last Two Eclipses In Ee Cephei: 2003 And 2008/9, Cezary Galan, Peter Németh

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

Context. EE Cep is an unusual long-period (5.6 yr) eclipsing binary discovered during the mid-twentieth century. It undergoes almost-grey eclipses that vary in terms of both depth and duration at different epochs. The system consists of a Be type star and a dark dusty disk around an invisible companion. EE Cep together with the widely studied ε Aur are the only two known cases of long-period eclipsing binaries with a dark, dusty disk component responsible for periodic obscurations. Aims. Two observational campaigns were carried out during the eclipses of EE Cep in 2003 and 2008/9 to verify whether the eclipsing …

The Agile Monitoring Of Cygnus X-3: Transient Gamma-Ray Emission And Spectral Constraints, Giovanni Piano, Diana Carina Hannikainen

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

We present the AGILE-GRID (Astro-rivelatore Gamma a Immagini LEggero – Gamma-Ray Imaging Detector) monitoring of Cygnus X-3, during the period between November 2007 and July 2009. We report here the whole AGILE-GRID monitoring of Cygnus X-3 in the AGILE “pointing” mode data-taking, to confirm that the γ-ray activity coincides with the same repetitive pattern of multiwavelength emission and analyze in depth the overall γ-ray spectrum by assuming both leptonic and hadronic scenarios. Seven intense γ-ray events were detected in this period, with a typical event lasting one or two days. These durations are longer than the likely cooling times of …

A Deep Search For The Host Galaxies Of Gamma-Ray Bursts With No Detected Optical Afterglow, Andrea Rossi, E E. Gonsalves Jan 2012

A Deep Search For The Host Galaxies Of Gamma-Ray Bursts With No Detected Optical Afterglow, Andrea Rossi, E E. Gonsalves

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

Context. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) can provide information about star formation at high redshifts. Even in the absence of a bright optical/near-infrared/radio afterglow, the high detection rate of X-ray afterglows by Swift/XRT and its localization precision of 2–3 arcsec facilitates the identification and the study of GRB host galaxies. Aims. We focus on the search for the host galaxies of 17 bursts with arcsec-sized XRT error circles but no detected long-wavelength afterglow, in spite of their deep and rapid follow-up observations. Three of these events can also be classified as truly dark bursts, i.e., the observed upper limit on the optical …

Deviation From Quark Number Scaling Of The Anisotropy Parameter V₂ Of Pions, Kaons, And Protons In Au+Au Collisions At √S Nn=200 Gev, Andrew Marshall Adare, Gyöngyi Baksay, László A. Baksay, Marcus Hohlmann, Phenix Collaboration Jan 2012

Deviation From Quark Number Scaling Of The Anisotropy Parameter V₂ Of Pions, Kaons, And Protons In Au+Au Collisions At √S Nn=200 Gev, Andrew Marshall Adare, Gyöngyi Baksay, László A. Baksay, Marcus Hohlmann, Phenix Collaboration

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

Measurements of the anisotropy parameter v₂ of identified hadrons (pions, kaons, and protons) as a function of centrality, transverse momentum pT, and transverse kinetic energy KET at midrapidity (|η|<0.35) in Au+Au collisions at √sNN=200 GeV are presented. Pions and protons are identified up to pT= 6 GeV/c, and kaons up to pT= 4 GeV/c, by combining information from time-of-flight and aerogel Čerenkov detectors in the PHENIX Experiment. The scaling of v₂ with the number of valence quarks (nq) has been studied in different centrality bins as a function of transverse momentum and transverse kinetic energy. A deviation from previously observed quark-number scaling is observed at large values of KET/nq in noncentral Au+Au collisions (20-60%), but this scaling remains valid in central collisions (0-10%).

Measurement Of The Inclusive Production Cross Sections For Forward Jets And For Dijet Events With One Forward And One Central Jet In Pp Collisions At √S = 7 Tev, S. Chatrchyan, Marc M. Baarmand, B. Dorney, Marcus Hohlmann, Himali Kalakhety, Igor Vodopiyanov, The Cms Collaboration Jan 2012

Measurement Of The Inclusive Production Cross Sections For Forward Jets And For Dijet Events With One Forward And One Central Jet In Pp Collisions At √S = 7 Tev, S. Chatrchyan, Marc M. Baarmand, B. Dorney, Marcus Hohlmann, Himali Kalakhety, Igor Vodopiyanov, The Cms Collaboration

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

The inclusive production cross sections for forward jets, as well for jets in dijet events with at least one jet emitted at central and the other at forward pseudorapidities, are measured in the range of transverse momenta pT = 35-150 GeV/c in proton-proton collisions at √s =7 TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Forward jets are measured within pseudorapidities 3.2 < |η| < 4.7, and central jets within the |η| < 2.8 range. The differential cross sections d2σ/dpT dη are compared to predictions from three approaches in perturbative quantum chromodynamics: (i) next-to-leading-order calculations obtained with and without matching to parton-shower Monte Carlo simulations, (ii) pythia and herwig parton-shower event generators with different tunes of parameters, and (iii) cascade and hej models, including different non-collinear corrections to standard single-parton radiation. The single-jet inclusive forward jet spectrum is well described by all models, but not all predictions are consistent with the spectra observed for the forward-central dijet events.

