Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 8 - The Nutritional Management Of Barramundi, Brett Glencross Oct 2004

Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 8 - The Nutritional Management Of Barramundi, Brett Glencross

Fisheries Research Contract Reports

Barramundi nutrition research has been undertaken since 1988. Since that time the requirements for most nutrients, energy demand, ingredient utilisation and the effects of nutrition on flesh quality aspects have all been examined to varying extents.

Optimal protein content of diets has been shown to vary with diet energy density and also the size of fish which are being fed. Most studies have suggested a protein requirement from 45% to 55%. For small fish a protein to energy ratio of 25 to 30 g/MJ is suggested. Limited work has been done on fish larger than 500 g. The 10 essential …

The Correlation Of Lithium And Beryllium In F And G Cluster Dwarf Stars, Ann Merchant Boesgaard, Eric Armengaud, Constantine P. Deliyannis, Alex Stephens, Jeremy R. King Oct 2004

The Correlation Of Lithium And Beryllium In F And G Cluster Dwarf Stars, Ann Merchant Boesgaard, Eric Armengaud, Constantine P. Deliyannis, Alex Stephens, Jeremy R. King

Publications

Although Li has been extensively observed in main-sequence field and cluster stars, there are relatively fewer observations of Be. We have obtained Keck HIRES spectra of 36 late F and early G dwarfs in order to study the Li-Be correlation we found previously in the temperature regime of 5900–6650 K. The sample size for this temperature range with detectable and (usually) depleted Li and Be is now 88, including Li and Be abundances in both cluster and field stars. Therefore we can now investigate the influence of other parameters such as age, temperature, and metallicity on the correlation. The Be …

A Major Regional Air Pollution Event In The Northeastern United States Caused By Extensive Forest Fires In Quebec, Canada, Linsey J. Debell, Jack E. Dibb, R. Talbot, J W. Munger, E V. Fischer, Steve Frolking

Earth Sciences

During early July 2002, wildfires burned ∼1 × 106 ha of forest in Quebec, Canada. The resultant smoke plume was seen in satellite images blanketing the U.S. east coast. Concurrently, extremely high CO mixing ratios were observed at the Atmospheric Investigation, Regional Modeling, Analysis and Prediction (AIRMAP) network sites in New Hampshire and at the Harvard Forest Environmental Measurement Site (HFEMS) in Massachusetts. The CO enhancements were on the order of 525–1025 ppbv above low mixing ratio conditions on surrounding days. A biomass burning source for the event was confirmed by concomitant enhancements in aerosol K+, NH …

Detection Of Clostridium Botulinum Type C Cells In The Gastrointestinal Tracts Of Mozambique Tilapia (Oreochromis Mossambicus) By Polymerase Chain Reaction, P. Nol, J.L. Williamson, T.E. Rocke, T.M. Yuill

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We established a method of directly detecting Clostridium botulinum type C cells, while minimizing spore detection, in the intestinal contents of Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus). This technique involved extraction of predominantly cellular DNA from tilapia intestinal tracts and used a polymerase chain reaction assay to detect presence of type C1 toxin gene. We consistently detected C. botulinum type C cells in tilapia gastrointestinal contents at a level of 7.53104 cells per 0.25 g material or 1.93103 cells. This technique is useful for determining prevalence of the potentially active organisms within a given population of fish …

Random Walks On The Torus With Several Generators, Timothy Prescott '02, Francis E. Su Oct 2004

Random Walks On The Torus With Several Generators, Timothy Prescott '02, Francis E. Su

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Given n vectors {i} ∈ [0, 1)d, consider a random walk on the d-dimensional torus d = ℝd/ℤd generated by these vectors by successive addition and subtraction. For certain sets of vectors, this walk converges to Haar (uniform) measure on the torus. We show that the discrepancy distance D(Q*k) between the kth step distribution of the walk and Haar measure is bounded below by D(Q*k) ≥ C1k−n/2, where C1 = C(n, d) is …

Computational Approaches To The Design And Analysis Of Stability Of Polypeptide Multilayer Thin Films, Bin Zheng Oct 2004

Computational Approaches To The Design And Analysis Of Stability Of Polypeptide Multilayer Thin Films, Bin Zheng

Doctoral Dissertations

The focus of this research is the development of computational approaches to understanding the physical basis of layer-by-layer assembly (LBL), a key methodology of nanomanufacturing. The results provided detailed information on structure which cannot be obtained directly by experiments.

