Identification And Efficient Estimation Of The Natural Direct Effect Among The Untreated, Samuel D. Lendle, Mark J. Van Der Laan Dec 2011

Identification And Efficient Estimation Of The Natural Direct Effect Among The Untreated, Samuel D. Lendle, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The natural direct effect (NDE), or the effect of an exposure on an outcome if an intermediate variable was set to the level it would have been in the absence of the exposure, is often of interest to investigators. In general, the statistical parameter associated with the NDE is difficult to estimate in the non-parametric model, particularly when the intermediate variable is continuous or high dimensional. In this paper we introduce a new causal parameter called the natural direct effect among the untreated, discus identifiability assumptions, and show that this new parameter is equivalent to the NDE in a randomized …

2011 Fall Engr333 Project Final Report, Fall 2011 Engr333

ENGR 333

Analysis of the Bunker Interpretive Center (BIC) began during the spring of 2011 with the Engineering 382 Instrumentation Lab. To determine the energy use at the BIC, sensing equipment was placed on 44 different energy consuming devices, ranging from pumps to lights to heating and ventilation (HVAC) equipment. These data were collected over the spring and summer and then analyzed by the Engineering 333 Thermal Systems Design class during the fall of 2011. The class was tasked with determining whether or not the BIC was eligible for Energy Star certification. While the building was built to be LEED Gold certified, …

Empirical Study Of An Intelligent Argumentation System In Mcdm, Xiaoqing Liu, Rubal Wanchoo, Ravi Santosh Arvapally Dec 2011

Empirical Study Of An Intelligent Argumentation System In Mcdm, Xiaoqing Liu, Rubal Wanchoo, Ravi Santosh Arvapally

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Intelligent argumentation based collaborative decision-making system assists stakeholders in a decision-making group to assess various alternatives under different criterion based on the argumentation. a performance score of each alternative under every criterion in Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) is represented in a decision matrix and it denotes satisfaction of the criteria by that alternative. the process of determining the performance scores of alternatives in a decision matrix for criterion could be controversial sometimes because of the subjective nature of criterion. We developed a framework for acquiring performance scores in a decision matrix for multi-criteria decision making using an intelligent argumentation and …

Multimessenger Astronomy: Modeling Gravitational And Electromagnetic Radiation From A Stellar Binary System, Kevin Kern Dec 2011

Multimessenger Astronomy: Modeling Gravitational And Electromagnetic Radiation From A Stellar Binary System, Kevin Kern

Honors Theses

Our Solar System is one of roughly 100 billion other stars that make up the Milky Way Galaxy. Two-thirds of all stars are paired off, forming a gravitational bond between one another. Such systems are known as stellar binaries. Although these binaries are prevalent there is much yet to be learned about their formation, evolution, and interactions. The approach taken in this thesis is to produce simulated data representing the expected measurements that an observational astronomer would collect. Specifically, we have simulated the data from an eclipsing binary light curve, spectroscopic velocity curve, and the gravitational wave times series form …

Photocatalytic Activity Of Zinc Oxide Thin Films Prepared By Dc Sputter Deposition And Thermal Oxidation, Robert Louder Dec 2011

Photocatalytic Activity Of Zinc Oxide Thin Films Prepared By Dc Sputter Deposition And Thermal Oxidation, Robert Louder

Honors Theses

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a wide-bandgap semiconductor with a broad range of applications, such as photocatalysis. The photocatalytic properties of ZnO result from the highly oxidizing holes and reducing electrons that are induced on the ZnO surface by ultraviolet (UV) light. The efficiency of electron-hole pair formation is therefore critical for photocatalysis, and thus the optical quality of the films in the UV region is of critical importance. ZnO thin films have been fabricated using DC sputter deposition of Zn-metal films followed by thermal oxidation at different temperatures (300, 600, and 900°C). Characterization of the optical properties of the resulting …

Mechanism Of G Protein Beta-Gamma Assembly Mediated By Phosducin-Like Protein 1, Chun Wan Jeffrey Lai Dec 2011

Mechanism Of G Protein Beta-Gamma Assembly Mediated By Phosducin-Like Protein 1, Chun Wan Jeffrey Lai

