Identifying And Localizing Intracellular Nanoparticles Using Raman Spectroscopy, Jennifer Dorney, Franck Bonnier, Amaya Garcia, Alan Casey, Gordon Chambers, Hugh Byrne

Articles

Raman microscopy is employed to spectroscopically image biological cells previously exposed to fluorescently labelled polystyrene nanoparticles and, in combination with K-means clustering and Principal Component Analysis (PCA), is demonstrated to be capable of localising the nanoparticles and identifying the subcellular environment based on the molecular spectroscopic signatures. The neutral nanoparticles of 50 nm or 100 nm, as characterised by dynamic light scattering, are shown to be non-toxic to a human lung adenocarcinoma cell-line (A549), according to a range of cytotoxicity assays including Neutral Red, Alamar Blue, Coomassie Blue and (3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT). Confocal fluorescence microscopy identifies intracellular fluorescence due to …

Comparative Microbial Sampling From Eutrophic Caves In Slovenia And Slovakia Using Rida ®Count Test Kits, Janez Mulec, Václav Krištůfek, Alica Chroňáková

International Journal of Speleology

RIDA®COUNT test plates were used as an easy-to-handle and rapid indicator of microbial counts in karst ecosystems of several caves in Slovakia and Slovenia. All of the caves had a high organic input from water streams, tourists, roosting bat colonies or terrestrial surroundings. We sampled swabs, water and air samples to test robustness and universality of the RIDA®COUNT test kit (R-Biopharm AG, Germany, http://www.r-biopharm.com/) for quantification of total bacteria, coliforms, yeast and mold. Using data from swabs (colony-forming units per cm2) we proposed a scale for description of biocontamination level or superficial microbial load of cave niches. Based …

Diagenesis Of A Drapery Speleothem From Castañar Cave: From Dissolution To Dolomitization, Andrea Martín-Pérez, Rebeca Martín-García, Ana M. Alonso-Zarza

International Journal of Speleology

A drapery speleothem (DRA-1) from Castañar Cave in Spain was subjected to a detailed petrographical study in order to identify its primary and diagenetic features. The drapery’s present day characteristics are the result of the combined effects of the primary and diagenetic processes that DRA-1 underwent. Its primary minerals are calcite, aragonite and huntite. Calcite is the main constituent of the speleothem, whereas aragonite forms as frostwork over the calcite. Huntite is the main mineral of moonmilk which covers the tips of aragonite. These primary minerals have undergone a set of diagenetic processes, which include: 1) partial dissolution or corrosion …

Coulomb-Driven Cluster-Glass Behavior In Mn-Intercalated Ti1+Ys2, P. M. Shand, A. L. Meyer, M. Streicher, A. Wilson, T. Rash, Tim Kidd, L. H. Strauss Jan 2012

Coulomb-Driven Cluster-Glass Behavior In Mn-Intercalated Ti1+Ys2, P. M. Shand, A. L. Meyer, M. Streicher, A. Wilson, T. Rash, Tim Kidd, L. H. Strauss

Faculty Work

We have investigated the low-temperature spin-glasslike phase in the intercalated transition-metal dichalcogenide Mn0.09Ti1.1S2. A departure from Curie–Weiss behavior in the paramagnetic regime indicated the formation of small ferromagnetically correlated clusters. The Vogel–Fulcher law provided an excellent description of relaxation times in the vicinity of the transition, showing that the glasslike phase occurs due to interaction between the clusters. Cole–Cole plots for data close to the transition were linear, which is consistent with a simple exponential distribution of cluster sizes. A Monte Carlo simulation of the dichalcogenide system, including excess self-intercalated Ti ions, gave an …

Butterfly Community Dynamics In A Restored Prairie Used For Biofuel Production, Nicholas E. Tebockhorst, Jarrett D. Pfrimmer, Mark C. Myers Jan 2012

Butterfly Community Dynamics In A Restored Prairie Used For Biofuel Production, Nicholas E. Tebockhorst, Jarrett D. Pfrimmer, Mark C. Myers