Search For Quark Compositeness In Dijet Angular Distributions From Pp Collisions At √S = 7 Tev, S. Chatrchyan, Marc M. Baarmand, B. Dorney, Marcus Hohlmann, Himali Kalakhety, Igor Vodopiyanov, The Cms Collaboration Jan 2012

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

A search for quark compositeness using dijet angular distributions from pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV is presented. The search has been carried out using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.2 fb−1, recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Normalized dijet angular distributions have been measured for dijet invariant masses from 0.4 TeV to above 3 TeV and compared with a variety of contact interaction models, including those which take into account the effects of next-to-leading-order QCD corrections. The data are found to be in agreement with the predictions of perturbative QCD, and lower …

Catastrophe And The Life Span Of Coral Reefs, Richard B. Aronson, William F. Precht, Ian G. Macintyre, Lauren T. Toth Jan 2012

Catastrophe And The Life Span Of Coral Reefs, Richard B. Aronson, William F. Precht, Ian G. Macintyre, Lauren T. Toth

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

A strong earthquake in the western Caribbean in 2009 had a catastrophic impact on uncemented, unconsolidated coral reefs in the central sector of the shelf lagoon of the Belizean barrier reef. In a set of 21 reef sites that had been observed prior to the earthquake, the benthic assemblages of 10 were eradicated, and one was partially damaged, by avalanching of their slopes. Ecological dynamics that had played out over the previous 23 years, including the mass mortalities of two sequentially dominant coral species and a large increase in the cover of an encrusting sponge, were instantaneously rendered moot in …

Power Estimates Associated With Internal Tides From The Monterey Bay Area, Steven M. Jachec Jan 2012

Power Estimates Associated With Internal Tides From The Monterey Bay Area, Steven M. Jachec

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Numerical modeling has proven to be a useful method for simulating internal tides within the coastal ocean. Monterey Bay is a location that experiences energetic semidiurnal internal tides, and they are pronounced within Monterey Submarine Canyon. Numerical simulations and field measurements indicate that the baroclinic energy fluxes there are spatially variable, leading to locations of positive and negative baroclinic energy flux divergences. Results derived from a SUNTANS (Stanford Unstructured Nonhydrostatic Terrain-following Adaptive Navier-Stokes Simulator) model simulation show that Monterey Submarine Canyon’s baroclinic power is net dissipative (–8.3 MW). However, sources and sinks exist throughout the canyon, and they permeate the …

Ferroelectric Control Of Magnetocrystalline Anisotropy At Cobalt/Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride) Interfaces, Pavel Lukashev, Tula R. Paudel, Juan M. López-Encarnación, Shireen Adenwalla, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Julian P. Velev Jan 2012

Ferroelectric Control Of Magnetocrystalline Anisotropy At Cobalt/Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride) Interfaces, Pavel Lukashev, Tula R. Paudel, Juan M. López-Encarnación, Shireen Adenwalla, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Julian P. Velev

Shireen Adenwalla Papers

Electric field control of magnetization is one of the promising avenues for achieving high-density energy-efficient magnetic data storage. Ferroelectric materials can be especially useful for that purpose as a source of very large switchable electric fields when interfaced with a ferromagnet. Organic ferroelectrics, such as poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), have an additional advantage of being weakly bonded to the ferromagnet, thus minimizing undesirable effects such as interface chemical modification and/or strain coupling. In this work we use first-principles density functional calculations of Co/PVDF heterostructures to demonstrate the effect of ferroelectric polarization of PVDF on the interface magnetocrystalline anisotropy that controls the …

A Locking-Free Hp Dpg Method For Linear Elasticity With Symmetric Stresses, Jamie Bramwell, Leszek Demkowicz, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Weifeng Qiu Jan 2012

A Locking-Free Hp Dpg Method For Linear Elasticity With Symmetric Stresses, Jamie Bramwell, Leszek Demkowicz, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Weifeng Qiu

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present two new methods for linear elasticity that simultaneously yield stress and displacement approximations of optimal accuracy in both the mesh size h and polynomial degree p. This is achieved within the recently developed discontinuous Petrov- Galerkin (DPG) framework. In this framework, both the stress and the displacement ap- proximations are discontinuous across element interfaces. We study locking-free convergence properties and the interrelationships between the two DPG methods.