Theses and Dissertations

G-protein coupled receptor signaling (GPCR) is essential for regulating a large variety of hormonal, sensory and neuronal processes in eukaryotic cells. Because the regulation of these physiological responses is critical, GPCR signaling pathways are carefully controlled at different levels within the cascade. Phosducin-like protein 1 (PhLP1) can bind the G protein βγ dimer and participate in GPCR signaling. Recent evidence has supported the concept that PhLP1 can serve as a co-chaperone of the eukaryotic cytosolic chaperonin complex CCT/TRiC to mediate G βγ assembly. Although a general mechanism of PhLP1-mediated G βγ assembly has been postulated, many of the details about …

Hydrological Parameter Estimations From A Conservative Tracer Test With Variable-Density Effects At The Boise Hydrogeophysical Research Site, B. Dafflon, Warren Barrash, Michael Cardiff, T. C. Johnson Dec 2011

Hydrological Parameter Estimations From A Conservative Tracer Test With Variable-Density Effects At The Boise Hydrogeophysical Research Site, B. Dafflon, Warren Barrash, Michael Cardiff, T. C. Johnson

CGISS Publications and Presentations

Reliable predictions of groundwater flow and solute transport require an estimation of the detailed distribution of the parameters (e.g., hydraulic conductivity, effective porosity) controlling these processes. However, such parameters are difficult to estimate because of the inaccessibility and complexity of the subsurface. In this regard, developments in parameter estimation techniques and investigations of field experiments are still challenging and necessary to improve our understanding and the prediction of hydrological processes. Here we analyze a conservative tracer test conducted at the Boise Hydrogeophysical Research Site in 2001 in a heterogeneous unconfined fluvial aquifer. Some relevant characteristics of this test include: variable-density …

Lesson Not Learned: Deepwater Horizon Research And Media Coverage Exposes Gaps In Knowledge And Risky Protocol Within The Oil Industry, Lauren Haller Dec 2011

Lesson Not Learned: Deepwater Horizon Research And Media Coverage Exposes Gaps In Knowledge And Risky Protocol Within The Oil Industry, Lauren Haller

Honors Theses

An insatiable thirst for oil has led poorly coordinated, risk-prone megasystems deeper into the ocean in search of new oil reserves. Profit-driven agendas at the corporate level have a top-down effect within these megasystems. Cost-cutting and risk-downplaying leaves the field employees unprepared to handle emergencies. A series of costly mistakes led to the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill, which caused extensive damage to an already fragile ecosystem in the Gulf of Mexico. The wealth and political influence of the oil industry overpowers lax regulatory agencies and legislation-even though media and research has exposed frustrating parallels between the Deepwater Horizon …

Lagrange's Theory Of Analytical Functions And His Ideal Of Purity Of Method, Giovanni Ferraro, Marco Panza Dec 2011

Lagrange's Theory Of Analytical Functions And His Ideal Of Purity Of Method, Giovanni Ferraro, Marco Panza

MPP Published Research

We reconstruct essential features of Lagrange’s theory of analytical functions by exhibiting its structure and basic assumptions, as well as its main shortcomings. We explain Lagrange’s notions of function and algebraic quantity, and we concentrate on power-series expansions, on the algorithm for derivative functions, and the remainder theorem—especially on the role this theorem has in solving geometric and mechanical problems. We thus aim to provide a better understanding of Enlightenment mathematics and to show that the foundations of mathematics did not, for Lagrange, concern the solidity of its ultimate bases, but rather purity of method—the generality and internal organization of …

Fragile Binary Candidates In The Sdss Dr8 Spectroscopic Archive, J. K. Zhao, Terry D. Oswalt, G. Zhao

Publications

We present a catalog of 80 very wide fragile binary candidates (projected separations >10,000 AU) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release Eight spectral archive. The pairs were selected based on proper motion, radial velocity, metallicity, and photometric parallax criteria. The angular separations of these pairs range from 3'' to 250''. The peak in the metallicity distribution of these pairs is about −0.5 dex of solar metallicity. Space motions and reduced proper motion diagrams indicate that all these pairs are members of the disk. The chromospheric activity index SHK of each component in 38 binary candidates having spectra …