Undergraduate Student Work

The conversion of native Midwestern tallgrass prairie to monoculture production of corn (Zea mays) and soybeans (Glycene max) for food and fuel has resulted in a significant decrease in habitat for insect pollinators, including butterflies. Compared to conventional biofuels such as corn ethanol, prairie biomass produces greater energy yields while providing high quality wildlife habitat and protecting soil and water resources. My research took place at Cedar River Natural Resource Area in Black Hawk County Iowa, USA. In spring 2009, the University of Northern Iowa’s Tallgrass Prairie Center seeded 48 research plots in conventional fields to …

Bird Use Of Heterogeneous Prairie Biofuel Production Plots In Black Hawk County, Iowa, Jarrett Pfrimmer, Mark C. Myers, Benjamin Hoksch, Drew Miller

Undergraduate Student Work

Agricultural intensification has driven the loss of >90% of native grassland habitats in the Midwest. Consequently, grassland birds have declined more drastically than any other North American guild. Current biofuel production systems rely on high input monoculture crops that provide little habitat value to most grassland birds. The University of Northern Iowa’s Tallgrass Prairie Center is exploring the feasibility of growing and harvesting diverse mixes of native prairie vegetation for use as a sustainable biofuel in a manner that also provides high quality bird habitat. In 2009, we seeded 48 research plots on three soil types with one of four …

Information Extraction From Text, Jing Jiang Jan 2012

Information Extraction From Text, Jing Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Information extraction is the task of finding structured information from unstructured or semi-structured text. It is an important task in text mining and has been extensively studied in various research communities including natural language processing, information retrieval and Web mining. It has a wide range of applications in domains such as biomedical literature mining and business intelligence. Two fundamental tasks of information extraction are named entity recognition and relation extraction. The former refers to finding names of entities such as people, organizations and locations. The latter refers to finding the semantic relations such as FounderOf and HeadquarteredIn between entities. In …

Cooperation As A Service In Vanet: Implementation And Simulation Results, Hajar Mousannif, Ismail Khalil, Stephan Olariu

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The past decade has witnessed the emergence of Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANET), specializing from the well-known Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET) to Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) wireless communications. While the original motivation for Vehicular Networks was to promote traffic safety, recently it has become increasingly obvious that Vehicular Networks open new vistas for Internet access, providing weather or road condition, parking availability, distributed gaming, and advertisement. In previous papers [27,28], we introduced Cooperation as a Service (CaaS); a new service-oriented solution which enables improved and new services for the road users and an optimized use of the road network …

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Large fine mode-dominated aerosols (submicron radius) in size distributions retrieved from the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) have been observed after fog or low-altitude cloud dissipation events. These column-integrated size distributions have been obtained at several sites in many regions of the world, typically after evaporation of low-altitude cloud such as stratocumulus or fog. Retrievals with cloud-processed aerosol are sometimes bimodal in the accumulation mode with the larger-size mode often similar to 0.4-0.5 mu m radius (volume distribution); the smaller mode, typically similar to 0.12 to similar to 0.20 mu m, may be interstitial aerosol that were not modified by incorporation …

Unusual Holocene Serpulid-Tufu Bioherms, Enriquillo Valley, Dominican Republic: Morphologies And Paleoenvironmental Implications, Kelsey Winsor, H. Allen Curran, Lisa Greer, Bosiljka Glumac Jan 2012

Unusual Holocene Serpulid-Tufu Bioherms, Enriquillo Valley, Dominican Republic: Morphologies And Paleoenvironmental Implications, Kelsey Winsor, H. Allen Curran, Lisa Greer, Bosiljka Glumac

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

During the early Holocene, rising waters of the Caribbean Sea flooded the Enriquillo Valley of southwestern Dominican Republic. A fringing coral reef developed and flourished along the margins of the Enriquillo Seaway for several millennia, until the seaway became restricted due to a combination of slowed sea-level rise, tectonic uplift, and increased sedimentation. Following changes in salinity and death of the coral reef by about 5 ka, meter-scale bioherms composed of the tubes of opportunistic, aggregating serpulid worms and associated with carbonate tufa that precipitated from the ancient lake or declining seaway waters formed along the steep walls of the …

