Forecasting Consumer Adoption Of Technological Innovation: Choosing The Appropriate Diffusion Models For New Products And Services Before Launch, Roger Calantone, Lance Gentry

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

There are many good articles on various forecasting models. There is consensus that no single diffusion model is best for every situation. Experts in the field have asked for studies to provide empirical-based guidelines for recommending when various models should be used. This research investigates multiple diffusion models and provides recommendations for which diffusion models are appropriate for radical and really new products and services before the launch of the innovation.

Greedy Population Sizing For Evolutionary Algorithms, Ekaterina Smorodkina, Daniel R. Tauritz Jan 2007

Greedy Population Sizing For Evolutionary Algorithms, Ekaterina Smorodkina, Daniel R. Tauritz

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The number of parameters that need to be man ually tuned to achieve good performance of Evolutionary Algorithms and the dependency of the parameters on each other make this potentially robust and efficient computational method very time consuming and difficult to use. This paper introduces a Greedy Population Sizing method for Evolutionary Algo rithms (GPS-EA), an automated population size tuning method that does not require any population size related parameters to be specified or manually tuned a priori. Theoretical analysis of the number of function evaluations needed by the GPS EA to produce good solutions is provided. We also perform …

Crosslinking 3d Assemblies Of Silica Nanoparticles (Aerogels) By Surface-Initiated Free Radical Polymerization Of Styrene And Methylmethacrylate, Nicholas Leventis, Chariklia Sotiriou-Leventis, Sudhir Mulik Jan 2007

Crosslinking 3d Assemblies Of Silica Nanoparticles (Aerogels) By Surface-Initiated Free Radical Polymerization Of Styrene And Methylmethacrylate, Nicholas Leventis, Chariklia Sotiriou-Leventis, Sudhir Mulik

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Quasi-stable, ultra-low density, three-dimensional assemblies of nanoparticles are referred to as aerogels. Aerogels are open-cell foams derived from supercritical fluid (SCF) drying of wet gels. Their large internal void space is responsible for low dielectric constants, low thermal conductivities and high acoustic impedance. At the same time though those materials are fragile and impractical for high load applications. The fragility problem has been addressed by casting a thin conformal polymer coating over the entire internal porous surface of the nanostructure.1 That process is referred to as crosslinking. The coating connects chemically skeletal nanoparticles and renders interparticle necks wider. Thus, the …

A Mössbauer Spectral Study Of The Gdco₄₋ₓfeₓb Compounds, Fernande Grandjean, Raphäel P. Hermann, Eustachy S. Popiel, Gary J. Long

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The iron-57 Mössbauer spectra of the GdCo4-xFexB compounds, where x is 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 1, 2, 2.5, and 2.6, have been measured at room temperature and reveal relatively small iron hyperfine fields of approximately 12-18 T, relatively large quadrupole interactions of approximately +0.9 and -1 mm/s, and three very different types of spectra for x=0.10 and 0.15, x=0.25, 1, and 2, and x=2.5 and 2.6. The differences result from both the different easy magnetization directions in these compounds and the different cobalt and/or iron occupancies of the crystallographic 2c and 6i sites. The spectra have …

In recent years, there has been considerable interest in inorganic/organic hybrid materials that combine the desirable properties of both classes. These composite materials may find significant application in a variety of applications such as sensors, memory and energy conversion, to name just a few. In our laboratories, we have recently made a series of studies on the production of polymer nanofibers and their composites with nanometals. Much of this work has focused on the production of polyaniline (PANI) nanofibers that have been made from one-pot syntheses in aqueous solutions where the polymerization was influenced by -radiation1 or UV-radiation.2 in the …

Sediment Flux And Fate In The Mississippi River Diversion At West Bay: Observation Study, Thomas Mitchell Andrus

