Mechanical And Light Transmittance Properties Of Locust Bean Gum Based Edible Films, Meltem Aydinli, Mehmet Tutaş, Ö. Altan Bozdemi̇r

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The behavior of locust bean gum (LBG) under heat was investigated by thermogravimetric (TG), differential thermogravimetric (DTG) and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) methods. It was observed from the TG, DTG and DSC curves that LBG does not melt and is stable up to 300 °C, although exothermic degradation occurs at higher temperatures. The effect of the amount and molecular weight of polyethylene glycol (PEG) on the light transmittance and mechanical properties of these edible films was also examined. The 1H-pyrazole-3-carboxylic acid 2, obtained from the furandione 1 and 2-hydrazinopyridine, was decarboxylated to give 4-benzoyl-5-phenyl-1-pyridin-2-yl-pyrazole derivative 3. Some ester 4 derivatives of 2 were prepared by the Fischer esterification reactions of 2 with various alcohols. Cyclocondensation reactions of 2 with phenyl hydrazine or hydrazine hydrate led to the formation of derivatives of pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyridazine 5 derivatives.

Crosslinked copolymers of various compositions of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (VP) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) were prepared chemically in the presence of a crosslinking agent. The swelling mechanism was non-Fickian with about 86% conversion of feed composition to crosslinked copolymer. The reactivity ratios r_1 = 0.045 and r_2 = 3.07 for VP and HEMA indicate that HEMA is more reactive than VP in the reaction. Hydrophilicity, hydrophobicity and monomer composition in the copolymer controlled the drug release from the hydrogels.

Defect Structure And Properties Of Sr-Doped La Cr O_{3-\Delta}, Mahmoud Omari, Ilhem Chadli, Salah Belaidi

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A defect chemical model for the behavior of acceptor-doped LaCrO_3 as a function of oxygen pressure is proposed. This is considered within the regime that corresponds to oxygen deficit oxygen. The mathematical approach allows us to calculate the oxygen partial pressure dependant properties of La_{1-x} Sr_x Cr O_{3-\delta} in the range 0.10 \le x \le 0.30. The results show that the conductivity was independent of pO_2 and was proportional to the dopant concentration at high pO_2. Therefore, under reducing conditions, the conductivity decreased exponentially with decreasing pO_2 and asymptotically approached a pO_2^{1/4} relationship. Poly (methyl methacrylate) -- PMMA -- and poly (methacryloyl chloride) -- PMACl -- were synthesized by free radical solution polymerization. The thermal stabilities of these polymers were determined with the help of thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis. The structural changes in these materials at different temperatures (90, 140, 220 and 410 °C) were studied by X-ray diffraction. These studies indicate that PMACl is less amorphous than PMMA due to the presence of bulky chloride groups

The lignan content of Linum olympicum Boiss. was investigated by HPLC and GC-MS in comparison with standards, and 2 phenylpropanoid glycosides, syringin (1) and coniferin (2), were isolated from the aerial parts. Identification of the 2 compounds was achieved by comparison with standards using TLC and HPLC and the structures of the isolated compounds were established by UV and ^1H-NMR analysis.

A lignan glycoside, syringaresinol-4',4''-O-di-\beta -D-glucopyranoside (1) (=liriodendrin), 4 phenylethanoid glycosides, acteoside (2), isoacteoside (3), forsythoside B (4) and leucosceptoside B (5), a caffeic acid ester, chlorogenic acid (6) and 2 iridoid glucosides, lamiide (7) and auroside (8), were isolated from the methanolic extracts of the aerial parts of Phlomis kotschyana along with an acetophenone glycoside, 4-hydroxyacetophenone 4-O-[6'-O-\beta -D-apiofuranosyl]-\beta -D-glucopyranoside (9). The structures of the isolated compounds were identified on the basis of spectroscopic (UV, IR, 1D- and 2D-NMR, and FAB-MS) methods.