Recovery Of Carbonate Sand Beaches On San Salvador Island, Bahamas From Damage By Hurricane Frances (2004), H. Allen Curran, Mia Schultz-Baer, Kathryn Durkin, Bosiljka Glumac

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

East Beach and Hanna Bay Beach, located on the northeast coast of San Salvador, were two of the island's beaches most heavily impacted by Hurricane Frances (category 3) on September 2, 2004. A maximum storm surge of 3.1 m was reported for East Beach, with erosion occurring up to 70 m inland from the wave-break line and resulting in scarps cut into dunes of up to 1.5 m height. In January 2005, 5 beach profile stations along 1 km of East Beach and 3 stations along Hanna Bay Beach were established to monitor long-term coastal recovery from hurricane damage. East …

Distribution Of Oolitic Sediment Along A Beach-To-Offshore Transect, Pigeon Cay, Cat Island, Bahamas: New Insights Into Modern Ooid Formation, Bosiljka Glumac, H. Allen Curran, Madeline M. Weigner, Sarah A. Motti, Sara B. Pruss Jan 2012

Distribution Of Oolitic Sediment Along A Beach-To-Offshore Transect, Pigeon Cay, Cat Island, Bahamas: New Insights Into Modern Ooid Formation, Bosiljka Glumac, H. Allen Curran, Madeline M. Weigner, Sarah A. Motti, Sara B. Pruss

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Ooids are a common component of ancient carbonate rocks, but their origin and distribution in Holocene deposits and modem carbonate sands are not fully understood. Even though ooids are well documented from several localities in the Bahamian Archipelago, their occurrence on Cat Island has not been previously studied in detail. In this study we examined the composition and texture of beach sand and six sediment samples collected from the sea floor at approximately 50-meter intervals along an estimated 300 m transect at Pigeon Cay, Cat Island.

Possible Early Foraminiferans In Post-Sturtian (716-635 Ma) Cap Carbonates, Tanja Bosak, Daniel J.G. Lahr, Sara B. Pruss, Francis A. Macdonald, Andrew J. Gooday, Lilly Dalton, Emily D. Matys Jan 2012

Possible Early Foraminiferans In Post-Sturtian (716-635 Ma) Cap Carbonates, Tanja Bosak, Daniel J.G. Lahr, Sara B. Pruss, Francis A. Macdonald, Andrew J. Gooday, Lilly Dalton, Emily D. Matys

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Foraminifera are an ecologically important group of modern heterotrophic amoeboid eukaryotes whose naked and testate ancestors are thought to have evolved ~1 Ga ago. However, the single-chambered agglutinated tests of these protists appear in the fossil record only after ca. 580 Ma, coinciding with the appearance of macro scopic and mineralized animals. Here we report the discovery of small, slender tubular microfossils in the Sturtian (ca. 716-635 Ma) cap carbonate of the Rasthof Formation in Namibia. The tubes are 200-1300 μm long and 20-70μm wide, and preserve apertures and variably wide lumens, folds, constrictions, and ridges. Their sometimes fl exible …

New Evidence On The Mechanics Of Wing Unfolding In Dermaptera (Insecta), Fabian Haas, Justin Tan Chek Hwen, Hung Bun Tang Jan 2012

New Evidence On The Mechanics Of Wing Unfolding In Dermaptera (Insecta), Fabian Haas, Justin Tan Chek Hwen, Hung Bun Tang

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The wing unfolding in Dermaptera is re-analysed for two species, Auchenomus sp. (Spongiphoridae) and Timomenus lugens (Bormans, 1894) (Forficulidae), based on several digital movie sequences made in the earwigs' natural environment. The frames were separated and numbered sequentially to establish the time line of unfolding and (where available) folding. It is shown that the steps described earlier in contributions of the first author are confirmed, with the exception of the drivers. It has been assumed that the cerci are essential to unfold the wings. The current contribution clearly shows that this is not the case in all species: the wings …

