A Neural-Based Electromagnetic Inverse Scattering Approach To The Detection Of A Conducting Cylinder Coated With A Dielectric Material, Senem Makal, Ahmet Kizilay

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, a radial basis function neural network approach is applied for the estimation of the localization and the radius of a conducting cylinder with a circular cross-section coated with a dielectric material. A set of features, the radar cross-section (RCS) values, are derived from scattered fields, which are calculated using the surface equivalence principle and the method of moment. RCS values are obtained using 10 different scattering angles that are fed into the network. The outputs of the network are the location (x_0, y_0) and the radius (r_p) of the conducting cylinder. This is an application of the …

New Change Impact Factor Estimation In Software Development, Murat Kahraman Güngör, Ersi̇n Elbaşi, James Walter Fawcett

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Change in software is always an essential part of software development and maintenance. Estimating a proposed change's effect on the later phases of the development helps project managers and developers with decision-making and predicting future progress. During development, on some occasions, speedy solutions are necessary to meet project schedules. Such quick changes may lead to major quality flaws in the long term, even though they solve local problems in the short term. Controlled management of change is achieved by being able to estimate the impact of changes. In this paper, we propose a new change impact factor estimation and present …

Optimization Of Pilot Tones Using Differential Evolution Algorithm In Mimo-Ofdm Systems, Muhammet Nuri̇ Seyman, Necmi̇ Taşpinar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, we propose a differential evolution (DE) algorithm for optimizing the placement and power of the pilot tones that are utilized by a least square (LS) algorithm for channel estimation in multiple-input and multiple-output orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems. Computer simulations demonstrated that the performance of the LS algorithm was increased by optimizing the pilot tones with the DE algorithm instead of locating them orthogonally. We used the upper bound of the mean square error (MSE) as a fitness function of the DE algorithm for optimization tasks. With the use of an upper bound, it is not necessary …

An Improved Fastslam Framework Using Soft Computing, Ramazan Havangi, Mohammad Ali Nekoui, Mohammad Teshnehlab Jan 2012

An Improved Fastslam Framework Using Soft Computing, Ramazan Havangi, Mohammad Ali Nekoui, Mohammad Teshnehlab

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

FastSLAM is a framework for simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) using a Rao-Blackwellized particle filter. However, FastSLAM degenerates over time. This degeneracy is due to the fact that a particle set estimating the pose of the robot loses its diversity. One of the main reasons for losing particle diversity in FastSLAM is sample impoverishment. In this case, most of the particle weights are insignificant. Another problem of FastSLAM relates to the design of an extended Kalman filter (EKF) for the landmark position's estimation. The performance of the EKF and the quality of the estimation depend heavily on correct a priori …

Action-Reaction Based Parameters Identification And States Estimation Of Flexible Systems, Islam Shoukry, Emrah Deni̇z Kunt, Asif Sabanovic Jan 2012

Action-Reaction Based Parameters Identification And States Estimation Of Flexible Systems, Islam Shoukry, Emrah Deni̇z Kunt, Asif Sabanovic

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This work attempts to identify and estimate flexible system's parameters and states by a simple utilization of the Action-Reaction law of dynamical systems. Attached actuator to a dynamical system or environmental interaction imposes an action that is instantaneously followed by a dynamical system reaction. The dynamical system's reaction carries full information about the dynamical system including system parameters, dynamics and externally applied forces that arise due to system interaction with the environment. This in turn implies that the dynamical system's reaction can be considered as a natural feedback as it carries full coupled information about the dynamical system. The idea …

Ttradeoff Tables For Compression Functions: How To Invert Hash Values Radeoff Tables For Compression Functions: How To Invert Hash Values, Orhun Kara, Adem Atalay

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Hash functions are one of the ubiquitous cryptographic functions used widely for various applications such as digital signatures, data integrity, authentication protocols, MAC algorithms, RNGs, etc. Hash functions are supposed to be one-way, i.e., preimage resistant. One interesting property of hash functions is that they process arbitrary-length messages into fixed-length outputs. In general, this can be achieved mostly by applying compression functions onto the message blocks of fixed length, recursively. The length of the message is incorporated as padding in the last block prior to the hash, a procedure called the Merkle-Damgard strengthening. In this paper, we introduce a new …

A Video Encoder Design Combining Edge-Adaptive Lifting And Scalable Block-Matching With Motion Compensation, Sedat Telçeken, Ömer Nezi̇h Gerek