LSU Master's Theses

Land-building sediment diversions, such as the Mississippi River Diversion at West Bay, can be used as important building blocks in the conservation and restoration of Mississippi Delta wetlands. Sediment deposition and retention patterns were studied in the West Bay diversion outfall area through analyses of sediment cores, hydrodynamics, and bathymetry. Cores and x-ray samples were collected at twenty stations in March 2004, August 2004, November 2005, and April 2006. Cores were analyzed for grain-size distributions and 7Be activities, in order to examine patterns of recent sediment deposition. In comparing ratios of total 7Be inventory to atmospheric 7Be …

An Introduction To Virtual Spatial Graph Theory, Thomas Fleming, Blake Mellor

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

Two natural generalizations of knot theory are the study of spatial graphs and virtual knots. Our goal is to unify these two approaches into the study of virtual spatial graphs. We state the definitions, provide some examples, and survey the known results. We hope that this paper will help lead to rapid development of the area.

Boundary Slopes Of 2-Bridge Links Determine The Crossing Number, Jim Hoste, Patrick D. Shanahan Jan 2007

Boundary Slopes Of 2-Bridge Links Determine The Crossing Number, Jim Hoste, Patrick D. Shanahan

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

A diagonal surface in a link exterior M is a properly embedded, incompressible, boundary incompressible surface which furthermore has the same number of boundary components and the same slope on each component of the boundary of M. We derive a formula for the boundary slope of a diagonal surface in the exterior of a 2-bridge link which is analogous to the formula for the boundary slope of a 2-bridge knot found by Hatcher and Thurston. Using this formula we show that the diameter of a 2-bridge link, that is, the difference between the smallest and largest finite slopes of …

Dissociation Of Eif1 From The 40s Ribosomal Subunit Is A Key Step In Start Codon Selection In Vivo, Sarah F. Mitchell Jan 2007

Dissociation Of Eif1 From The 40s Ribosomal Subunit Is A Key Step In Start Codon Selection In Vivo, Sarah F. Mitchell

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Works

Selection of the AUG start codon is a key step in translation initiation requiring hydrolysis of GTP in the eIF2·GTP·Met-tRNA iMet ternary complex (TC) and subsequent Pi release from eIF2·GDP·Pi. It is thought that eIF1 prevents recognition of non-AUGs by promoting scanning and blocking P i release at non-AUG codons. We show that Sui? mutations in Saccharomyces cerevisiae eIF1, which increase initiation at UUG codons, reduce interaction of eIF1 with 40S subunits in vitro and in vivo, and both defects are diminished in cells by overexpressing the mutant proteins. Remarkably, Sui? mutation ISQLG93-97ASQAA (abbreviated 93-97) accelerates eIF1 dissociation and Pi …

Exotic Statistics For Strings In 4d Bf Theory, John C. Baez, Derek K. Wise, Alissa S. Crans

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

After a review of exotic statistics for point particles in 3d BF theory, and especially 3d quantum gravity, we show that string-like defects in 4d BF theory obey exotic statistics governed by the 'loop braid group'. This group has a set of generators that switch two strings just as one would normally switch point particles, but also a set of generators that switch two strings by passing one through the other. The first set generates a copy of the symmetric group, while the second generates a copy of the braid group. Thanks to recent work of Xiao-Song Lin, we can …

Intrinsic Linking And Knotting In Virtual Spatial Graphs, Thomas Fleming, Blake Mellor Jan 2007

Intrinsic Linking And Knotting In Virtual Spatial Graphs, Thomas Fleming, Blake Mellor

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We introduce a notion of intrinsic linking and knotting for virtual spatial graphs. Our theory gives two filtrations of the set of all graphs, allowing us to measure, in a sense, how intrinsically linked or knotted a graph is; we show that these filtrations are descending and nonterminating. We also provide several examples of intrinsically virtually linked and knotted graphs. As a byproduct, we introduce the virtual unknotting number of a knot, and show that any knot with nontrivial Jones polynomial has virtual unknotting number at least 2.