A General Model For Continuous Noninvasive Pulmonary Artery Pressure Estimation, Robert Anthony Smith Dec 2011

A General Model For Continuous Noninvasive Pulmonary Artery Pressure Estimation, Robert Anthony Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Elevated pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) is a significant healthcare risk. Continuous monitoring for patients with elevated PAP is crucial for effective treatment, yet the most accurate method is invasive and expensive, and cannot be performed repeatedly. Noninvasive methods exist but are inaccurate, expensive, and cannot be used for continuous monitoring. We present a machine learning model based on heart sounds that estimates pulmonary artery pressure with enough accuracy to exclude an invasive diagnostic operation, allowing for consistent monitoring of heart condition in suspect patients without the cost and risk of invasive monitoring. We conduct a greedy search through 38 possible …

Towards Node Cooperation In Mobile Opportunistic Networks, Abderrahmen Mtibaa, Khaled Harras Dec 2011

Towards Node Cooperation In Mobile Opportunistic Networks, Abderrahmen Mtibaa, Khaled Harras

Computer Science Faculty Works

Mobile devices such as smart-phones and tablets are becoming ubiquitous, with ever increasing communication capabilities. In situations where the necessary infrastructure is unavailable, costly, or overloaded, opportunistically connecting theses devices becomes a challenging area of research. Data is disseminated using nodes that store-carry-and-forward messages across the network. In such networks, node cooperation is fundamental for the message delivery process. Therefore, the lack of node cooperation (e.g., a node may refuse to act as a relay and settle for sending and receiving its own data) causes considerable degradation in the network. In order to ensure node cooperation in such networks, we …

Development Of A Strontium-87 Ion Interferometer, Christopher Joseph Erickson

Theses and Dissertations

I present the construction of a low-velocity intense source (LVIS) of laser-cooled neutral strontium using permanent ring magnets. The LVIS consists of a magneto-optical trap from which cold strontium is extracted in a well-collimated beam. I also present the development and implementation of a full suite of low-noise, high-bandwidth laser control electronics including a microcontroller unit. This microcontroller remotely controls and monitors the current driver, temperature controller, and PID lock circuit for each diode laser simultaneously. The current driver output is accurate to within 2 micro-amps and repeatable to with a few nano-amps. The noise spectral density of the current …

Relating Dynamic Protein Interactions Of Metallochaperones With Metal Transfer At The Single-Molecule Level, J. J. Benítez, A. M. Keller, D. L. Huffman, Liliya A. Yatsunyk, A. C. Rosenzweig, P. Chen Dec 2011

Relating Dynamic Protein Interactions Of Metallochaperones With Metal Transfer At The Single-Molecule Level, J. J. Benítez, A. M. Keller, D. L. Huffman, Liliya A. Yatsunyk, A. C. Rosenzweig, P. Chen

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

Metallochaperones undertake specific interactions with their target proteins to deliver metal ions inside cells. Understanding how these protein interactions are coupled with the underlying metal transfer process is important, but challenging because they are weak and dynamic. Here we use a nanovesicle trapping scheme to enable single-molecule FRET measurements of the weak, dynamic interactions between the copper chaperone Hahl and the fourth metal binding domain (MBD4) of WDP. By monitoring the behaviors of single interacting pairs, we visualize their interactions in real time in both the absence and the presence of various equivalents of Cu(1+). Regardless of the proteins' metallation …

A Horizontal Edges Bound For The Independence Number Of A Graph, Michelle Grigsby Dec 2011

A Horizontal Edges Bound For The Independence Number Of A Graph, Michelle Grigsby

Theses and Dissertations

The independence number alpha of a graph is the size of a maximum independent set of vertices. An independent set is a set of vertices where every pair of vertices in non-adjacent. This number is known to be hard to compute. The bound we worked with is defined as epsilon = max[e(v)-eh(v)] over all the vertices in the vertex set, V(G). e(v) is the number of vertices at even distance from v. eh(v) is the number of edges both of whose endpoints are at even distance from v. Epsilon can be calculated in polynomial time. Siemion Fajtlowicz proved that alpha …

The Sn 393-Snr Rx J1713.7-3946 (G347.3-0.5) Connection, Robert A. Fesen, Richard Kremer, Daniel Patnaude, Dan Milisavljevic Dec 2011