Partial Expansion Of A Lipschitz Domain And Some Applications, Weifeng Qiu, Jay Gopalakrishnan Jan 2012

Partial Expansion Of A Lipschitz Domain And Some Applications, Weifeng Qiu, Jay Gopalakrishnan

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We show that a Lipschitz domain can be expanded solely near a part of its boundary, assuming that the part is enclosed by a piecewise C1 curve. The expanded domain as well as the extended part are both Lipschitz. We apply this result to prove a regular decomposition of standard vector Sobolev spaces with vanishing traces only on part of the boundary. Another application in the construction of low-regularity projectors into finite element spaces with partial boundary conditions is also indicated

Real-Time Anomaly Detection In Full Motion Video, Glenn Konowicz,, Jiang Li, Donnie Self (Ed.) Jan 2012

Real-Time Anomaly Detection In Full Motion Video, Glenn Konowicz,, Jiang Li, Donnie Self (Ed.)

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Improvement in sensor technology such as charge-coupled devices (CCD) as well as constant incremental improvements in storage space has enabled the recording and storage of video more prevalent and lower cost than ever before. However, the improvements in the ability to capture and store a wide array of video have required additional manpower to translate these raw data sources into useful information. We propose an algorithm for automatically detecting anomalous movement patterns within full motion video thus reducing the amount of human intervention required to make use of these new data sources. The proposed algorithm tracks all of the objects …

Sparse Coding For Hyperspectral Images Using Random Dictionary And Soft Thresholding, Ender Oguslu, Khan Iftekharuddin, Jiang Li, Mark Allen Neifeld (Ed.), Amit Ashok (Ed.)

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Many techniques have been recently developed for classification of hyperspectral images (HSI) including support vector machines (SVMs), neural networks and graph-based methods. To achieve good performances for the classification, a good feature representation of the HSI is essential. A great deal of feature extraction algorithms have been developed such as principal component analysis (PCA) and independent component analysis (ICA). Sparse coding has recently shown state-of-the-art performances in many applications including image classification. In this paper, we present a feature extraction method for HSI data motivated by a recently developed sparse coding based image representation technique. Sparse coding consists of a …

Mathematical Model Development Of Super-Resolution Image Wiener Restoration, Amr H. Yousef, Jiang Li, Mohammad A. Karim Jan 2012

Mathematical Model Development Of Super-Resolution Image Wiener Restoration, Amr H. Yousef, Jiang Li, Mohammad A. Karim

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In super-resolution (SR), a set of degraded low-resolution (LR) images are used to reconstruct a higher-resolution image that suffers from acquisition degradations. One way to boost SR images visual quality is to use restoration filters to remove reconstructed images artifacts. We propose an efficient method to optimally allocate the LR pixels on the high-resolution grid and introduce a mathematical derivation of a stochastic Wiener filter. It relies on the continuous-discrete-continuous model and is constrained by the periodic and nonperiodic interrelationships between the different frequency components of the proposed SR system. We analyze an end-to-end model and formulate the Wiener filter …

Fast Stochastic Wiener Filter For Super-Resolution Image Restoration With Information Theoretic Visual Quality Assessment, Amr Hussein Yousef, Jiang Li, Mohammad Karim, Mark Allen Neifeld (Ed.), Amit Ashok (Ed.) Jan 2012

Fast Stochastic Wiener Filter For Super-Resolution Image Restoration With Information Theoretic Visual Quality Assessment, Amr Hussein Yousef, Jiang Li, Mohammad Karim, Mark Allen Neifeld (Ed.), Amit Ashok (Ed.)

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Super-resolution (SR) refers to reconstructing a single high resolution (HR) image from a set of subsampled, blurred and noisy low resolution (LR) images. The reconstructed image suffers from degradations such as blur, aliasing, photo-detector noise and registration and fusion error. Wiener filter can be used to remove artifacts and enhance the visual quality of the reconstructed images. In this paper, we introduce a new fast stochastic Wiener filter for SR reconstruction and restoration that can be implemented efficiently in the frequency domain. Our derivation depends on the continuous-discrete-continuous (CDC) model that represents most of the degradations encountered during the image-gathering …

Toward Automatic Subpixel Registration Of Unmanned Airborne Vehicle Images, Amr Hussein Yousef, Jiang Li, Mohammad Karim, Mark Allen Neifeld (Ed.), Amit Ashok (Ed.)