Cohomology Of The Adjoint Of Hopf Algebras, J. Scott Carter, Alissa S. Crans, Mohamed Elhamdadi, Masahico Saito

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

A cohomology theory of the adjoint of Hopf algebras, via deformations, is presented by means of diagrammatic techniques. Explicit calculations are provided in the cases of group algebras, function algebras on groups, and the bosonization of the super line. As applications, solutions to the YBE are given and quandle cocycles are constructed from groupoid cocycles.

Derived Categories And The Analytic Approach To General Reciprocity Laws. Part Ii, Michael Berg Jan 2007

Derived Categories And The Analytic Approach To General Reciprocity Laws. Part Ii, Michael Berg

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

Building on the topological foundations constructed in Part I, we now go on to address the homological algebra preparatory to the projected final arithmetical phase of our attack on the analytic proof of general reciprocity for a number field. In the present work, we develop two algebraic frameworks corresponding to two interpretations of Kubota's n-Hilbert reciprocity formalism, presented in a quasi-dualized topological form in Part I, delineating two sheaf-theoretic routes toward resolving the aforementioned (open) problem. The first approach centers on factoring sheaf morphisms eventually to yield a splitting homomorphism for Kubota's n-fold cover of the adelized special linear group …

Connection Between Spring Conditions And Peak Summer Monsoon Rainfall In South America: Role Of Soil Moisture, Surface Temperature, And Topography In Eastern Brazil, Alice M. Grimm, Jeremy S. Pal, Filippo Giorgi Jan 2007

Connection Between Spring Conditions And Peak Summer Monsoon Rainfall In South America: Role Of Soil Moisture, Surface Temperature, And Topography In Eastern Brazil, Alice M. Grimm, Jeremy S. Pal, Filippo Giorgi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Works

A link between peak summer monsoon rainfall in central-east Brazil, composing part of the South American monsoon core region, and antecedent conditions in spring is disclosed. Rainfall in this region during part of spring holds a significant inverse correlation with rainfall in peak summer, especially during ENSO years. A surface–atmosphere feedback hypothesis is proposed to explain this relationship: low spring precipitation leads to low spring soil moisture and high late spring surface temperature; this induces a topographically enhanced low-level anomalous convergence and cyclonic circulation over southeast Brazil that enhances the moisture flux from northern and central South America into central-east …

Solution Conformations Of Three Small Cluster Oligosaccharide Mimetics (Scom) From D-Glucosamine, D-Altrosamine, And (-)-Quinic Acid, Q. L. Nguyen, L. Olmstead, S. Bains, Andreas H. Franz Jan 2007

Solution Conformations Of Three Small Cluster Oligosaccharide Mimetics (Scom) From D-Glucosamine, D-Altrosamine, And (-)-Quinic Acid, Q. L. Nguyen, L. Olmstead, S. Bains, Andreas H. Franz

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

Three small cluster oligosaccharide mimetics were synthesized, and their CDCl3 solution conformations were determined with NMR experiments. In this paper, we confirmed conformational similarities in rings A and B in all three compounds, and we provide the overall solution geometries. In all cases, an unusual cyclohexane twist-boat conformation with longrange 4 J-(W)-coupling was observed. The origin of the bias towards the twist-boat was attributed primarily to the fused ring system between the cyclohexane ring and the dioxacyclopentane (acetal) including hydrogen bonding. Temperature-annealed molecular dynamics simulations complemented the NMR experiments and supported the overall assignment.