The FTIR spectra of 4-aminoquinaldine and 5-aminoquinoline were recorded in solid phase on a Bruker IFS 66V spectrometer in the region 4000--400 cm^{-1}. The FT-Raman spectra of these compounds were also recorded in the same instrument with a FRA 106 Raman module. The molecules under investigation are considered to have a C_{S} point group by assuming the --NH_{2} and --CH_{3} groups as point masses. All the vibrations are both IR and Raman active. A biporous monolithic silica gel column possessing both micrometer sized through-pores and nanometer sized mesopores located in the silica skeletons was prepared and the high concentration porogen (e.g., 2 mol/L ammonium hydroxide solution) was use for increasing mesopore size in this work. The mechanism for the preparation of the monolithic column was investigated in detail. Moreover, the effect of the polyethylene glycol concentration in the starting solution was studied and it was found that a lower concentration range was also suitable for forming the interconnected porous structure for the monolithic silica gel column. Polymerization of methyl methacrylate was conducted using a n-butyl lithium/pyridazine system as initiator in tetrahydrofuran (THF) and toluene. Special attention was focused on using some lithium polyether alkoxides as polymerization is promoted at ambient temperatures. The positive effects of these \mu /\sigma -type ligands such as lithium 2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxide and lithium 2-(methoxy)ethoxide on controlling the living character, molecular weight, stereoregularity and yield of the produced polymers were all demonstrated. It was found that initiator/lithium-2-(methoxy)ethoxide in a 1/10 ratio gives the most controlled polymerization. The synthesis of a new symmetric disazo direct dye containing the non--carcinogenic 4,4'-diaminobenzanilide as the middle component and salicylic acid as the coupling component is presented. The synthesized dye is an analog of the benzidine based dye C. I. Direct Yellow 1 (C. I. 22,250) and was analyzed by thin layer chromatography (TLC), electronic spectra (VIS) and mass spectroscopy (FAB-MS). Poly(dimethylsiloxane-b-styrene) (PDMS-b-PSt) and poly(dimethylsiloxane-b-methyl methacrylate) (PDMS-b-PMMA) block copolymers containing siloxane segments were studied by the radical polymerizations of vinyl monomers such as styrene (St) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) using polydimethylsiloxane based macroazoinitiator (PDM-MAI) in solution. PDM-MAI was synthesized by reacting hydroxy-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and 4,4'-azobis (4-cyanopentanoyl chloride) (ACPC) having a thermodegradable azo-linkage. 4-Ethoxycarbonyl-5-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-2,3-furandione 1 was reacted with o-phenylenediamine, substituted ureas and methylcarbamate or acetamide to give quinoxaline 2, pyrimidine 3 and benzoylmalonic acid 4 derivatives, respectively. Benzoylmalonic acid derivative 4a was converted into a new oxozinedione derivative, 5, by refluxing its solution in xylene containing a catalytic amount of p-toluene sulfonic acid. In addition, triphenylpyrazole carboxylic acid derivative 6 was obtained from the reaction of 4a with diphenylhydrazine.

A series of 4-(1-naphthylidenamino)-1,2,4-triazol-5-one derivatives (3a-e) were synthesized by condensation of corresponding 3-alkyl-4-amino-4,5-dihydro-1H-1,2,4-triazol-5-ones with 1-naphthaldehyde. Acetylation and alkylation of these compounds gave 4a-e and 5a-e, respectively. Sodium borohydride reduction of 1-naphthylidenamino derivatives afforded naphthylmethylamino derivatives, which were subsequently acetylated. Depending on the duration of the acetylation, mono or bis acetamide derivatives were obtained. The in vitro antitumor activities of some selected compounds were screened and compounds 3e, 5c, 6e and 9c} were found to be active.