The model systems chosen for study are polypeptide chains. Reasons for this are that polypeptides are no less polyelectrolytes than the more usual polyions, and one can control the primary structure of a polypeptide on a residue-by-residue basis using modern synthetic methods. Moreover, as peptides constitute one of the four major classes of biological macromolecules, research in this direction is expected …

Sense -Based Text Classification By Semantic Hierarchy Representation, Xiaogang Peng Oct 2004

Sense -Based Text Classification By Semantic Hierarchy Representation, Xiaogang Peng

Doctoral Dissertations

Automatic classification of web pages is an effective way to facilitate the process of retrieving information from the Internet. Currently, two major classification methods are used in this area: keyword-based classification and sense-based classification. For keyword-based classification, keywords often have different semantic meanings, and the correct keyword matching is largely based on using exactly the same keywords. Thus, the classification results of keyword-based classification are not always satisfying. Many sense-based classification algorithms and systems have been presented, but they pay little attention to the relationship between senses. In this dissertation, we present a method to automatically classify documents based on …

Lyn English (Ed). Mathematical and Analogical Reasoning of Young Learners. New Jersey: Lawrence Erlbaum & Associates, 2004. ISBN 0-8058-4945-9.

In the last decade and a half mathematics education literature has shown a rapid increase in books and articles that focus on the social and cultural issues related to mathematics learning and teaching. Although the social and cultural dimensions are important and relevant, the cognitive dimension of mathematical learning is equally important and received less attention. Mathematical and Analogical Reasoning of Young Learners takes us back to the very roots of learning and investigates foundational questions on the nature of …

Mercer Kernels For Object Recognition With Local Features, Siwei Lyu Oct 2004

Mercer Kernels For Object Recognition With Local Features, Siwei Lyu

Computer Science Technical Reports

In this paper, we propose a new class of kernels for object recognition based on local image feature representations. Formal proofs are given to show that these kernels satisfy the Mercer condition and reflect similarities between sets of local features. In addition, multiple types of local features and semilocal constraints are incorporated to reduce mismatches between local features, thus further improve the classification performance. Experimental results of SVM classifiers coupled with the proposed kernels are reported on ecognition tasks with the standard COIL-100 database and compared with existing methods. The proposed kernels achieved satisfactory performance and were robust to changes …

Efficient Wait-Free Implementation Of Multiword Ll/Sc Variables, Prasad Jayanti, Srdjan Petrovic Oct 2004

Efficient Wait-Free Implementation Of Multiword Ll/Sc Variables, Prasad Jayanti, Srdjan Petrovic

Computer Science Technical Reports

Since the design of lock-free data structures often poses a formidable intellectual challenge, researchers are constantly in search of abstractions and primitives that simplify this design. The multiword LL/SC object is such a primitive: many existing algorithms are based on this primitive, including the nonblocking and wait-free universal constructions of Anderson and Moir (1995), the closed objects construction of Chandra et al.(1998) and the snapshot algorithms of Jayanti (2002, 2004). In this paper, we consider the problem of implementing a W-word LL/SC object shared by N processes. The previous best algorithm, due to Anderson and Moir (1995), is time optimal …

Automatic Image Orientation Determination With Natural Image Statistics, Siwei Lyu Oct 2004

Automatic Image Orientation Determination With Natural Image Statistics, Siwei Lyu

Computer Science Technical Reports

In this paper, we propose a new method for automatically determining image orientations. This method is based on a set of natural image statistics collected from a multi-scale multi-orientation image decomposition (e.g., wavelets). From these statistics, a two-stage hierarchal classification with multiple binary SVM classifiers is employed to de- termine image orientation. The proposed method is evaluated and compared to existing methods with experiments performed on 18040 natural images, where it showed promising performance.