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This study aimed to achieve video compression by using a novel lifting-based hybrid encoder that also uses motion compensation. The proposed encoder separates video frames into temporal groups, within which certain frames are selected for producing temporal and spatial predictions over the rest of the frames. The predictions utilize spatiotemporal lifting together with motion compensation. The combination of spatial information with temporal changes is inspired from the idea of edge-adaptive lifting, which alters prediction directions in images. A further incorporation of well-known block-matching methods with different levels was observed to improve the performance. To provide the first compression results, unpredicted …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a mathematical model and vertical flight control algorithms for a new tilt-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The vehicle is capable of vertical take-off and landing (VTOL). Due to its tilt-wing structure, it can also fly horizontally. The mathematical model of the vehicle is obtained using Newton-Euler formulation. A gravity compensated PID controller is designed for altitude control, and three PID controllers are designed for attitude stabilization of the vehicle. Performances of these controllers are found to be quite satisfactory as demonstrated by indoor and outdoor flight experiments.

A Comparative Study Of Blind And Nonblind Trainings In A Single-Carrier Wimax (Ieee 802.16-2004) Radio, Ali̇ Özen

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Experimental and theoretical bit error rate performance evaluations of blind and nonblind training techniques are obtained by using a single-carrier WiMAX (IEEE 802.16-2004) radio for high-order quadrature amplitude modulation channels. Instead of using a certain type of channel profile, this study concentrates on true frequency-selective Rayleigh fading channels and also evaluates the fast fading scenario of Rayleigh channels in a real-time WiMAX radio environment around 3.5 GHz. The popular least mean squares (LMS) learning algorithm and constant modulus learning algorithm (CMA) are used as benchmarks in an investigation of nonblind and blind trainings, namely recursive least squares (RLS), modified-CMA, normalized-CMA, …

Fuzzy Logic Control For A Wind/Battery Renewable Energy Production System, Onur Özdal Mengi̇, İsmai̇l Hakki Altaş

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, a designed proportional-integral (PI) controller and a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) that fix the voltage amplitude to a constant value of 380 V and 50 Hz for loads supplied from a wind/battery hybrid energy system are explained and compared. The quality of the power produced by the wind turbine is affected by the continuous and unpredictable variations of the wind speed. Therefore, voltage-stabilizing controllers must be integrated into the system in order to keep the voltage magnitude and frequency constant at the load terminals, which requires constant voltage and frequency. A fuzzy logic-based controller to be used …

A Modified Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm And Its Application To The Multiobjective Fet Modeling Problem, Ufuk Özkaya, Fi̇li̇z Güneş Jan 2012

A Modified Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm And Its Application To The Multiobjective Fet Modeling Problem, Ufuk Özkaya, Fi̇li̇z Güneş

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper introduces a modified particle swarm algorithm to handle multiobjective optimization problems. In multiobjective PSO algorithms, the determination of Pareto optimal solutions depends directly on the strategy of assigning a best local guide to each particle. In this work, the PSO algorithm is modified to assign a best local guide to each particle by using minimum angular distance information. This algorithm is implemented to determine field-effect transistor (FET) model elements subject to the Pareto domination between the scattering parameters and operation bandwidth. Furthermore, the results are compared with those obtained by the nondominated sorting genetic algorithm-II. FET models are …

Performance Analysis Of Wind Turbine-Driven Permanent Magnet Generator With Matrix Converter, Ramasamy Bharanikumar, A Nirmal Kumar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Wind energy, among all of the renewable energy sources, has made rapid developments and significant inroads in electrical power systems. With the increased use of wind energy conversion systems (WECSs), several technologies have been developed. Since WECSs are more cost competitive, the comparison of different wind generator systems is the need of the hour. Permanent magnet generators employing these technologies have some significant advantages over conventional generators, such as no need of excitation, low volume and weight, high precision, and deletion of the gearbox. A variable-speed WECS with a permanent magnet generator and a matrix converter is proposed in this …

A Procedure To Specify The Weighting Matrices For An Optimal Load-Frequency Controller, Silvio José Pinto Simões Mariano, Jose Álvaro Nunes Pombo, Maria Do Rosário Alves Calado, Luis António Fialho Marcelino Ferreira

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The linear quadratic optimal regulator is one of the most powerful techniques for designing multivariable control systems. The performance of the system is specified in terms of a cost, which is the integral of a weighted quadratic function of the system state and control inputs, that is to be minimized by the optimal controller. The components of the state cost weighting matrix, Q, and the control cost weighting matrix, R, are ours to choose in mathematically specifying the way we wish the system to perform. Changing these matrices, we can modify the transient behavior of the closed-loop system. This paper …

A Simulator Based On An Energy-Efficient Gpr Algorithm Modified For The Scanning Of All Types Of Regions, Levent Seyfi̇, Ercan Yaldiz