New adsorbents were synthesized by the sol-gel process from the product of a hydrolysis reaction and its coated form of titanium(IV)-n-propoxide for removing some heavy metal ions from aqueous solution. Titanium(IV)-n-propoxide was uncatalyst hydrolyzed with different amounts of water at room temperature and was found to react in a 1:1.6 ratio (mole of Ti:mole of H_{2}O). It was found that the condensation following the hydrolysis reaction was alcohol condensation. The hydrolysis-condensation product was characterized in detail by GC, Karl-Fischer coulometric titrator, NIR-spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, TG-DTA and elemental analysis. The effect of radiation on the persistent length of a chain in a water solution of polymer is considered in the work. This effect is suggested to be related to the breaking of the hydrogen bonds in hydrate layers around the chain. The kinetic equation of the breakage of the hydrogen bonds is defined and the stationary solution is found with the help of the equation. The accumulation of ^{90}Sr in decayed or exfoliated human teeth was investigated by ultra low level beta counting. Fuming nitric acid and the necessary carriers and reagents were used for dissolving the samples, and the separation and purification of ^{90}Sr. The Ca contents of samples were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry with Zeeman-effect background correction. A mixture of K and La used as a matrix modifier was found to be preferable for the determination of Ca in samples. The reaction of 2-[(2,3-dimethylphenyl)amino]benzoic acid (HL) with tri- and diorganotin(IV) chlorides yielded complexes of the type R_{3}SnL and R_{2}SnL_{2} (R = n-C_{4}H_{9}, C_{6}H_{5}, C_{6}H_{5}CH_{2}, n-C_{8}H_{17}). The compounds R_{2}SnClL were obtained by a redistribution reaction between R_{2}SnL_{2} and R_{2}SnCl_{2}. All the compounds were characterized by CHN analysis, infrared, multinuclear NMR, mass and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The possible mode of carboxylate group bonding in solid as well as in solution is proposed on the basis of infrared, Mössbauer and NMR (^{1}H, ^{13}C, ^{119}Sn) spectroscopy.

Two different mononucleating ligands incorporating N_{4} and N_{2}S_{2} donor units, 2-(1,3-benzothiazole-2-yl-methyl)-1,3-benzothiazole (L^{1}) and N,N'-bis-(2-amino-phenyl)-malonamide (H_{2}L^{2}) were synthesized by a new method from malonyl dichloride as starting material, and their mononuclear copper(II) complexes were prepared and characterized by elemental analyses, ^{1}H- and ^{13}C-NMR, IR, magnetic moments and mass spectral studies. Elemental analyses, and stochiometric and spectroscopic data of the metal complexes indicate that the metal ions are coordinated to the nitrogen and sulfur atoms and the data support the proposed structure of L^{1}, H_{2}L^{2} and their mononuclear copper(II) complexes. Synthesis of new 1,2,4-tri and 1,3,4-thiadiazoles, bearing isomeric pyridyl and 1-naphthyl is reported using 1,4-disubstituted thiosemicarbazides in alkaline and acidic media, respectively. The methylthio and benzylthio derivatives of the synthesized triazoles are also reported. All of the synthesized compounds were characterized by their FT-IR, ^{1}H-NMR and mass spectral data. The antibacterial studies of some of the synthesized compounds against S. aureus} and E. coli} as MIC values are reported. None of them have important antibacterial activities.

From the roots of Verbascum lasianthum Boiss. ex Bentham 4 catalpol derivatives, 6-O-(\alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl)-catalpol (1), verbascoside A [= 6-O-(4''-O-trans-p-methoxycinnamoyl)-\alpha -L-rhamnopy- ranosylcatalpol] (2), pulverulentoside I [= 6-O-(3''-O-acetyl-2''-O-trans-p-methoxycinnamoyl)-\alpha -L-rham-nopyranosylcatalpol] (3), and buddlejoside A_{5} [= 6-O-(2''-O-acetyl-3''-O-trans-p-methoxycinnamoyl)-\alpha -L-rhamnopyranosylcatalpol] (4), as well as aucubin (5) and an aucubin derivative, unduloside III [= 6-O-(3''-O-trans-p-methoxycinnamoyl)- \alpha-L-rhamnopyranosylaucubin] (6), were isolated and characterized. The structure elucidation of the compounds was established on the basis of spectroscopic evidence. Buddlejoside A_{5} (4) was found for the first time in the genus Verbascum.