Supporting Data-Intensive Wireless Sensor Applications Using Smart Data Fragmentation And Buffer Management, Mbonisi Masilela Jan 2007

Supporting Data-Intensive Wireless Sensor Applications Using Smart Data Fragmentation And Buffer Management, Mbonisi Masilela

Theses and Dissertations

Recent advances in low power device technology have led to the development of smaller powerful sensors geared for use in Wireless Sensor Networks. Some of these sensors are capable of producing large data packets in a single reading. This becomes a challenging problem given the constraints imposed by current MAC and Transport Layer implementations since a single data packet can exceed the MTU of the protocol stack. Little has been done in the way of addressing this issue in Wireless Sensor Networks. This paper proposes a novel solution to this issue. Proposed is a Lightweight Data Transportation Protocol that uses …

On Optimal Survivability Design In Wdm Optical Networks Under Scheduled Traffic Models, Tianjian Li

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical networks are widely viewed as the most appropriate choice for future Internet backbone with the potential to fulfill the ever-growing demands for bandwidth. WDM divides the enormous bandwidth of an optical fiber into many non-overlapping wavelength channels, each of which may operate at the rate of 10 Gigabit per second or higher. A failure in a network such as a cable cut may result in a tremendous loss of data. Therefore, survivability is a very important issue in WDM optical networks. The objective of this dissertation is to address the survivability provisioning problem in WDM …

For years software engineering researchers have been trying to come up with a software synthesis system that can transform a formal specification model into a design model from which executable code can be generated. AFIT Wide Spectrum Object Modeling Environment (AWSOME) is one such formal based software synthesis system. In this system formal specifications written in AWL are parsed into an AST (Abstract Syntax Tree). The intent of this thesis is to demonstrate the transformation of the postconditions of a method into target language statements. The methods in the classes are specified using pre-conditions and post-conditions. Transforms are developed to …

Huge amount of data is available in our society and the need for turning such data into useful information and knowledge is urgent. Data mining is an important field addressing that need and significant progress has been achieved in the last decade. In several important application areas, data arises in the format of Multiple Time Series Object (MTSO) data, where each data object is an array of time series over a large set of features and each has an associated class or state. Very little research has been conducted towards this kind of data. Examples include computational toxicology, where each …

The proliferation of XML as a family of related standards including a markup language (XML), formatting semantics (XSL style sheets), a linking syntax (XLINK), and appropriate data schema standards have emerged as a de facto standard for encoding and sharing data between various applications. XML is designed to be simple, easily parsed and self-describing. XML is based on and support the idea of separation of concerns: information content is separated from information rendering, and relationships between data elements are provided via simple nesting and references. As the XML content grows, the ability to handle schemaless XML documents becomes more critical …

The purpose of the this paper is to study the parabolic system u_t^{i} - D_α(a_ij^{αβ}D_βu^j) = -div f^i in the generalized Morrey Space L_φ^{2,λ} . We would like to understand the regularity of the solutions of this system. It will be shown that 1: if a_ij^{αβ} in C(Q_T) then Du in L_φ^{2,λ}, and 2: if a_ij^{αβ} in VMO(Q_T) then Du in L_φ^{2,λ}. Moreover we will be able to obtain estimates on the gradient of the solutions to the system, which will tell us about the regularity of the solutions.

ZnO micro-structures and nano-structures have been grown on two types of substrate by reacting condensed Zn vapor with oxygen. The source material was either pure zinc powder or zinc acetate which was either evaporated or decomposed. This was done in the temperature range 500 C to 650 C, in a flowing Ar plus oxygen ambient at atmospheric pressure. Variations in the carrier gas composition, gas flow rate and the position of the substrate in the furnace were found to control the formation and the morphology of the nanostructures. Scanning electron microscopy images of samples grown from a Zn powder source …

This dissertation focuses on the evolution of Continuous Time Recurrent Neural Networks (CTRNNs) as controllers for control systems. Existing research suggests that the process of neutral drift can greatly benefit evolution for problems whose fitness landscapes contain large-scale neutral networks. CTRNNs are known to be highly degenerate, providing a possible source of large-scale landscape neutrality, and existing research suggests that neutral drift benefits the evolution of simple CTRNNs. However, there has been no in-depth examination of the effects of neutral drift on complex CTRNN controllers, especially in the presence of noisy fitness evaluation. To address this problem, this dissertation presents …