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

An improved simulator is presented for the simulation of an energy-efficient ground-penetrating radar (GPR) using the 2D finite-difference time-domain method in the MATLAB environment. This simulator is novel in that it improves on previous work that did not involve scanning a buried object or the intermittent sublayer beneath the ground using an energy-efficient algorithm. The present simulator examines the scanned region and automatically chooses either a common algorithm or an energy-efficient algorithm, depending on the region. The simulator provides the possibility of using an energy-efficient GPR without the need for the operator to determine the suitability of the scanned region. …

In this paper, performance analysis of joint source-channel coding techniques for error-resilient transmission of three dimensional (3D) models are presented. In particular, packet based transmission scenarios are analyzed. The packet loss resilient methods are classified into two groups according to progressive compression schemes employed: Compressed Progressive Meshes (CPM) based methods and wavelet based methods. In the first group, layers of CPM algorithm are protected unequally by Forward Error Correction (FEC) using Reed Solomon (RS) codes. In the second group, embedded bitstream obtained from wavelet based coding is protected unequally with FEC as well. Both groups of methods are scalable with …

In this study, a transparent WorldFIP/ATM bridge was designed and implemented in order to access devices on WorldFIP via an ATM network. This designed bridge may also provide control of the devices over wide area networks. The bridge's …

Reconfigurable Antenna Structure For Rfid System Applications Using Varactor-Loading Technique, Yusuf Sevi̇nç, Adnan Kaya Jan 2012

Reconfigurable Antenna Structure For Rfid System Applications Using Varactor-Loading Technique, Yusuf Sevi̇nç, Adnan Kaya

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A novel method is presented for electrically tuning the frequency of a compact radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag antenna. A tuning circuit, comprising a radio frequency (RF) switch and discrete passive components, was completely integrated into the antenna element, which is thus free of DC wires. The low-profile printed antennas were fabricated together with the layouts of the DC control circuits and other RF/baseband circuit footprints. A surface-mounted varactor was applied as a frequency-tuning element at the proper places of the meandered slots in the compact antenna. Prototype designs showed that the in-band frequency (return loss < 10 dB) was tunable from 2.4 GHz to 2.8 GHz when the bias voltage varied from 4 V to 7 V. The impact of the tuning circuit on the antenna's return loss and radiation pattern were experimentally studied through comparison with the performance of a reference antenna not incorporating the tuning circuit. The proposed frequency tuning concept can be extended to more complex compact structures as well as other types of antennas to give enhanced electrical performance.

Trellis-Based Optimization Of Layer Extraction For Rate Adaptation In Real-Time Scalable Stereo Video Coding, Nükhet Özbek

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The concept of quality layers (QLs) has been adopted in the scalable video coding standard to enable optimal rate adaptation of precoded video in the rate-distortion sense. QLs were previously extended to stereo and multiple-view scalable video for efficient transport of 3DTV over the Internet. However, it is not possible to use the QL method in applications that require real-time encoding since the priority determination process assumes the availability of the whole video sequence. In this work, a trellis-based online rate adaptation is proposed for real-time scalable stereo video coding, with a delay of 1 group of pictures (GoP). The …

Fast Software Multiplication In F_2[X] For Embedded Processors, Serdar Süer Erdem

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

We present a novel method for fast multiplication of polynomials over F_2 which can be implemented efficiently in embedded software. Fast polynomial multiplication methods are needed for the efficient implementation of some cryptographic and coding applications. The proposed method follows a strategy to reduce the memory accesses for input data and intermediate values during computation. This strategy speeds up the binary polynomial multiplication significantly on typical embedded processors with limited memory bandwidth. These multiplications are usually performed by the comb method or the Karatsuba-based methods in embedded software. The proposed method has speed and memory advantages over these methods on …

We present a new formulation method to solve the kinematic problem of multiarm robot systems. Our major aims were to formulize the kinematic problem in a compact closed form and avoid singularity problems in the inverse kinematic solution. The new formulation method is based on screw theory and quaternion algebra. Screw theory is an effective way to establish a global description of a rigid body and avoids singularities due to the use of the local coordinates. The dual quaternion, the most compact and efficient dual operator to express screw displacement, was used as a screw motion operator to obtain the …

Effects Of Diacritics On Turkish Information Retrieval, Adi̇l Alpkoçak, Meltem Ceylan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

We investigate the effects of improper use of diacritics in the Turkish alphabet on information retrieval. A diacritic is simply a supplementary sign added to a letter to change the sound value of the letter, and the Turkish alphabet has 5 special letters derived from Latin by adding different diacritics. The statistical analysis performed in this study shows that retrieval performance significantly decreases when documents and queries contain letters with different forms, such that documents consist of letters with diacritics while queries consist of standard Latin letters and vice versa. In order to tackle this challenge, we propose 3 approaches: …