Ilwensisaponin C (= 3-O-{[\alpha-L-rhamnosyl-(1 \to 4)-(\beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 \to 3)]-\beta-D-glucopyranosyl]-(1 \to 2)-\beta-fucopyranosyl}-11-methoxy-olean-12-ene-3\beta, 23, 28-triol) (1), ilwensisaponin A (= mimengoside A = 3-O-{[\alpha-L-rhamnosyl-(1 \to 4)-(\beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 \to 3)]-\beta -D-glucopyranosyl]-(1 \to 2)-\beta-fucop- yranosyl}-13\beta, 28-epoxyolean-11-ene-3\beta, 23-diol) (2), ajugol (3), picroside IV (= 6^\prime-O-trans- p-hydroxycin- namoylcatalpol) (4), verbascoside {= acteoside, [\beta -(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-ethyl]-(3^{\prime-O-\alpha-L-rhamnopyra- nosyl)-(4^{\prime-O-caffeoyl)-\beta-D-glucopyranoside} (5) and 1-(\beta -D-glucopyranosyl)-8-hydroxy-3, 7-dimethyl-oct-2(E), 6(E)- dienoate (6) were isolated from the flowers of Verbascum pterocalycinum var. mutense Hub.-Mor. Eighteen new 3-[2-(2-/4-pyridyl)ethyl]benzoxazolinone (benzothiazolinone) derivatives were synthesized by reacting 2-/4-vinylpyridine and appropriate benzoxazolinones and benzothiazolinones. The analgesic activities of these compounds were investigated by modified Koster and hot-plate tests. Test results revealed that most of the compounds at 100 mg/kg dose levels have higher analgesic activities than acetylsalicylic acid. Compounds with bromo substituents on the phenyl ring in the 6-position of the main ring seemed to show less activity than those with fluorinated ones. From the petroleum ether and methanol extracts of the aerial parts of Linaria aucheri (Scrophulariaceae) 6 known compounds: \beta-amyrin (1), ergost-7-en-3\beta-ol (2), stigmasta-5,22- E-dien-3\beta -ol (3), stigmast-5-en, 24S-3\beta-ol (4), antirrinoside (5) and linariin (6), were isolated and identified. The structures of these compounds have been elucidated by spectroscopic methods (UV, IR, ^{1}H NMR, ^{13}C NMR, DEPT-135 and GC-MS).

Chloride 18 (47%) and alcohol 21 (44%) were isolated from the reaction of alcohol 20 with SOCl_2. Cyclopropylcarbinyl -- cyclopropylcarbinyl rearrangement leads to chloride 22, which hydrolyses on separation to give alcohol 21. Chloride 18 results from cyclopropyl -- allylcarbinyl rearrangement, followed by a 1,2 -- aryl shift (sequential rearrangement). Syntheses of compounds 23 and 24 support the structures. The behaviour of 20 differs from that of exo isomer 14, probably due to the nature of the intermediates in these reactions.

Furandione 1 was reacted with 2,4,6-trichlorophenylhydrazine to give the 1H-pyrazole-3-carboxylic acid 2 together with a new pyridazinone derivative 3. Then 2 was converted into the corresponding ester 5 or amide 6 derivatives, respectively, via reactions of its acid chloride 4 with various alcohols or N-nucleophiles. Nitrile derivative 7 was obtained by dehydration of 6a in a mixture of SOCl_2 and DMF. Condensation reactions of 2 with some hydrazines led to the formation of pyrazolo [3,4-d] pyridazinone 8 derivatives.

4,4'-Bis(chloroacetyl)diphenyl thioether (HL) was synthesized from chloroacetyl chloride and diphenyl thioether in the presence of AlCl_3 as catalyst in a Friedel-Crafts reaction. Subsequently, its keto oxime (H_2L) and glyoxime (H_4L) derivatives were also prepared. Then 3 new substituted 4,4'-thiobis(aminophen- ylglyoxime) (H_4L^{1 - 3}) were synthesized from 4,4'-thiobis(chlorophenylglyoxime) and the corresponding amines. The Ni(II), Cu(II) and Co(II) complexes of these ligands were prepared. The structures of these ligands and their complexes were identifed by FT-IR, ^1H NMR and ICP-AES spectral data, elemental analyses and magnetic measurements.

In this study, the reaction between Co(III)-EDTA and hypophosphite ion, catalyzed by Pd(II), was chosen as the indicator reaction. The inhibition kinetics of this catalytic reaction were investigated in the presence of iodide ion and the possibility of its analytical application was evaluated. Catalyzers other than PdCl_2 (Pt, Au and Ni salts) were assayed for the indicator reaction and it was observed that these catalysts have no effect on the reaction. The important variables that affected the reaction rate were investigated and the optimum conditions giving maximum sensitivity were established.
