Development Of A Passive Sampler For Gaseous Mercury, Mae S. Gustin, Seth N. Lyman, P. Kilner, E. Prestbo
Development Of A Passive Sampler For Gaseous Mercury, Mae S. Gustin, Seth N. Lyman, P. Kilner, E. Prestbo
USU Uintah Basin Faculty Publications
Here we describe work toward development of the components of a cost effective passive sampling system for gaseous Hg that could be broadly deployed by nontechnical staff. The passive sampling system included an external shield to reduce turbulence and exposure to precipitation and dust, a diffusive housing that directly protects the collection surface during deployment and handling, and a collection surface. A protocol for cleaning and deploying the sampler and an analytical method were developed. Our final design consisted of a polycarbonate external shield enclosing a custom diffusive housing made from expanded PTFE tubing. Two collection surfaces were investigated, gold …

A Data-Driven Approach For Processing Heterogeneous Categorical Sensor Signals, Randy Paffenroth, Christopher Calderon, Austin Jones, Scott Lundberg
Randy C. Paffenroth
False alarms generated by sensors pose a substantial problem to a variety of fusion applications. We focus on situations where the frequency of a genuine alarm is "rare" but the false alarm rate is high. The goal is to mitigate the false alarms while retaining power to detect true events. We propose to utilize data streams contaminated by false alarms (generated in the field) to compute statistics on a single sensor's misclassification rate. The nominal misclassification rate of a deployed sensor is often suspect because it is unlikely that these rates were tuned to the specific environmental conditions in which …
Operation Comics: Making Math Fun, Bruce Kessler
Operation Comics: Making Math Fun, Bruce Kessler
Mathematics Faculty Publications
This talk gives a background on the Operation Comics series, which integrates mathematics into a comic book storyline, as an example of how creativity is not exclusive to the traditional arts, like music and dance, but is a vital part of math, science, and engineering.

Sources Of Gaseous Oxidized Mercury And Mercury Dry Deposition At Two Southeastern U.S. Sites, Peter S. Weiss-Penzias, Mae S. Gustin, Seth N. Lyman
Sources Of Gaseous Oxidized Mercury And Mercury Dry Deposition At Two Southeastern U.S. Sites, Peter S. Weiss-Penzias, Mae S. Gustin, Seth N. Lyman
USU Uintah Basin Faculty Publications
Wet deposition measurements have shown that relative to other parts of the US, the southeastern region has the highest mercury (Hg) inputs. The source of this Hg has been investigated by multiple researchers and is suggested to be derived from local, regional and global sources. Here we focus on trying to understand potential sources of Hg to this area during periods dominated by dry gaseous oxidized mercury (GOM) deposition. Dry deposition of GOM to a surrogate surface was measured in conjunction with speciated atmospheric Hg, and ancillary parameters from September 2007 through September 2008 at two sites located within 25 …

The deployment of thousands of wind energy facilities required to meet various renewable energy targets will bring changes to the nation’s landscapes, communities, and economies.
The intent of this integrated assessment project is to comprehensively analyze the benefits and challenges to wind energy development in one particular region of coastal West Michigan, including Oceana, Muskegon, Ottawa and Allegan counties.
By combining science and public participation, our integrated assessment will empower citizens and local governments to make informed decisions about wind energy facilities in their communities. Our project will enhance local capacity to mitigate conflicts surrounding wind energy development, and will …