The Sn 393-Snr Rx J1713.7-3946 (G347.3-0.5) Connection, Robert A. Fesen, Richard Kremer, Daniel Patnaude, Dan Milisavljevic

Dartmouth Scholarship

Although the connection of the Chinese "guest" star of 393 AD with the Galactic supernova remnant RX J1713.7-3946 (G347.3-0.5) made by Wang et al. in 1997 is consistent with the remnant's relatively young properties and the guest star's projected position within the "tail" of the constellation Scorpius, there are difficulties with such an association. The brief Chinese texts concerning the 393 AD guest star make no comment about its apparent brightness, stating only that it disappeared after eight months. However, at the remnant's current estimated 1-1.3 kpc distance and A V 3, its supernova (SN) should have been a visually …

Background-Oriented Schlieren Pattern Optimization, Jeffery E. Hartberger Dec 2011

Background-Oriented Schlieren Pattern Optimization, Jeffery E. Hartberger

Theses and Dissertations

This paper describes a test series to investigate background patterns used for the Background-Oriented Schlieren field density measurement technique. Several varying background patterns were substituted under similar fluid density conditions to visualize and isolate the effects of patterns in the background images. A qualitative comparison was completed of the flow visualization results of each background pattern to categorize background conditions that improved the flow visualization image. Changes in background patterns revealed significant changes in flow visualization. Pattern contrast, spacing and sizing all played large parts in the quality of the visual density gradient imaging during the test series.

The Chernobyl Disaster : Reflection After 25 Years = 切爾諾貝爾核災難25年後的反思, Valentin Yakushik

South South Forum 南南論壇

The adverse technogenic impact of industrial accidents that have gripped the world in recent decades definitely testifies to the problem-ridden character of contemporary economic and technological development. This is especially evident on the example of nuclear industry, which proved to be a source of dangerous pollution in case of potential (and real) catastrophes, as recently borne out by the Fukushima disaster. In this regard, the issues of Chernobyl disaster once again become the part of the discourse centered on the analysis of global nuclear industry problems. Likewise, current situation in Ukraine demands deeper investigation of the problems of technological development, …

Paleomagnetic Constraints On Deformation Of Superfast-Spread Oceanic Crust Exposed At Pito Deep Rift, Andrew J. Horst, R. J. Varga, J. S. Gee, J. A. Karson

Natural Resources and Earth Sciences Faculty Research

The uppermost oceanic crust produced at the superfast spreading (∼142 km Ma −1, full‐spreading rate) southern East Pacific Rise (EPR) during the Gauss Chron is exposed in a tectonic window along the northeastern wall of the Pito Deep Rift. Paleomagnetic analysis of fully oriented dike (62) and gabbro (5) samples from two adjacent study areas yield bootstrapped mean remanence directions of 38.9° ± 8.1°, −16.7° ± 15.6°, n = 23 (Area A) and 30.4° ± 8.0°, −25.1° ± 12.9°, n = 44 (Area B), both are significantly distinct from the Geocentric Axial Dipole expected direction at 23° S. Regional tectonics …

A Perceptual Metric For Photo Retouching, Eric Kee, Hany Farid Dec 2011

A Perceptual Metric For Photo Retouching, Eric Kee, Hany Farid

Dartmouth Scholarship

In recent years, advertisers and magazine editors have been widely criticized for taking digital photo retouching to an extreme. Impossibly thin, tall, and wrinkle- and blemish-free models are routinely splashed onto billboards, advertisements, and magazine covers. The ubiquity of these unrealistic and highly idealized images has been linked to eating disorders and body image dissatisfaction in men, women, and children. In response, several countries have considered legislating the labeling of retouched photos. We describe a quantitative and perceptually meaningful metric of photo retouching. Photographs are rated on the degree to which they have been digitally altered by explicitly modeling and …

Framework To Secure Cloud-Based Medical Image Storage And Management System Communications, Timothy James Rostrom Dec 2011

Framework To Secure Cloud-Based Medical Image Storage And Management System Communications, Timothy James Rostrom