Infeasible Full-Newton-Step Interior-Point Method For The Linear Complementarity Problems, Antré Marquel Drummer Jan 2012

Infeasible Full-Newton-Step Interior-Point Method For The Linear Complementarity Problems, Antré Marquel Drummer

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In this tesis, we present a new Infeasible Interior-Point Method (IPM) for monotone Linear Complementarity Problem (LPC). The advantage of the method is that it uses full Newton-steps, thus, avoiding the calculation of the step size at each iteration. However, by suitable choice of parameters the iterates are forced to stay in the neighborhood of the central path, hence, still guaranteeing the global convergence of the method under strict feasibility assumption. The number of iterations necessary to find -approximate solution of the problem matches the best known iteration bounds for these types of methods. The preliminary implementation of the method …

Homogeneous Symplectic Manifolds Of The Galilei Group, Michael S. Davis Jan 2012

Homogeneous Symplectic Manifolds Of The Galilei Group, Michael S. Davis

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis we classify all symplectic manifolds admitting a transitive, 2-form preserving action of the Galilei group G. Using the moment map and a theorem of Kirillov-Kostant-Souriau, we reduce the problem to that of classifying the coadjoint orbits of a central extension of G discovered by Bargmann. We then develop a systematic inductive technique to construct a cross section of the coadjoint action. The resulting symplectic orbits are interpreted as the manifolds of classical motions of elementary particles with or without spin, mass, and color.

Properties Of Weighted Generalized Beta Distribution Of The Second Kind, Yuan Ye Jan 2012

Properties Of Weighted Generalized Beta Distribution Of The Second Kind, Yuan Ye

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Author's abstract: In this thesis, a new class of weighted generalized beta distribution of the second kind (WGB2) is presented. The construction makes use of the conservability approach' which includes the size or length-biased distribution as a special case. The class of WGB2 is used as descriptive models for the distribution of income. The results that are presented generalize the generalized beta distribution of second kind (GB2). The properties of these distributions including behavior of pdf, cdf, hazard functions, moments, mean, variance, coefficient of variation (CV), coefficient of skewness (CS), coefficient of kurtosis (CK) are obtained. The moments of other …

Hypotheses Generation As Supervised Link Discovery With Automated Class Labeling On Large-Scale Biomedical Concept Networks, Jayasimha R. Katukuri, Ying Xie, Vijay Raghavan, Ashish Gupta Jan 2012

Hypotheses Generation As Supervised Link Discovery With Automated Class Labeling On Large-Scale Biomedical Concept Networks, Jayasimha R. Katukuri, Ying Xie, Vijay Raghavan, Ashish Gupta

Faculty Articles

Computational approaches to generate hypotheses from biomedical literature have been studied intensively in recent years. Nevertheless, it still remains a challenge to automatically discover novel, cross-silo biomedical hypotheses from large-scale literature repositories. In order to address this challenge, we first model a biomedical literature repository as a comprehensive network of biomedical concepts and formulate hypotheses generation as a process of link discovery on the concept network. We extract the relevant information from the biomedical literature corpus and generate a concept network and concept-author map on a cluster using Map-Reduce framework. We extract a set of heterogeneous features such as random …

Measuring Defect Datasets Sensitivity To Attributes Variation, Izzat M. Alsmadi Jan 2012

Measuring Defect Datasets Sensitivity To Attributes Variation, Izzat M. Alsmadi

Computer Science Faculty Publications (Archived)

The study of the correlation between software project and product attributes and its modules quality status (faulty or not) is the subject of several research papers in the software testing and maintenance fields. In this paper, a tool is built to change the values of software data sets' attributes and study the impact of this change on the modules' defect status. The goal is to find those specific attributes that highly correlate with the module defect attribute. An algorithm is developed to automatically predict the module defect status based on the values of the module attributes and based on their …