Dissolution, Reactor, And Environmental Behavior Of Zro2-Mgo Inert Fuel Matrix: Neutronic Evaluation Of Zro2-Mgo Inert Fuels, E. Fridman, A. Galperin, E. Shwageraus

Fuels Campaign (TRP)

Second task of the BGU part of “Dissolution, Reactor, and Environmental Behavior of ZrO2-MgO Inert Fuel Matrix” project aims at evaluation of the fertile free fuel matrix composition effect on the fuel reactivity and corresponding reactivity limited burnup. Fertile free fuel with different MgO to ZrO2 ratio in the matrix will require different PuO2 loading in order to assure certain fuel cycle length. This is due to the fact that absorption cross section of Zr is slightly higher than that of Mg, although absorption in both of these elements is small compared to Pu. Therefore, the …

Technical Note: Comparative Static Analysis Of Information Value In A Canonical Decision Problem, Jeffrey Keisler Oct 2004

Technical Note: Comparative Static Analysis Of Information Value In A Canonical Decision Problem, Jeffrey Keisler

Management Science and Information Systems Faculty Publication Series

To gain insight into the behavior of the value of information, this paper identifies specific rules for a canonical decision problem: the two-act linear loss decision with normal prior probability distributions. Conditions are derived for which the expected value of perfect information increases when mean and standard deviation are both linear functions of an exogenous variable. A variety of richer decision problems can be adapted to the problem, so that the general results obtained here can be immediately applied to understand drivers of information value.

Generating Sequences Of Clique-Symmetric Graphs Via Eulerian Digraphs, John P. Mcsorley, Thomas D. Porter

Articles and Preprints

Let {Gp1,Gp2, . . .} be an infinite sequence of graphs with Gpn having pn vertices. This sequence is called Kp-removable if Gp1 ≅ Kp, and Gpn − S ≅ Gp(n−1) for every n ≥ 2 and every vertex subset S of Gpn that induces a Kp. Each graph in such a sequence has a high degree of symmetry: every way of removing the vertices of any fixed number of disjoint Kp’s yields the same …

Benthic Biological Monitoring Program Of The Elizabeth River Watershed (2003), Daniel M. Dauer

Elizabeth River Reports

Executive Summary

Macrobenthic communities of the Elizabeth River watershed have been quantitatively sampled since summer 1999. This report presents the data from the fifth year of sampling in 2003. The three objectives of the Benthic Biological Monitoring Program of the Elizabeth River watershed are: (1) To characterize the health of the tidal waters of the Elizabeth River watershed as indicated by the structure of the benthic communities. ( 2) To conduct trend analyses on long-term data at 14 fixed-point stations to relate temporal trends in the benthic communities to changes in water and/or sediment quality. Trend analyses will be updated …

Chaos-Induced Escape Over A Potential Barrier, L. Y. Chew, Hian Ann, Christopher Ting, C. H. Lai Oct 2004

Chaos-Induced Escape Over A Potential Barrier, L. Y. Chew, Hian Ann, Christopher Ting, C. H. Lai

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We investigate the statistical parity of a class of chaos-generated noises on the escape of strongly damped particles out of a potential well. We show that statistical asymmetry in the chaotic fluctuations can lead to a skewed Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution in the well. Depending on the direction of skew, the Kramers escape rate is enhanced or suppressed accordingly. Based on the Perron–Frobenious equation, we determine an analytical expression for the escape rate’s prefactor that accounts for this effect. Furthermore, our perturbative analysis proves that in the zeroth-order limit, the rate of particle escape converges to the Kramers rate.

Inclusive Double-Pomeron Exchange At The Fermilab Tevatron P̅P Collider, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration Oct 2004

Inclusive Double-Pomeron Exchange At The Fermilab Tevatron P̅P Collider, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report results from a study of events with a double-Pomeron exchange topology produced in p̅p collisions at √s =1800 GeV. The events are characterized by a leading antiproton and a large rapidity gap on the outgoing proton side. We find that the differential production cross section agrees in shape with predictions based on Regge theory and factorization, and that the ratio of double-Pomeron exchange to single diffractive production rates is relatively unsuppressed as compared to the θ(10) suppression factor previously measured in single diffractive production.