Theses and Dissertations

Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) have been traditionally constrained to the premises of the healthcare provider. This has limited the availability of these systems in many parts of the world and mandated major costs in infrastructure for those who employ them. Public cloud services could be a solution that eases the cost of ownership and provides greater flexibility for PACS implementations. This could make it possible to bring medical imaging services to places where it was previously unavailable and reduce the costs associated with these services for those who utilize them. Moving these systems to public cloud infrastructure requires …

Second-Order Weak Lensing From Modified Gravity, R. Ali Vanderveld, Robert R. Caldwell, Jason Rhodes Dec 2011

Second-Order Weak Lensing From Modified Gravity, R. Ali Vanderveld, Robert R. Caldwell, Jason Rhodes

Dartmouth Scholarship

We explore the sensitivity of weak gravitational lensing to second-order corrections to the spacetime metric within a cosmological adaptation of the parametrized post-Newtonian framework. Whereas one might expect nonlinearities of the gravitational field to introduce non-Gaussianity into the statistics of the lensing convergence field, we show that such corrections are actually always small within a broad class of scalar-tensor theories of gravity. We show this by first computing the weak lensing convergence within our parametrized framework to second order in the gravitational potential, and then computing the relevant post-Newtonian parameters for scalar-tensor gravity theories. In doing so we show that …

A Speculative Approach To Parallelization In Particle Swarm Optimization, Matthew Gardner, Andrew Mcnabb, Kevin Seppi Dec 2011

A Speculative Approach To Parallelization In Particle Swarm Optimization, Matthew Gardner, Andrew Mcnabb, Kevin Seppi

Faculty Publications

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) has previously been parallelized primarily by distributing the computation corresponding to particles across multiple processors. In these approaches, the only benefit of additional processors is an increased swarm size. However, in many cases this is not efficient when scaled to very large swarm sizes (on very large clusters). Current methods cannot answer well the question: “How can 1000 processors be fully utilized when 50 or 100 particles is the most efficient swarm size?” In this paper we attempt to answer that question with a speculative approach to the parallelization of PSO that we refer to as …

Drift Detection Using Uncertainty Distribution Divergence, Patrick Lindstrom, Brian Mac Namee, Sarah Jane Delany Dec 2011

Drift Detection Using Uncertainty Distribution Divergence, Patrick Lindstrom, Brian Mac Namee, Sarah Jane Delany

Conference papers

Concept drift is believed to be prevalent inmost data gathered from naturally occurring processes andthus warrants research by the machine learning community. There are a myriad of approaches to concept drift handlingwhich have been shown to handle concept drift with varyingdegrees of success.

However, most approaches make the keyassumption that the labelled data will be available at nolabelling cost shortly after classification, an assumption whichis often violated. The high labelling cost in many domainsprovides a strong motivation to reduce the number of labelledinstances required to handle concept drift. Explicit detectionapproaches that do not require labelled instances to detectconcept drift show great …

[1] The Wilkes and Aurora basins are large, low-lying sub-glacial basins that may cause areas of weakness in the overlying East Antarctic ice sheet. Previous work based on ice-rafted debris (IRD) provenance analyses found evidence for massive iceberg discharges from these areas during the late Miocene and Pliocene. Here we characterize the sediments shed from the inferred areas of weakness along this margin (94°E to 165°E) by measuring40Ar/39Ar ages of 292 individual detrital hornblende grains from eight marine sediment core locations off East Antarctica and Nd isotopic compositions of the bulk fine fraction from the same sediments. Modeling Criminal Careers As Departures From A Unimodal Population Age-Crime Curve: The Case Of Marijuana Use, Donatello Telesca, Elena Erosheva, Derek Kreager, Ross Matsueda

COBRA Preprint Series

A major aim of longitudinal analyses of life course data is to describe the within- and between-individual variability in a behavioral outcome, such as crime. Statistical analyses of such data typically draw on mixture and mixed-effects growth models. In this work, we present a functional analytic point of view and develop an alternative method that models individual crime trajectories as departures from a population age-crime curve. Drawing on empirical and theoretical claims in criminology, we assume a unimodal population age-crime curve and allow individual expected crime trajectories to differ by their levels of offending and patterns of temporal misalignment. We …