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Many applications require to register images within subpixel accuracy like computer vision especially super-resolution (SR) where the estimated subpixel shifts are very crucial in the reconstruction and restoration of SR images. In our work we have an optical sensor that is mounted on an unmanned airborne vehicle (UAV) and captures a set of images that contain sufficient overlapped area required to reconstruct a SR image. Due to the wind, The UAV may encounter rotational effects such as yaw, pitch and roll which can distort the acquired as well as processed images with shear, tilt or perspective distortions. In this paper …

The microcontrollers are interfaced with wireless communication modules for transmitting flight telemetry and structural/environmental data to a ground control station that sends the UAV command and control signals required for the mission objectives. The UAV …

Cover Crop Mixtures For The Western Corn Belt: Opportunities For Increased Productivity And Stability, Samuel E. Wortman, Charles A. Francis, John L. Lindquist Jan 2012

Cover Crop Mixtures For The Western Corn Belt: Opportunities For Increased Productivity And Stability, Samuel E. Wortman, Charles A. Francis, John L. Lindquist

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Achieving agronomic and environmental benefits associated with cover crops oft en depends on reliable establishment of a highly productive cover crop community. The objective of this study was to determine if cover crop mixtures can increase productivity and stability compared to single species cover crops, and to identify those components most active in contributing to or detracting from mixture productivity. A rainfed field experiment was conducted near Mead, Nebraska, United States, in 2010 and 2011. Eight individual cover crop species (in either the Brassicaceae [mustard] or Fabaceae [legume] family) and four mixtures of these species (two, four, six, and eight …

In Situ And Ex Situ Studies Of Molybdenum Thin Films Deposited By Rf And Dc Magnetron Sputtering As A Back Contact For Cigs Solar Cells, K. P. Aryal, H. Khatri, R. W. Collins, S. Marsillac

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Molybdenum thin films were deposited by rf and dc magnetron sputtering and their properties analyzed with regards to their potential application as a back contact for CIGS solar cells. It is shown that both types of films tend to transition from tensile to compressive strain when the deposition pressure increases, while the conductivity and the grain size decreas. The nucleation of the films characterized by in situ and real time spectroscopic ellipsometry shows that both films follow a Volmer-Weber growth, with a higher surface roughness and lower deposition rate for the rf deposited films. The electronic relaxation time was then …

Optical Detection Of Melting Point Depression For Silver Nanoparticles Via In Situ Real Time Spectroscopic Ellipsometry, S. A. Little, T. Begou, R. W. Collins, S. Marsillac

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Silver nanoparticle films were deposited by sputtering at room temperature and were annealed while monitoring by real time spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE). The nanoparticle dielectric functions (0.75 eV-6.5 eV) obtained by SE were modeled using Lorentz and generalized oscillators for the nanoparticle plasmon polariton (NPP) and interband transitions, respectively. The nanoparticle melting point could be identified from variations in the oscillator parameters during annealing, and this identification was further confirmed after cooling through significant, irreversible changes in these parameters relative to the as-deposited film. The variation in melting point with physical thickness, and thus average nanoparticle diameter, as measured by SE …

State And Output Feedback-Based Adaptive Optimal Control Of Nonlinear Continuous-Time Systems In Strict Feedback Form, H. Zargarzadeh, T. Dierks, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper focuses on neural network (NN) based adaptive optimal control of nonlinear continuous-time systems in strict feedback form with known dynamics. a single NN is utilized to learn the infinite horizon cost function which is the solution to the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation in continuous-time. the corresponding optimal control input that minimizes the HJB equation is calculated in a forward-in-time manner without using value and policy iterations. First, the optimal control problem is solved in a generic multi-input and multi output (MIMO) nonlinear system in strict feedback form with a state feedback approach. Then, the approach is extended to single …

Design And Analysis Of Cloaked Fluorophores For Rapid Detection And Visualization Of Cancer Cells Containing Nad(P)H:Quinone Oxidoreductase-1, William Silvers

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The development of fluorogenic substrates for real-time tumor cell detection has led to a vastly expanding field for personal oncology. Fluorophores have been studied as appendages to larger scaffolds leading to accumulation of these dyes in tumor cells or their surrounding environment, taking advantage of tumor anatomy. A new class of fluorophores has been developed in which the dye is an active participant in the mechanism of cancer cell detection. These dyes have been conjugated such that their fluorescence has been eliminated or altered and will undergo a change to reveal their fluorescent signal upon activation by a mechanism that …
